The room was nice & characterful. There was a lack of space around the beds & access to the window could only be had, by climbing over the bed.
Staff were not available & although he helped me down the stairs with my bag (I use a crutch) he was not very helpful in the dining area. Also the text re breakfast was misleading. As a Londoner I wouldn't say it was local to The Oval.

The room was clean, staff friendly and plenty of milk, coffee and tea in the shared dinning room. There was a wide plethora of DVDs to choose from, that you can take back to your room to watch, but the player in my room wasn't working. Overall I'd rate it as a 7 out of 10.

My stay was awful! The staff at the reception clearly did not expect me. The room did not have any heating, and there were no hangers. The worst was the condition of the toilet, sink and shower room. All very dirty. The shower was faulty. The sink was congested. The 'help' online was not helpful at all. They asked me to send photos of the dirty areas so that they can clean them. Totally unacceptable.

The bad state of the hotel is due to the cost cutting measures, which were introduced 1-2 years ago by the new management OYO. Gradually the hotel became one of the worst. It used to be basic but clean and friendly. It is now dirty and poorly managed. OYO sends a large number of messages but the quality of their service is poor.

While it was in a great location as I stayed for a concert in Brixton, the bathroom did not have toilet paper and the room was pretty cold even with the window closed. But overall it was a clean, dry place to stay for one night especially as a student, not for longer than that.

Simple check in/out - friendly staff.

Accessibility would be an issue - lots of flights of stairs to my room - but if that’s not a major requirement I’d recommend it. My second stay as I go to an annual film festival just off Coldharbour Lane, and half the price of the Premier Inn I used to use in Brixton.

Our room was clean but very basic and what we consider to be ‘shabby’.
Simple updating would be so easy to do and make the hotel so much better.
First thing we did was closed the curtains which was difficult to do without fear of breaking the curtail pole.
We were disappointed and so glad we only needed to stay one night.

Will definitely stay here again. There is a kitchen for guest use. The setting is between a hotel and a hostel. Getting the code for check in took a little longer than expected since there is no front desk staff at night. But everything went smoothly after. Also the area appeared a bit sketchy at night, however it's a safe neighborhood with really nice houses around and we had no issues. The Turkish restaurants around the area were really good!

The place was kept very clean, and the Indian staff warmed up to me after about 4 days. The rooms were beautifully themed for Indian culture. Door locks need to be double protected and close solid, so as not do bang when a window is open. The street is VERY noisy at night , and it’s easy to hear people talking in their rooms. These noises are not a good combination for finding sleep if you like to do so between 9-12pm.

The place met my budget, and there were plenty of places to eat within walking distance.

No one stated clearly that this property is a walk up. There is no elevator and guests I'm sure are carrying several pounds of luggage. If you don't have an elevator - at the very least - you should have an employee available to help carry things upstairs. I also complained about the lack of A/C and was told by messaging that they can't do anything about that. Note that this was the summer, and lack of A/C is unacceptable. I would never stay here again, terrible location, VERY old property, and a bit creepy with all the random art everywhere. I didn't know in advance this was a self check in type of place - don't advertise as a hotel, this should be advertised like an airbnb or something. Random foreign people claiming to be part of the staff - they had no label or indication that they work there...definitely a lack of professionalism. Also I asked to leave my luggage somewhere safe after check out, and they took my bags and put them in what looked like the kitchen. No lock, no safety, no idea or clue if my things are in tact or safe. Just ridiculous - NEVER STAYING HERE AGAIN - BUYER BEWARE!

Didn’t stay longer than 10 minutes.

We didn’t even stay in the end. We were in the room for 5 minutes and immediately booked another hotel. It was 31 degrees outside so was obviously going to be hot but no air con was a problem. The fan provided could barely blow air it was useless. The code given for the front door was wrong so thankfully some people were leaving who let us in. Our room was up 5 flights of stairs and was a maze to find. Our window opened an inch and faced a wall 20cm away so no air getting in. The bathroom was dirty and the shower couldn’t get cold it was either hot or hotter which isn’t ideal in the winter. We sat on the bed to book another hotel and you could feel every spring. It was just an awful experience from start to finish.

