The Macdonald Houstoun House is actually three houses in one: the towerhouse complemented by an elegant country manor and charming steading. This characterful combination ensures that most rooms boast wonderful views across the hotel's gardens or beyond to the Ecclesmachan Hills.

Built in the early 17th century by John Shairp, the old tower of Houstoun remained the Shairp family home for 350 years. Vaulted ceilings and open fires combine with traditional Scottish hospitality to create an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming but is still distinctly refined and discreet.

All 71 guest rooms are tastefully furnished and well equipped, coming as standard with full en suite facilities, satellite television, direct dial telephone, modem point, hairdryer, iron and board, trouser press, complimentary mineral water, working area with desk and a shoe shine service. An extensive wine list, together with skilful presentation of dishes and fresh local produce, have made Houstoun one of the most outstanding restaurants in Scotland's central belt.

The award winning fine dining restaurant is situated on the first floor in the historic 16th century tower. Alternatively, the Leisure Club Bistro offers more informal fare and surroundings.

Leisure facilities at the Vital Leisure Club include an 18 metre swimming pool, sauna, sun shower, steam room, gymnasium, aerobics studio, beauty salon, tennis court, and golf course. These facilities are free for guest usage.

We had a lovely big room which with sperate beds for the kids which they loved. The pool was a real highlight, nice size and lovely and warm for the kids. Really enjoyed the breakfast too.

We stayed 2 nights with our 2 kids and it was amazing. Kids loved their stay and spacious bedroom. The staff couldnt do enough and were very accomdating. Breakfast was excellent. Parking spacious. Would definitely return when visiting this area again. Also dog friendly.

Quaint setting in the countryside with lovely gardens. Pub is charming with a good selection of beers and wine. Our room had good amenities including Nespresso coffee maker, kettle and selection of teas and coffee. Bathrooms are updated.

Sadly the hotel was not worth how much we paid. The room was cold, storage heaters meant the heating only came on when you put the card in the slot. We go moved no problem but we paid for a premium room and sadly it wasn’t that.
Staff were helpful and dinner in the restaurant was lovely.
Breakfast was disappointing being served brown avocado on toast.
Breakfast not worth the extra money.

Avoid, hotel stinks and is run down.

All rooms in this hotel have one category: twin, rundown and stinky. We booked a double bed for a higher rate and on arrival were given a twin room. They did not offer to move us to our category or even join the beds, since that's all they offer. Following a claim they also refuse to refund the difference.
The smell of mold in this place is borderline hazardous. The fire alarm went off twice in the early morning, with no rush to investigate as it seemed like a common occurrence to staff. There were several broken fixtures, including the handle for our window. Breakfast was standard, but slow.

Great Stay

Stayed one night as a family before heading to airport. Rooms a little tired but clean and very spacious. Comfortable beds and quiet. There was an event on when we stayed and when we walked to our room I was very worried we'd hear it in our room but heard absolutely nothing. Staff were exceptional and great with the children. Swimming pool which was great too. We would definitely stay again.

Great option for early flights

Hotel is lovely. Large room. Free parking. Restaurant on site. Perfect for an overnight before an early flight out of Edinburgh Airport. It is less than 7 miles away.

Nice building and setting but needs investment

Lovely tower house, nice setting and convenient location. I stay with work but the usual problems with Macdonald hotels - lack of investment, the place is quite run down. This time my room was also not very clean, floor was filthy - even found a pair of tweezers which were in the middle of the floor and looked to have been there a while! Staff are always helpful and doing their best.

Anniversary stay

at check in it was ok receptionist was friendly & polite, Had to walk outside to the annex for our room in which i was not aware when booked. Bar for drinks is very expensive and bar maid kept disappearing, Strong smell of cannabis at reception & bar area in the evening which was not very nice and staff were not interested. Restaurant was like a morgue food was not nice very over priced waited a long time for food to arrive, staff were not helpful had to keep asking .Breakfast was disappointing again had to keep asking, When checking out did not get asked if our stay was ok. Overall the hotel is very tired and NO i would not come back again

Disappointing stay

Very disappointed to say this is Supposed to be a 4 star hotel. The \"spa\" facilities are very poor, no whirlpool/jacuzzi, steam room was out of order and sauna was packed full of gym lads. Changing rooms were also crowded and unclean.

We had no towels on arrival and had to ask 4 times! At reception before finally getting some.
Bathroom was not cleaned at all during our stay, would have been nice for cleaners to at least give the sink and toilet a quick clean.

Charming, quaint outside of the hustle and bustle

The ladies at the front desk were wonderful. Everyone was exceptionally kind, and the food was outstanding. The service in the restaurant was excellent as well. I highly recommend the haddock.

Meh…

We stayed as a mum and daughter in room 73, which was a king room. Room was very spacious, and if you like a super soft bed then you’d love it, however the bed was far too soft for me. Small window, but at the end of the day I’m not in the room to stay all day, we were out and about anyway so didn’t bother us. Decent shower with ok pressure, liked it has Elemis products in the bathroom. Walls are pretty thin, could hear a lot through the walls, including people using hair dryers at 11 at night. We decided to eat in the bar for dinner and ordered a Caesar salad, pepperoni pizza and Mac and cheese side, was tasty. Breakfast was a bit of a let down, the bacon roll was decent but the continental was a bit rubbish. The pastries were hard and not fresh, same with muffins. Water was tepid at best.
The pool was the highlight, nice size and half was blocked for one swimming, with the other for families. Area was nice and clean, although shower was low pressure so ended up going back to the room for a shower. Didn’t use the sauna or steam room but they looked good.

