Nice friendly staff.
The public areas are kept spotless clean but the room cleaning is not as good as I expected. The bed was very comfortable but we asked for a double bed and got 2 singles pushed together.
Food is good but a little repetitive as the menu seems very limited.
On the whole a nice hotel, but starting to look a little dated.

Front desk staff Laura and Gabriela were lovely to deal with. Food was ok but could use more variety. Popcorn at the breakfast buffet??
Drinks were good but you needed an upgrade to get certain drinks made. Room was nice and clean but no air conditioning. Parking 15eu night. Free parking next door but hard to get a spot. Overall a nice quiet hotel with a beautiful view and close to everything if u have a rental car

Loved this hotel! Stunning views from the balcony, brilliant staff, food was pretty good and served warmer than you often get in all inclusive, so that was great. Entertainment in the bar every night. Two pools and a jacuzzi. Rooms were large with comfortable seating and a large telly. Balcony is great. Just 2 draw backs, the beds are quite hard, and there are fans rather than air-conditioning, so the nights can be warm, but that is definitely a price worth paying!

Never stay here. Only one floor has AC. Out of 10 day stay, only 4 dishes out of all meals [all inclusive] were tasty. I'm used to GOOD Portuguese food! This wasn't! Outdated building. Shabby amenities [ripped bathroom towels]. Canceled scheduled activity after ppl showed up for swim fitness class. Open balcony gym located over dining room. So while eating, you can hear the person running on the treadmill because you are in thr same room.

I didn’t like that was no air conditioner and that was unacceptable, dinnind area everybody was swetting and on the walking area, and I had to change room upon arrival because I was assuming every room had air conditioner but I paid xtra for that.
Also entertainment was poor beeing the the hotel is so far from the city they should have better atractions

Our flight was in the evening and we used the option with late check out. Massive plus for this hotel.
We also liked the fact that hotel was asking the guests to refill the bottle with water in the canteen instead of giving a new plastic bottle every day

We chose this hotel because we wanted an \"All Inclusive\" and this certainly was!
Although a little dated in décor we found it to be spotlessly clean. The food was plentiful with a good selection of hot and cold dishes. Red and white wine, sangria, beer, soft drinks including tea and coffee readily available. Our room even had a small kitchenette with kettle, fridge, sink, cutlery, cups saucers and glasses if you wanted to bring your own drinks to your room.
All rooms have a seaview and a pleasant longish walk along the footpath (some parts were quite hilly) take you to Funchal one way and the delightful fishing village the other.

Really great hotel.

We loved our stay at this hotel. We had an annexe room which suited us as the pool and sunbeds were quieter. There was a little bar 3-11pm where the talented barman, Luis, served us great cocktails. Our room was large and clean with a big balcony overlooking the sea. The restaurant in the main hotel was at times very busy but as the tables were not allocated or timed we managed to fit in after the rush. The staff were all polite, friendly and efficient. The wine was served in large carafes and there was bottled water readily available. The food was very good, great choice, well cooked, plenty of it and dishes were replaced quickly as they finished.
The entertainment was okay - good singers and folkdance show.
The shuttle bus to town was useful. We would go in to town on it but not join the scramble to return on it. We had local bus passes so would get the no.2 bus back and walk through the tunnel to Praia Formosa beach.
Although a lot of people did swim in the sea the beach is large pebbles and the under tow in the water not for the feint hearted.

Ideal hotel location, ocean frontage with pretty gardens. Free shuttle bus to Funchal. Staff in all departments helpful and friendly. Food of good quality, fresh and well presented in main restaurant. Italian restaurant on garden level (pre book) also excellent food but feels it needs more subdued lighting, perhaps candles on tables for a more cozy effect. The only down side is the outside pool is unheated and makes swimming out of season more of a trial, than a enjoyment, perhaps they could heat it with solar panels and make it an all year perfect swim. They have certainly listened to past clients as WiFi is all over the hotel and bedrooms and not just the lobby and bar area. Again I fully recommend this hotel as a perfect base for touring the beautiful island of Madeira.

Perfect place to relax and wind down with the sound of the waves. The hotel feels a little cramped but after a day or so it feels more like \"cosy\". There was no animation team which for some would be great but wouldn't suit everyone.

Be prepared to be amazed !!!!

Having visited this \"All Inclusive\" hotel several times I feel qualified to report that it displays amazing qualities.
The hotel, although on the beech would not attract serious sun worshipers but all other aspects of this \"Pestana\" hotel are brilliant...The main feature would have to be the staff. They are totally dedicated to making your stay a wonderful experience. The reception staff, dining room staff and bar staff all worked so hard to make our holiday an experience that will definitely be repeated.
The free \"Shuttle bus\" means that Funchal centre is only a short ride away and if you don't mind some easy walking if you go either way from the hotel you can enjoy the promenade to \"Camara de Lobos\" or Funchal.
Give it a try, you will not be disappointed !!!!

