We had an exceptional 10-day stay at this hotel! The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming from the moment we arrived. The buffet service was amazing with a great variety of desserts, fruits, and fresh salads every day. While the food selection was overall very good, we would’ve loved to see more beef and chicken options, as there was a lot of pork and fish.

The pool area is beautiful and very well maintained, making it a relaxing spot to spend the day. We also really appreciated the snack bar with hot items—a great touch for between meals!

One of the most memorable parts of our trip was celebrating my son’s birthday. I simply mentioned it in the special instructions when booking the room, and on his birthday, the staff surprised him with a birthday cake delivered to our room. It meant so much to us and made the day extra special.

A huge thank you to all the staff for your hard work and for going above and beyond every day to make sure every guest feels special. You truly made our vacation one to remember!!!!!

The property was disappointed, it was not what I expected. The food was not as great, choices were limited, there was more pork than I wanted. The mattress was thin and old, I did not get any good sleep.
On good note the property was clean and the staff was great.

Great resort for families - especially those with older (teenage) children. Between the mini golf, tennis, billiards, lawn chess, and the pools, the kids were kept busy. We loved the \"activity team\" that organized and ran all the events by the pool every day. Staff, especially bartenders, were really friendly and even fun. There was plenty to eat and drink all day, but not always a wide variety of food choices. We could only book each of the two specialty restaurants (Italian and Medeiran) once each. Surprisingly, there was no small on-site store for incidentals like sunscreen, toiletries, snacks, clothes, gifts, etc... Also, many popular drinks were moved to a \"premium\" membership and we couldnt even buy one from that menu on a special occasion without upgrading our entire stay! We had to leave the resort to buy those drinks, and so we did. Money the resort could have easily earned. All said and done, we all had a good time, but it wouldnt have taken much from the resort to make it so much better!

The property was clean. The Staff were helpful. The average patron here was 60 or older. The buffet was ok. You have to stay a certain number of nights ti be able to make a reservation at their other restaurants. I could hear the people in the next room. Would consider a hotel closer to the city center which would make it more walkable. There is access to the Formosa which has beach access as well as some cafe on the beach.

From checking in to dining to nightly entertainment. This resort is above our expectations.
The staff at the front desk just couldn’t do enough To make sure our stay was everything we wanted.
The dining and wait staff were beyond accommodative to any needs. Friendly, kind and respectful. Helen at the dining runs a great staff, it was so great to see a head staff having fun with everyone. So much respect show amongst staff. And, yes the food was absolutely great. Every meal had so much to choose from.
Pestana Royal exceeded our expectations! Thank you for making our vacation more than we could have imagined.

There are plenty of food options available for selection for your meals. The staff was very attentive to our needs and provided to-go lunches to take on our excursions - simply need to order day before and pick up on our way out. They also offer bus service to and from Funchal (need to check bulletin for schedule). The front desk team took initiative with providing a very nice birthday cake and champagne-truly appreciated. Highly recommend and hope to be back again.

The food at the buffet was excellent. Lots of choices. Fresh fruit and salads and a great selection of fish and meats and vegetarian options. Staff are very friendly. It is just west of Funchal so a little quieter but walked into Old Town and had a rental car to explore the island. Lots of great hiking in Madeira. I will come back!!!!

The service and the quality of the food are excellent. The gardens and pools are beautiful and very clean. However, I can't say the same for the rooms. I was very disappointed with the condition of the rooms for a 5 stars hotel, they are old, the carpets are worn and smell damp. The rooms are badly in need to be refreshed/renovated.

This is a great safe place for families. We brought our toddler with us and the all inclusive aspect was so helpful to make sure we could meet her needs and the food was pretty simple and non-spicy. This might not be our favorite food but was great for small children. The activities, music, playground, beach access, and location were also great. The hotel was able to connect us with a great contact for a private driver. The dining and drinks staff was so friendly and helpful. The reception was professional and friendly as well.

