WARNING: Luggage stolen — hotel accepted responsibility but refuses civil compensation

I stayed at Hotel Otakar in July 2025. During my stay, my luggage was stolen from the hotel’s locked luggage room. The hotel has accepted responsibility in writing for this loss, confirming that the theft occurred while my belongings were under their care.

However, they are now refusing to provide civil compensation, wrongly insisting that only the police can deal with it. This is incorrect. Civil and criminal matters are legally separate. The police investigate the crime — but the hotel still has a legal duty under civil law to compensate me for all property lost due to their admitted negligence.

I submitted a reasonable, itemised claim based on current replacement value. Instead of resolving the matter professionally, I received dismissive replies accusing me unfairly and rejecting my civil compensation claim outright when I’m the victim in a situation resulting from negligence.

Staff repeatedly failed to engage with the issue properly or provide any meaningful path to resolution — compounding the distress and damage caused.

This incident caused serious disruption, financial loss, and completely ruined my trip.

I am pursuing this through all formal consumer protection channels in the Czech Republic, and will continue to do so until the matter is resolved fairly and in full.

If you value your property, your peace of mind, and basic accountability, avoid Hotel Otakar at all costs.

Nice place for a short city break

We were surprised that entrance to the breakfast room was not barrier free therefore difficult to reach for slightly handicapped. I am not sure if this information is in the premises description. There was a kettle with two cups in the room, however, that was all - no tea/coffee bags. Anyway, we liked our stay as the staff are nice and friendly.

Photos are misleading. Disappointed.

The hotel was nothing like its photos. None of the rooms looked like what was shown and there was no kettle and cups. The floor looked dirty and I was bitten whilst I was sleeping. The toilet seat was broken and the shower temperature was very uncomfortable and unstable. The shower was also clogged, and the water from the drain soaked up to my feet. The bed sheets were clean, but there was no ventilation and it was often very humid and hot, which caused me to itch. The breakfast was just ok and it was very uncomfortable to move around as the seats and tables were very crowded.

I won't book this hotel anymore. It is not recommended for young children and is not value for money. The name of the hotel at the entrance was also dirty with cobweb on the top and nothing like the photos.

Friendly staff and great location. However, the bed was not comfortable due to the bad spring under it, I booked a double bed but they were 2 single beds in put next to each other with an unsafe gap in between. Hotel stated free parking but when I arrived I had to pay for parking. The lift does not reach to the 5th floor. The 5th floor was horrible at night as it gets very hot up there without air-conditioning meaning that we have to leave the window open and this brings all the bugs and flys. No fridge in room.

Disappointing spa and bar facilities

I was expecting a hotel with a spa. The hotel had one jacuzzi and a massage room. There's no bar to speak of, you can order a basic drink in the reception only. The breakfast choices are limited but palatable. Having said that, all the staff were very welcoming, the hotel is clean and comfortable and ideally located for a short stay.

The hotel was lovely. Everything was clean and the receptionists were so helpful. The receptionists themselves would make me stay here again just from how friendly and welcoming they were. The property itself was in great condition, but the area around the property wasn't ideal. There was a lot of construction around the hotel and they had a balcony that seemed like it was going through some type of renovations. Regardless, the stay was great and had a good price. I would definitely stay again.

The hotel was veey clean, we were staying in the quadraple room. The sarounding of the hotel is very nice as well, you can easily reach the hotel using any tran line. The staff were helpful for all our stay. The only negative point is the limited breakfast options but nevertheless it was eatable.

I can definitely not recommend this place

Don’t expect too much of the breakfast since the bread was really dry and the juice was nearly water without taste.

We booked the hotel because of wellness but it was really could so we left it 1h before expected (we booked paid for 2h)

The ventilation in the wellness room was really loud so it was not possible to hear the music and it was definitely not relaxed.

Then one of us have to get massage and we was waiting nearly 1h because they forget to turn on a machine that do the work - not a person!

At the room there was 3,5ml soap for a shower - 1 letter pr. person pr. stay - that means when you buy 1L shampoo you should have enough for 1,5 year

The curtain in the room and linens on the bed has been repaired instead of being changed.

Sorry to say it, but stay away from this place and if I should give it stars it is more terrible than those hotels that only have a half star.

