All was perfect walking distance to metro and train and many places to eat. They have a McD and KFC 24:7 the only problem was there was a loud party next store until 4am and was not able to sleep at all :/. Other then that it was perfect location

We enjoyed our stay. It is a typical old style French hotel with small rooms and bathrooms and lifts squeezed in. The area is outside the usual for tourists but not far from Los Gobelins where we have stayed before. I would decribe it as 'mixed' but it's a pretty walk in through the back streets to the Sorbonne area. The hotel staff were vey welcoming and breakfast was excellent but we were there when it was very hot and steamy and not having air conditioning knocked down some of our marks. If you want a well priced hotel within walking/metro distance of the central sites you could do a lot worse.

Good hotel wrong location.

The staff are very freindly and the rooms are in good condition and clean. On the down side I had to open the shower door so I could sit on the toilet as there was only about 9inch between the tiolet and the shower. The location of the hotel is not good for sightseeing, either expect to walk 8 miles per day or spend about €10 per person on travel.

This hotel is in Paris, if you only need a clean bed and a shower and feel secure, the basics. Plenty of restaurants and supermarket, bakery near by. Metro is only 2 blocks from hotel. Plan to do your travel around town by Metro, very easy to used. Used metro from airport, is plenty of help if you don't speak French (Maps, etc.) cheaper that way. Paris can be pricey. The hotel offer pay breakfast, no a/c. We enjoy our stay.

It was my first time in Paris so i booked this hotel near the pick up point for my italy bus tour for the following day. They gave me a street view room but unfortunately the view i have was a high rise building construction. The room is clean but the flooring is old so you can hear loud noise when you walk. The hotel stairs and hallway was also dark and unpleasing. but the good side was the hotel is within reasonable price and walking distance to metro and good resto and cafe. Mcdonalds and KFC is just few minutes walk too.

I had a short stay to visit family and to see the sights. The hotel is very close to two Metro stations, with one direct line from Eurostar at Gare du Nord and another that takes you to within a three-minute walk of Notre Dame.
Spotlessly clean, the room was modest but perfectly adequate, with simple, modern furnishings, a very comfortable bed and a good TV. The shower room was a little tight on space but workable

An enjoyable stay at Ecrivains

Really enjoyed our stay here, well connected to transport links both metro and buses. A compact and comfortable room with pleasant and helpful staff. A good night out was in the Latin quarter which was a short hop away (2-3 bus stops) with plenty of traditional restaurants and bars. Despite recent tragic events, glad we went to Paris in the end as such a great city and one could only admire the fortitude of the people. Vive la France!

Recommended if you're after a decent budget hotel

Had a lovely 3 night stay in one of the top floor rooms, which are small but that's expected for this price range in Paris. Clean room, shame about the lack of air con - it was sweltering and we found it hard to sleep even with the window open and the little fan on. Had requested a room with a bathtub when booked and was about to be given one with a shower room when checked in - when I asked if there were any rooms with bathtubs (as advertised) I was told no, and then yes and eventually got moved to a room with a bathtub. The result was what I wanted and achieved without mush fuss, but it would have been nice if my specific request had been read and taken into consideration... What's the point of being able to make special requests when booking if the hotels don't read them? Other than that it was was great, it's in a quiet neighbourhood and close to the métro - or grab a vélib and cycle downhill into town!

I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel, the staff are very friendly and the rooms are very clean, affordable and even fairly roomy for European standards.

The hotel is located very close to a metro station but is also about 25 min walk to Notre-Dame Cathedral. There are quite a few restaurants and local bakeries around are also a lot cheaper than in the downtown area. I also felt safe when walking around the area at night.

Would definitely recommend this hotel!

I stayed here for two nights on a quick stop before heading back to the States. Although the room was tight, it was clean, comfortable, and quiet. It seems to have been recently renovated, so the furniture is all new. The front desk staff is very courteous and available 24 hours. As a solo female traveler, this part of the 13th arrondissement couldn't have been a safer and more convenient place to stay - the Place d'Italie metro stop is right around the corner, so no need to walk a long distance if returning from a night out. There is also a police station just down the street. The surrounding area has everything you need in terms of groceries, ATM, pharmacy, boulangerie (RIGHT next door, in fact), and a plethora of casual restaurants just a block away. I would definitely stay here again!