Areas of improvement would be a bit cleaner and updated rooms. The room smelt a bit musty and felt old but not dirty. Some of the amenities in the room were not that posh but that was very acceptable for the price and the things we did get from the property. We could also hear someone use the toilet/shower above us which was a bit frustrating. Also, there is no real room service all day as was mentioned to us.

I would definitely stay here again with my family and recommend to anyone who likes quiet non-party atmosphere. There were also quite a few retirees who stayed while we were there and they were so kind and sweet to our child that it made the experience even better!

Last minute decision to go to Pestana Royal and first in Madeirs. After the booking I read the reviews and was in two minds. I didnt need to be as the place and rooms are spotlessly clean, food caters for all needs. A number of choices for hot and cold fish or meat eaters, vegetarians,(vegetables all dente). The rooms could do updating as a bit old fashion, but very clean. What does make this five star hotel are the staff. Not fair to name individuals,as they are all amazing, work hard and with pleasure. I certainly will be back.

Without exception the team at the hotel were friendly and helpful. The hotel is about an hours walk from Funchal city centre but there are shops, cafes and restaurants nearby only a 10-15 minute walk. There was good variation in the food, with each night having a different theme in the buffet and the alternative option of booking a place in one of the restaurants on site.

The property is great for young families (under 10 years old) or retired people. Because there is really nothing to do during the day except be near the pool, you are not downtown so bus is needed.
For that though the staff (Flavio Soares from dining, Front Desk Ines Santos and Faria Sousa) are great and always there to explain what and where to go visit items on the island. This mad the trip to Madeira enjoyable.
Hotel Ownership:
They are cheap! In all aspects,
Food, we have food on the grill and the next day it is in the salad and on the buffet sometime two days on it. We had the same soup for five days, often I remarked either the fish was frozen or old either case it has no taste and was like paper ..most fish has texture and can feel the meat.
Around the hotel we found repeating places where maintenance is needed has not been done.
Direct beach access the hotel does NOT have. You had to leave the hotel and walk up a hill, then walk couple hundred meters and the go down a road and steps to get to the beach. All because the elevator they have been not repaired and has not for a long time. So Hani capped people impossible to visit the beach.

This is NOT a 5 five maybe a three star.

We’ve just returned from a fabulous 4 night stay at the Pestana Royal and we had a fantastic time.. from the minute we walked in the staff were welcoming and friendly.. The service and food quality in the restaurant was great, the buffet was clean, well stocked, plentiful food and lots of variety. Rooms were clean and comfortable. The pool area and pool bar were great, surrounded by gorgeous tropical gardens. We made use of the free shuttle to Funchal, great service.. would thoroughly recommend and will definitely return to Madeira to this or one of the other Pestana hotels.

Tho hotel is nice however the service needs to be improved. It would be good if the pool staff would require guests to keep the rules, which are on the wall, in and around the pool. We shared a room but needed to ask for soaps and towels reguraly. The provided pick nick basket was the same each day, and very basic. Some staff at the restaurant was quite rude. The shutter bus could run longer and all day long too. There are room to improve the entertainment in the hotel too. Overall we found the standard worsened since last year.

The property is beautifully laid out, the vegetation is very pleasing, walking around the property to get to the pool, so lush and green.
The staff are amazing, granted there may be one or two who are more difficult, the rest of the staff makes up for.
The food could be tastier, however with such an immense buffet there is always something to choose that agrees with you, and the unlimited drinks are splendid.
The views to the ocean are beautiful.
If I were to go back to Madeira I’d more than likely book here again

