The hotel was pleasant enough (was only there for one night, room only). Entrance was nice, but the building is looking a little tired. The room was fairly basic, did the job, just nothing fancy. The hotel were clearly having some staffing issues due to Covid, so minimal housekeeping had been done. There were only 2 pillows for the bed, and a lack of towels in the room. Had I been staying longer, I would probably have had a word with staff to rectify problems, but all I needed was a bed for the night, so it worked for me

Could be lovely but fell short.

Beautiful building but in desperate need of some TLC and modernisation. Dining room looked a bit grubby and was expensive at more than £43 for 2 pints and 2 plates of fish and chips, albeit the fish and chips was delicious. Nice big bed but pillows very uncomfortable and bathroon had seen better days.

The actual cleanliness was good. The bathroom and sheets were spotless. The room itself though was tired and dated, marks on walls, stains on the carpet, peeling wallpaper and the lamp didn't work. The bed was massive and comfortable and we would have had a great night's sleep had it not been very hot in the room and the window would only open the smallest crack which left the room stuffy and airless.

Staff worked miracles

This is a lovely hotel with a great history going back to when it was first occupied by the Worthington brewery family. This is one of Mercure's stately home type of property on the outskirts of Burton-upon-Trent. It has stately rooms, both bedrooms and reception areas. Comfortable lounge with bar and dining area. We visited when the announcement of restrictions on corona virus were announced but the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Free room service. Restaurant had to close but bar snacks were available. Good hearty English breakfast included.

My son and I stayed for 1 night in August 2019. Front of house staff especially the lovely lady who met us on arrival and helped us when leaving were exceptionally helpful and kind. She went out of her way to help us with a series of thing. Thank you!

Decent sized room and nice big bed, a little dated on the interior, also no air con and it was extremely warm in the room, even with the window left open, but I guess it’s an old building so doubt air con would be cheap to put in. For the price the room was well worth it! Relatively well cleaned, only slight gripe was we found a couple hairs in the bathroom by the sink but all in all much better than most places we usually stay and I wouldn’t expect it to be 100 percent perfect. Staff were friendly the few time’s we spoke with them and it was quick and easy to check in and out. The room service menu was a little limited and as expected in a hotel a little pricey, the one night we planned to eat in our room after a long day we decided to eat the crisps and cereal bars we bought for the trip up as 16 quid per burger was a little to pricey and as id been at a wedding near by in the day and had a few drinks I couldn’t drive anywhere for food, i’d say I think they should look at some sort of light bites at a bit of a lower price point, not sandwiches etc, maybe some sort of salad or noodle option maybe? Will definitely consider staying here again the next time we are up in the area.

Lovely, historic hotel with amazing service

Picturesque hotel with very comfortable beds. The manager at this hotel is amazing! We stayed during the heat wave in Britain - in fact, the day that the highest temperature since 2003 was recorded. The hotel is not air conditioned, so we were moved to a lower ground level room. The manager brought us a pitcher of cold water and a fan. When it is hot - ask for a ground floor room. We were cool, comfortable and well cared for.

Poor not going again.

The hotel was TIRED, needs a revamp quickly to keep 4 stars, plumbing is old, unreliable, noisy.
The décor is old, the dining room is old, its carpet almost threadbare.
A huge disappointment, having stayed in a number of 4 stars, this was not up to scratch.
HOWEVER this is NOT a moan about staff they were friendly and great, doing agood job in difficult conditions.

From the moment we entered the drive it was obvious the hotel was run down. The reception was worn and old. The room was dark and dingy. The view was of unkempt shrubs surrounded by rubbish empty coke cans and even a fork. The bathroom was from the 1980's. The central heating pipes clicked and banged during the night. We went to the bar, chairs were stained, the floor covered crumbs and remains of food. After 10 minutes we had to ask at reception to get any service. A further 5 minutes before the receptionist came to take our order. Coffee arrived and she then had to go to the kitchen for milk. The comment on checkout was 'we are refurbishing'.

A Hotel in a lovely setting with very helpful Staff and a very comfortable bed but sadly looking and feeling a little tired. Only one chair in a room for two people meant that if one needed to sit at the desk, the bed was the only other seating option - not Mercure’s usual standard. Breakfast was great but very much a DIY meal even for the drinks.

Lovely clean and comfy room. A few minor things could do with refurbishing like trims in bathroom and dimmer switch which was loose. Otherwise furniture is sturdy and a comfy ish bed. It is an old building so a little creaky on the stairs but not a real issue. Didn't sample food due to really early check out. Small B road out the front made for a but of disturbed sleep as not double glazed so have requested a back room for my next stay. Very pleasant staff. I did enjoy the bath as I don't have one at home!