The staff at Petana Ocean Bay were the best !

We were greeted by very competent and friendly staff in all areas of the hotel ,which helped to make our holiday an enjoyable one .Having never been to Madeira before we were most impressed by all aspects of our week there . We would recommend it to others , probably to older persons , although it does help to be fairly fit as it is a very hilly island .

Room extremely clean and comfortable with access to beach view and useful kitchenette. Prompt service from reception staff. Exceptionally good attention from room cleaning staff. Food plentiful and usually good. Accessibility to places nearby eg. shops and local buses is difficult because of steep terrain from the hotel's beachlevel to the main road. Shuttle bus into Funchal was useful but involved a lot of waiting around at both ends of the route and sometimes not enough seats available.

We had an absolutely great time , the rooms were very clean , well maintained , the hotel staff were very polite spoke excellent English and extremely helpful. The food was to a good standard with plenty of variety , choice of meats and wide variety of fruit. Breakfast was well cooked again lots of variety and very well prepared. We had a packing most days to take advantage of the walking , staff helped sort out bus routes and the shuttle bus was great . Evening meals were well prepared and again several various options, only gripe the meat on one occasion could have been warmer . The room we had 411 had great views right on the beach , brilliant setting. Entertainment was varied , the traditional Madeira display and birds of Prey were particularly very good

Great vacation for a reasonable price!

Location, location, location…Five stars wouldn’t be enough. You simply cannot get any better than this. Right on the beautiful beach, not far from Funchal (they have a free shuttle to the city center every hour or so), yet quite isolated and quiet. Every room has a magnificent view of the open ocean. You get incredible views every night of the fantastic sunsets, when sun literally is falling down into the sea right in front of your eyes. Awesome!… All along the beach there is a nice wooden boardwalk, which you can take to walk up the hill in one direction (there is a good supermarket up the hill), and in another direction as well. Good for walking and jogging. Another great advantage of the location: don’t take taxi to the hotel. Instead, take the AIRBUS from the airport. It is very easy to find, the airport is not that big. There is a timetable available, they go every hour or so and cost just 5 euros. So, for the couple you’d pay 10 euros, instead of 40-50 euros for the taxi.

Rooms.Comfortable, with a very large balcony.

The sea temp was very comfortable, not too warm, about 20C. Water in swimming pool was even cooler, so it was quite refreshing a swim. These temps might not be very comfortable to those who prefer swimming in really warm water.

Food. It is an all-inclusive hotel, and the food was good. I wouldn’t mark it ‘excellent’, but the food definitely was good. Variety of meat and fish, lots of salads, good desserts. Soups were bland(to my taste).

I had never stayed in an all inclusive stay hotel before. Imagine my surprise at check in that lunch and afternoon snacks were also included.Also, drinks included as well. If you did not want to go out, there was no need Fantastic choice of food. Previously on holiday me and the family would argue for ages about which restaurant to go to - fish, pizza etc. However, here he choice was amazing - so no arguments!
Staff very helpful. Clean environment. As a triathlete, I found the pool to be a reasonable swim - about 30 meters long so you could get a reasonable swim.Sauna and gym room thrown in. A great place to be.

Madeira May Vacation

We were very pleased with our stay at the Pestana Bay ApartHotel. The room was clean and neat. The food was very good. Although the hotel is not centrally located, you can easily get to Funchal's downtown city center via the free courtesy bus that runs every half hour in the am and every hour in the pm. The staff members were excellent, especially at the front desk and the dining hall.

I would advise to choose beef when on offer, it is outstanding! The hotel is in a quiet location but has free bus transport in and out of Funchal. We had a really nice holiday The food was good the rooms and the hotel generally were kept very clean and tidy and the staff were, without exception, friendly and helpful. As we are old farts we did not get about as much as we should have done although the courtesy bus into town delivered you to a nice market area with lots of shops. There is also a supermarket and shopping centre at the top of the cliffs. Personally as a beer drinker I found that there was not a lot of variety in drinks, and also the entertainment could have been more lively so a week was probably perfect for us As for value for money we had no complaints. Would we return? Probably not but only because pf the limited choice of beer on the island, it's like having you favourite meal time after time, at some stage you will want a change

2nd time of staying here and will do so again.