Disappointing for a variety of reasons

From the moment we checked in, we felt we were sold something different online than reality. No champagne at the Check-in, 3 of the 4 restaurants were closed and the one that was open was fully booked for the next 3 nights. The staff were also quite unwilling to resolve our concerns. This left us with the only option of 1 buffet restaurant which was our option for both lunch and dinner every night of our stay. The food wasn’t bad, but it was certainly not impressive given the price point of this hotel. The staff — from the check-in concierge, to the bartenders, to the pool staff have been very unhelpful. Their mentality is “go check if there is XYZ” vs finding out the answer to your question. For a high-end resort, this is simply unacceptable. This applied both to the pool staffs response when asking them for a towel, the bar tending staff when asking about food (when the only food option was closed) to the front desk not resolving our concerns to get seated in the dining room on any of our 3 nights during our stay. They did not offer any form of compensation until the last day, but we did not feel it was worth the effort to move rooms for 1 night. Our room was great with a balcony and great view. The pools and views of this resort are stunning. However, the level of service, friendliness, and lack of adequate food and drink options needs to be shared. Don’t expect good cocktails or food at this resort. Everything is pre-made, and designed for the masses. Would not recommend

Hotel is very welcoming, staff friendly & clean throughout. Communal areas are dressed in marble and mahogany/walnut. Deluxe Rooms are very small, Superior are very large. I understand the Deluxe Rooms were originally 1 room which has now been split into 2. There is only 1 bar which is disappointing for such a large hotel. There is also a pool bar, but an additional cocktail bar on lobby level would be a great addition. Main restaurant food is good, service always excellent. As was the pool bar. Main bar service is generally slow. Only 1 of the 3 speciality restaurants is open at a time (& gets booked very quickly) and 1 was closed altogether. Overall I would give this a solid 4* and rate it 8/10.

Lovely hotel and very polite ,cheerful and helpful staff. We had to change rooms because we both got bad colds, and felt it may have been something in the air vents. Also we had a modernised room with open plan bathroom in the first room, and soon realised that we were open to all. If the door to the room was opened, anybody walking by could see in. Much preferred the privacy of the second, less modern
bathroom. Also the standard of the food wasn’t what we expected from a 5 star hotel.

Nice hotel but dining tables too close together in buffet dining area, it can’t cope with the amount of people comfortably. Hotel runs a courtesy bus into Funchal which is great as the hotel is a bit far out for a pleasant walk. The pebble beach is reached by a lift but not a pleasant area. Rooms are lovely, bright and comfortable except mattress is a bit hard but toppers are available upon request. Some of the evening entertainment was very good but the room was unattractive, especially as it was the only bar area. Gardens very attractive. In all a lovely hotel with good service and a reasonable cost.

Overall ok stay, check in is at 3pm which isn’t really advertised anywhere online other than reviews. Free upgrade to a balcony room. Staff are friendly and informative. Bizarre bathroom situation in which glass separates the room with just a wind down blind but no door. Noticed a few ants on the last day in the room. Food and drink/ separate restaurants felt below standard. Pools was nice but can get busy to grab a space. Good views of the sea and access to the beach.

OK..... so I arrived and I got double booked, so was transferred to the Pestana Casino Park. I really liked the Casino Park hotel. Despite it being jaded and in need of a lick of paint, generally the hotel was decently maintained. The staff were excellent, although the service was just above average they made up for everything alse with a great atitude. The Maitre’d seem to have much of the restaurants well organized but their atitude was great. The bar staff were probably lagging a little but again their atitude was great. The only thing that messed up our stay was this wasn’t the Pestana hotel we were supposed to be in, looking at the reviews afterwards I think we had a lucky escape. If the Pestana Casino Park hotel could do the all inclusive same time next year we would book again and for twice as long. Sadly they dont :(. I’d reccommend thie Casin Park hotel to anyone - it’s not 5 star but great for a holiday). If somebody booked the Pestana Royal I would tell them to cancel based on being double booked. There were 3 other couples from different tour operators that had the same experience as us on the Friday alone.

Fabulous hotel!