So very very disappointed with way we are being treated.
Hotel cancelled our booking 4hrs before checking, saying Full refund granted.
Now hotel say we didnt turn up so have to pay.
Noway cam i recommend this hotel, what should of been a lovely weekend in London, turned out to be so stress full.

A great stay at Church Street Hotel!

The hotel was excellent, incredibly comfortable with everything we needed for a short stay. The room was really well equipped and incredibly spacious.
It felt a little dated but was all comfortable and in working order.
Staff were very friendly and helpful too.
Overall a great stay and excellent value for money!

I needed a hotel near to King's Hospital so I booked this one as it was the cheapest and the closest. There were lots of stairs up to my room and the hotel is a rabbit warren. The room code I was sent on WhatsApp was 6 digits. It was wrong and I had to walk down 4 flights of stairs to speak to the receptionist to get the correct 4 digit code. The shower could've done with a clean. I appreciated the towels and bed linen were clean. The decor is even more garish than the pictures convey. Lots of religious iconography abound. It did what I wanted it to do, but it's the worst hotel I've stayed in for at least 20 years.

Couldn't get past the bed from one side due to a shelf being in the way. 2 air con units in the room and neither actually cooled. The top window was wide open and we couldn't reach to shut it meaning it was noisy all night. We had hardly any toilet paper and no reception to ask for more. Breakfast was a choice of cereal, bread that had clearly just been defrosted in a microwave, a few slices of cheap supermarket ham and cheese triangles. We did see 2 staff as we left who didn't even acknowledge our 'goodbye'. Such hospitable hosts. Definitely the worst hotel we've stayed in in London.

We booked this hotel based on it being featured in The Guardian .. but .. things have clearly changed since then.
Check in for us was ok, except our room had been changed to a double bed, when we were expecting a triple which had been booked. Luckily our third person was unable to join us. After a discussion I was offered free breakfast. Some other people had arrived to be told there was a problem with the booking and they could go to Peckham! The hotel reception did not help them further by funding a taxi or giving clear information.
The room - fine .. but not the cleanest. Wonky plug socket.. bulb not working in bedside light .. bathroom needed a deep clean.
Breakfast .. DIY .. ok for us but not for others - especially those who wanted an early breakfast ( before 8am). Scant selection of bread, ham, cheese .. but nice yogurts and coffee.
Nobody there to keep area clean and the bins were not emptied all week. We cleaned the sink.
No drinks for the honesty bar.
Hotel staff need to up their hospitality game or lose their reputation.

Ignore the inflated positive rating this hotel enjoys from before it changed management. Have been to this hotel twice before and it was always great value for money. This most recent time it had really degraded in value, however, presumably because of new management. There is a fully automated system for checking in now which means that if you arrive, like us, on a sunday or in the evening there might be no one to help check you in.

Despite it being a challenge to find a member of staff when we needed help, someone immediately found us when we stepped into the breakfast room (they have cameras watching you) to tell us we had to pay. Charming. Of course that person did not stay to help make coffee for the hotel guests as someone used to do.

The dining area is terrible compared to what it used to be. Same price (maybe more?) with a quarter of the options. The rooms were less clean, bedding was nasty.

All in all a really disappointing experience. Lost a good hotel.

Decent for the price. Staff was nice, easy to find, and about an hour walk to main tourist attractions. However, we were on the attic floor and it was so hot, like walking into a wall of heat as soon as you hit the top stair. Also, there is no safe, very minimal hanging space, and one of the lights by the bed didn’t work. We also got one full size pillow for a stay with 2 adults and there was no staff at the desk in the evening to ask for another quickly.