Stayed here last September and upholstery was shabby but it has all been replaced and redecorated for this year. Another improvement is the introduction of an afternoon snack and ice cream is available at any time. On the whole staff are very friendly and helpful although a certain bar tender is quite grumpy. Most of the staff are the same as last year so it must be a good place to work. We plan to return again next year

We found the hotel to be very good. Clean with excellent helpful and friendly staff. We were on an all inclusive package and found the food to be good quality and quantity, although at times it did lack some imagination. The public areas are a little bit small and the evening entertainment a little limited. Right on a pebble beach. Not a great deal around the hotel, you need to get up the hill, which could be a challenge for some people, but if you walk along the beach and through the tunnel, om top of the cliff there were restuarantes and within easy access of the main shopping area. The main city was less than 15 minutes drive. Would receommend.

The hotel was for the most part was a very nice stay. As an all inclusive it sometimes came across that they were catering for the cheaper set which was a shame as we had all paid our money for a four star hotel. The food was not good (as the rating of the hotel implies) I think as all inclusive they just dish up what was more like bog standard canteen food and the beverages were beer (which was good) but cheap brands of spirits and wine. Sangria from a box. The quality was not good as very much bulk buying of cheap items and the deserts were poor - due to the ingredients used. On arrival we found the staff a little off and looking very tired and fed up with their job but when the shift changed the next day it was better. Maybe they had had a hard week! In the bar Carlos was particularly cheerful and a good barman, great with the guests. They supplied a shuttle to town which was a great surface, had fantastic views, very clean and despite looking a bit 70s was a pleasant hotel. The only issue was little things that were a bit dated like expecting us to rent an adaptor (!) and the wifi was only available in the reception area. Beach was very stony so take some rubber shoes. Then its great. Water fab.

We found the location of the hotel very remote. Thank goodness for the free bus service to Funchal. The pool area was brilliant as were all the staff. The rooms comfortable and the food was of good quality. Overall a very pleasant stay.. We never recommend any holiday accommodation to our friends as every one has different standards or expects different things.

the hotel is not too big. All the rooms have sea views. a quiet area but the shuttle bus is available 12 hours a day.
food was of good quality although a little repetative. Availabiltiy of soft drinks at all times including water.
the upholstery on the chairs in the longe/entertainment area could do with a clean but general standard very high.
not an area to bring teenagers too but toddlers would be fine.
swimming pool was never out of my depth and again very clean.

It was our second visit to Pestana Bay having enjoyed our first visit so much.
the hotels location is outside the main town of Funchal , but the free regular coaches to Funchal does not isolate it.
On both occasions we have had a third floor room with lovely views over pebble beach and sea.The swimming pool and facilities are good. Also meals provide were good, giving an option to try local cuisine.

I beleive this hotel does not warrant being classed as a 4*+, There is no air con in the public areas of the hotel, this made the hotel very uncomfortable to sit in in the evenings. The head waiter was a miserable person and spoke only to his staff and during our seven day stay did not greet one guest at meal times.

I have compared my stay at the Pestana Bay with stays at other all-inclusive 4* hotels. Having written this, it did not spoil my holiday

This is the first time my friends and I stayed in the Pestana Ocean Beach hotel. The service was very good, the rooms were comfortable and clean, the staff was good, nothing was too much trouble.Easy walk to Funchal. All in all we are thinking of going again next year.

2 problems - food is always luke warm and the hotel is a very long walk from Funchal but there is a free shuttle bus.
Whilst adjacent to the beach, please be aware it is a stone beach.
The hotel is probably aimed at an older age group so very quiet.

We chose the Pestana Bay for a reasonably priced break. Unfortunately the tunnel linking the hotel to the next bay was closed and likely to be so for some time to come due to landslip. This made getting out and about more difficult unless you liked a lot of uphill walking/steps. The hotel bus is great during day time but taxis are expensive and it was this or a long walk in the evenings. We were very disapponted with the evening food selection- everything in sauces and the noisy cafeteria like ambience of the restaurant. Having experienced a five star half board package in Rhodes last autumn this struggles to be four star. Having said that we loved the island and found the hotel clean and comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful.

Hotel great , but problems finding it in hire car. No directions on website and is not well signposted. Local bus from the airport or a taxi much easier.

Facilities very good - well worth 4 star rating. All rooms have sea view with balcony. Kitchenette spotless and has all items needed (except a corkscrew as we found)

We stayed on B + B basis and there was a good selection of foods. Cooked food not always as hot as it might be, mainly due to people leaving off the covers.

Good access throughout the hotel for any wheelchair users (and 2 lifts)

Bar area very comfortable also TV area with reading materials .