Having read an unfavourable review I did consider cancelling my stay here. Thank goodness I didn't.
I requested a taxi through the hotel from the airport and although we arrived one hour early it was waiting for me. On arrival the check in procedure was quick and I was given a lot of information about the hotel and services.
My room was comfortable and spotlessly clean with a lovely view. The bed was very comfortable with good quality linen.
There was a large and varied buffet, frequently replenished. I also ate in the Italian restaurant and that was very good. The bar was a little lacking in atmosphere but there was entertainment several evenings. I also took advantage of the shuttle into Funchal town and also a walking tour organised by the entertainments team.
I took advantage of a pilates class and a massage, both excellent.
Travelling frequently on my own I sometimes feel invisible but the staff here were superb and I felt very comfortable. In particular Christiana in the buffet restaurant and the gentleman on reception who checked me in and out. I regret I did not note his name, but he rememberd my name and room number each time I had a query.
I am hoping to visit Madeira again when hopefully it doesn't rain all the time, and this will be my hotel of choice. I only hope it is not so popular there will be no room for me!

New Years in Madeira at the Pestana Royal

This is one of the best resorts I have been to. The staff were amazing, The views spectacular.
The New Years Celebration that they provided was so memorable. Best views of the fireworks!!!
If we needed a cab, they got us the best at the best price. Recommended what to see, how to get there,
best restaurants.We had wonderful times at the lounge where entertainment was provided nightly. The entertainment was awesome too!! They made us feel like family and that we mattered to them.
We needed to get a hotel in Lisbon for our layover home. They went out of the way to help us book. What a blessing that was, the storm up the NE coast of USA caused us to stay in Lisbon an extra 4 days. The recommended hotel was listed as 3* and was by far a 5*.Everything that they did for us was above and beyond.

It would be good if the staff were provided with uniform trousers rather than jeans which I think sends the wrong message but all the staff gave excellent service

Our second visit to the wonderful island of Madeira. The Pestana Royal Premium Ocean and Spa Resort, is situated to the west of Funchal within the vast area of modern hotel complexes. It's too far to walk into Funchal, which is not a problem as the hotel provides a courtesy bus into the city centre, which works well. The area around the hotel is a bit bland, but everything you need is provided within the hotel. The hotel is extremely clean, the public areas are spacious and there is a large buffet style restaurant.

In addition to the buffet, there are three other restaurants where you need to make a reservation. We tried two and found them quite good. By the pool there is a snack bar.

The best thing about the hotel by far is the staff who are excellent. We found them polite, helpful and very friendly.

At the rear of the hotel a lift takes you down, where you can access a stony beach, a walkway heads east and via a short tunnel leads to the main promenade. We're not poolside sunbathers, preferring to explore the island instead. There always seemed to be plenty of sun beds available whenever we looked. Music seemed to be play quite a bit around the pool as well. This may not be to your taste.

The room (a deluxe, which I think means 'standard') was a tad small but quite comfortable. A safe, kettle, mini-fridge and strong wifi signal was most welcome.

We came to have a great holiday and this hotel certainly delivered for us

Loved this hotel, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, the hotel was clean and modern and bright. The bedroom was very large with two very big single beds. Lovely bathroom with loads of room (one of my bugbears is having no room in the bathrooms).

We received a complimentary upgrade, so room was good size but in need of updating, bathrooms were 'tired' looking and i wiped the surface with dettol wipe as usually do on holidays (lol) and it was 'black' with dirt so cleaniness was not great. Lobby areas were fine but toilets again in need of more attention. We had an influx of arrivals mid-week and there was a shortage of sunbeds. If anything, the friendly and service-orientated staff made the holiday, they met all requests and were very accommodating. The entertainment host (mother was from Goa) was super engaging with people of all ages and backgrounds, real credit to the team.

My stay at Pestana Royal was Fantastic. With the assistance of Fatima at the Front Desk and Her Staff, she provided me with an excellent room. My Fiance' slept very well and I was able to enjoy the views from our balcony. The meals at the Buffet and other restaurants were delicious. The Pool Bar & Grill was staffed by several excellent Young employees. I especially enjoyed the Hamburgers. Finally the Pools were well maintained and were crystal clear. The Recreation Staff also did an excellent job providing dancing lesson, water aerobics, mini golf and water polo.

