Really enjoyed our stay here. Super friendly staff, lovely room and general cleanliness was brilliant. The only thing I would suggest is perhaps the beds were a little uncomfortable - not the mattress, but when you would turn on them it would feel like the whole thing was going to topple. Apart from that, the view from our window, use of the shower and toilet and it's closeness to the city centre made this trip stress-free and very enjoyable.

Deceptive owners at Kooyk Hotel

The owners of the hotel were so deceptive. If you look on their add you will still see that they offer breakfast. When we arrived and asked about breakfast the excuse was that we arrived late and they needed our reservation for breakfast made earlier. We heard they say the same thing to other guests upon arrival. After speaking with employees of this hotel they confirmed they do NOT provide breakfast, not even for purchase and haven’t done so for a very long time.
Also we let them know there is no running water in the sink of one of the bathrooms, no light above the mirror in our room, the hair blower did not work and the pillows are small and lumpy. They said they would fix the items but never did during our 3 night stay. Also, we asked for some heat as it was very damp (temperature outside was down to 14C at night and 16C during the day). Their response was they couldn’t do it until the fall. Others were wearing coats and staff sweaters.
The great thing about this hotel is the location.
I do not recommend this place because of their deception overall. They don’t care about their guests but sure do like taking our money.

I would never return.

I would not return to this hotel ever. The people there were very rude. Most of the electric outlets in the room didn't work. The bed is very old and uncomfortable. There is a window but no ventilation. The bathroom was dirty.

Honest review.
Pros - The owners were lovely dont know why there are lots of comments about the being rude. The location is amazing with fantastic links to all locations via trams and its nice and quite especially for being in the city. We didnt eat breakfast but the facilities for dinning was clean and well laid out. The bed was large enough and comfortable, i always take my own pillow when i travel. We also had doors which open onto the balcony.

Cons - the hotel does feel quite outdated and a bit more like a hostel. We paid extra for a private bathroom, these arent attached to the room but it wasnt that much of an issue to be honest.

Overall we had a really comfortable stay it just felt like it needed updating a little

The staff at this hotel are super helpful and friendly. I suggest only booking a room with a bathroom in it. The bathroom we had to use was so tiny it was hard to use. Overall it was ok, they could do a few minor upgrades like, more than two hooks in the room to hang your cloths, a fan when it's hot and a hook or two in the separate showers to hang your clothes while showering. If you have trouble with stairs be warned, the steps are very narrow.

Location is great for shopping, eating and being a tourist. Clean and very safe. Warning to Americans who are new to the Netherlands, the stairs are very steep so I am grateful we were 1 floor up.
Also, shared toilets and shower rooms may be a shock and they are pretty small at this hotel.

Good location for museums & park

As a budget hotel in a very popular tourist area Kooyk Hotel was ok. Comfortable, clean bed, with bathroom for own use, and a friendly welcome on arrival. Remember to take flip flops or similar as our bathroom was a few metres down a corridor. Room was very small, stairs very steep and narrow (both the width of the staircase & the depth of stair tread) so tricky for anyone with limited mobility. Decor just seemed tired and only just about ok. Did not try the breakfast but breakfast room looked nice. Tram at Leidesplein about 5 mins walk (links including central station). Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museum a pleasant stroll away (through the park, if you like). Nice bars & restaurants nearby.

Everywhere was clean, no problems there. It was a minimalist room with everything you needed for a comfortable stay. There was an area as part of the hotel to get food and drink at the appropriate times which was simple. Unfortunately due for time we were unable to partake on the breakfast (which was available for a reasonable price added, especially being in Amsterdam which can be quite pricey) but it sounded lovely. Homemade pancakes were an option that nearly tempted me to miss a flight.
The hosts were attentive, friendly and very knowledgeable of the area. As well as just being generally a delight to chat to.
For a private room/bathroom, options of breakfast, wonderfully friendly owners, basically in the centre of Amsterdam.. it couldn't have been any better. Would definitely come again.

The hosts were friendly. We expected a double bed, but received two twin beds pushed together. The exterior bathroom was down the hallway (not close). The small room did not face either the canal or a garden, but an air shaft. The location is good, with easy tram access.

Ove good stay for what we needed

Travelling on a budget and stayed here as it was one of the cheapest hotels we could find in amsterdam that suited out needs.
It's in the perfect location (everything is a short walk away), owner was really friendly and welcoming and made our stay enjoyable.
Room was comfy and provided everything you need.
Shared showers and toilets were always very clean and look new! Was really no problem sharing as was like they were our own anyway.
All in all wouldn't fault and would recommend to other budget travellers

My experience at the Kooyk hotel was fitting with the cost. The room was comfortable and clean enough. The shared washroom down the hall was convenient. The very tiny toilet booth was uncomfortable. Be prepared for steep stairs and small steps. The hotel was well located near tram lines and many restaurants.

