Title:Horrific Experience-Robbed While Sleeping in Hotel Room with My Child

Review:

During our recent stay(28-28.08)at Hotel Berne Opera in Paris my son and I were robbed in our hotel room while we were sleeping.This is not just a bad review-this was a traumatic and terrifying experience that no guest should ever go through.

Here is what was stolen during the night, while we were asleep in locked room:

•Our passports(both mine and my child's)

•Money

•A brand new phone

•Public transport passes for me and my child

Due to the gross negligence of the hotel,we were left stranded in a foreign country without identification, money,or means of communication. The stress and fear we expect were overwhelming-especially for my young child.We were not on vacation anyway, we were in survival mode,just truing to make it back home to the UK.

Because of the theft,we had to:

•Buy new tickets at a much higher price

•Book a hotel due to the late arrival

•Purchase new bus tickets

•Cover extensice transportation and food expenses.

To make things worse the hotel has ignored all three of my official complaints.This silence raises serious concerns and makes me wonder if this happened before.

This was not only a violation of our safety ,but also a complete failure of the hotel to provide a secure environment for guests.
I am not sharing this experience lightly-I believe future travelers should be warned about the risks of staying at this property,especially families

We had a good time in Paris and the location of the Hotel was good.
Somehow we had the impression when we booked through Expedia that breakfast was included but it was not when we arrived. Very few of the guests took advantage of the Breakfast we think because it was overpriced for what it was.
There was a strange rule that guests could only have one programmed key to each room. Which meant that if one went out and the other stayed in their return presumed the partner would not fall asleep and be woken by the others return. The room we were in 42 was showing signs of age. Damage to the Bath, fridge door surround something broken off with a sharp screw sticking out. The receptionist during the day was rather officious.

The hotel is located less than 500 meters away from the Roma metro station. The neighborhood is quiet and safe as the hotel is surrounded by houses and restaurants. There is a mini market very close to the hotel, so you can do a last minute purchase safely.

The hotel is comfortable, the rooms are big compared to the local standard and they always keep all the facilities clean.

The continental breakfast was always fresh and delicious, and next to the breakfast area they have a room for the kids (or you) to play Nintendo Wii and boardgames.

It was an excellent choice for me and my family!

We loved our recent stay at Hotel Berne Opera. A little off a beaten path, we found the neighborhood to be a nice, relaxing and a quite place after full days exploring Paris. The staff was friendly and very helpful in answering our questions, ensuring our stay was comfortable and the breakfast was a great treat each morning. The location was also great as we could easily walk to several metro or train stations and get anywhere around Paris usually within 30 minutes. Not the fanciest of hotels - but clean, quite, friendly staff made this stay one of my favorites I have had in Europe so far. Would definitely stay there again and hope to do so again.

Perfect hotel small 6th floor shower

Only issue I had was the 6th floor bathroom shower has a slant if you are tall it makes showering uncomfortable. Other than that hotel and staff are perfect. If you go na blow up bathroom they have windows what open up that circulates the air faster than exhaust fan.

I was really pleased with our choice of Hotel Berne Opera for our first stay in Paris. Although a small hotel, it had everything we needed. The location was great, a minute or so away from the Metro and a short walk to a wide choice of restaurants. The Opera area was a short 15-minute walk with Montmartre Village and Sacre Coeur just 25 minutes walk away. When we arrived to leave our luggage a couple of hours before check in, we were delighted to find our room already ready for us. An accessible, ground floor room, it was spacious and well equipped. Breakfast was great and there was even a small games room. We would stay at Hotel Berne Opera again.

I have enjoyed repeated stays at this property and appreciate the location, the breakfast, and the staff, but my experiences are somewhat overshadowed by the baffling hotel communication before my most recent stay.

I requested a specific room through Expedia’s messaging system. I was told that the room was not available during my stay. I understand! I then asked for a room with a balcony but was told that all balcony rooms were unavailable as well. I understand!

At check-in, I mentioned my communication about a balcony room. Not only were balcony rooms available, but the EXACT ROOM I wanted was available and given to me. Why such \"No and No\" communication before check-in but then \"Yes and Yes\" at check-in?

I can't help but feel that the hotel treats guests differently based on how they initially book (3rd party Expedia vs. Hotel Berne Opera site). From my perspective, I was either lied to about room availability, or the hotel had no accurate room availability information while communicating with me.