항의해도 창문을 열려 벌레가 들어온 거는 자기네 탓이 아니라고 환불이나 아무것도 해줄 수 없다고 함.. 결국 바로 나옴.. 최악임..
You can stay with insects, mosquitoes, spyders, great experience. Real eco-friendly hotel. Window was kept open, summer time there are a lot of insects, and spyders doesn't have poison, that's ok to sleep. They gave insects killer spray and dead insects over my bed.
I really couldn't sleep in this conditions, so I requested to refund, but they said it's not their fault, that's why you didn't close the window.

Rooms that facing main street suffer from very close TRAM station. Very noisy even during night, which makes you to have closed windows. As we did not have AC, we had to use fan that was very loud even on lowest RPM.

Good location and a good experience

We were pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of this hotel. The family room was just right, and the breakfast was a great start to the day. Also a surprise was the free overnight parking directly in front of the hotel, where there is also a convenient tram stop. On the down side, was the tram running in front of the hotel through most of the night. Loud and shaking the hotel with each pass. The hotel needs an update. One of the other interesting aspects is the 24hr erotic shop just a few meters away. A bit of a contradiction for a hotel with a family option.

The hotel is in a great location, with a great breakfast and staff that seem to try to help.
BUT and this is a BIG BUT!!!!
Firstly they put us in a room with twin beds, contrary to our booking,
This took 2 days to change!
THE CHANGE!!!
We were put in a room that was SO TERRIBLE that we asked to move back, but were told they couldn't!!!
It was poorly maintained and the bed had springs up through the mattress.
When asked for an extra quilt, because the room was also a bit cold, we were told repeatedly that there were no more mattresses!
Eventually, after one night without sleep and a bad back, the receptionist brought us up two camping mattresses for the top of the bed.
NO more sheets though!!!
When we..and yes we had to do this ourselves...put the mattresses onto the very old mattress we noticed that not only was the mattress full of springs poking up everywhere, but it was also FILTHY!
Additionally, the sheets did not even fit the old mattress, never mind with the camping mattresses on top!
Overall, I would strongly urge people NOT TO STAY HERE!!! IT IS HELL!
Our Christmas 2018 was RUINED!

The hotel is out of town and you had to get a tram to get in. There is no bar at the hotel although the receptionist will serve drinks from their limited range. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms and no shower gel provided. The pillows in our room were wafer thin. You can use the pool table if it is not already booked but it slopes badly on one side. Beds were comfortable. .

Okay for a budget trip

We really didn't spend so much time in the hotel, so my overall experience was good. Rooms are a bit outdated, but bed is comfortable and just enough for what you need. Room was clean, but if I am manager of hotel I would spend money on updating bathroom. It smelled terribly, I think due to sewerage system.
Breakfast was okay, bread, toast, salami (not so good), some cereals, boiled eggs and little sausages. If they just improve quality of products it would mean a lot, but after four days you get very tired of toast.
I as well think how employee that works during breakfast should not wear crocs, a bit not coresponding to food and beverage standards.
I was not bothered by not having shelves, however my friends really missed it.
Really good side was that we were able to check in and get into the room a bit before 11am, really meant a lot since we travelled for 10hours. And I must mention how all staff is very polite and kind.

We had very good condition in hotel otakar it worth the money that you paid for it. A little far from tourist attractions but we used tram 6 for going and getting back into the hotel it takes only 12 min and you can buy 30 min tickets and its price is 24 Czech krona less than 1 euro. The best thing about this hotel is its employees they are very friendly.
All in all in comparison with price it can be good choice .

THIS IS THE WORST HOTEL

The hotel is located at least 4 kms from everything you need to see in Prague which makes it difficult to walk to the tourist spots bcz Prague is not a big city and almost everything can be covered on foot. The lift can only fit 2 people at a time with luggage. The rooms pics look different than the actual room, BUT WORST OF ALL IS THE HOTEL MANAGEMENT WHICH DIDN'T ALLOW ME TO CANCEL ONE MORE I HAD BOOKED. WE SAW THE CONDITION OF THE HOTEL AND WANTED TO MOVE OUT BUT THEY DIDN'T ALLOW TO CANCEL. THEY DID NOT REFUND US MONEY FOR ANOTHER ROOM WE HAD CANCELED AND NEITHER DID THEY GIVE ANY KING OF HOTEL COMPLEMENTARY SERVICES IN EXCHANGE FOR THE CANCELED ROOM. I had the worst time sleeping as their blankets are too small for a normal human being to fit in. Pick some other hotel, THIS IS THE WORST ONE.

