The room felt rather run down but was clean enough. There was no hot water when I arrived & no hot water when I woke in the morning of my 1-night stay so I gave up on the bathroom altogether.
Buying a hotel does not a hotelier make.

This review must be read in the context of a one-night stay in central London on a low budget.

Pros:

* Tidy room
* En suite toilet & shower
* Clean sheets
* Decent towel
* Decent bed
* Pleasant staff

Cons:

* Room was cold; can't control heat in room; told heat is only on at scheduled times
* Duvet not well-matched to room temperature
* Shower: anemic water pressure and never got truly hot
* Toilet/shower/sink area extremely small
* Breakfast limited to cereals, toast, and \"juice drinks\"

If you're looking for a truly comfortable stay, look elsewhere (and be prepared to pay accordingly). If you're looking for a place to sleep within a budget, this hotel will do.

Excellent Base of Operations

Really lovely hotel with character. Loved the oddly shaped rooms. They were clean and the bed was AMAZING. I have mobility issues and they were brilliant, offering a room on the ground floor.

This hotel is not suitable for someone in a wheelchair though as the reception is up 10 steps, but otherwise 10/10.

Stains, unrepaired damage and bed bugs!

The room was very poor. It it tired, scruffy and in a generally poor state. The bathroom was terrible. Although it didn't appear to be actually dirty there were stains and damaged things everywhere. The window didn't open and the extractor fan didn't work. Finally I have returned home to find I have bed bug bites over my body. I will be reporting them to the environmental health authority for the area.

Upon arrival i was rudely told i couldn't check in for another 2 hrs, no problem i took a walk. The place was filthy , i did take pics. On the Saturday when i was out someone was in my room , the bin was emptied but rubbish, that was not mine, was on the floor. The bed was like a brick, my window was cracked. The door key stopped working and I was told to move the lock when i went out so that I could get back in , leaving the door open and accessible, i asked for another towel....that seemed an inconvenience, even though the one that was left just about went round my 8stone frame. The shower/toilet was a joke....i wish i could include my pictures!!!!

This is not a hotel and should not be advertised as one. The top floor is difficult to reach—even for someone in good shape, and the narrow staircase is essentially impossible for those with limited mobility. The room is outdated, with stained carpets and a bathroom that doesn’t match the photos. Breakfast is very basic: just toast with jam or Nutella, instant coffee, cornflakes, and cheap orange juice. Overall, I was extremely disappointed with this place.

The staff were very nice checkin in and out.

I know it was a budget hotel, but it was very unclean, a lot of mould about and very dusty, although the beds themselves were clean.

Check out was 11:00 but around 09:00 we had a member of staff come into our room whilst we were in bed, we had locked our door but apparently the lock doesn’t work.

Ok, it was a single room, cheap as chips and had an en suite bathroom -toilet, basin and shower crammed into a tight space in the corner. It was a small room and very warm in there on on one of the hottest nights of the year. No A/C, and window open to a street that got noisy. That said, it was exactly what I expected for this low price. I needed to spend one night in London and to be near Kings Cross station. So no complaints from me. The room was old but clean.

We booked on a budget and did not expect frills but the room was cramped rather than small and while clean it looked neglected. The shower pressure was low and the toilet ran a lot after flushing. The mattress felt worn out.
Breakfast was basic but ok for the price and the staff member was polite and cheerful.

One of the worst hotels I have stayed in. Tiny little room on the third floor which was not very nice. No Aircon on the hottest day of the year so had to keep the window open which then meant very little sleep from the noise on the main road outside. With the state of the room we didn't even chance getting in the bed and slept on top. No tea or coffee facilities. All we were left with was some used milk pots and opened tea bags. Didn't even bother with breakfast as we were pretty much told to get in early or it would be too busy. Not worth it for what we were also told was tea, toast and serial. Not what I would call a continental breakfast. Passed three guys in the morning who had clearly had an awful night too and we're not happy. Certainly not worth the money even as a place to get ure head down, and that's from someone who often finds a floor to doss on anywhere when I'm at work. Definitely would not recommend or go back.

When we got to the Greenville Hotel there was a sign on the door that said to go next door to the Guildford hotel which we did an actually stayed in that hotel. The staff were pleasant the facilities were okay and we were happy with what we got.

The reviews of this place have been pretty harsh, so I booked with an open mind! Room was clean, and hotel small and certainly not fancy, but it absolutely met my needs for price point and location. There is a trick to using the hot water, and instructions are provided - on the desk in room. No frills, cheapest accommodation I could get in this area - will happily book again. Thank you.

This property to be honest how it receives it’s ok to run as a guest house!
It’s incredibly outdated, expensive, with a hideous bathroom, broken window, tv that doesn’t start, wifi that is limited, kitchen that is worse than a restaurant kitchen, what era is this place stuck in ?
Poor, definitely wouldn’t not book again.
The only positive thing were the reception staff which were welcoming and accommodating

Small room. uncomfortable bed. Tiny bathroom similar to an RV and not very clean.. weird smell when you shower.. WiFi is not free and you not only have to pay for each device but it also doesn’t work very well and even if you pay for a day it will shut off before 24 hours is up. The breakfast is literally just toast. The stairway up is unsafe with luggage’s. The key cards randomly stop working. Not worth the money.

