Warm, cozy, welcoming room in a traditional Japanese house. We appreciated Katsutaro san’s hospitality. Coin washer and dryer onsite. Walking distance to Yanaka Ginza shopping street and Nippori or Ueno station. Recommend.

I had a wonderful stay. The location is wonderful for museum-goers and is located right next to beautiful Ueno Park, which has many events and museums within its bounds as well as a lovely lake of lotus flowers. The room was comfortable and very clean, it also had air conditioning in the room, which was great to be able to use on some warm August nights. I was also able to walk to Akihabara for nightlife. My host and hostess were also very kind and attentive throughout my stay. Many deliscous restaurants are also very close by.

Great place! The owners helped us out immediately and always greeted us as we entered. There's a computer in the lounge that's great for printing out flight tickets, and the rooms are super comfy and are cleaned daily for us. The location is nice- it's an 15-18 minute walk to Ueno Station, which is ok, and the path takes you right through the beautiful Ueno Park.

Ryokan close to Tokyo Ueno

The Ryokan is close to the bustling Tokyo Ueno, like a 15 minute walk, but is located in a quiet neighborhood. One of the best nights we had real good sleep. The stairway to guest rooms is steep and narrow, hence will be a challenge with bulky luggage. Also the price was a little high, unsure if it was because of peak holiday season.

Lovely location right behind the park. I’d go back any time. Futons are relatively thick and much better than in other ryokans I experienced. Can be a bit noisy if you are unlucky and there is a group of tourists staying there at the same time.

Quiet location close to Ueno rail link to narita airport. Use video on hotel website to walk easy 15 mins. Simple comfortable accommodation to experience Japan. No breakfast but nice patisserie and coffee at station.

Great traditional style inn!

The area was a little difficult to get to with heavy luggage and the reception area was surprisingly small. However, the hosts were very friendly and the lodging was much more ample than what we had anticipated. We got a room that was one of the larger ones that could possibly fit 5 to 6 full/queen sized futons, so we were very comfortable. Bathroom was a nice size as well compared to other places in this price range or lower. Was a great stay for the first night of our honeymoon!

Great little ryokan with a fabulous location

This ryokan is in a perfect location in a residential area adjacent to Ueno Park. It's around a 10-mintute walk from Ueno Station, from where it is easy to get almost anywhere. The owner of the ryokan is really lovely and helpful. I really wanted to go to the tuna auction at Tsukiji, and based on what I had read, thought I could get there by 4:00 am to get a place; he said that I should leave by 3:00; thankfully I did - by 4:00 it was truly full!

My room was of good size and very comfortable. It was a little cold, but there was a gas heater which warmed the room nicely. The down comforter on the traditional bed was really nice. And everything was very very clean.

My only complaint is that the rooms are quite noisy - the walls are thin, so you can hear everything happening in the hallway. This is, however, to be expected, as it is a traditional Japanese residence and not a hotel. Not a big inconvenience.

OK for just one night.

The room was large but cold and drafty. The small heater in the living room could not be moved further than 1 meter and was inefficient at heating both rooms. The heater also needed to be restarted every hour or so which meant we didnt get much sleep. Bed was comfortable and the room had the bathroom ensuite. WiFi in the room but not free portable WiFi. Location was ok once we figured out the shortest straightest route to get 3 luggage to the train station. They have flexible left luggage service which is great.

SO nice, great price for hard-to-find family room!

For our first trip to Tokyo, we lucked into a wonderful Ryokan! Prices in the city are so high, and this was very reasonably priced. This isn't a fancy high-rise hotel, but it's extremely well-maintained and serviced. Comfortable beds on tatami mats, very private room. Also a lovely private bathroom, much appreciated in the very hot month of August. Great walks to nearby Ueno Park (like Cenral Park in NYC), with the added bonus of little Yanako town next door. Yanako is a sweet, old-style village with lovely little restaurants and a beautiful serene little cemetery we wandered through.

Basic, quiet, good location

Basic accomodation. Clean. Stairs are narrow and steep (expected at a Ryokan) so do not plan on large/heavy luggage or small children who may find stairs irresistable.
Not many features but coffee and tea are available in the (small) entrance room.
Some brochures are also available. A bus stop is nearby: the Bus is convenient for exploring the area, going to Ueno station and reaching ASAKUSA. The Riokan is anyway at walking distance from the Ueno JR Station (15 minutes) - can be partially through the park.
At walking distance there is the Hotel Graphy where you can have a nice breakfast in the morning with a good coffee.

