We stayed at Hotel Sumengen in 1993 and on return to Istanbul in 2026 wanted to go back. We were not disappointed. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. The hotel is charming and spotlessly clean. The breakfast has an extensive selection of authentic Turkish foods and the breakfast room has a sea view. The location is still as characterful as we remember it, although there are now more restaurants and small supermarkets. We will stay at Sumengen again next time we visit. Thanks Joe, Can, and the rest of the team!

We loved our time at Sumengen! The staff was wonderful, especially John and Fakir. Very helpful and friendly. Breakfasts were lovely, with lots of choices. And the location was perfect for us. The room was spacious and very comfortable. I highly recommend this small, well-run hotel.

Had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel very welcome. The rooms were clean, spacious, and well-equipped with all the necessary amenities. We were very pleased with this hotel. It is not new, but very cozy, on the contrary, it is even better. The staff is amazing, they helped us with all our questions, special thanks to the staff for the breakfasts, we really enjoyed them every morning.location - the very heart of Istanbul, just perfect. There is a very nice market nearby, we bought a lot of clothes and Turkish delight there. Highly recommended.

Price was too high compare to room size and facilities. What I booked I did not get the same type room! Some employees was rude and has no manner no warm greeting nothing ! We had a spa room on the top (6th floor). It had a stunning view of the Marmara Sea and the East city. The lobby is pleasant and comfortable and there are excellent dining options nearby, including Rainbow Fish & Meat, right across the street. A super-convenient walkable option for Old City sights. I would rate this an easy 5 stars except for the breakfast. The breakfast is ok, but could be improved for Western diners. Lot of cold cheese, salads, but sesame bagels disappeared quickly and scrambled eggs weren’t always available without a long wait. This is not a place to have a rental car, but you don’t need one.

Staff members were helpful and kind. Very highly recommended.

Great location for access to the sights. The views from room and dining room were good, could watch the boats and dolphins. Free breakfast was terrific, excellent selection of Turkish breakfast foods. Room was comfortable and clean, but could be noisy in morning as we were directly below the dining room, but it was time to get up anyway.
Only downsides was some difficulty with the level of English with all the staff so we were unsure of communication at times, the pushing of pamphlets at the desk of high end tours and restaurants.
I would also have liked seating, maybe cushions and rugs, on the rooftop level as the views are fantastic but no place to sit.

A good home base

Ok let’s start with the good. The location was excellent. Right in the middle of everything. The view from our room was gorgeous. The staff was friendly. The not so good-super thin walls. We could hear neighbors pretty much doing anything all night. Enough to keep you up. The facilities are a bit run down so don’t expect plush accommodations.

This is the 5th time that I am staying at this hotel. I am in love with the view and location. Staff super friendly, the daytime front desk Enes and night time front desk. They even arranged our Covide test, everything was done exactly on time. Everyone seemed eager to help and treat you well, specially Sehmus was so kind to help anytime we needed. The location is excellent--within walking distance to many major sites, to the sea, and restaurants.

The lighting in the room is very poor. I would encourage the management to correct this.

We had pre-arranged for airport transportation and were told a driver would be waiting for us with our name on a card. This did not happen, which was very disappointing after a very long trip. A man kept promising us a driver was coming, but we still waited over an hour for our ride. However, the hotel did give us a very nice room upgrade with a beautiful view of the sea after we finally arrived, which we appreciated.

Stayed 2 nights in total for a short trip. Really helpful staff and also very friendly. Nice location and easy to get places from. Clean room, comfy beds.

Negatives :
- Close rooms, can hear everything from the other rooms (bring earmuffs)
- Marble entrance floor. When it gets wet, it gets wet. From cleaning or from rain. Nearly broke my neck. Was no Signs up.

Great stay.

We stayed at the sumengen for 4 nights. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Great people to talk to . The location couldn’t get any better. It’s in the cultural side of Sultanahmet a lot more locals but you feel like you’re experiencing true Istanbul culture. It’s 6/7 Mins away from the more international hotels but I would recommend staying here .

The hotel looks good on pictures but in reality rooms look worse. Location is good if you want to be in the center of old city.
- breakfast was very limited to compare to other similarly priced hotels
- inside rooms smells very old
- lobby is very small
- you can hear people in nearby rooms breathing, almost zero privacy, every flush, every water run, every door that opens - you can hear it
- practically no internet - you have to stand in hallway near the modem in order to check email, streaming does not work, if you go inside the room then it does not reach either, staff was rude and kept saying that internet works but it only worked near the modem itself and barely
- expedia didn't help when we called reg internet issues, said if hotel doesn't want to refund so we can move to different hotel then its up to them, what's a point of being a member if they can't help own gold customer

AVOID AVOID AVOID

The A/C unit was malfunctioning for the two nights we stayed at this hotel. The first night we called, the front desk guy came up to the room for a minute and tried to use the remote unsuccessfully. He said a technician would look at it the next day. The next night, the A/C was stuck at 18 degrees Celsius and COULD NO LONGER BE TURNED OFF. It was pointed straight at the bed. Called the front desk, he said that they can control the temperature from the front desk. We requested he turn it up to 24 degrees, he only turned it up to 22 but we were too tired to keep fighting. We wake up in the middle of the night to find that the A/C is back at 18 degrees and could not be turned off. Here is the summary:

1) Hotel staff are either liars or incompetent. They either do not know how to operate the A/C (selective memory certain nights about controls from the front desk), or he lied the first night about controls being available from the front desk.