nightmare dungeon in Prague

the worst hotel I have ever been to. we wanted to take a shower in the morning but the water was cold. in the afternoon when the water was fine we found out the tap water was broken. the receptionist was just sorry and not helpful she asked us to wait until the next day since their technician would come at 7 am. we insisted to change our room and finally they accepted. shortly after moving to the new room we noticed the handle of the bathroom door was broken and locked. again the receptionist said she was alone and didn't know what to do and they did not have any vacancy too. so we asked for a screw driver and fixed the door ourselves.beds in both rooms were so noisy we couldnt sleep peacefully. we also were not alone at room as we had lots of friendly ants friends which walked freely everywhere.the Wifi was terribly poor and useless. by the way we could hear every sound and noises people next door made. the parking lot was public and we had to leave the car miles away from the hotel.

This is not a 3 star hotel, it is a hostel!

This hotel should not be advertised as a three star hotel as it felt more like a hostel. We stayed there for two nights and our bedroom did not get cleaned during our stay. The hotel did not offer shampoo or a hair drier. The pillows I am sure were older than 10 years old. They adverstise that they have free parking, but is actually street parking that they are referring to. Breakfast is nothing special and it does not start until 8am, so if you want to get an early start you are out of luck. The fruit that they had on a bowl was all old and some of the apples were rotten. After breakfast they ask you to put your dishes away on the dirty dish table....I am surprised they didn't ask us to wash our dishes !!! Spend the extra money and stay at a nicer hotel.

The Otakar is a basic hotel. The tram stops are very convenient as it is a good walk into the centre.
The hotel was basic but very clean and worth the money. If you like to watch tv when you go to bed then you need other languages. The breakfast was good with a reasonable choice. Staff were helpful. Overall if you add the price to what you get you cannot complain.

Requested double bed nine months in advance. Got a tiny room worthy of a cruise line berth with two single beds. Many, many young people--reminded us of a hostel. Staff were very helpful. Tram transit to all the attractions was very convenient and nearby. We recommend the all-day tram ticket--only a bit more than two one-way tickets. Note: tram lines on front and side of hotel and rail lines behind. Moderate noise level.

The location of hotel is terrible if you come by plane. Extremely long and inconvenient way to hotel. I stayed before in Prague 9 which was much cheaper but it was more convenient to come from the airport because it was close to subway. The room is OK but the carpeting has huge stains as well as the arm chairs. The room was clean. There is no refrigerator or kettle or coffee maker. There is no office exchange in the neighbourhood either.
The staff could not advice me how to make TV working ( the TV cable for some strange reason was not connected and I had to play for more than one hour with the settings to make it work. The staff did not know how to go to the airport or where the stop of public transport.

Breakfast was OK although the previous hotel for which I paid only 27 euro had a better breakfast. The neighbourhood is good , you just walk around to see beautiful buildings but from one side it was terrible to walk because they have construction.
The Internet connection was terrible. It took me more than one hour to connect, after which it was disconnected in 10 minutes.

Reception was tiny that doubled up as the bar and snack bar. Requested upgrade and after two days trying to speak to manager to get upgrade with no success , checked out and found another hotel.

Budget hotel near the centre

We stayed for three nights. Hotel is well maintained and we enjoyed pretty decent comfort throughout our stay. Breakfast was fine, but the choice could have been a bit better (add hard boiled or scrambled eggs and some more fruits). Hotel was neat and our room was cleaned every day. There were meant to be free toiletries as per description on booking site, but this was interpreted as two tiny bars of hotel soap, so nothing like shampoo or shower gel. The worst thing about our stay was reliability of internet - we had to book a few flights, but the internet kept coming and going, so it was a real challenge (and it wasn't due to wifi signal - it was at its max). I'd say perhaps half of the time the wifi hotspots showed as 'not connected to the internet'. And perhaps one last advice I would give to the management - ban smoking in the hotel completely. Even if there are some designated areas in the hotel - it doesn't help and you can clearly smell tobacco smoke throughout the hotel. The hotel is situated on a busy road, so it can get pretty noisy, even at night due to trams running 24/7. But overall in spite of all described above, we felt it was a good value for the money we paid.