I stayed at Hotel des Ecrivains for 4 nights. The hotel is clean, you have all the necessary in the rooms and the staff was welcoming! It located in a perfect location just 1 min walking distance to Place d'Italie, where you have a shopping centre and the most important the metro! I really enjoyed my stay there.

We booked a double room with en-suite shower for a weekend stay. The room was very clean and had a safe, hair-dryer. Fairly small room but standard for Paris. The bed was extremely comfortable. 24 hour reception. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel but there was a good selection for a continental breakfast (cereals, pastries, toast, cheese, cold meats). Our room overlooked the street and we were not disturbed by any noise, however during the week there might be more activity (building works opposite). Great location, with metro stations (Gobelins and Place d'Italie) a few minutes' walk away and good local cafes and restaurants. Basic hotel amenities but good value for money. A hospitality tray in the room and a warmer welcome at reception would have made a pleasant stay even better! We would stay here again.

Easy to get to and from the hotel. Older building and small room, but quite functional. Very helpful staff. Reasonably quiet area and room. Fortunately the room was on the first half floor, so it wasn't necessary to use the one-person size elevator, from which we would have had to walk down half a flight of stairs from anyway.

My son and I had a GREAT stay at this hotel. We arrived and there was contraction on the building across the street. I asked if there was anything in the back of building, facing the courtyard and the woman at the desk \"upgraded\" us to a very nice room on the 5th floor. She did not up charge us and was very nice the whole time we were there. We had an excellent stay with great front desk people! Merci Mille fois! Les Canadiens!

The hotel was nice and newly renovated. Everyone we encountered there was very nice. The bathroom is large and the room was spacious. The bakery and restaurants near by were very good and reasonably priced. (The Pizza Del Navona was amazing and they were so polite and friendly). The hotel is very close to a main subway station that made it easy to get a round. There is even a mall near by. The main draw back and the reason I did not rate it higher was due to the lack of AC and/or fan. My wife and can tolerate the heat but we needed some air to circulate and without a fan it was just uncomfortable most nights. It didn't help that we were there during a heatwave like they have not seen in years. Depending on the time of year you go this hotel is perfect for the price.

Stepping into the elevator, one feels coming back to a time of early 20th century. It is so tiny, only one one person with a large suitcase. One exits the elevator between two floors, so it would be a problem with a heavy luggage. The room is very compacted without air conditioning, the fan is noisy. There is no screen in the window, so mosquito will fly in if the window is opened.

The location of the hotel is pretty good, pretty close to the subway station. The room is pretty clean, and shower works well.

Would Gladly Stay Again/Recommend

This was my first visit to Paris, and I was completely unprepared for choosing where to book my hotel! We were coming in by train to Gare du Nord and realized pretty quickly that the hotel was very much south of not only the train station, but most of the city. The hotel and staff were lovely. Obviously the room was small but so clean and cozy the size didn't even matter. There is a metro station just around the corner, about a 2 minute walk, so we were able to access & navigate the city easily. The neighborhood seemed safe and really pleasant (although we weren't around much). I would stay here again.

Great Hotel for Price -- Highly recommended

Great location by the Place d'Italie and several major lines. Made getting around in Paris a breeze. Room was decently sized for the price and very comfortable as long as you don't mind laying down vs sitting.

Staff all spoke English and was very helpful. Only real complaint was that one of the drains was missing a trap and would cause the bathroom to occasionally smell faintly to moderately of the sewer. Running the water briefly cleared it up rapidly and repeated trips on the subway lessened any impact.

Stayed in this hotel for a Romantic break in Paris. The location is excellent and well connected by the Metro, with the nearest Metro station just a few minutes walk. Lots of cafes/bars/restaurants nearby, ideal for breakfast. The room was small but functional, our only critism is that the room was extremely hot even with the heating off. Otherwise a great base for a trip to Paris

Love the 13th and this hotel is close to the Metro, shopping and fun areas. Clean with friendly service but no frills. Didn't have breakfast and would not want to based on what I saw (nothing special). Wifi was reliable, bed was comfortable and noise level was moderate (could hear things in the hall and there was some construction outside).