Nice Ryokan but not what the usual stay.

For all of those who feel the need for a Ryokan this had the traditional feel that its one. Didnt have the meal options but had the largest room I stayed in Japan. It was like camping. Very quiet but hosts spoke almost no English. I didnt think worth the stay but glad got off the bucket list.

I had a very spacious room, but had to use the toilet and shower in the hallway. Which was not bad, because there were not many other guests. In fact, the shower was so clean and spacious, that I much prefer this to small cramped private facilities I had at other hotels.

Cozy family-run ryokan

Everything was great at Katsutaro. Very friendly and helpful staff which I regard as the most important stuff for a hotel. I left my baggage before check-in and after check-out hassle-free. Room is spacious clean given one-man stay. Shared bathroom on the 2nd floor, not a concern for single traveler.

The hotel is 5-min walk from Nezu station and 15-min walk from Ueno, which I found convenient enough. The walk to Ueno is safe even at night, and that is some sort of experience. Given the price and the service, I definitely will stay at Katautaro again.

Nice ryokan

Lovely ryokan experience with pretty spacious rooms. They provide yukatas, which was fun to try on. I stayed in the room for two with a private bath, which was convenient. They provide a communal fridge and microwave, and have coffee/tea/water at the front. Friendly staff, but the nice old lady that checked us in only knew a few English phrases (we somehow managed to understand each other though), I think the man knows more English. They have plenty of English brochures and maps of the area for you to use.

Things to note:
The walls are a bit thin, you can hear the people outside talking if you're quiet in the room.
There's a flight of steep stairs up to the room, so make sure you can pull your luggage up.
The doorways to the rooms are low - if you're over 5'5\" or so, you'll have to dip your head to get in. I'm short so the height was perfect.

Excellent Ryokan in a great neighborhood. 5 min walk to beautiful and cultural Ueno Park. Staff was kind, polite, and very helpful. The room was spacious, clean, and as advertised with tatami mats. This is a great way to have an authentic experience in Japan. I would stay here again and would recommend it to everyone. It is small, cozy, and quiet. Very different than the large, corporate hotel chains. I can't say enough good things about this place. The owners provided gifts upon arrival and departure and really gave the personal touch. They were very accommodating by watching the luggage because I had a late flight. Excellent service. Excellent hotel.

This ryokan was quite nice. It's very close to Ueno Park and the Chiyoda subway line. If you come in from Narita airport, it`s a little challenging to get to. (Keisei Main Line) We went through the park, but it's a lot of stairs.
The ryokan was clean and the owner was very nice.

Overall the stay was very nice. The hotel is a bit small but for Tokyo it was a good deal. The place was clean. The hotel is in a quiet area about 10 minutes walk from the Ueno station. The lady at the front desk only speaks Japanese. It wasn't an issue but it would have been nice for someone to speak English to guide us around the area. There was a mini fridge in a common area but there was no microwave. They also supplied tea and coffee in the common area but we had to ask for them to refill it multiple times. The japanese style mats for sleeping were comfortable.

Room was spacious, futon bed on floor, cold a/c room unit, window opened to street side, free wi-fi. Double room had two large futons which were very comfortable & floor table, hot water pot & tea packets. Convenience store across street always seemed open. Single shower with changing room could be locked. Toilet at end of hall with a hand rinse at top of tank was different. Stairs are narrow and steep (expected at a Ryokan) so do not plan on large/heavy luggage or small children who may find stairs irresistable. There is a small shared fridge and sink. Washer/dryer combo available - minimal cost, laundry soap provided. As it is 5-15 min walking to Ueno activities (Zoo, Park, Shrine, JR Ueno station, Ameyokocho shopping section) there are also occasional taxi passing.

If you are looking to 'live' like a Japanese, Ryokan Katsutaro is the place for you. It is furnished like a typical Japanese home with futons for beds and tatami flooring. It was very comfortable and cosy which makes it good for families. It is located about 15mins walk away from the very well connected Ueno station.

Beautiful ryokan in a great location!

