Central location within walking distance of downtown tourist areas, and shops. No elevators, and toilet facilities somewhat dated. Rooms clean and Staff very attentive but meal times might benefit from being extended. If you like old style charm this is ideal, perhaps having more tourist info such as taxi numbers or bus maps would help.

Great little no-frills hotel in a good location downtown. Room had a sink but shared bathroom/shower which was clean and did the trick. Easy check in with the front desk, which closes at 11pm, so check-in is no later than 11pm, which was told to me in welcome email.
Near subway, city hall, queen West, walkable to Skydome, Union station, arena, etc.
Attached bar is a cool little place that has live jazz every night!

The room was affordable, clean, and well-located. Very close to the subway station, the streetcars, and many good restaurants. It smells immaculate, but it can get very cold, and the heater took quite a while to heat the whole room. While the room and the hotel are clean, we were hesitant to use the dryer because it was full of dust. Apart from that, we are delighted with our stay and hope to come back again if we visit Toronto.

This was my first time staying at the rex. I just needed somewhere downtown to spend the night. The Rex was perfect for the price. The staff were friendly, flexible and helpful. The room was clean and there are posters and art everywhere, it's a charming spot to explore the city from woth great restaurants and entertainment nearby. I'll be booking with them again.

It’s definitely a bare-bones kind of hotel, but for the price and location it was exactly what I needed. I was fairly pleasantly surprised! The room is a bit old and had a slight smell (left the window open for a bit and it mostly went away) but it was very clean otherwise, comfortable, and I felt safe the entire time. The shared bathrooms were surprisingly nice, super clean (no matter what time you went so they clearly clean it often) and recently renovated. I didn’t spend much time in the room anyway, so it worked perfectly for my stay. The WiFi was a bit slow but did the job. Plus, the staff were super friendly and kind. Overall, no bells and whistles, but I would definitely stay again!!

I enjoyed my stay here overall . I had a private room with its own bathroom the main room was small but efficient . The bathroom has been recently renovated and is modern however, the toilet kept flushing all night as the flange needed to be replaced. The walls in the room could use a good paint job . The staff were friendly and accommodating in the hotel and in the restaurant. I would suggest if you have a lot of luggage to book on the first or second floor as there is no elevator if you have a lot of luggage. For the price point overall I found The Rex a great place to stay for location and convenience .I would definitely stay here again.

The room was an interesting split between the gleaming new stainless-steel and dark matte-tile bathroom, and the seedy, saggy, marked and worn room the bed lay in.
Hard-matressed with a harsh polyester cover. surrounded by sparse second-hand bits of furniture, \"lovely\" was not a word that came mind.

I had a pre-paid reservation for a room through Expedia. When I arrived at the hotel at 1:00 AM, there was no room available for me. The desk clerk simply stated that the hotel would process a refund. Consequently, I was forced to find alternative accommodation late at night.

We couldn’t sleep at all.a part of the in house bar music, the noise of the train cars and police cars sirens all that noice was going to the room through the air conditioning gaps or opening. My bad choice was based on the short distance to our meeting. But really never again.

The property is dated but this adds to its charm. Floors in the rooms are hard flooring and not carpet which is lovely. Rooms are simple and are as shown. Location is excellent. FYI: Property is not accessible (stairs) and rooms are small. Temperature control is challenging (AC didn’t work and windows don’t open).
Staff are lovely and very accommodating. If you are looking for basic accommodation in a great part of town with ease of access to subway with many places walkable distance then consider this property.

We had a mixed experience at The Rex Hotel. On the positive side, the staff were absolutely lovely — friendly, helpful, and welcoming throughout our stay. The hotel also has a unique charm and a quirky character that sets it apart from more generic options in the city.

That said, the rooms are definitely in need of a revamp. While the character is there, the decor and facilities feel quite dated and stale. One major downside was that the windows can’t be opened, which made the rooms feel stuffy. The air conditioning unit didn’t help much either — more of a noisy fan than actual cooling.

Unfortunately, our stay ended on a frustrating note. The water was shut off to the entire building without any notice, and we were told multiple times that it would be back in 5–10 minutes. After waiting over 40 minutes, we had no choice but to leave and find somewhere else just to use basic bathroom and shower facilities — not ideal when you're traveling.

With some upgrades to the rooms and better communication around building issues, The Rex could be a great spot. But as it stands, it’s a bit of a hit-or-miss experience.

The room had everything I needed and the receptionist was very accommodating as I had to check in a bit early. The free toast and coffee breakfast was also good and it was a plus for me to be able to hear some jazz music from the bar. I would recommend this hotel to my friends!

The room was terrible. The air conditioning unit was right next to your face when in bed and it was noisy. We only stayed one night, but if we had to stay another night I would have checked out. We were told there was no lift and had to carry our bags up and down two floors it needs to be highlighted there are no lifts. We were in our mid 60’s.

Hotel was great. Wasn't able to check out the jazz bar but could hear the music and loved it. Rooms were clean and shared bathrooms were also spotless. Check in was an easy process and accessing the hotel and room with the key card was also simple. My only complaint was that the wifi, while it did connect, rarely provided internet. But my stay was so short that I didn’t inquire about fixing it so no point deduction.

Staff are incredibly positive and helpful. The room, for nearly $300/night, all-in, was tiny- double bed pushed against the wall - ancient window AC. Unpainted patched hole in wall. Restaurant and entertainment was fabulous. But the hostel-like rooms are definitely not worth the price.

My room was clean and even the shared bathroom was nice. My only gripes are not having a view out the window, that the “mild” chicken wings were more like mid BBQ flavour, the electronic band that was performing, and no chocolate milk and French toast during breakfast. I still had a good stay though. It’s an 8-minute walk from the Princess of Wales Theatre.

This is not your normal modern chain hotel but this is not a bad thing. It has character especially with the Jazz and Blues Bar. Although not in the middle of Downtown it is still in a good location with a 15 minute walk to the CN Tower/Rogers Centre or the subway is very close @ Osgoode. There are a number of good pubs and restaurants close by if you want to venture out.

This is my second year coming to Toronto for a concert, and The Rex was a very convenient and affordable hotel in the middle of everything. Only a 10-15 minute walk from Union. I took a single bed room with private shower. Everything was clean as one would expect. Would recommend for a single person coming for a short stay

We walked to most things, though the hotel is also very handy for the streetcar which stops right outside and also a few mins to the subway. We could hear the jazz as we were above the club, which was fine for us but may bother early or light sleepers.
