I've been staying at Holiday Inns around the world for over 35 years. This is one of the worst, and it's expensive to boot. It damages the Holiday Inn brand name. Amenities. And I mean minimal. Soap, shampoo, paper & pen, tissue paper, proper cups & spoons for coffee. Mid 1980s fixtures, all of which are in desperate need of refurbishment. Sketchy neighbourhood, with people smoking & loitering outside, and staff seem oblivious to it. Plenty of doped up homeless wandering around outside the hotel. Despite all this, the hotel appears to be booked out. I definitely won't be returning.

My stay at the Holiday Inn Montevideo (Colonia 823) wasn't terrible, but the whole place felt run-down and not enjoyable. Here are some ways in which it didn't match my expectations:

The first room I was in was right on a street; an alarm on the garage of the nearby Radisson went off all night long, so I asked for a different room. Not a big deal by itself.

The bidet in the second room was completely broken. It did not have a spigot for water to come out in the normal place, just a knob to turn (something?) on. When this knob was turned, the water came out of a leak in the CEILING!! I.e. instead of water around your bits, you get a damn shower, even if you're just turning it on to see if it works.

The toilet wouldn't flush solids properly. I often had to stand there and flush the damn toilet six or seven to get all the damn toilet. I have never had this experience in my life. I did not have any diarreha or other problems; the problem was the toilet.

The water in pool was the temperature of a sauna and was cloudy; it looked to me like the PH was off. I swim a lot, but could not use the pool to swim.

The exercise bike in the exercise room was visually ok, but completely broken.

The elevator I used always stopped an inch off of ground level; it was always too high or too low and would cause me to stumble entering or leaving.

The coffee at breakfast smelt and tasted terrible. I'm not sure if it was expired, or moldy, or burnt to charcoal before use or what, but it was

The no-smoking rooms smell extremely strongly of smoke. There is no escaping it. All the carpets in the public areas need replacing due to staining. The entire hotel needs a major refurb.

Esperaba más de Holiday Inn Uruguay. Lo utilizo mucho aquí en USA.
Básicamente la ubicación es muy mala, debido a la inseguridad y el constante deambular de “homeless” y también de oportunistas que quedan mirando quién entra y sale del hotel.
Si no te agrada el olor a tabaco, prepárate, porque apesta, tan pronto te acercas a la puerta de calle.
Primera y última vez en HI - Montevideo.

I contacted Expedia to shorten my stay within the cancel for free period. Expedia talked to the Holiday inn staff and said they would do it and put a note in the system to do so. Then when I checked in they said the same, even though it still said 4 nights on the reservation. The next day they said they were going to charge me the extra night because it was too late to cancel or shorten the stay.

I’ve lived in South America for six years, I stayed in the best hotels, and yes, the hotels have been better, but the customer service in this hotel was very good. It’s hard to find anybody to go out of their way for you, and hear the staff was very friendly. Jorge is one of the lobby guys and he was just all standing. Tremendous customer service. He will probably be the reason I will be back.

Cost effective, clean, comfortable stay

We stayed a couple of nights in Montevideo and wanted to be in a convenient, safe location with a good price. This Holiday Inn was definitely a great for for this. Walk out and you are in Independence Plaza, and close to the old town as well as the restaurants and shops on the Main Street. We walked here from the Buquebus terminal and it took us about 15 minutes along a picturesque pedestrian walkway.

Staff was friendly and helpful. The room is small but very clean. The hotel looks a little worn down, but don’t pay too much attention to that because the things you actually need are pretty great.

Excellent hotel for the price I paid

Very good experience. Staff very accomodating. I arived 3 hours early and even it was not time yet, the assigned us our room right away. Lend us electric adaptors, Gave a lot of advise about where to go, what to do. Room simple, but well spaced, clean bathrroom. No luxuries, but excellent for the price. My only complaint is the bed was too hard, and breakfast room was a little crowded. The city needs to address the graffity problem and a a los of wall washing. I was very satisfied.

This is not a brand that I know. It was awful. Noise all the time, I'm not sure if they were fixing something or just banging. Breakfast just have orange and tast nothing. Cake were so tough that I could not eat it. It was probably a week old or so. Did not have more scramble eggs then I asked them to fry me a egg and they charged it apart.

