I've stayed in many hostels throughout my European travels. This is the worst hostel for cleanliness and condition of the property. To be clear, staff regularly clean spaces and the kitchen and women's washroom are hygenic. Gender neutral washrooms were less clean. However, throughout the property there is SO MUCH DUST. I had an allergic reaction to the dust which caused my face/eyes to swell. There is also an obvious smell of dirtiness throughout the building. The stairs down to the women-only washroom broke, but were left open with only a handwritten warning on a sheet of paper at the bottom of the stairs. It was actively dangerous.

Bunks were basic with no privacy curtain or light (I knew this going into it though). There is little to no ventilation in the dorm -- The temperature became hot enough to wake me up sweating both nights.

Staff seemed nice -- it's very obvious that they live and work in the hostel. It felt a bit like intruding on someone else's house share. I did not join in on any of the free meals, but they sounded great.

The price is fantastic, but compared to all other hostels I've stayed in, the cleanliness/condition of the property is lackluster. I'll definitely stay elsewhere next time.

Good for the position - Museums, Hyde Park, High Street Kensington - all within walking distance.
In addition to breakfast, the first 30 to sign up on a list can claim free dinner.
Not really impressed by some of the staff, and although the place can be busy with some guests not being particularly attentive to cleanliness themselves, the place could be way cleaner.

They don't have an elevator, but the staff helped me with my luggage, so I can't complain. They offer free dinner (on my stay it was vegan beans, salad, and rice) and free breakfast (eggs cooked for you upon request).

They have a dedicated bathroom for women which is great.

The only mess was that the key they gave me at checkin didn't correspond to my bed number. The locker was stuck under the bed. When I came back from theatre in the evening, someone else put her stuff on my bed. I had to go check with the reception and they pointed me to another unused bed. All the changes caused a longer check-out time.

Wonderful people, and the option of a free meal in the evening (subject to numbers signing up) was completely unexpected!!

Courtyard area is beautiful.

Visited in the middle of a heatwave so wasn't really able to take advantage of a lot of the facilities because I felt so tired! But the sound of people playing table tennis below as I cooled down inside made me smile :-)

This was a good stay, convenient and handy. The feel with a double room is a little like a b&b, with helpful staff and very simple rooms.

The main negative is a very noisy pipe running in the room which seemed to be linked to people having showers, although the nose finishes at midnight.

The communal areas are nice, and it served a tofu and potato curry for free evening meals (you have to get on the list so maybe email in about this as it fills up fast.

The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. Going by out stay the private rooms are at the top, so accessibility could be an issue (steep stairs) ...

Overall, I would definitely come again, it has a nice vibe and for the price and location, it's really good.

Saint James Hostel

Saint James hostel is a welcoming place to stay. It gives you the feel of a family home, with its very friendly and helpful staff who connect with guests. The hostel offers free breakfast and free dinner. They organise events and games to entertain. They even have a happiness manager! Tosh does a great job whether he is cooking dinner, making popcorn or organising a game for the guests. I recommend trying it if visiting London.

I came to check in and this was all fine. The only issue i found was the place had things dumped everywhere and it was not tidy. Once checked in i was given a tour of the building and told the rules. The guy who showed me around was pleasent and explained most things well. On the tour the place seemed very untidy and had a weird feeling about it. My dorm room was on the top floor which was very unsafe to access as the staircase was steep and there were no handrails as you reach the top where the staircase starts to spiral to the door. Trying to open a door when on a spiral staircase with nothing to hold is not the safest thing i can think of and this made me nervous.
Upon returning to the dorm room that night i found the flooring was very loud and can annoy guests (it annoyed me while trying to get some rest with the sound of suitcases and shoes keeping me awake). Another part of this trip that made me feel uncomfortable was that around 3am one member of the dorm returned with a friend and turned the light on. This was on for 30 minutes while they both were sat on thr bed opposite mine staring at me. They thrn left after making lots of noise on the noisy floor when taking out their luggage. Upon leaving the hostel the next morning i went downstairs to return the key. I was told i couldnt have my £10 deposit back unless i went and took off the bedding i had used. Is this not a service you pay for for one of these establishments? This was never pointed out in my tour.......