This ryokan was a great find! It was clean and had a lot of room in the room we were staying in. The futon was super soft and comfortable and there was air con and heating. The staff were super helpful and friendly!

The ryokan is located between two stations and is very close to the Ueno zoo, a temple and a giant street full of shops is only a 3 minute walk away! Yet it was quiet and very homely! Only one stop away from akihabara! This hotel was a great place to stay while exploring tokyo and I would gladly stay there again and again.

If you are going to Tokyo and want a very reasonably priced ryokan that is clean with a lot of room plus the traditional Japanese feel this ryokan is perfect!

Cozy clean ta ta mi while the sink in the bathroom isn't working well. Served by a nice old lady who is the owner although only speaks Japanese. Closed to the bus stop 18 and Nezu metro station in Chiyoda line. There is a short cut to the station opposite the bus stop. Around 700 Yen by taxi from Keisei Ueno Station where you can catch the sky liner to NRT airport. All in all then, it is a nice place to stay within the budget.

Traditional Japanese place to stay

The hotel was fine. The only two issues I would say included stairs only from entrance level to the first floor. These were very steep and made carrying luggage challenging. While the Ryokan was physically convenient to the train station, it was not easy to find even on returning to the hotel. The mattresses were comfortable. The room was clear. Bath was clean and adequate.

숙박비가 저렴하며 조용하게 잘 쉬다왔습니다. 저는 침실 외엔 모두 공동사용인 호실을 이용했는데 별다른 불편함은 없었습니다. 다만, 계단이 가파르고 좁아서 여성분들은 캐리어들고 이동하기 힘들수 있으니 관리인분에게 도움을 요청하시는게 좋을듯합니다. 약간 외진 곳이지만 우에노역 도보 10분, 네즈역 도보 5분, 닛포리역 도보 15분으로 역까지 접근성은 좋은 편입니다. 나리타공항에서 우에노역까지 스카이라이너를 이용하면 빠르고 편하게 이동할수 있습니다. 시설이 좋은 편은 아니지만 숙박비를 고려한다면 이곳만한 곳도 없을듯합니다.

昭和的なレトロある室内だけれども、清潔感あり、根津駅にも近く、上野公園にもそんなに歩く事なく観光には便利でした。旅館の側にコンビニはありませんでしたが、酒屋があり朝７時から11時までオープンしていて、コンビニとほほ変わらない品揃えです。根津駅周辺にはコンビニは多かったです。
スタッフの方々もとても良く満足でした。

우에노 지하철 역에서 걸어서 가기엔 좀 멀지만, 가는 길 주변이 참 호젓해서 좋았습니다. 단정한 주택가와 우에노 동물원을 거쳐 익숙한 옛 동네를 거니는 듯한 정취가 매우 좋았습니다. 친절한 주인장과 깨끗하고 단정한 다다미 방은 도쿄 첫날 밤을 매우 인상적으로 만들어 주었습니다. 전통 일본 주택에서 1박을 기대하신다면 주변 정취와 함께 좋은 경험이 될 수 있겠습니다.

The staff are nice and helpful! There was no problems in communicating in simple English.

There was no toilet for the room that I picked, so I had to use the shared toilet and shower-room. Both facilitates are clean, but I sometimes needed to queue in pick hours. The rooms are not well sound-proofed, so I could hear noises probably when the occupants next door were talking/ watching TV.

It took around 20 min to get to Ueno station 上野, and the staff introduced us to take a bus instead of walking out to the station. The hotel is actually located quite near to Nezu station 根津, and it took around 10 min to walk there. Of cuz, Nezu is not as convenient as Ueno, but we purchased metro pass, so it was quite OK for us.

The convenient store located right opposite to the hotel closed at 10pm.

우에노 역에서 걸어서 10-15분정도 걸립니다. 개인욕실이 있는 방이 있고, 공용욕실이 있는 방이 있는데.. 전반적으로 객실이 몇개 안되어서 공용욕실 및 화장실도 그렇게 불편하지 않았습니다. 담배냄새 안나고 청결하고 넓어서 가족여행으로는 매우 만족스러웠습니다.