Have stayed here twice and on the second trip we had to cancel part of our stay as we arrived ill and needed to return home. We arrived after about 30 hours travel from Thailand at 10am and they let us check in and gave us breakfast which had just closed. I was very impressed and would definitely use this hotel again.

Decent Choice

After checking in, I was surprised that the rooms were of decent size when compared to other comparable European hotels. Not a ton of room but plenty, considering you don't come to Paris for the hotel. More importantly they were clean and reasonably modern.

There is no real parking at the hotel but nearby (3-4 blocks) I found a reasonably priced option nearby that was cheaper than what the hotel told me about, called Autosur.

The location of the hotel itself is within walking distance from Les Gobelins and Place d'Italie metro stations, so has good access to the rest of the city. The hotel itself is walking distance from some sites like the national history museum. The staff is a little blunt and to the point, but not unfriendly. The price is also cheaper than many other hotel options in Paris, but it is a big city so you won't find a cheap hotel.

While there isn't anything really outstanding about this hotel, the price and location are about right, plus free wireless internet, for a weekend getaway to Paris. Safe travels!

Staff were very friendly and even helped with our broken French. We were visiting for our Christmas break and Hotel de Ecrivains was a nice peaceful place to rest each night. Metro station was about a 3 minute walk which is quite convient.If you're looking for a nice inexpensive place while visiting Paris this is a great choice.

Hotel d'Ecrivains review

Simple, modest and unpretentious this hotel was ideal for my short stay.

It is classed as three stars locally.

The staff were courteous and friendly, English was spoken if required, and the 9F breakfast was quite adequate, although arguably one could obtain a decent breakfast for less in one of the many local cafés. I was not in the best of health during my stay and was very grateful to the young lady receptionist who provided me with a small kettle, cup and tea bags when I requested them ( I was suffering from a nasty virus and desperate to soothe my throat ).

I stayed in a standard double room, basic but clean and tidy, and with everything I needed. Apart from a kettle! Next time I would take one with me or buy a small travel kettle locally. The bathroom was clean and well maintained ( shower only but fine for me, and no bidet, so comparing this to a recent trip to Florence and a stay on a similarly priced hotel, the bathroom scored a little lower in terms of space and facilities. A hair dryer was provided, though not very powerful. The bathroom was literally in a cupboard partitioned off from the room, as is so often the case in smaller places, and though adequate was cramped, with the towels placed high on chrome shelves since there was no wall space for a towel rail. It is near to Place d Italie Metro Station. There are eateries and a Carefour store nearby, which was convenient for us to grab some food. The lift is very small though. Three of us with three small luggage bags could not fit into the lift! However, it's better than those apartments with no lifts! Staff were helpful. Room was clean.Overall our stay there was pleasant.

Simple, Clean and fine for sleeping

We were there for 5 nights to look at Paris. For the price it was good value and we enjoyed the historic links with early writers in France. We enjoyed the simplicity of the place and the very French feel, including the classic French breakfasts
The tiny elevators were a bit too cosy at times, but adequate.
There are so many great little restaurants and cafes in the neighbourhood. We always received very courteous and helpful assistance from all the staff we met.

I used this hotel often when it was called Hotel des Arts. The new version is more modern and stylish in its decor, of course. All the same, room furnishings are impractical, with very little space to move around, nowhere to store small clothing items and tiny bathroom. Staff were perfectly pleasant. The area is lovely, non-touristy, with lots of great little stores, restaurants, bars and cinemas and excellent transportation options.

Great little inexpensive hotel a short cab ride away from where you would want to be in Paris. Very nicely and newly decorated; OK if slightly rudimentary breakfast; nice staff, making this a genuinely OK three star Paris hotel. Don't listen to the moaners who say the lift is small: It is exactly the same size as most three star hotel lifts and if you find this a problem, try room 2 on the ground floor, which, for a three star hotel, is uncommonly large and with a truly gigantic bathroom!