2) Hotel staff made no real attempts to fix the problem or give us a new room.

3) I STRONGLY SUSPECT the hotel staff had some kind of grudge and were manipulating the A/C from the front desk to ruin our stay.

AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS

The photos of the Hotel which are available on line, must have been taken when it was new, and are very deceiving when you are choosing a hotel for your stay.

Very difficult to locate for first time guests making their own way from the Airport.

King like experience

It was a fabulous stay with a good turkish style breakfast and kind and helping staff, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a marvelous stay in a good neighborhood 5 minutes from SultanAhmet, the only inconveniences were the restricted alcoholic drink choices and the small size TV set which are totally negligible. Go for room 602 with a great size and good view of the Bosphorus and a great jet bathtub in it.

Great location; 2 blocks from Haiga Sophia and Blue Mosque. 10 min walk to Sultan's Palace. 10-15 min walk to main shopping street with McDonalds and Starbucks. 1 block away are many nice restaurants. Right next door to an excellent Indian restaurant. I liked being so close to the main sights, but just far enough away that the morning call to prayer didn't wake us up.
The first night, they didn't have the room I booked: I booked a triple, but they gave us a double with 3 single beds in it. I got this corrected the next morning and we had the exact room pictured on the website. Room was cleaned well each day by nice staff. Breakfast had a nice selection each morning, with changes in the fruits and some items, with other items consistent. Lots of options for my picky eaters, so everyone found something they liked. No issues with theft, but I did use the safe and locked my bags.
My son tripped on the steps coming in the hotel one night; the staff rushed out, picked him up and carried him in. They then got him a bag of ice right away. They also carried him to the room and later got us another bag of ice. I so appreciated all of their help; so kind. I stayed here with 2 kids. We had a King bed and a pull out couch in a large room with 2 desks and 2 lounge chairs. Good amount of space for us.
They will call for a taxi to the Ataturk Airport for you. Should run 50-55 Turkish Lira. My taxi to the hotel from the airport cost 60 Turkish Lira.

I was at this hotel with my family for 14 days. Thanks to the hotel It was one of the best vacation I had. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Breakfast Was mazing! Tons of variety, including omelette, eggs, yogurts, choice of cold cereal, fresh fruit, and cheese. American Traveler please note that this place isn't a Hilton or Sheraton Hotel it's more like a suit apartment with 5 stars service. Perfect location for all touristy thinks. WiFi was fast. I'll be back for sure and will recommend to my friends and family.

nice little hotel. We were a bit uncomfortable because the weather was warm and there is no airconditioning. Staff were very helpful great location, just a short walk from many eating houses, shops the blue mosque, and a little market. You can get to the airport for fifty tl if you barter with a taxi driver. Breakfast is an impressive looking spread, but we lost a bit of interest when we found that all the hot food was stone cold...scrambled eggs, frankfurts, chicken nuggets. And the milk for your cereal is room temperature. Nevertheless, not a bad hotel

Paid for a family room, received a double room

I had paid for a family room but when I got there they said the hotel was fully booked and there was no family room available. They gave me a double room in the basement instead. I ended up paying for a nice family room, but receiving a basement double room with two sofa bed. I didn't enjoy the dishonesty and would never go back to that hotel.

We arrived there at 7am, and they STILL checked us in. The food was pretty decent, the view was awesome, and the room was great. I can only compare this for American travelers: this place isn't a Hilton, and it's not a holiday inn. It's more like a bed and breakfast, but a bed and breakfast with super friendly service, quaint decor, and a more than excellent location. Within three - five minutes of the blue mosque, and everything else... it's the perfect location if you want to do all the touristy things. For the business traveler: the internet is fast!

Charming hotel in central location

We were welcomed to the hotel by a friendly bellhop and helpful concierge, who invited us relax and enjoy the complimentary afternoon tea service. Our room was spacious and well-appointed, and even had a view of the Bosphorous. The location could not have been better, a short walk to all the major sites. The elegant dining room overlooked the water, and breakfast was very generous and varied. All the hotel staff was professional and courteous.

The Hotel room was very big with a clean bathroom.The Service was a very friendly, helpful and generous.We liked the breakfast room with the view to the Bosporus and the furnishing. The breakfast was good but my husband would have liked 'English Breakfast' with either scrambled eggs. Only one of the 3 days we were given scrambled eggs. The other days we were told that we had to pay extra for it. The breakfast tables were not properly cleaned up after people had left.