우리 여행의 실패 숙소

마을 안에 위치해 있어 걸어가는 길이 나쁘진 않았지만
아이와 짐이 많다면 별로...
일반 2층주택 개조.
다다미 방, 방 안에 욕실 화장실 있음
가격대비 별로 추천하고 싶지 않음
시설이 1박 4인 22,511엔 (약 230,000원)에 맞지 않음
다음엔 우에노역 주변 호텔을 이용할 것임

깔끔하고 좋았습니다.

우에노 공원에서 걸어가기에는 좀 멀다라는 감이
있지만 위치는 제법 좋았아요. 대신
한 가지 주인아저씨께서 알려주셨던 정보를 드리자면
호텔에서 가까운곳에 18번 버스 정류장이 있습니다.
그 버스타면 우에노까지 편하게 갈수있어요.
체크인할때도 주인 아저씨께서 친절하게 대해주셔서 좋았고, 방도 넓어서 같이 간 사촌동생들과 편안하고 안락하게
수면을 취했어요. 일본의 일반 가정집이라 생각하고
생각하시면 편하실듯 합니다.

舊舊的但有親和力的好地方

廁所跟浴室都是公用的，不過整體很整潔。房間有點老舊，但是有暖氣也有小的電視，很像借住在日本人家裡，是很有趣的體驗。店主都是老人家，英文卻很好，也會很熱心介紹附近的景點跟交通方式，讓人感受到滿滿溫暖。

우에노 역에서 걸어가기에 조금 멀었으나 아이와 같이 생활하기에 방을 넓게 쓸수 있어서 좋았어요.
날씨가 쌀쌀해서 인지 웃풍이 심했지만 이불이 따뜻해서 지낼만 했습니다.

和父母一共三人住了四天三晚，整體感覺不錯。很日式風格、老闆也很友善、洗手間也很整潔。值得一讚的是屋主每天都會替我們換床鋪，惟房間設施有點破舊，看得出來已經很久沒翻新了。唯一感到不滿的是，我們住到第三晚時，三人均不約而同發現兩隻大腿後側的皮膚長了一大片點狀紅疹，懷疑是不太衛生的榻榻米所致。太恐怖了，以後也不會再住。

Vi var där i tre dagar. Stort rum med tatamimattor och bädd på golvet. Bra AC och WiFi. Bra gemensam WC, dusch och tvättmaskin. Slitet men charmigt i övrigt.

在安静的街区里面，主人推荐的餐馆味道好，价钱便宜，还有折扣。要体验日式生活的话住这里非常好，但要购物的话就要行远点了。

房間很日式很舒適，每天都會清理，所以很乾淨，旅館老闆人很好，詢問問題都會有耐心的一一回答我們，也會教我們如何搭車，讓我們省掉不少麻煩
唯一缺點是旅館離車站有點小距離，但是有公車可以搭所以不成問題

Very nice traditional japanese Ryokan， we had four nights there and it was a wonderful experience. The beds are very comfortable. Room is clean and location is close to Ueno, a quiet neighbourhood. If given the chance will come back in the future.

輕鬆寫意的旅遊

車站離住屋以有提行李箱的家庭，步行是有點難度，但周圍的上野動物園跟上野公園及科博館還有文藝展區，鄰近學校是我們比較喜歡的環境，這次旅遊家庭自助，行程定點，除搭JR車站稍遠點，其他都方便。喜歡日式的住房，所以選擇這邊四人家庭房。每天有房務整理，是選擇有私人衛浴的房型，只有樓梯較窄且陡，小孩走路要小心，旅館主人很親切，是滿值得住的日式小屋。之前比較過多家住宿，發現在東京寸土寸金的狀況，旅館房型其實不會很大，如果要住大點的房型，是建議往郊區或是有網友住過特別推薦的旅館，才會比較真實。

住起來很舒服，就是交通有點不便

三個人住一間，擺三個行李箱空間也很夠用，床鋪睡起來很舒服，開暖氣房間內很溫暖，周邊是住宅區很安靜，房東一家人就住在一樓，非常很熱心，還幫我們把行李搬到二樓房間，每天都有整理床鋪更換新的毛巾。缺點是離車站太遠，要走很長一段路，拖著行李箱走或是下雨要回到旅館蠻辛苦，隔音設備不好，隔壁房間的聲音都聽得很清楚，晚上要睡覺有點擾人。
