Great food at both breakfast and evening meal, friendly staff, great views & recently decorated.
However staff on the phone weren’t very helpful when I accidentally booked the wrong rate, and it took quite a while to amend despite ringing up immediately. We were also staying in room 2, which was lovely but a lot smaller than the photos and was a bit small for 2 adults. Coffee’s were also charged extra at breakfast which wasn’t made clear.

The room was lovely, and the hotel’s setting is beautiful. Breakfast in the morning was excellent and a real highlight of our stay.
However, our arrival experience was a little underwhelming. When we asked at reception about local walks, the lady on duty explained she wasn’t local and didn’t know of any nearby routes. (It’s surprising for a hotel in the Lake District not to be able to offer such advice.) Fortunately, a helpful member of the bar team stepped in and gave us some great suggestions, allowing us to plan our day.
Later, after being delayed in Keswick due to a lack of available taxis, we returned to the hotel at 8.30 pm. Unfortunately, we were told that no food could be served at this time—not even a dessert—which was disappointing after a long day.
Overall, the hotel itself is charming and well-presented, but it feels noticeably understaffed, and that really impacts the overall guest experience.

The property is very nice, quiet surroundings and the perfect view you will expect from a hotel this price. The food is above expectation with a totally different menu 2 nights of stay. A final point that the staff are amazing particularly April and Poppy, fantastic waitresses who care for their guests dinner, stay and well being.

Fabulous refurbished hotel, very modern but in a traditional way given its location. We had a garden suite (Millican Dalton) which was an absolute delight, very spacious and quiet, views over fields & hills. The only fault, although minor was there is no fridge in the room and there is a patio area with table & chairs with view to the hills but it hadn’t been cleaned for sometime, lots of moss & quite slippy.
We had dinner in the restaurant both nights & the food quality was very good & presented beautifully. Great breakfast menu.

The plus point for us is that they only have a couple of rooms for dogs & dogs are not allowed in the bar or restaurant.
Don’t get me wrong, I like dogs, but I don’t want to stay in a room where they have been & I certainly don’t want to eat in a restaurant with them when most guests are dressed for dinner & unfortunately have seen dogs jump up at staff when they are trying to serve food.

The Borrowdale Gates is a total gem. It exceeded our expectations. The staff are professional and accommodating. The breakfasts were great and we dined in all 4 nights - a first for us - largely because the cuisine and attention to detail was superb. AND the view from the dining room was breathtaking.

Been going to the Lakes for over 20 years and we thought we had stayed at some great hotels until we stayed here. After a couple of hard years where customer service had gone down the pan, this experience was incredible. Brilliant food, excellent service and beautifully decorated. Hotel was lovely. We booked a delux room with a king size bed and garden view. Although we were assured it was a king size bed we thought it was a double. But it was comfortable. And our view was of the car park. Overall a perfect location and staff very polite.

Great couple of days at the hotel, room good size and bathroom too. Great views from the room /Hotel. Food very nice and service excellent. Bus to/from Keswick stops outside hotel. Lots of walks from the hotel. Had superb weather which always makes the stay a winner too but a nice place to stay whatever the weather.

Good hotel with great views of the crags.Situated just on the edge of the village of Grange about 5 miles from Keswick.
Some nice walks with an easy 40 minute walk to Lodore Falls. Regular bus service to the bridge at the entrance to Grange if you don’t want to walk back.
The staff were excellent and couldn’t have been more helpful.
The only negatives were the room not being serviced between days however the guy cleaning the vacant next door room freely offered to do ours when requested for fresh tea and milk supplies which earned him brownie points. Additionally the kitchen seems to struggle on Saturday night and Sunday morning. We didn’t order a starter on Saturday which seemed to upset the system. After prompting following a 30 minute wait bread and an amuse bouche arrived but our meal took 50 minutes to appear. On Sunday morning the neighbouring table were still waiting for coffees when we left despite having eaten their starter off the buffet and the arrival of their cooked breakfasts.
However would I choose this hotel again? Yes I would. You certainly won’t get a better group of staff wherever you stay

A really great hotel in a wonderful location. Very friendly, welcoming and efficient staff. The room was clean and comfortable, and they very kindly gave us a free upgrade to a room with a balcony. The view in the morning was gorgeous.
The food is amazing and they have very good and carefully chosen wine list, which is not that common in small rural hotels these days.

Arrived with a wonderfully warm welcome and the excellent customer service continued throughout our whole 3 night stay! We only planned to dine in the restaurant once however the food was so delicious we decided to dine in twice...compliments to the Chef! We loved how all the dining tables faced out to the panoramic window showcasing a spectacular view of the farms and mountains around us. Our room was very clean and comfortable with great views also. As an ex hotelier in a renowned 5 red star property I was incredibly impressed with this hotel and would highly recommend it!

The staff at this hotel were very friendly and accommodating. The rooms were large by English/European standards, the views were beautiful, and the hotel was very quiet.
We ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel and both were fantastic. The dinner was delicious; however, the portions made a dinner in a French restaurant look like an all you can eat buffet. The dining room was also a tad quiet.
The main road to the bridge is narrow and then a one lane road from the bridge to get to the hotel. Not uncommon in the countryside; however, these roads were narrower than what you will find around the Southern Lake District towns.
Overall, it was a great hotel and a relaxing experience. We would definitely stay again and recommend this hotel to others!
