In my 20+ years of travel experience, this is my second negative comment about a hotel. This place is old, not maintained, stinky, sheets are dirty, mattress has a ton of stains on it in visible areas, pillows uncomfortable, I can go on and on. Never stay here again.

NH is a well-known hotel chain, and we've stayed with them in other cities. This was our first time in Montevideo. The location is excellent. It faces the riverfront with a great view, and being in the historic district, it's within walking distance of the main attractions of the Old City. The hotel is in good condition, with very good beds, comfortable, and very clean.

The hotel reception and dining room were very modern looking, however the room itself (we had a suite) was very dated and was not really set up for modern needs, e.g. there was only one accessible power socket in each room and it was located on the far side so phones had to be charged on the floor. The hotel itself was conveniently located close to the old town for historic sites and the wonderful port market.

My wife and I booked a suite (the most expensive room type available in that hotel) for an overnight stay to attend a conference. The hotel has not been renovated since the 1990s. There are almost no electric outlets in the room so it was difficult to charge our electronics. Upon arrival we went to the restaurant for afternoon tea, which was ok but not great. Upon return to the room I tried the jacuzzi only to find that using it flooded the bathroom! Everything in the room was shabby and basic. What is more, they provide a Nespresso coffee maker but leave only ONE capsule. When I asked in reception for a second one, they charged me! Then, next morning the breakfast included was dismal. It contained exactly the same food as the tea for two we had the previous day (recycling leftovers?). When we requested to extend our check out (which is expressly mentioned in their marketing materials) so that we could attend the event until it closed, we were sternly told that while this was allowed, I had to be down in reception by 1:00 pm sharp or they would charge me for another day!! The coffee break food in the event was exactly the same as we had had for tea and breakfast and the water servedsmelled so much of chlorine that it was undrinkable.Last, they chose to clean the bathrooms during the coffee break and there were about 200 people in attendance. All in all, a bad experience.

Beautiful view

There no better way to wake up in Montevideo and see the water of Rio de la Plata. This is the view you can enjoy at NH Colombia. And that is what makes this hotel my favorite one in Montevideo so far. There is a lot more to like about that place. The service is outstanding, the breakfast great and the gym on the top floor offers a beautiful view of the city.
The hotel shows its age a bit but this did not bother me at all.

Great location. The property itself has issues--the paint was peeling in the room. Breakfast was disappointing (for example the Orange Juice was watered down). Someone tried to come in my room at 8:30 AM. But there were great staff members--I was being kept up by a smoke detector light. Someone came and taped it so i would not be kept up.

Stay was ok, but the value was not there

The rooms seemed dated. When I booked, one of the amenities was Airport Shuttle. When I messaged to set up the pickup, I was told they don't pick up from the airport, but they would drop off. Fine. Then when I tried to book the transfer back to the airport at the front desk, I was told there was no shuttle at all. Breakfast was fine. The only real hot thing was scrambled eggs.

NO AIRPORT SHUTTLE and poor communication

They advertised an airport shuttle, but DO NOT HAVE AN AIRPORT SHUTTLE! Prior to the trip, I called twice but nobody answered the phone, called the 800 number and they couldn’t get the hotel to answer either. Finally emailed and they waited until the day of check in to tell me no shuttle existed. This hotel is FAR from the airport so expect $50-75 USD in taxis to and from the airport.

Room was old, bare and outdated. Shower leaks on the floor.

I had a bad experience at this hotel. I checked in online the night before and selected a room on the 8th floor (to avoid street noise) with a king size bed. When I arrived, they put me in a small room on the 6th floor with two small twin beds. The bed was uncomfortable. I could feel the springs. They said that is all they had even though I had checked in on line the day before. I always do this at NH hotels, that's why I like NH. The room was noisy, small and moldy. The hotel itself is old but I must have gotten the worse room in the whole place because most the reviews were great. That was not the case with my room. I didn't stay. I checked out and went to another hotel. The reception did not offer any alternatives. This is not to NH standards. I would not recommend staying here.

The room had no air conditioning, which is contrary to what was advertised on Expedia. Although the explanation at the front desk was that the air conditioner in all rooms were turned off due to being winter-time, the days I stayed were summer temperatures at over 80 degrees. And to make matters worse, there were a lack of fans being distributed. If the Expedia advertising were honest and accurate concerning the air conditioners being turned off, I would have never booked the three nights. And what does it take to turn the air conditioners on for a few days? I attribute the problem to bad management.