Good value and helpful staff

Small budget hotel, well located for King's Cross and other public transport links. The building is old and shows signs of wear, but the room, although very small was perfectly adequate for a one night stay. It was clean and appeared to be fairly freshly decorated, and the carpet looked new. The ensuite was also tiny, but worked well and plentiful hot water. The breakfast was included, unusual for a hotel in this price range. The staff were very helpful. The radiator was not working ln arrival, but i was given an electric heater which was more than sufficient for the size of room. The only drawback i experienced was a loud noise from the plumbing while another guest used their shower. All in all a good experience and good value for money.

We needed a one night stay in a particular area .this did the job for us , it was cheap ,ok but wasn't fantastic.you get what you pay for .we could have paid three times as much so can't complain, would we stay again yes but not for more than two nights .breakfast was ok , bathroom not sure about !

Very poor hotel!

Very poor hotel. Ive stayed in over 50 hotels in london and this is one of the worst. Room was not the cleanest. Carpets hadnt been hoovered. My room had no towels and only had 1 small pot of milk. I asked for more then they gave me 1 considering i use 3 to make 1 cup of tea. The funniest thing was the breakfast which is displayed as continental. All they serve is drinks, toast and cereal - Thats it! No pastries, eggs nothing. The wifi is also chargabale. I couldn't believe the size on my room when i arrived. The bathroom was insanely small. It smelt of paint. Not sure what they painted as the room needed so much work. The one positive is the lady on reception was nice. But theres no chance i would stay here again! Theres cheaper hotels in london that offer a better hotel for its guests.

Many places that are a bit dated get unfairly bashed online.

This one isn't just a bit dated, its actively dirty, and run down.

Broken light shades, lights, fittings, furniture.
No mattress protector, 1 pillow, a floor you don't want to put bare feet on.
Big time mould on shower door, shower head v dirty.
Grime and paint oversplash on so much stuff.
Smoke from window where smokers smoke and throw cigarette ends into the area outside.

The Grenville is combined with hotel Guilford. hotel. I booked for 3 beds, one night with 2 kids. The pictures i saw while booking was totally the opposite of the room that was given. We were given a basement room. I told the Indian lady i have phobia for basement, She was very arrogant, she said, \"if you dont want it someone else will take it immediately\".
We arrived at about 5pm, very tired with 2kids, she couldn't consider that. She was ready to give the room to someone else. My kids were sad and tired. I had no choice because i had already paid and it is non refundable. Room 401 is in the basement, is the worst hotel room i have ever seen. Very dirty, it smelling, terrible, every corner of the room is dirty and even some dirty tissue on the window rack. I called to ask for Internet wife, another Indian guy picked and demanded 2.50£ for per each phone because we have 3 phones. I told him no i would not pay such, he then arrogantly said, i will give a code for free but know that next time is payable. The staffs are terrible and very hostile.

The good thing about this area, is just few stops to St.pancras train station

Needs improvement, uncomfortable bed

Bed was terrible. Got a really sore back 2 nights in so they changed the mattress, but it wasn’t better, the bed base itself was flimsy and cheap. The pillow was not very good. Staff were friendly. Breakfast finished at 9am, far too early. Room was clean but in corners dust, old coins, pen lid on window cil etc, you can tell a deep clean hasn’t been done in over 6 months. Bathroom sink was small which would be ok if it didn’t have a broken disused soap dispenser in the most awkward position. Bumped my head on it and it fell off. They provide bar soap so an unused soap dispenser is a waste of space. Interiors a bit dated but instead of new curtains and a lick of paint, you’d put up with dated interiors if the bed was comfortable. For a hotel this is a must. The heating in my room was stuck on, so when I returned to the hotel it was so hot. I’d prefer to be able to turn the radiator off. The hotel needs a little fine turning to be more comfortable, remove unnecessary items such as soap dispensers, and extend breakfast until 10am. Would not stay again for the same or similar price other hotels offer comfortable beds and good pillows in a similar location. The owners should have a little more pride in what they do, the staff were hardworking and friendly.

You need to know what you’re getting with a place like this. It’s not luxury, but it’s still a bit pricey for what it is. The room was OK, but it was far too hot. Needs a fan or aircon desperately. Breakfast was nothing special, but it’s better than nothing. Not enough towels supplied. Great locatiom though and it’s ok for a cheap couple of nights. You wouldn’t want to stay for a week though. They charge extra for wifi, I didn’t need it so no idea whether it’d be any good, but charging extra for wifi is crazy these days.

Firm but fair review

Stayed for one night. Staff friendly but building very dated. Our room was dirty and very dusty with a broken window pane sellotaped together. Bathroom extremely small like something found in a caravan and there was no hot water. On a plus, the bed was surprisingly comfy and the hotel was quiet. Breakfast was very basic but did offer branded cereals. The luggage storage facilities leaves a lot to be desired; literally leaving your cases in the breakfast room with no security of it actually being there when you return.