I also considered the possibility that the requested room had later become available through a cancellation, but they could have easily told me this through our Expedia messages. They had also sent me a confusing message regarding check-in preferences through the messaging system.

You will very much enjoy the hotel once there, but please do not expect clear or accurate communication beforehand.

Beware of their Sleazy Front Desk Agents

This hotel advertises that they have airport shuttle so I arranged one on the evening before check-out. I learned that they don’t have shuttle but the front desk agent called the taxi for us. I’m not sure if the hotel is pulling this scam or just the individual at the front desk, but he insisted that I should pay €15 in cash as a booking deposit which he claimed would be added to the €60 taxi flat rate going to the airport. Fast forward to check-out date, our taxi arrived and told us that we still need to pay the full €60 and that our driver never received the cash deposit that I paid the night before.

Overall good

This is a reliable mid-range hotel with good transport connections. Our room had a kettle, an empty mini-fridge which was useful for keeping some snacks and drinks chilled. The lift was tiny, there is space for one person and a suitcase, but that is not unusual in Paris.

The only little complaint which I have are the pillows, they were not comfortable.

The room was on a quiet street without traffic noise and with good insulation. Another positive thing were the Fragonard toiletries in the bathroom.

Great location but not amazing hotel

The hotel is located in a great area and very close to the Metro station. The staff was really nice and tried to help with everything we needed. The room was cleaned every day.
The hotel is not very well maintained (many broken tiles in the bathroom, poor showerhead with clogs and what felt like a broken floor) also, we found that the walls were really thin and the rooms are very close together so we heard bathroom breaks, shower usage and TV from the next rooms.
Overall we had a good stay but we were only at the hotel between 21:00 - 9:00 most days.

The staff was very helpful in helping me to make my trips to the tourist attractions and places to eat. The internet was great and the room very comfortable. The hotel was good in a quiet neighborhood with nearby public transport and a supermarket just around the corner. The staff was nice and professional (especially Pascal who was super helpful) with the exception of Mandy who was indifferent and antisocial. The rooms were clean and in a good state. We were comfortable staying there except with a problem with the doors where the locking mechanism was sometimes on the fritz. However, the hotel staff and manager were responsive and even offered to switch rooms.

Nice hotel in Paris. From what I've heard, most Paris hotels are very small so it was what I expected. I forgot my converter/adaptor for plugs but luckily the hotel lets you borrow them (just will put a 20 euro hold but will delete it when you return the converter at check out). The wifi is very spotty, luckily we had our own pocket wifi. Housekeeping does not really clean your room, they will just tidy it up by emptying out the trash, tucking your bed in a little bit. Overall good stay.

We were thrilled when we walked into the room and saw we had a little balcony with a table and chairs. As European hotel rooms are usually small, this had plenty of room for three of us.
We didn’t always get the refresh of shampoo, etc. we needed, but the front desk was quick to make things right.

Bad reviews blown out of the water!

Having seen some negative comments left, i was pleasantly surprised. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Nothing too much trouble. Rooms were spotless. Had an issue with shower door as it had come off its runner at the bottom, i didn't even mention it, but came back to find complete new door. Chambermaid must have reported it. A thoroughly enjoyable stay with extremely comfortable beds. Would recommend to anyone.

A decent hotel for a reasonable price. Had a nightmare of a first night as the travel cot was broken. They had propped it up on a chest of drawers hoping we wouldn't notice. This is pretty dangerous and scary to think what could of happened if we hadn't noticed and the cot had collapsed on the baby. A very helpful member of staff helped for over an hour but both travel cots in the hotel were broken so we had to make do. Consequently our baby was very overtired and unsettled. The next day we had a new cot but no proper apology or compensation from anyone senior. Wouldn't recommend this hotel for this reason. Shame as otherwise it's decent.

The attitude of the lady staff is rude! You can see how she treat the Chinese guest and European guest is totally different. I informed her the heater in my room was not working but yet no people come to repair it!
This kind of serving attitude is totally out! And I will not recommend to my friends and family to stay in this hotel!

Only slight criticism would be the breakfast;if you arrived even slightly after 9am you would have to ask for the hot buffet and butter. However there was no problem in this being sorted for you. While my stay was not terrible, it was not up to my standard compared to similar European hotels in price range, and most of the problems can be summed up by \"inconsistent customer service.\" There were times when the staff was helpful and facilities and perks were good, but when it wasn't good... oh boy.