This hotel is right across the street from a street car stop, that's the best I can say about this hotel. Our room needed some major renovating and the bathroom smelled like mold. The room is very basic and scarce of furniture. Also, smoking is allowed in the lobby and being a nonsmoker I couldn't stand walking through the lobby. Also, our room smelled like smoke from someone smoking in another room, it was awful. The morning breakfast is extremely basic with very little to offer. I would bypass this hotel and keep looking for something newer and smoke free.

Hotel was clean the only staff we saw was the receptionist breakfast was buffet of cold meat and cheese with bread but most of the crockery was badly chipped not very hygenic cheap and cheerful

Clean Budget Hotel

We found the Hotel Otakar to be clean and pleasant. The staff were very helpful, and the rooms functional. Breakfast was good and the food fresh. A good stay, directly on a tram route into central Prague.

Neighborhood was quite noisy when the tram was pass by. The room was clean. Only take 10 minute tram to old town. The reception was helpful especially Nickol. I would stay this hotel again when we travelled Prague again.

It was a clean and tidy hotel 15 mins tram ride away from Praha centre. The receptionist spoke good English. Wifi was good in the room, The lift was ok but had a very slow opening door? Breakfast was from 8am so not great for an early departure. Trams leave from just outside the hotel. I did tram 24 to Masarykovo then tram 26 to Dejviva then airport bus 119, in about an hour, for 32kn.

The staff at Otakar offered an exemplary service and went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible (including preparing us a breakfast when we had to be at meetings before the allocated breakfast started at the hotel)! The hotel is good value for money if you are looking for a convenient, short, no frills stay in Prague. There are fantastic tram links to the centre of town and some decent places to grab dinner in the local area. Our only gripes were that the heating in our room wasn't working (and it got quite chilly of an evening), it could have used a luck of paint, and there were no complimentary shampoos/shower gels so bring your own. Other than that, we would recommend for value business trips.

Good way to experience Prague

This hotel is not centrally located but it is very close to two Tram stops from which you can get anywhere in the city very quickly and cheaply. The staff, everyone from the front desk to the maids, was very friendly and spoke English very well. The rooms were clean and, by European standards, spacious. The hotel building old enough to be considered quaint without being run-down in any way. The one and only issue would be having a street-facing room. If you need the window open (because rooms aren't air-conditioned) you get some noise from the street and tram stop. Overall, this was a good hotel.

For the price we paid we didn't expect anything better! Simple, cheap hotel! You get what you paid for - noting less, nothing more! But you are in Prague to admire the beauty of this magnificent city not to stay in the hotel room.
But an improvement on breakfast would be a big plus. The breakfast was really, really simple.....I am not a fussy person but this extra mile would brighten up the day, there is nothing better to start your day than a delicious breakfast.

I'd definitely stay in this hotel again.

I'd definitely stay in this hotel again. Great location- tram across the road (24) or around the corner (18) took us to the centre of town in 10 minutes. We also loved the very friendly and helpful staff. They really went out of their way to meet our needs- from late snacks (at a very reasonable cost) to hot water and directions. The room was very clean and had a great view, and good heating. Very adequate bathroom with a good shower. The hotel also provided a complete \"all you can eat\" breakfast..

Very large room but the outer window didn't seem to shut very well and there was a lot of noise from the tram and just random noises from plumbing etc in the hotel. The breakfast was basic but OK. Starting time for breakfast should begin earlier (currently 8am) and the towels should be changed daily.

Very comfortable and enjoyable place to stay

I was very pleasantly surprised when I arrived at this hotel, to see how nice it was compared to what I had paid for it. It is a real find. The decor is nice, my double room was spacious, the staff are incredibly friendly and went completely out of their way to help me with several things (to the point that one young man climbed inside the generator and figured out how to fix it to stop a noise that was bothering me). The hotel is quite a walk from the centre of the city but is right across from a tram stop (though I didn't use it). The breakfast is ok but not the best.

Great transport links

Simply furnished but comfortable and warm room. Reception sell food and refreshments. Great to find the tram stops just outside that goes into town, and another bus/tram stops around the corner. Shops and restaurants nearby. Helpful staff. Would stay again!

I really appreciated that all of the front desk clerks spoke english and were eager to help. One clerk in particular spoke very good english and was very helpful. Conveniently located a one minute walk to tram service which, combined with the rest of Pragues excellent transit service, made getting to points of interest fairly easy.