Parcheggio interno a pagamento (15€ al giorno), in una zona senza possibilità di parcheggiare vicino e con accesso attraverso una salita da 1°marcia.
Ascensore a oltre 100 metri dalla reception. Pulizia approssimativa, capelli nella vasca e formiche nel lavandino (foto dimostrativa)
Il frigobar con solo 2 mini succhi di frutta in brick (foto dimostrativa).
Bottiglia dell'acqua da doversi riempire nel ristorante al dispenser.
Cibo di scarsa qualità e di riciclo continuo.
Il massimo è stato il giorno del mio compleanno: torta di auguri fatta trovare in camera e, dopo aver ripetutamente segnalato l'allergia di mia moglie all'arancia, hanno pensato bene di decorare la torta con 2 belle fette di arancia fresche. Mi meraviglio che un tour operator come Expedia possa avere tra i suoi alberghi una struttura così. Delusione totale, soprattutto perché ho scelto una struttura con trattamento all inclusive a 5 stelle.

Das Hotel bietet viele Freizeitangebote. Der Service und das Animationsteam sind sehr gut. Wir haben sogar unsere erste Schaumparty mitgemacht. Es war grandios.
Die Zimmer und Betten sind gut. Das Badezimmer ist schon etwas in die Jahre gekommen, aber uns hat es gereicht.
Das Essen ist vielseitig und war lecker.

Je pense que cet établissement ne mérite pas 5etoiles salle de bains mini par contre une cuisinette qui n’a rien à faire dans cette chambre et d’autre part la nourriture très répétitive pour un séjour de 9 jours ont arrive vite à saturation

Bom hotel com itens a melhorar.

A limpeza do quarto deixou a desejar. Só arrumava as camas, os copos usados não eram recolhidos ou trocados.
A cama não muito confortável (dura).
A comida nos restaurantes muito boa, porém não havia sumos naturais somente artificiais, ruim para um hotel 5 estrelas.

Im großen und Ganzen war das Hotel wirklich in Ordnung. Speißen und Getränke sowie der Service ließen keine Wünsche offen.
Die Inneneinrichtung war in zwei von drei Zimmern deutlich in die Jahre gekommen. Der darin befindliche Teppich war abgenutzt und machte einen etwas unhygienischen Eindruck. Der Wasserschaden im zweiten Zimmer wurde abgestellt, auch wenn die Klimaanlage somit nicht mehr funktioniert. Das war aber akzeptabel.

Sehr lobenswert ist jedoch, dass das Hotel bereits zu Beginn (nach ca. 2 Tagen) einen Feedbackbogen geschickt hat. Unser Lob und Kritik wurde sehr offen aufgenommen und versucht, jegliche Unannehmlichkeiten abzustellen.

Alles in Allem trotzdem kleinerer ,,Mängel'' ein gelungener Urlaub :)

Sehr nettes Personal im Hotel - jedoch ist das Hotel in die Jahre gekommen, was vor allem die Ausstattung der Zimmer zeigt. Der Aussenbereich ist sehr schön mit vielen Pflanzen gestaltet. Die Atmosphäre im Restaurant ist leider unangenehm laut, zu viele Gäste auf engem Raum und nicht klimatisiert. Dazu wird das Geschirr zwischen den Gästen lautstark abgeräumt und gesammelt.

Das Hotel ist insgesamt bestens geeignet, um sich rundum wohlzufühlen: Die Lage nahe Funchal ist perfekt, mit dem Mietwagen oder dem Bus kommt man auch ohne Taxi prima in die Stadt. das Personal ist äußerst zuvorkommend und Zimmer und Anlage sind - wenn auch alles schon in die Jahre gekommen und renovierungsbedürftig - sehr sauber. Der Poolbereich ist okay, jedoch zur Hochsaison nicht komplett für alle Gäste ausreichend, die nachmittags noch eine Liege mit Schirm ergattern möchten. Beim Thema Essen kommt hingegen niemand zu kurz: Restaurant mit Frühstück, Mittag- und Abendessen, Poolbar, Burgerbar am Tag, Pizzeria... Hungrig bleibt niemand. Mehr Abwechslung bei den Speisen wäre aber schön gewesen.
Jeden Tag gibt es ein wechselndes Animationsprogramm am Pool und Aktivitäten wie Tennis, Obstschnitzen, Tanzkurs oder Wine Tasting und am Abend treten wechselnde Musik-Acts auf (die mal besser und mal schlechter sind).