This hotel is a large converted Italianate mansion set back into large grounds. It fit the purpose of what I was looking for - a quiet, comfortable night's sleep on the way to an appointment nearby the next day. It could clearly benefit from a large sum of money being spent on it, but whilst dated it kind of suited the character of the place and can no way be described as dilapidated. I had a good evening meal, reasonably priced and the usual hotel buffet-style breakfast. The room was a satisfactory size (I was travelling alone) and, more importantly, clean.

I remember when this hotel looked a little tired........about 20 years ago. It needs demolishing or refurbishing and it needs it urgently. The staff were lovely but the hotel is barely fit for purpose. It´s brand damaging for Mercure

Great hotel for the money! After reading some of the reviews I was a little sceptical! However the hotel was superb. Comfortable large room very clean, nice bathroom & great view of open country side. Very friendly staff all helpful & polite. We were very impressed with our stay & would recommend.

Nice place to stay but expensive food.

No lunch on offer on a Saturday afternoon which was odd. Outrageously expensive breakfast. It was over £10, for some beans. Sausage and egg. Hardly earth shattering ingredients. People started packing away the breakfast whilst we were still eating. Nice hotel and location. No shops nearby and I paid £4 for a bottle of water. Come on, this is crazy.

Wedding party taking over the hotel

We asked three full refund due to a large wedding party taking over the whole hotel and we've experienced this in the past when all we wanted to do was to stay in a quiet country hotel. Website indicated this was a quite comfortable hotel and we did not expect to be staying as wedding guests of somebody else's wedding and therefore decided to travel free arms home to Ipswich. When we asked Expedia for a full refund due to the circumstances we were told that we were not entitled even though we believed the service provided by Expedia and the hotel was below our expectation.

We would not recommend either Expedia or this hotel to anybody who to lack customer service and understanding very wanting a quiet hotel as advertised

Kept awake by noisy music

No mention of an event going on upon check in at 6pm or on the website. Settled down into bed for the evening after a very long day working and music starts thumping under my room, walls vibrating. It continued until midnight! I was not impressed. Reception staff response- oh sorry. Yeah we should say on the website when an event is going on!!! Plus due to the very warm weather, the room was uncomfortably hot as no aircon or fans. Won't be staying here again.

Disappointed, could be a great hotel

I was dissapointed with my stay, i have stayed in many Mercure Brands and this is not to the same standard. The bar food is of poor quality and i would not eat there again. The room is nice and clean. The wifi is a pain to sign up to, whats wrong with having a simple sign up form.

If you need to pay for Breakfast don't bother, its poor quality and not a great variety. No yogurts, just simple white bread, I personally hate when hotels have big pots of jam that everybody puts there spoon into.

Not a good hotel

The food at dinner and breakfast was not good. On arrival we were not informed that, due to a large coach party, there would be no room in the restaurant the next night, this just happened to come up in conversation. We had not planned to go out to dinner but we're forced to even though the restaurant we managed to book at the last minute was a drive away, so only one of us was able to have a glass of wine, and it was pouring with rain However this did us a favour as the food at the Boot in Repton was so superior to the hotel. Also due to the coach party breakfast service on Saturday was a disaster, with items not available and a long wait for those we asked for. The member of staff serving in the bar on Friday night was surly to the point of rudeness.
The room was very hot and there was no air conditioning as stated in your hotel description and the controls on the shower were difficult to operate as they were stiff due to age, and the non slip service in the bottom of the bath was inadequate.
I would not return to this hotel and would be reluctant to book another Mercure hotel in the future.

I'm not sure why this hotel has such a high rating on your website, or why you continue to book rooms there, this would make me reluctant to use your website in the future

Tired hotel, no heating, rude staff

Had high hopes for this place but I was let down. As a regular traveller I see many hotels, but none in as poor a state of repair as this.

The heating didn't work, I was given a rattly fan heater to use which kicked out a cloud of dust when I turned it on. The sheets were dusty, my room was not clean and didn't get cleaned. The hotel is dark, dingy and dirty. Many light bulbs are broken and it feels tired and unloved

The food was inedible and although I paid for breakfast, I didn't risk it when I found they didn't know what lactose intolerance meant and tried to give me a cheese starter I didn't order. They also put butter on my steak which was inedible due to being so
Tough.

I sent a complaint email but got a brusque reply. Don't waste your money on this dire hotel. A suggestion to Mercure, spend some money on replacing your staff and renovate the hotel top to bottom.

Nice Hotel - Old Room

Room was shocking, bathroom looked like something out of a horror movie. I left the hotel and stayed with a friend after this, didn't even wait for reception staff as was late at night. I hear other rooms are lovely but this was room was in dire need of a refurb.

This hotel is awful. We had to move room as the first one didn't have a shower! Apparently they had to be removed from certain floors because of poor water pressure.

The rooms are really outdated and in need of a refurb. We had a radiator in the room which had water running through it constantly - it sounded like a waterfall. The radiator in the bathroom was held together by tape.

The only positive was that the bed was comfortable.

We only stayed here because we were guests at a wedding in the village and would never stay here through choice.