There’s no elevators, we struggled to take our heavy luggage’s to the 4th floor. The stairs are so narrow. This was not stated on the website that the hotel have no elevators if you have disabilities please book another hotel because the receptionist won’t likely help you to change to a ground floor room.

Cute Hotel With A Major Flaw

We stayed at this hotel for one night and were initially very impressed. The hotel has a charming theme, and the price was very reasonable. Check-in was straightforward, and we were shown to our room, which was well-equipped with everything we needed for our stay. The honesty bar downstairs was a thoughtful touch, adding to the cozy and welcoming vibe.

However, our experience took a drastic turn during the night. Our room faced the car park of the neighboring leisure center, and from around 1 AM to 4:30 AM, the area turned into a scene of chaos. Cars were blasting music, headlights shone directly into our room, and people were shouting loudly. One car repeatedly left and returned, leading us to suspect illicit activity, potentially drug deals.

The biggest issue is that there was no staff on-site during the night. When we tried to call reception, no one was available to help, leaving us to consider calling the police ourselves. This lack of overnight support is a glaring problem, as guests are left entirely on their own to deal with serious disturbances.

While the room itself was comfortable, the inability to get any sleep completely ruined our stay. This hotel has great potential but urgently needs to address its nighttime management and security issues. Without these improvements, I sadly cannot recommend it.

And the location is perfect, many buses to central London and railway station.

Unfortunately I haven't stayed at my prebooked room.I had left after 2 hours because room was cold, no heating, no other iptions had been offered.
When we were showed the room I was told rhere is no heating in this room. I said I was feeling poorly I would prefer warm room. Later I was given key to the room 31. But after a while switching on the heating I had noticed the radiator is cold. I had asked at reception some electric heater, but was told none is available. By reception staff I was told I could contact his Manager and speak about the issue! I had never experienced such poor customer service. I shall try to claim the refund. No one contacted me after leaving, my evening plans were changed, as I travelled back home late midnight.

Mattress needs replacing, felt springs, was very uncomfortable.
Heard every noise from rooms next to, and above walking around, tv noise and alarms in the morning.
I’ve been here a few times and although this is a cheap alternative I felt this time was very uncomfortable.

I also had to wait outside in the cold for 15 mins as no one was on reception to book in. I pressed the reception button - no answer, I rung both telephone numbers - no answer.

It was freezing so it only got worse when the quality of the bed was poor.

Staff were great and really helpful .The common areas were a little tired and could be cleaner . I stayed in three different rooms including a single without facilities (which I would not recommend ). The doubles were comfortable and clean though needed TV systems upgrading . Overall this hotel was the best of a small choice of hotels within walking distance of Kings College Hospital .

I loved the decor, and loved being able to help myself to very good coffee and tea. I didnt have the breakfast it looked very nice though, simple but nice products. I liked that i had a sink in my room, shared bathroom was clean and i never had to wait. Lovely toiletries. Lots of nice places to eat on same street. My only criticism was my bed was very creaky and i would recomend ear plugs. Overall it was lovely and as a lone traveller it felt safe and if in the area again i would definately stay here again.

Great price, super clean room and shared bathroom with nice toiletries. Weird decor inside seems to be going for kitsch on a budget. Loud carpets and medieval-style doors, not really my thing. Room was too hot with no fan or air con and very noisy, being on Camberwell's main street. Was given a code to enter late but I deleted it from my phone. No late receptionist on duty, presumably to save money. So had to call a number and it took ages for them to figure out how to open the door.

I really enjoyed my stay here! The only cavaut that I have is that it doesn't have an elevator. The staff is very helpful offering to take my suitcases up and downstairs. Which I feel bad in asking them to do. Besides that I enjoyed my stay!

Good hotel, single room at the top of hotel, very hot room had to sleep with window open and top of bed but wasn’t an issue. Breakfast ok nice whole meal bread and cereal, but had run out of certain items. £8 a bit pricey. Bonus on 36 bus route which is 24hrs.