Themed evening buffets every night . We ate out so didn't sample this. Entertainment 6 nights per week seemed a bit limited as by the time we had been out to eat and came back, the entertainment had finished (by about 9.30)

Hotel at one end of Funchal area and not much around this apart from a few bars/restaurants. Hotel courtesy bus into Funchal finished at 6pm so taxis needed after that. Walk into Funchal takes about 45 mins.

Went to a dinner show at Casino and had taxi back - fairly expensive. (not late -- about 10.30)

Guests were invited to presentation about holiday options and offerred gift for attending. Much longer than advised and seemed like timeshare although a bit different and called Vacation club. Went to presentation -- said no to offer but still got gift. (casino visit)

Location of hotel only real issue.

Good Beach Location

Good Beach Location, being outside of Funchal makes car driving easier with direct access onto main roads. Clean, tidy and well equipped. Friendly and helpful staff. Nice garden and pool area. Good to have beach or pool option with children with good visibility to both from the pool area.

Hotel was perfectly adequate for our needs. Staff at reception very helpful, nice pool area. Couldnt make out what other Expedia reviewers were referring to as nearby oil depot so didnt spoil our view at all. Room overlooking a spectacular view out to sea. Only disappointment was the food at the hotel, we only had B&B but use of some fresh produce (rather than tinned) would have been nice, still plenty of good restaurants within a short walk. Madeira itself was beautiful thoroughly recommend Funchal the capital for a visit, especailly the cable car ride up into Monte.

Pendant 20 jours les choix chaud ont été servis tièdes, voir froids, sauf un ou deux soirs. En général la nourriture était répétitive et pas très savoureuse. Nous avons constaté un manque d'organisation et de supervision lors du service des repas. Les cuisiniers devraient être tenus d'utiliser des recettes standardisées et vérifier le goût et la température des aliments avant chaque repas. Nous n'avons jamais observer qui que ce soit du personnel vérifier les aliments avant ou durant les repas.

Le petit déjeuner offraient un bon choix d'aliments.

Le service à la chambre à été aussi déficient. Nous sommes de ces clients qui ne nécessitent pas de faire la chambre chaque jour (changement de serviettes et de draps). Malgré notre peu de besoins de service, à trois reprises nous avons manqué de serviettes et malgré nos efforts il a été difficile de corriger le problème. De plus la salle de bain ( moisissures autour du bains) et la chambre auraient besoin de rafraîchissement.
Nous ne pourrions recommandé cet Hôtel.

Utsikten var magisk. Personalen håller världsklass alltid glada trots att de sliter. Toaletter vid pooler slitna. Pooler skulle behöva fräschas upp. Bra om man har en inomhus pool som kan användas året om.

Das Hotel ist dem Alter entsprechend, die Brandung ist ziemlich laut hat mich aber nicht wirklich gestiert weil ich gut schlafe .

Sehr laut, alte und teilweise schmutzige Anlage. Polstermöbel und Teppiche sehr schmutzig, Toiletten auch nach Desinfektion stanken stark nach Urin. Traumhafte Lage und meist sehr nettes Personal.Einzige Ausnahme eine junge Dame von der Rezeption und ein Zimmermädchen die als Ersatz am Wochenende ausgeholfen hat. Poollandschaft schön und sauber.
Würde definitiv nicht nochmal buchen.

Wir waren das zweite mal in einem Hotel der Pestana Gruppe und wurden nicht enttäuscht!
Das Hotel haben wir bewusst ausgewählt weil es etwas außerhalb des Zentrums liegt und direkt am Stand ist. Was die Beste Entscheidung war!
Wir hatten eine Junior Suite im 7ten Stock mit tollen Ausblick, das Zimmer war sehr groß und wurde täglich gereinigt.
Direkt vor dem Hotel sind Steine am Strand aber keine 2 Minuten entfernt ist toller Sandstrand. In das Zentrum ist es etwas zu Gehen (fast eine Stunde wenn man gemütliche geht) aber es gibt einen kostenlosen Hotel Shuttel, den wir oft genutzt haben. Auch die Öffentlichen Busse und der Flughaben Bus fährt direkt vor dem Hotel weg. Unweit vom Hotel gibt es ein großes Einkaufszentrum und Geschäfte, Restaurants, Bars usw.
Essen und Trinken war vollkommen ok, wir hatten etwas Bedenken wegen der teils negativen Bewertungen aber das ist unberechtigt. Es war für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei.
Das Personal war sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit!
Wir hatten tolle 10 Tage und können das Hotel wirklich weiter empfehlen und würden das nächste mal wieder dieses Hotel nehmen.