Overall the place is nice but run down, with nice staff. The photos have been taken very cleverly as none of the property looks that new or fresh! Probably wouldn’t go back

A poor hotel and overpriced!!

Room was in serious need of renovation. Overall it didn’t feel like value for money. I ate in the bar and was charged £18.25 for a large glass of wine - what a rip-off!! Gym was also in need of renovation.

Terrible ….

Hotel needs a good refurb, my room had rotten bath panels, woodwork was dirty. Radiators loose and falling off the wall. Toilet paper holder falling off the wall, bathroom Sink was cracked , radiator valve taped on .

Not suitable for families. On both nights of our stay, close to our room they had wedding parties. Very loud music with DJs shouting until almost midnight. Defeated the whole point of the hotel as a place to rest after a day in Edinburgh. Room was dated with small sofa bed. Swimming pool was nice and staff there were pleasant. Management were not interested in our complaint about loud music.

We had a great stay at this hotel. The design is really unique and stylish, a mix of different building types set in a beautiful garden. It’s also conveniently close to the airport, which made our travel much easier. The breakfast was excellent with a great variety of options, and the service overall was very pleasant. But what truly was amazing was the kindness of the staff. My daughter accidentally left behind her small plush puppy dog, which is very special to her and to us. The hotel not only found it, but mailed it back to us. A huge thank you to Chloe, who went out of her way to help, we’re so grateful! Highly recommend this place!

The whole property needs cleaning, renovating, refurbishing. The paint peels off the outside wallls, the windows need renovating, the bathroom had mould in msby places, the carpet in the corridors is worn. We were on the second floor and nobody offered help to carry luggage. The restaurant was advertised as gaving scottish food with a midern twist, but it was standard pub food, 50% indian dishes.

Being our first time in Scotland, I booked this hotel based on the authenticity and heritage of the site and building. The grounds are beautiful! I have nothing to say about it My disappointment was really for some of the service and amenities aspects and the condition of the rooms. I recommend adding a small fridge and coffee/espresso machine in the rooms and easier access to ice etc...The rooms could be renovated as they were worn out. Other than that I enjoyed the stay.

Quick stay near airport

Was close to the airport and convenient. Our room did not look like the photos in the ad and was shabby. Toilet didn’t really flush. The walls seemed thin and we could hear people arguing in the hall and in neighboring rooms. The bar was cozy and the food was decent.

Pool and sauna etc all great. Staff are nice enough, service can be a bit slow. Food wasn’t great. Burger was average and expensive. Children’s mini pizza wouldn’t be eaten by majority of kids, including mine - strong Gruyère cheese (or similar) with a base of sundried tomato - too salty and too strong a flavour for kids. Breakfast was the biggest disappointment - porridge was like soup with lumps, couldn’t eat it. Pale sausages with no colour, I was worried they weren’t cooked, scrambled egg was also inedible. So much of a stay in a hotel is about the food, so it was a let down.

This was an amazing hotel to stay at. First time in Edinburgh, this hotel had great history and beautiful grounds. The staff on reception were very helpful especially Chloe who went out of her way to upgrade our rooms & chat to us too! Also really enjoyed the leisure facilities. Didn’t want to leave! Our beds were very comfy- I will be back!

Beautiful property friendly staff 30 minutes from Edinburgh drive. No ac, can open window nice enough in summer. No elevator- carry luggage up 3 flights of stairs. - probably the main negative
Dated needs renovation but clean- does have a nice enough tub to enjoy a bath.
TV does offer Netflix etc
Restaurant/bar is very cozy wine cellar vibe but not much available service wise only one staff between restaurant upstairs and bar downstairs at night.
The grounds a pretty - gardens and wildlife are abundant. Can see golf course but not easily.
Parking easy and safe.

We stayed at the hotel as a family of four for one night in May. The service we received was amazing. We arrived really early morning and asked to leave our luggage in storage but instead they offered to quickly set up our room so that we could check in properly and leave everything in the room before venturing out. Once back at the hotel we used the pool and children loved it. It’s warm and clean and they have some swimming aids in the pool area that we could use while there. The beds were super comfortable and bathroom clean. All in all we had an amazing stay! Thank you Chloe and team!

We were just here for one night before flying out of Edinburgh. It was a great alternative to higher priced hotels near the airport. There is a bus stop right outside this quaint spa-resort. It was clean, cozy, and well-maintained. I would recommend.

HH never fails to deliver ! We have been frequent visitors over the years and it really feels like a home from home. The staff are always exceptionally ,professional, yet still take time give each customer the personal touch. They all deliver above and beyond , a prime example of quality customer service ! The rooms are spotless, warm and inviting , the grounds are just a delight to relax in a testomony to the housekeeping staff. The spa is worth booking in for too !! Thank you once more to manager Andrew and his team for your exceptionally hospitality.