I checked in and went to my room. There was an annoying drip coming from the bathroom. Who could sleep with that? I went back to the desk and demanded a different room, which was provided. I stayed 3 nights due to the convenient location. No frills cheap hotel near Russell Square and the British Museum.

Run down hotel with fake breakfast and no wifi

This is an old run down hotel that is connected to another rundown hotel. Shouldn’t even really be legal to run a hotel on hotels.com that is actually a separate hotel. There was no WiFi and the maid woke me up every morning unsolicited. The worst was the breakfast they only offer from 8-9:30 am. If consists of spoiling warm milk, stale cereal, and instant coffee. They shouldn’t be allowed to pretend they serve breakfast. Mold was everywhere as were run down old fixtures and appliances.

This is a budget hotel so you get what you pay for. Staff were great, really friendly and continental breakfast was included in my room rate. Bedding and towels clean and fresh. The property could do with a freshen up as paintwork faded and shower room akin to something in an old campervan/ caravan. I had a single room which was ok for 1 night to put my head down but wouldnt want to stay in a single room for any longer.

Check in/out was at a different hotel 2 doors down. Rooms were very dated and didn't look like they had been hoovered for weeks. Room smelt of stale cigarettes probably from years ago. My short stay at Grenville Hotel was amazing, I got what I expected for what I paid. The staff were very friendly and approachable. The only thing that could be improved is the overall cleanliness of the room from my perspective, and perhaps fix appliances that are not seem to be working.

I'd booked the hotel as a cheap last minute option before seeing all of the negative reviews.

The hotel and communal areas are in need of restoration, and there was a smell and many areas needed to be cleaned.

My room however was clean, including bedding and the bathroom area.
Unfortunately the hot water and the bathroom light weren't working but other than these things, the room was absolutely fine.

I wouldn't rush back to stay, but if I needed a single room at short notice again, I'd book here.

Receptionist was absolutely lovely and helpful as well. No issues at all with the staff.

The worst I've ever stayed in.

In nearly 30 years of staying in all classes of hotel around the world this was the worst. Booked for 3 days - checked out after 1 and regretted being there that long. The room was in the basement (no working lights in the corridor) the stairs smelt like someone had urinated down them, the room looked like it hadn't been cleaned - ever. The en-suite was a moulded plastic contraption in the corner with no working light, a dribble of water and mould. Whatever you're looking for in a hotel - this isn't it.

No Elevators, Very hard to move bags up stair , 2 flights with narrow steps, bathroom too narrow to use, no place to stand in front of sink. Your head hits to railing or door hooks, every time you turn in bathroom, Breakfast not much choice, no eggs.

Rather than the poor attempt at providing a desultory breakfast of toast and tea -- there are a dozen cafés within a short walk that provide a hot breakfast -- spend the money to hire actual cleaners, not somebody's layabout son who can't even hoover the extremely dirty carpets. You have the most important thing: convenient location. Keep the premises clean and you will have non-stop and reasonably satisfied customers. Despite the noise (>_<) wow, Guilford Street is noisy. I have low expectations for a convenient cheap hotel near KX but you managed to fall far below them.

The single room No.611 was dirty. The bathroom was disgusting. I couldn't even bring myself to use the shower. I felt the need to wash my hands every time I touched anything.

Avoid like the plaque unless you want it

This is the most dirtiest run down hotel I have ever stayed in - avoid like the plaque - I have to say I’m disappointed that Hotels.com list this dump . It wasn’t worth £20 let alone the £93 for a grotty room that was disgusting

Good cheap room with small bathroom and breakfast included. Would stay again.

Is basic & cheap and short walk to Russell Square Station.

Shower not very warm & shower head cracked but is cheap single room accommodation in London so get what you pay for.

Nasty place

The room I had in this place was pretty nasty. I don't normally reply or post reviews, but this place leaves me wondering if I stated there any longer I might get a disease or more. The room I had, the bed was multi colored and stained with who knows what. The bed was positioned against a hard wall and the sheets were easily moved off the bed exposing the dirtyness underneath the sheets. The bathroom is incredibly small and uncomfortable to sit in and take showers in. The TV, which was a computer monitor and not a TV, barely worked and the phone in the room did not work and had no signal to the concierge's office, if there was that office.

Spend an extra $10 to stay somewhere else or better yet stay at a hostel for much cheaper somewhere else and stay disease-free.

My wife was in tears

Not at all what I hoped for for an anniversary weekend in London. No comparison with the description or write-up. It was actually the hotel next door to the Grenville. A hostel for the price of a reasonable hotel. We didn't stay and moved to a much better hotel for not much more money. Asked for a partial refund but no response. Got a voucher from hotels.com

The hotel could use a lot of upgrading but for the price it works. The TV connection was horrendous but the rest of the room was quaint. My only major issue was that it was very cold and damp in the room and there was no way to control the temperature and bedding was limited. Otherwise, the staff was pleasant and the location was very good.