First, our room was not thoroughly cleaned/refreshed each day. Towels were replaced sporadically, glasses not washed from day to day, toiletries not re-supplied... it was a new surprise every day. The general cleanliness in the bathroom was not up to par, either - the shower curtain smelled strongly of mildew.

Secondly, customer service was just not at all a priority for most of the staff. I know to expect a different level of helpfulness outside the US, but this was just indifference toward guests. For one, we were quoted an incorrect price for our airport shuttle (less than half of the actual cost), but that was minor compared to what will be our most vivid memory of our stay. The fire alarm malfunctioned at 1 am - let me emphasize that my complaint is not initially with that, as I realize accidents happen. My complaint is that it went off 3 MORE times over the course of the next six hours, ruining our sleep, and the staff never acknowledged it again. There were some embarrassed apologies during the initial confusion, but NOTHING more. I don't know that I expected our room to be comped, especially since we paid through Expedia, but I did expect more apology/explanation.

First time in Paris and had high expectations with this hotel due to past reviews, it proved to be a let down.

CONS
- BATHROOM Biggest let down of the whole stay. Dated and moldy the sink was clogged, water pressure was extremely low, and the shower water was not hot at all. We arrived around 8-9PM at night, and was directed to our room 32. I contacted the reception immediately for a room change, but after several conversations the man stubbornly told me that he'll contact a technician for tomorrow to fix it. This was a huge mistake as the problem was never fixed. Three out of the four days, I was requesting a room change but was always turned down due to \"complications with cleaning.\" Not only did this leave a bad impression on the hotel, it definitely ruined my entire mood for the trip.
- BREAKFAST. Extremely simple breakfast with just croissants, shelf-bought juice, tiny sausages, small servings of scrambled eggs, cheese, fruit salad, and yogurt. That's pretty much it. Definitely room for an upgrade to a 3-star hotel breakfast.
- WIFI. Wifi was occasionally great but was annoying when you had to subscribe every single time signal broke off.

PROS (+):
- LOCATION. If it wasn't for the less than two minute walk from Rome Station (Line 2), I would've requested a full refund and a change in hotel.

Overall, this hotel definitely has room for some serious improvements to become what is expected of a typical 3-star hotel.

I picked this hotel bc it was in the 8th arrondisement and I thought it was walkable to Champs Elysee - not! But that's ok, the hotel was a gem. The room was a little small but served its purpose. Modern amenities and had a french balcony you can open and people watch. The breakfast was AWESOME. Full buffet(incl. in my booking), though pastry should be fresh daily and not chewy like day old.
My only discomfort was that the shower pressure and amount of water was a little more than a trickle. A normal 15 minute shower would take 30 mins. Bathroom amenities were great.
We didn't get a chance to explore the neighbourhood so not sure what site seeing goodies were around. This hotel is also close to a post office.

Great neighborhood and great hotel for family stay

Berne Opera was just the perfect hotel for myself and two teens in Batignolles neighborhood. We drove in so had to park a car and the hotel has a disount program with a public garage a quarter mile walk away, very helpful. Hotel is a 2 minute walk from Rome Metro station, very easy to get around via the Metro. Staff speaks English and all were very helpful helping us get around and offering advice. The included breakfast was pretty good and a time saver for us. Had an amazing Paris view right out of our 4th floor window. Would not hesitate to stay in this neighborhood and this hotel again.

Nice clean hotel close to metro

We only stayed in Paris a couple of days but the hotel staff made us feel welcome and went above and beyond to help us with our questions. This hotel is conveniently located across the street from the metro. I will stay here again when I come back to Paris.

Pleasant trip

Myself and my daughter had a very pleasant stay in Paris at this hotel. We had a lovely room with a balcony on the 5th floor. Staff were very nice and helpful. Hotel is within walking distance of Sacre Coeur and Montmartre and very close to the busy Moulin Rouge area but location of hotel is nice and quiet. Metro stop just around corner from hotel. Would definitely stay here again.