My wife and I stayed at the Kooyk Hotel when in Amsterdam to attend a gig at the Paradiso. The location was taken into account when choosing the hotel. We got the airport shuttle bus from Schiphol which drops off at the Leidesplein stop a five minute walk from hotel. The Paradiso was a ten minute walk and all the bars and restaurants of Leidesplein just around the corner. The hotel itself was very clean and warm, and the staff friendly and helpful. I felt the 3pm check in was a bit late as we had a morning arrival, but we were able to drop or bags off at 11am. In all had a great stay and wouldn't hesitate to use again when staying in that area. Convenient and Clean.

Likes: good location close to museums and walking distance to transportation, shops. Room looks like pictures displayed. Spacious. Quiet with canal view. Shared toilets and shower rooms which were clean.

Dislikes: they do not have air conditioning. In fact when we asked about it. The staff member said this is a one-star hotel. We then asked for a fan as it was a 35C day. They said they don’t have any more but they were using it for themselves. They don’t have a 24hr desk so they could have offered it overnight and return it the next day but refused to.

7am Construction equipment wake up call

Terrible. TV didn't work, no TV remote, bathrooms were disgusting (urine on the toilet and walls). We were woken at 7am by a construction crew doing work on the exterior of the building. They were literally drilling into our wall with loud power tools (hearing damage noise levels) at 7 in the morning. When i complained to the hotel management in a polite way, i was given a very rude response. Which upset me even more.

Excellent location, Nothing fancy, super small double room, you must pay to watch TV, if you have obesity problems and can not climb stairs never stay there! the stairs have a very large inclination that are very difficult to climb and high and the spaces very small. No private bathroom must share toilet and shower on guests of 5 more rooms. I would definitely not stay there again I recommend it.

Wonderful place if you can drop your standards

Place was okay.
We stayed during the hottest day of the year, and not having any Air Conditioning was slightly unpleasant. Also a bathroom and shower putside the room werent ideal. But given the price, it was all managable. Good nights sleep, they hold the luggage, and did check-ins at every hour of the night.

Overall the room was nice, and faced a quieter part of the city. The single glazed window could be improved to double or tripple glazing to keep the noise of cyclists, pedestrians and cars out.

Close to the most important attractions.
The entire \"hotel\" floor was heavily carpeted and dirty, dangerous for those who suffer from allergies. Our room was also carpeted which was filthy along with the walls. There is no air conditioning and the blinds were broken. The window was direct to the street and without any protection. They were aware we were traveling with an infant. Window without a handrail is very DANGEROUS! I spoke to the receptionist regarding these issues who apologized and provided a poor excuse telling me that they were renovating (no area in remodeling was observed). If that were the case, why would you place clients in currently renovating spaces? It appears that this location has little regard for moral ethics. This place is not worth saving some chump changer over. FOR YOUR SAFE, PLEASE STAY AWAY.

It's a cheap place to stay near all the attractions. The room was comfy but we had to share the bathroom with others. It is also very noisy depending on the guests. Reception is not available unti 11 AM. Our flight arrived before then and they wouldn't leave our bags. I wouldn't recommend it more than a few days.

The location was one of the only good things about this hotel. We were supposed to get a bigger room but got a room the size of our bed. The stairs were nearly impossible to walk up with luggage. The shared toilet rooms were ridiculously small. I usually stay in budget hotels, this one wasn’t the greatest.
If you plan on staying a few nights and only use it to sleep, it’s fine.

Typical steep Amsterdam stairs and tight halls, but room was comfortable size and could be comfortable for two people. Paid an off season, weekday price so it was definitely worth the money.

The owner is a fantastic lady committed to keeping this budget hotel affordable and comfortable for travelers. The room was nice, the beds were very comfortable, and it was fantastic to have the option to have breakfast downstairs. There was a great selection of meats, cheeses, eggs, cereals, sweets and breads, yoghurt - something for everyone. I would definitely stay here again.

We had a great time at Hotel Kooyk! Mary and her staff make you feel welcomed and we felt very comfortable staying here. The location was good, some walking is involved to the city center but we enjoyed it because we got to see the different neighborhoods in Amsterdam (there’s many shops, cafes and restaurants on the way.) We would definitely stay here again.

One staff ruined my impression

During my three nights stay in this hotel I have encountered several staff, they were all fine except for one blonde lady talking blunt and rude. When I first dropped off my luggage before check in, she said, you could leave here but at your own risk. I was taken back by this unwelcoming remark. The next day I went to ask whether I can have another room with dark curtain because my room had a white curtain which does not block lights. It was her again looking down with a stern face and said “We don’t have another room for you, you paid for what you have”. I found it very insulting. She could simply said we don’t have one.
Later I found out their second floor have nicer rooms with bigger shared shower and toilet than third floor ones where my room was. Room was clean so was toilet and shower but has soft bed and uncomfortable chair. You better bring a blind fold to block the light because curtain does not do it. Location was good but it does not really matter since tram is everywhere and frequent. My first night in Amsterdam I stayed with another hotel a bit more outside but was very pleasant. If there is a next time, I would choose a higher rated hotel then the one closer to city.

The hotel was in a very good spot only 30 minute walk from the city center. The staff are really nice. We had a couple of problems but they got sorted by the staff only 20 minutes later. The windows in the hotel don’t open very far and it gets really really hot. The amenities in the hotel are minimal. Toilets and showers are very clean. We did have a small incident where the lady that worked there said we’ll have a really nice window view on to the canal but all we could see from our room was a brick wall and you could see into other peoples rooms when the light was on.