The room was very clean and had been redecorated very recently. Only the shelf in the bathroom looked a bit dated but nothing to really about really.

No AC so might be uncomfortable if your not used to the heat. Great location being near Place d'Italie subway station. Only took us 15 minutes by subway to get to most major attractions.

Quaint Hotel

This was a really small hotel but in a good part of Paris and recently remodeled. The rooms were tiny but we expected this as most Paris rooms are. The hotel unfortunately did not let us check-in early. The staff wasn't too sure on recommendations to eat, especially since we had a vegetarian with us on the trip. Overall, it was a good hotel for the price and would definitely stay again if I am on a budget.

Charming Hotel

This hotel was lovely. It's located near the Place d'Italie metro station with nice restaurants near by and a very friendly and accommodating staff. Our room was very cute, clean and the perfect place to stay in Paris. We were about 20mins by metro from the Eiffel Tower and even though we arrived at 9:30am, we were able to leave our luggage and tour the city - that was a great bonus! Many thanks!!

Small but reliable, clean room & great staff

Although Hotel de Ecrivains was very clean, the rooms were very small, especially bathroom. Staff was very nice and helpful. Location involved a walk to the Metro station, but was accessible to most tourist destinations in Paris. Several restaurants, pubs, and bakeries nearby.

Good location, small rooms

The hotel is near the metro (lines 5, 6 and 7) which makes visiting a lot easier. There is an RER B station at 4 stops on line 6 ( for those going to Charles De Gaulle airport). There is a nice couscous restaurant next door and a few bank machines less than a block away. The only thing that I didn't like was the size of the room ...the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was adequate with a nice shower.

Hotel location is okay. Close to the place d' italie metro and walking distance to a shopping centre/supermarket.

Bed was too small and fan was not good at all. It was warm inside the room. Our room was next to a courtyard of locals. Noisy and all you here was loud voices and early in the morning loud noise from neighborhood. Unpleasant for us. Didn't sleep at all for 4 days.

Hôtel des Ecrivains

This was our first time in Paris so we were a bit concerned about where the hotel might be situated! We were delighted to discover it was in a lovely neighbourhood with wonderful cafes/bars and shops.
On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by friendly helpful staff who were able to converse with us in English. The room was very clean and well laid out. The view through the balcony was the only slight negative as it was opposite a derelict police station that had been abandoned some 3 years previously.
Overall we were delighted with the hotel and would definitely return.

Near metro, clean, comfortable

Perfect budget hotel. Comfy beds, bathroom simple and functional, including hair dryer and a pull out mirror! Small but that's Paris. Several good food options nearby. Would stay again and recommend.

So handy for the centre

I enjoyed it very much and would stay again. Our room was slightly difficult get luggage around the foot of the bed, and a kettle to make tea or coffee would be good, but the helpful staff were great and let me park my wheelchair in the kitchen.

The shower water is so cold

1. The room is very small, also the elevator is very very small it can only afford 2 people at a time, more
2. The staff are very pleasant.
3. The shower water is soooo cold, there is no warm water, that is the most terrible thing!!

Nice little hotel

friendly staff, close to restaurants, nice brasseries just down the street, buses take you right down to the centre of paris, metro close by as well .... only drawback no a/c, so it would be warm in the summer, the court yard rooms are quieter then the street facing rooms ....

Loved this hotel

The location of Ecrivains was superb - out of the touristy fray but close enough to get to sites easily. Close to metro lines and very quiet. Hotel staff were warm and helpful. Room was small but absolutely clean and comfortable. Bring your own shampoo and no coffee in the room but I'm not sure how common that is in more typical Parisian hotels. We will definitely come back.

best location

Best location (across from police station, 30m from metro station PLACE d'ITALIE). If you visit in august you don't play parking the whole month on certain streets of Paris. The one on which the hotel is located and the adjacent one are free. There is a boulangerie on the corner which is very good and cheap for coffee and pies. The area is very quiet and is 30m away from a boulevard filled up with terraces. If you want you could walk to the Eiffel Tower it takes about an hour but metro is cheap as well (1.5 euro/pers). Hotel clean and good for people who are there to visit and not expecting a 5 star hotel.