The room housekeeper, Cyd a really great job of keeping my room neat and clean and stocked. The desk staff was responsive and I even got a room when I arrived early in the morning. Was a little difficult at first to figure out how to get my laundry done and were room service was because no one was answering the phone. Property is getting old and could use an update. There is no air conditioning in the rooms at this time of year (September, their winter/early spring) and the rooms were quite hot. Flooring is scratched up to hell. Barely any space between the sink and the shower glass to enter the shower. It was a functional hotel but pretty average.

There as a receptionist name Mariana that try to make me made to pay a covi test 360$ at the lab it was 80$ , she try to make me May again 189$ she was very inept treatend and rude confuse me . Se cud not even print my bording pass.. She ask me to take her to miami ?? Is she weird or gay? I am married . The rest was great and very nice . Te breakfast was good but boring as the rest . The rest of the staff were great The back area of the hotel was the old city dangerous after 7 pm. This lady scream at me and told me to remember that I were at ueruguay not at America . She also put me in a dirty room. And the cleaning lady don’t let her to do it . The other receptionists were adorable . I think that she hAve some kind of combination profit for her self’s from this bill excess . One of her peers told me that she left a mess. I love te nh hotels but this lady Make me feel unsafe and uncomfortable there.

Property is in remodelation. This should be disclosed. Our room was dirty, walls covered with dust and mold. Air Conditioner was dirty and filters completed clogged with dust. Altough they putted us in another room, hotel staff did not apologize and seemed to be angry about our grievance.The hotel although centric its surroundings do not feel as a safe place to hang out at night.

I had requested a double bed, was given twin beds and told that I would be able to change rooms the following day but I did not follow this up. Only lighting in the bed area of the room was a wall lamp - not so good for reading. Went to go to restaurant for dinner on Wednesday night - it was closed so only pub food available. Breakfast the following day - no bread to make toast. At checkout, I wanted to pay cash, but they were not able to give change for bill of $11 from $50 note (rough conversion). Shower in the room was ridiculously high and whole bathroom got wet. One or two little things, but several make me wonder what’s going on. Received message from hotel after my poor rating on arrival (in Spanish which I do not read), but I had not followed this up as changing rooms during a 2 night stay is a pain.

Hotel was overall ok. Room size was adequate, lobby was nice and big, everything seemed to be in pretty good condition. We didn't have any issues with the area even though we were told it wasn't a good idea to go out in the evening on foot. Finding food outside the hotel in the evening was a bit of a challenge as most things were closed in old town. Hotel was quiet and it was an uneventful stay. I'd go back.

I really enjoyed staying in this hotel. The Ciudad Vieja is a lovely area of Montevideo, with great architecture, cafes, restaurants, museums and easy access to the ferry to Buenos Aires. It’s also situated on the rambla so was very handy for going along beside the river.

The room was lovely. I had a river view, comfortable bed and amenities. And a kettle! Much appreciated for a cup of tea. I used room service a couple of times for dinner and the food and service were great. All the staff I interacted with were lovely and friendly.

The area is a bit of a strange one as it’s deserted at the weekend which made for a strange walk on the Sunday after I arrived. During the week it was really lively, with a mixture of locals, tourists and cruise ship guests. Recommendations are LUCCA, Sin Pretenciones and Sometimes Sunday for brunch and lunch.

As in other reviews I noticed that the public areas on the floors were a bit shabby. But that didn’t really bother me. I also read about safety but it was totally fine during the day and I took a taxi at night, as I would in any city.

I had a great time in Montevideo and really want to come back.

Really disappointing kms away from 4 star...

Staff are excellent and thats the only good thing.
Room was in really bad condition, started to demolish in a few places. Bathroom are terrible. The air conditioner is really noisy not possible to sleep when is working, also its very old an not working properly.
Not close to a 4 star hotel, maybe 1-2 star.
Shame for an NH HOTEL....

The location was amazing. Our room overlooked the sea. Walking distance to the old city, the port and el Centro. The hotel definitely looked aged and requires an update but the service was great! For the price, we really couldn’t ask for me. We weren’t very fond of the breakfast but it really wasn’t any worse then the more expensive hotels we stayed in.

We spent five nights at the NH Columbia in Montevideo and it was excellent. Our 7th floor room looked out onto the Rio del la Plata - the widest river in the world. What a view!!! The front desk staff were always welcoming and especially helpful - a shout out to Nicolas, Franco and Paulina for their great service. Through them we booked a day trip to Punta del Este. The daily breakfast was plentiful and delicious (although we don't recommend eating dinner there - disappointing). The ability to cross the street and walk along the Rambla was a special treat. Ask for a room with a view.