With a small budget its offer quite a comfortable stay.It was a first time i've stayed at this kind of hotel but few incidents lead to a disappointing view of i rate this hotel eg. there's a very strong of cigarettes smell on room level eventhough it was an non smoker level.I've tried informing the front desk but to no avail till my wife got a nasty sore throat n runny nose due to the smoke smell.I was also informed that there will be a garden view but it was actually a residents road next to it.Theres other small little problems that i would not want to comment but i hope the hotel management should look into those areas that will make the guests stay more memorable.Thanks

Sumengen 4 star service, 2 star facility

My room was in the basement however the windows opened up to a vehicle and pedestrian traffic street. Although there were bars on the windows I did not feel very secure knowing someone could walk right up to my room window.

The room was stale, the curtains were dirty/dusty and the turkish carpet was stained. There were few working lights and a lot of dust and some cob webs on fixtures and in corners of the room...apparently not a widely used room.

I appreciated the complimentary breakfast, the free wi-fi and the staff was friendly and accommodating I just was not impressed with the room.

It was close to shopping, Aya Sofia etc, the dining opportunities are vast in that area.

Not a 4 Start Hotel at All.

This Hotel is not a 4 start hotel. It is an old house that had been turned to a hotel. The lobby is at the 4th floor level. Most of the rooms are are under the ground. When I was there, the TV would not work. The heat would not work. The hair dryer would not work. The location of the hotel is fine, the food is OK.

A Real American review... Crappy Hotel

Very dissapointed with this Hotel, we stayed here at the end of our stay in Turkey. We stayed at the Legend Hotel at the beginning, then went to Ephesus and returned to Istanbul. Could not believe that this is what Expedia considered a 3 1/2 star hotel. I did one of their recommendations and although have had great luck with these in the past. This one was a dud. The staff were not friendly, especially the night clerk and our AC leaked. Although we were 4 when we checked in (2 adults, 2 kids), the kids bed was a pull out couch and you could fee the springs. No one wanted to sleep there, so Dad had to, which mean no sleep at all. There is nothing special about this hotel, although they may say centrally located. Any Hotel in the old city is centrally located.

Not worth it hotel .

The Hotel was OK, but there are much better options for the value of the money . The wall papers was peeled off and mold signs on the wall. The room was not clean at all and beds are not very comfortable.
Reception staff were very friendly and helpful .
Breakfast was OK

I suggest to pay few $ more and go to better hotel in the same area.

To me , I wont go to this hotel again.

The good, the bad and the ugly

We had a building site as a view and after asking for a different room were moved one floor up to have a better view of the building site yipeeee!! food was nothing to write home about. Staff was helpful and nice. We were awakened by hammers and other building tools in the morning, at least we didn't have to set our alarms as the builders were on time every morning.
There was also building work carried out in front of the hotel.

The beds were not comfortable and the duvets were too small and terrible pillows. The room had n very handy safe but just too small for a laptop. Otherwise is was ok for the price. I would not have paid a penny more.

Beware of taxi drivers con, you give them say a 50 and they swap it for 5 and demand you made a mistake. And stay clear of the shoe shiners, also a con. Otherwise the people in Istanbul and the rest of Turkey are very friendly and generous.
We can recomend ski in Bursa at Uludag, fantastic. Book through Volhare travel agent in Istanbul opposite the Mccdonalds.

Sumengen- excellent location and service with a smile! :)

Excellent location, lovely rooms though a little small, fantastic neighbourhood, very nice people...in fact the only thing this hotel lacked was a proper restaurant and room service. My sisters and I had a phenomenal time and we are already planning our next trip to turkey and we will definitely stay at the same hotel as we loved the whole area!!! very clean and the most incredible breakfast spread every morning!! oh and awesome coffee :)

Fabulous Hotel!!!

The Hotel is small, very clean, very cute, the staff is excellent, two blocks from Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque, pretty little restaurants and stores on the streets nearby, it really is very recomendable!!

Convenient place with minor obstacles

The hotel is clean and good located. The breakfast was very good in my taste with nice view from the restaurant. The personnel are friendly and helpful. The internet wireless signal is week and slow. The soundproof quality of the room is not good at all.

Great Location

The Sumengen is located in the heart of the tourist section of Istanbul. The Blue Mosque, the Aya Sofia and the main attractions of the old section of Istanbul are all within walking distance. The breakfast room has great views of the Bosphorus. Friendly and helpful staff.

Very good location, pleasent and clean hotel rooms, lots of space in the room. Towels changed every day, you get sleapers to. You are two min from antique bazar, and all atractions in Sultanahmed. Very happy holiday

The rooms were much smaller than what they appeared in the picture and there was some construction that was going on close by. Other than those things...the staff and the location was wonderful!
