The room was charming and very affordable during the peak tourist season. I had a lovely dinner at the rooftop restaurant (the salmon was excellent—the views were just as good!) Upon check-in, I advised the front desk that I needed to check out early due to a flight. Since I was missing the breakfast buffet, the hotel staff arranged that a sack breakfast be prepared for myself and my daughter. That was an unexpected and most welcome surprise. I’d stay here over and over.

This is a beautiful hotel right in the center of Old Riga (the Cathedral, which marks the effective center of the city, is next door). Great value for money. All of the key historical sites are within walking distance. The room was clean and had a unique style. The view from the rooftop restaurant is great. The breakfast is great. I have no complaints.

The ambience is from a time gone by, a time when charm & grace were highly valued. A delightful change from chrome. I would live to come back when I could stay longer. I do have one thought. I originally chose here because of the elevator; I have heavy luggage because I will be working in Europe for quite awhile. Unfortunately a person must lug their luggage up 12 steps to get to the elevator.

Thank you for amazing stay during Christmas time at Gutenbergs hotel.We were greeted by friendly and welcong receptionist Baiba who made sure we have a queen bed room instead of twin room, breakfast was nice in a nice room downstairs, location was great just stones throw from Doma laukums with all Christmas markets and ambience, recommend if you like to stay in the nicest part of Riga

Not quiet- there's activity until 1 am every night. It would have been nice to know that the floors are not level but slope down in this old building. The left side of my bed was 5-10 degrees higher than the right. I would slide down if i wasn't situated correctly.

This is a wonderful, beautiful, historic building. As a result. It is old even though updated. My room was beautiful, but the floor was very crooked! Getting to my bed was like walking up a hill. Also, there was not an elevator, so be prepared to go up some stairs (help with my luggage was offered!). Even so, i loved the vibe and the hotel was great!

As a consequence, we could hear every conversation of guests leaving the restaurant until the restaurant closed. Disappointing.

I stayed four nights. Had dinner one night in the rooftop restaurant. The hotel was very affordable. While there is an elevator, there are about 8 steps to reception and also down to the breakfast room. So I would not call this property accessible. I made a rookie mistake and gave the front desk a bag of laundry - maybe half a load in a US washer. $80! I found this to be outrageous. My fault for not checking. Lev at the front desk is very nice and helpful. I was still recovering from laundry sticker shock and forgot to tip him as I left. The cathedral is right by the hotel which is why I selected it. Lots of restaurants about but not many shops. There is a rimi express mini mart close by

Lovely hotel with fabulous service. The receptionist was particularly service-focussed. High ceilings made the room feel very spacious and triple glazing cut out the noise 100%. Great location in the heart of the old town. Breakfast was delicious with a good variety.

I would definitely stay here again. The service was completely outstanding. I felt like a made a lifetime friend with Levs. At first he seemed too good to be sincere but I learned he was absolutely top notch and went beyond any service I had encountered before. (I am an old woman so there was no reason he was doing this except being caring and excellent.)
He directed me to great non-tourist happenings, looked out for a cancellation of dinner reservations at the rooftop restaurant that was otherwise always fully booked, and researched the background for something that was a concern to me.

Our stay at this property was really enjoyable. The concierge was 24/7 (I believe this is a summer thing and it is 8am-10pm otherwise - still quite good) and it was extremely convenient to come and go. Breakfast service from 8am-11am had a great selection, and being open for 3 hours gave us a ton of flexibility. We really liked this location right off one of the big squares, but a couple blocks over from the main tourist action (so much quieter than that side I imagine). Turning away from the square provided a quick shortcut to the riverside that made getting to public transportation super easy. Levs at the concierge was amazing. His personal touch was great - he knew who we were, greeted us every time we came, had lots of good stories about things going on locally, and just made us feel very welcome. There is a reason half these reviews mention him!

The service was extremely nice. The young man at the front desk was intimidating with his kindness and willingness to help. The food at breakfast was very good and varied, there were some queues for the coffee machine but I had time. Although the rooms were cleaned every day, our room must have been unused for a long time because there was a layer of dust everywhere. However, the Art Nouveau interior design compensated for this slight inconvenience. The location in the very center of old Riga was also a great convenience. I recommend it to everyone who can turn a blind eye to dust. M

Gutenbergs Hotel is perfectly located to explore the city of Riga. The hotel has a wonderful old world feeling about it. However what really sets it apart from other hotels is the friendliness and efficiency of it’s staff. We were made to feel most welcome by all staff, in particular by the young man who was working reception on Saturday 3rd December. He was extremely professional. Breakfast was plentiful and excellent quality. Gutenbergs provided exceptional value for money. We will be back.

Our stay was mixed with the restaurant waiter rude and the breakfast for three days being cold due to the warming trays not being switched on. Cold meats and cakes were limited and not refreshed. Had it been near breakfast closing I would understand. Room was not cleaned and cups left by room service. The main reason that made our stay pleasant was due to Leif on reception. A very knowledgeable person having been teacher and archaeologist. Nothing was not to much trouble to make our stay very memorable. An asset to the hotel.

Everything was great: the location is right near the cathedral, the rooms were clean, comfortable, and a lot more spacious than we expected, the breakfast was delicious, and the rooftop restaurant even more so, and the service was very friendly (special thanks to Levs for telling us everything about the medieval churches). Definitely going to stay there again the next time I am in Riga.

A gentle 10 min stroll from the main stop of the hop on and off bus stop service. 100 m away from the Dome square Xmas market. could not ask for a better location. Great location. Fabulous breakfast. Given a drink ticket for rooftop. Staff at bar/restaurant were very unfriendly and refused to allow you in the outdoor rooftop dining area to enjoy your complimentary drink. Took 10 min to even get someone’s attention to order a dessert which completely irritated the server. I watched as others came with their tickets for drinks and treated as rudely as we were and told “no outside viewers” so with no place to sit they got back on the elevator.

A very warm welcome at the reception. Hotel is very centrally located. Breakfast served is something to look forward to especially with the quality of the food served . The only area we felt needed immediate attention is the beddings - mattress is really too soft and the bed covers and quilts looked so worn out and awful.

We had a quirky room in the old part of the hotel with a sloping floor and large wooden beams. The decor was rather tired although the bed (two singles pushed together with a mattress topper linking them) was comfortable. The free standing air conditioning unit did not work, except on fan mode and the flexible hose connection to the outside disconnected several times. The green stained pine furniture was very 80s. The bathroom had a powerful shower unit over the bath but, again, the room was dated and had cracked floor tiles. There were cobwebs along the ceiling near the window in the main room and the carpet felt a bit sticky underfoot.
On the plus side, the location was very convenient for the old town bars and restaurants. It was also close to the river; convenient for our running. We also had an excellent meal in the rooftop restaurant.
The reception staff were generally very friendly and extremely helpful in offering to print out bus and train timetables for our several excursions further afield.
The hotel seemed pretty busy during our 5 night stay. We would stay here again, though it would be nice to see the older rooms refurbished. A sign near the lobby says that the hotel was refurbished in 2015, but I find it hard to believe that any changes to the decor had occurred in our room since the 1980s.