Good hotel, very clean, kind personel. On 45 min. walking distance from the towncener. Great room, pay a little extra for seaview: it's worth it. Very good food!
Only downside were the worndown matrasses.

Notre séjour s’est globalement bien passé.
Après une première découverte en mars 2022, nous avons de nouveau décidé de passer quelques jours de vacances en août 2023 dans cet hôtel.

Le personnel de chambre est toujours très agréable et maintient la propreté au niveau attendu.
Néanmoins, la qualité de service n’a pas toujours été au rendez-vous comparé à notre premier séjour.
En effet, des soins mis à disposition dans les chambres ( crèmes, après shampooing) n’ont pas été distribués cette fois ci.

De plus, une formule premium proposant des cocktails ( mojito etc) sont facturé en supplément choses, qui n’était pas mentionné lors de la réservation, ni même qui existait lors de notre premier séjour en mars 2022.

En ce qui concerne la nourriture, elle reste correct et varie tous les soirs, ce qui est une bonne chose.

La vie dans l’hôtel est très appréciable avec des animateurs qui propose une multitude d’activités ( tennis, volleyball, danse, aquagym, karaoke etc)

En ce qui concerne l’environnement extérieur, il est également au rendez-vous avec une très jolie vue depuis l’hôtel, ainsi qu’un accès très facile aux transports en commun ligne 1 et 2.

Personnellement , je recommande cet établissement qui , après discussion avec d’autres voyageurs , reste un très bon hôtel à Madere!

Wer aufgrund der Bewertungen und Kategorisierung eine etwas höhere Erwartungshaltung aufbaut, sollte ein anderes Hotel wählen. Die unterschiedlichen Bereiche sind sehr unterschiedlich gestaltet, aber sicherlich keine 5*.Das Personal ist auf natürliche Art und Weise sehr hilfsbereit und freundlich. Wirklich angenehm! Der Service beim Essen ist allerdings fast übereifrig. Da wird einem schon mal der Teller weggenommen, während man den letzten Bissen in den Mund schiebt. Aber auch hier ist mir jeder freundlich begegnet. Ich habe nur Frühstück und Abendessen im Hotel gegessen. Ich habe mir täglich ein Lunchpaket bestellt. Schön, dass es die Möglichkeit gibt, aber es ist sicherlich nicht 5* wert. Jeden Tag gab es das gleiche: 2 Scheiben trockenes Brot mit 1 Scheibe Käse und 1 Scheibe Schinken, 1 Apfel, 1 Stück Kuchen, 1 kl. Flasche Wasser und 0,2l Fruchtsaftgetränk. Hier kann man mindestens das Sandwich verbessern. Es gibt doch verschiedene Sorten Käse, man kann mal Kräuter, Salat o.ä. mit drauflegen. Auch nicht 5* wert ist das Zimmer. Meines war zwar geräumig und der Balkon schön nutzbar, aber das Mobiliar doch schon älter, der Teppich abgetreten und die Steckdosen mußte man suchen, teilweise waren sie versteckt zB hinter dem Nachtisch auf Scheuerleistenniveau. Im Bad gab es keine einzige Steckdose. Unten am Strand wird gebaut, bald könnte der Meerblick verdeckt sein. Der Garten des Hotels ist hübsch und gemütlich angelegt, dafür hat die Bar eher die Atmosphäre einer Kegelbahn.

Sicherlich keine 5 Sterne!
Zimmer geräumig, jedoch nicht sehr sauber (viel Staub in den Ecken), die Ausstattung schon sehr in Jahre gekommen (Fußboden mit Kratzspuren, viele abgenutzte Ecken)!
Das Essen leider auch nicht der Hit!
Top allerdings die Rezeption, sowie der Service!
Schade, hatten laut Beschreibung deutlich mehr erwartet…