We had a great time exploring the old city. My wife didn’t speak any Spanish so it was lovely for her to have English speaking staff. The hotel itself was a bit run down but was exactly what we needed as we were not spending a great deal of time there looking at the decor. Incredible view from the top level where the Gym is.

I can not believe that this hotel carrys an NH brand! OLD, needing repair, OLD TVs, Baths, rooms. First room had been smoked in ( non smoking hotel) Second room TV did not work and toilet water ran.
Wouldnot recommend or ever stay there again.

Great location, within easy walking distance of old town attractions. We had a family room that suited us perfectly - a king bed in one room and a separate room with two single beds that our children used. The breakfast buffet was good, though cost about $40/day for 2 adults and 2 children.

Not what I expected from NH

I have had very good prior experiences at NH hotels, this was not one of them. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the room was dated, relatively small, and the hotel in general needs a refresh.

There was no air conditioning in the rooms, made for uncomfortable night sleep on warm night. The food was mediocre, and generally the hotel was below my expectations of NH properties.

Amazed that hotel has central A/C that was turned off d at a date certain when cold conditions are supposed to set in regardless of what actually happened. It was hot! Service staff is unfriendly and unhelpful in general, they act like they are doing you an unpleasant favor. Hotel is in need of maintenance and remodeling, looks old and abandoned. neighborhood is horrible. Nice view of bay though! Food is horrible as is the selection.

Very good service from the employees specially at front desk. Clean and comfortable room, and the beds and pillows the best I have ever felt at any hotel.

The bathroom was dirty both days of our stay. The hair dryer turns off after 2 minute use. complained and they said it's the way it works because it overheats. It's a hair dryer it's supposed to blow hot air. Not at the level of NH Spain

I booked a room for three persons, and I received a two-bedrrom room, but it was disappointing because the room looks like a 2-stars room. I really do not understand how that hotel is categorized as a 4-start hotel.

horrible experience

We booked the hotel based on reviews and the photos that were uploaded. Bad idea. The staff were rude, they put us in a twin single room that was dirty and smelt like someone had urinated in it! When we complained they said that there was nothing they could do for us and we rang hotels.com. They eventually contacted the hotel for us and we're told that we would be moved to a different room the next day. The next day came and when we advised them that hotels.com had arranged a different room they said it was not possible ad they were fully booked. That same day we checked out and found the axsur hotel and stayed there for the rest of our trip.

The hotel has a beautiful view of Rio de la Plata and is vEry convenient located next to Ciudad Vieja with nice cafés and restaurants. Hotel is clean and people courteous. Not fancy rooms, very small tv, internet free in all premises

Beautiful river views & friendly staff

This hotel is located at a river front street (rambla), at walking distance (about 5 minutes) from the restored part of the old city (ciudad vieja). Most rooms have wonderful views of Rio de la Plata; be sure to ask one in the front of the building. The breakfast included is excellent. The staff is kind and helpful. Just a few setbacks: the carpet at 5th floor hallway was dirty, the bathroom is small, and some areas need renovations. But overall I liked the experience. Just a warning if you like the modern part of the city you should look for a Hotel located in the \"Pocitos\" neighborhood which is trendier and more commercial environment.

could use some cleaning

Nothing wrong with NH Columbia that a good spring, or fall, cleaning wouldn't solve. Mostly talking about floors; the hall carpets are due for replacement and the hardwood in our room needed a good scrub. Otherwise, staff were very good as was the breakfast.

Good clean, convenient to Old City

Hotel staff were efficient and friendly - even to a non-Spanish speaking American. Major downgrade is for lack of functional WiFi in room (118). It was there - but at such low signal strength it was intermittent and hence non-functional. In the lobby (1st and ground floors) WiFi worked well. Hotel is on edge of Old City which is good or bad depending on your view and activities. I encountered no problems walking back from a performance at Teatre Solis Mon eve ~2230, but my alert radar was definately up.

Very good Hotel

This was a very good hotel. They had a good breakfast which was included, the prices are very fair and they offer free wifi and parking. The room was very spacious, the exercise room is a bit sparse. The location -- although it is across from the river with beautiful views -- I felt it was a little removed from the city center -- its only a ten minute walk away BUT the surroundings are a little dicey. It didn't bother me but I can see how that may bother others. That being said -- I would recommend staying there and would probably stay there again. They also store luggage for free if your flight is in the evening! Staff speak excellent English and are very helpful.