Good Location

Travelling as a family of 3 and stayed in the hotel for 3 nights. Found it very easy to reach after taking the Eurostar from England to Nord de Gare station and then hoping onto the metro station and getting off at Rome metro. It was then just a 5 minute walk to the hotel. Ideally situated close to the metro which will get you to all the main tourist attractions. It is within close walking distance to shops and restaurants. Felt like a safe quiet neighbourhood.
Had a junior suite which was perfect for family of 3. The breakfast in the hotel is pricey but the little supermarket just on the corner has lovely fresh pastries and baguettes available daily so that's where my breakfasts came from, as well as all our snacks and alcohol. I used the laundromat a couple of streets away which was very convenient. I definitely recommend this Hotel and if ever in Paris again would definitely stay at Hotel Berne Opera.

This hotel steps away from metro stop Rome was great for me as a woman travelling alone. It was small, safe, clean and comfortable. Restaurants close by made everything easy.

Love this Hotel!

This was my second hotel in my stay in Paris and was such a relief after my first hotel. I was greeted by Helaine who by the end of my stay I wanted to take her home with me. So nice and very helpful. The hotel itself was located in the perfect area. Close to sights to see, right on the Rome Metro station and just a short train ride away from most everything.
My room was just what I needed, I opted for a smaller room with a twin bed as I traveled by myself and this was perfect. The room also had a small table and a mini fridge which was so convenient being that I was there for 6 days. There was not much of a view but again I as in Paris and out seeing the sites I was good for a quiet area at night. There was wifi in the room but it was hit and miss and not always easy to connect to.
The bathroom was great a easy to step in shower, sink and hairdryer.
The additional staff at the desk were great including Helaine :), Said, Kristima and Nicolas. They all had great personalities and made the stay so much better.
The area was great, from this hotel I walked to Moulin Rouge, Parc de Monceau, Sacre Couer and some other great neighborhoods.
This Hotel will be my go to stay when I am in Paris and I do hope that in the next couple of years I make it back. Thank you Hotel Berne Opera.

A wonderful boutique hotel in Paris.

This is the perfect quaint boutique hotel in Paris. It's close to two metro stops that will get you wherever you need to be in the city. It's within walking distance to several cafe's, restaurants and bakeries. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is very clean and all around lovely.

Great location generous size room and superb staff

Had a great time. Room was spacious compared to what I expected from other locations on previous visits. Staff was excellent. Only revomendation I would suggest is that the cleaning staff use done bleach in the shower to kill some mildew. While I would not say it was bad but rather just a pet peeve of mine lol. I can be a bit neurotic at times. I recommend the hotel and would suggest that since the location is in the city I do not mind city or metro noise since the convenience of location is more important. Excellent staff and good stay

Close to Metro, value for money in Paris

Arrived late around 9pm via Metro, was greeted well by the front desk with recommendations to restaurants nearby the hotel. Close walk to Place de Clichy and Moulin Rouge (don't recommend this at night). Stayed in the single room and it was smaller than expected. Washroom and the room itself was a bit run down.

Pleasant little hotel close to Metro

Check in ok but had to wait over an hour for our room to be cleaned although we did arrive shortly after 2pm. The allocated room was ok but was exceptionally close to a noisy Metro roof. That was the worst aspect and in hot weather no air conditioning and strong afternoon sun made the room uncomfortably hot. Keeping the large window open exacerbated the Metro noise.)

Great staff, comfortable, safe away from the crowd

As a female, traveling alone to Paris for the first time in June, I found the hotel wonderful. It was safe, convenient and the hotel staff became like family after my week's stay.

The hotel is perfectly situated between two different metro lines making it super convenient to get to anywhere of note in the city. The best part it that the hotel is not overrun by tourists and is a quite sanctuary. It is easy to get to from the airport, close to all attractions (usually just a few stops by metro) and you are away from the throngs of tourists. Bonus!

Did I mention how wonderful that staff is? I had been warned that as an American I might not get the warmest welcome in Paris. I found the complete opposite. I arrived at 10:00 am to the hotel and they immediately put me in a room knowing that I had just flown for 10 hours which I found very gracious and caring. Then when I was ready to hit the town they armed me with maps, directions, secret routes and times to visit the main attractions (lots of inside info) making my visit so enjoyable. They also gave me plenty of warnings (every staff member every day) that I should watch for pick pockets at the main attractions. I of course had no problems. It was their courteous concern that kept me mindful.

NOTE FOR AMERICANS: Please know that Paris hotel rooms are probably the size of you bathroom. Don't take it personally or make a big fuss just go with the flow and you will enjoy yourself immensely.