Great location in Montevideo

This is a decent hotel with generally friendly staff. They were kind to provide me with an adapter and very accommodating. The bed was slightly hard for my tastes, but might be okay for some. The little shampoos and things were very nice and they were generous with them. The location was perfect- close to old town, but not in it, as it apparently gets dangerous at night. There was a great restaurant two doors down called Danube Azul or something like that. Being so close to everything was wonderful. There was a weird situation where our room didn't get cleaned one day and they told us that we should have put out the \"make up room\" sign on the door. That was the only real snag we had.

A Realy Good Hotel

The location of this hotel is insanely good. If you're going to museums or churches or historical sites, this hotel is smack in the middle of everything you'd want to see.

A lot of the staff speak English fairly well, but I speak Spanish fairly well so I might be schewed in my view here.

There are at least two grocery stores very close to the hotel, which is convient for keeping your food and beverage costs down.

This was one of the best trips I've ever taken. Uruguay and its people are very nice and well-worth visiting.

The hotel is well located and rooms are very clean. In addition, the rooms are quiet and cozy. Bathrooms are well supplied. To American standards, the front desk, restaurant and most staff seem rude. They don't even answer when you say good morning or good evening (I know Spanish). Also, make sure you bring your receipts, because during the check out, they told me I owed for the whole stay, which was untrue, since I booked through Hotels.Com. In short, good hotel, with unfriendly and disorganized staff. Upper management however was friendly and resourceful.

In general, the hotel was good. Clean, close to everything, quiet rooms, nice amenities. However, we did pay for early check in, because we had a LONG flight to Montevideo. Upon arrival, the room was not available. The front desk staff was not friendly at all. However, the assistant manager was a beautiful person and solved most of our problems with a smile on her face (the only one we saw at that hotel, REALLY). In short, a nice bang for your buck, but don't expect excellent service. Bring all your receipts to avoid confusions and misunderstandings.

pool closed!

We chose this hotel exclusively for the reason that it had a pool only to find out that the ool had been closed for a whil and woud not be open until the 28th of november! we should have been informed that the pool was unavailible as we would have booked another hotel. Also we were flying onto Argentina and rdered a taxi to the airport via the hotel, the neglected to inform us that there was an Argentinian strike on so any travel in or via Argentina was cancelled. Over 50% of flights were cancelled and it would have been very useful to know this before getting to the airport with all our bags. The hotel otherwise was good and breakfast was nice.

Nice, clean room with access to all shopping areas in the city

Good location, near all major shopping areas. The room was clean, free breakfast was tasteful, the staff was just wonderful and helped with any concerns. We did not swim in the rooftop pool but the water temperature was @ 80 degrees at all times. Next time I will not forget my swim trunks! This hotel was worth the money spent!

The benefit to staying at the Holiday Inn is that being part of an international hotel chain means that travelers can expect to have standards. Overall the amenities are what you would expect from HI. The hotel itself is not bad, with complimentary breakfast and high speed internet. All in all there are hotels that are in far worse shape and with far higher rates.

Dont be put off by the location as initially at night it looks like a dump, but it was very convenient for sight seeing two minutes to independence square.
Very few staff spoke English and nobody in Uruguay spoke it either.

Great service, great location

One block from Plaza Indepedecia. One block from main shopping street, 2 blocks from pedestrian shopping mall and 5 blocks from the ocean/river La Rambla. Ample breakfast with delicious Uruguayan pastries. Need to ask for a city map. Staff is great.

Hotel está muito velho, sem manutenção. Precisando urgente um retrofit. Área da piscina está péssima. Mas o pior de tudo são os colaboradores. Mal educados, zero simpatia, zero proatividade e muita arrogância. Precisam urgente de um treinamento sobre como tratar clientes. Não volto nunca mais.

El hotel queda situado en un lugar que no es bonito, y se siente inseguro. Desde la entrada al hotel como en las habitaciones de no fumadores huele a cigarrillo.
Las camas son cómodas, el televisor no es smartv. las fotos no se parecen a la realidad

Las mejores almohadas de todos los hoteles en los que estuvimos, incluso mejor que uno de 5 estrellas. Fue un hotel de paso, llegamos en la tarde y salimos en la mañana, no habían muchas opciones de restaurantes cercanos. y de noche da un poco de miedo. Igual no puedo ser tan riguroso pq es el centro, y en el centro de cualquier ciudad que hemos visitado, no es seguro.
En la habitación se sentía un poco el olor a cigarro, pero creo que es el que entra por los pasillos.