Nice place to stay, especially the area. The only real negative was that when I paid online for my room, I'm 90% sure it said breakfast included, however, when I arrived they advised breakfast was not included... I should've checked my receipt after I purchased.... so I'm partly to blame!

The best thing about this hotel is its location. Close to museums, parks, restaurants, bars, transportation to/from airport (take bus #197 it's only 5 euros one way and stops about a 3-minute walk from hotel). The actual hotel is in an older building. The halls and stairways are narrow and the shared toilet was extremely tiny. The shared showers were good. The room we had was very basic. Its on par with staying in a private room in a hostel. The only thing that was a major inconvenience was that the manager refused to store our bags before check-in although luggage storage is a service indicated on hotels.com. She didn't offer us any alternatives or suggestions. Just an explanation that luggage storage is \"subject to availability.\" Luckily the other staff members were very helpful and polite to us.

Staff were difficult to contact when i rang to confirm booking from Australia.answers were vague and not very helpful.
When we arrived staff were the complete opposite. They were so helpful and friendly.
Stairs were so steep it was dangerous carrying heavy bags to the room.
Room had great views across the canel. Great prices for the area. We will come back but will need assistance to get bags up the stairs.

Close to the city center and good price

The two good points of this hotel are the localisation : 10 minutes by foot from the city center and the price : 180€ for two nights during the week in March, for two people.
Otherwise the matrass was very thin and uncomfortable, you can clearly hear your neighboors or everyone walking in the corridor.
The check in has been done by a young woman without any explication about the city, the two showers you share are very big and clean. The one toilet is very small but clean. The breakfast costs 10€. The view from the double room is the other double in front of it.

Very disappinted, no recommend to nobody!!!

I do not recommend this hotel to nobody who wants to nice stay in Amsterdam!!! The main problem that the room, toilet and corridor doors was very noisy when people going through and middle of the night when you tried to sleep always wake you up SO NOT possible sleeping at all. The Owner tried to help put some strips on the door to make to reduce the noise. But it did not worked. The hotel and the equipments are very old without renovation. In the double room we got \"double bed\" which was not suit for 2 people to sleep in comfortable. We knew that hotel facilites are including shared bathrooms and we accepted that one.The problem the shower was very tiny and no shelf to put the own soap or shampoo in, and no hook to put the towels or dry clothes for change after shower. The toilet room was very small and there is no room to move. We were very disappointed about this hotel.

Quick check in but 2pm is a bit late and is a very long wait if your on an early flight over. Only problem was check out was at 11AM and at 10:20AM a staff member was going around banging on all the doors saying check out now check out now. Hotel will keep baggage until 6PM which is a great service. Hotel is near trams restaurants bars Vondel park and shops definitley in a great location :-) if I was to go back to Amsterdam id go back to this hotel as prices are great and the location is perfect.

Poor condition and insufficient shared toilets

Limited private toilet/bathroom in the hotels. Only 1 toilet and 1 bathroom at each level of hotel, serving many many rooms. Toilet and bathroom very small and in very poor condition.

Very nice staff, small rooms but cozy and had very comfortable beds. great location! very close to vondel park and many restaurants! Wifi was free and very good quality! Overall amazing stay!

If there are other options you should explore them

The stairs are steep. The walls are thin. The sheets were clean but the floors were sticky. As One lies upon the narrow mattress the taped over smoke detector brought attention to the black mould in the ceiling corner. There were sparse furnishings on which to place your things. The closet sized bathroom was shared. But the management was hospitable and the major museum are nearby.

Great location as far as nightlife in amsterdam

There are shared bathrooms on each floor. The shower is extremely tiny so if you are claustrophobic this isn't the place for you. Hotel management is very rude.

Great value for money!

Great location, excellent breakfast

The breakfast was absolutely phenomenal. The location was great too for exploring the touristy things. The staff was nice and attentive. Rooms were fairly small, but typical in Europe.

About What You'd Expect

If you're looking for an inexpensive hotel in a good location, and you're not super picky, you'll be okay here. The shared bathroom and shower wasn't as bad as I expected. The room was decently clean. The location was great though. A two minute walk to a canal tour and the best nightlife. Overall, you get what you pay for.

A nice stay in Amsterdam

I was in this hotel 5 years ago and I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anybody. But hotel has changed. Nowdays is a nice hotel with tasty breakfast. It's a pity that still garden is not ready to relax inside.
Hotel is in the centre of Amsterdam near pubs and clubs. There are no toilets in the room but you have your private bathroom outside room.

Wonderful Experience

My friends and I enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Everything about it was exactly what we wanted. The location was great, our room was charming, and the staff were so helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

A little piece of home!

I was very pleased with my stay. There is a nice friendly feeling about the hotel. The Irish owner Mary was very welcoming as were the rest of the staff. The hotel was very clean and the showers and toilets were cleaned to a high standard. i would stay there again and would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to my friends.