This is a family owned and run hostel that has been generationally passed down. It is affordable, well run, you always have hot water, and the staff are very welcoming and helpful and keep the bathrooms clean (which is quite a task!). In addition, there are lockers under the beds where you can store your stuff (just bring a lock), the breakfast is good and predictable and there is an optional dinner you can sign up for every evening. There is a football match on nearly every evening to boot (in season of course)! It is only a 5 min walk from the tube (Stamford Bridge is only 2 stops away!) and restaurants abound. A couple of things you won't know from booking here: there is a 10 pound refundable deposit for the room key (bring cash), bring a towel (but a small travel towel on Amazon) and soap/shampoo with you (or buy it at the grocery store when you arrive), and they have deals on weekly rates of you book with them directly and you don't start your stay on the weekend. Overall, I'd go back in a heartbeat. Next time you travel to London, don't stay at a hotel, support a local family that is doing good work in the city. Stay at St James Backpackers!

Sadly got bites from bed bugs. First and last time here. The bunk bed was basic but creaked everytime the girl above moved. Couldn’t sleep because of this. I stayed here as I was going to a work event in the evening and just needed a place to lay my head. The bed bug bites were upsetting to say the least.

Only one small fridge and pretty strict rules meant I had in-date food thrown out twice. Kitchen is also closed at meal times for staff to make food for guests. And when it opens back up is at the discretion of staff on the day, they dont follow the set times.

Bathrooms often flooded, and missing toilet paper.

Rooms dont have fans which is an issue in the summer. Lock boxes under the bed are too small for bags.

Staff were ok. Polite and attentive, but not particularly friendly (to me anyway).

Didn’t like the fact that reception allowed homeless people with just a plastic bag of clothes book in at 2am in the morning. Two nights in a row the whole room was woken up by drunk residents. One was aggressive, the other was just inconsiderate.

people at hostel very social. some people were weird, but that's everywhere. the female dorm was clean and the fellow stayers were extremely supportive. free breakfast was like reheated heinz beans, hotdog wieners boiled, eggs, pancakes, toast, cereal. 7pm dinner was free if you signed up early enough. there is a female only bathroom n shower. everything was clean. no mold. no laundry though. close to main attractions. wifi hit or miss lowkey. staff was sweet. very active and social at night. the age range was from 20s to 30s, but there were many older stayers as well. There is a cat, the cat was cute. make sure you have shower shoes. ask for the bottom bunk. clean plates and there is a fridge.

Overall, this was good value for the price and the hostel is in a great location - close to the tube and there is a grocery store and multiple restaurants down the street. My one complaint was that when I took a shower, the drain was clogged and I was immediately standing in 4 inches of dirty water.

Future guests should note the following:
- The all-female dorm is two floors above the all-female bathroom. All other bathrooms are any gender.
- There are no privacy curtains on the bunks
- Dorms do not have quiet/curtesy hours posted
- The kitchen is small and closed when the staff are cooking dinner. Dinner is limited to the first 30 people who sign up each morning. So if you have plans to make your own dinner, you can’t use the kitchen during normal dinner hours
- Guests are not allowed to store cooked food in the fridge, so you can’t keep leftovers
- The communal area is pretty small for the number of guests that can fit into the hostel. The hostel was not at full capacity when I was there but I often couldn’t find a place to sit and eat. Although in the summer, there are many seats to sit out in the garden
- Each bunk is assigned a lock box for your items that rolls under the bed. I liked this system and the boxes are fairly large.
- My bunk did not have a bedside light or shelf

It was a night from hell to forget. Too noisy, people were slamming their rooms' doors all night long, talking and laughing loud. People show no respect to others and there were no regulations or instructions to tackle that. No lockers to store your valuable items, so you have to keep your eyes wide open all the time. It is filthy, such a horrible place, with disrespectful guests, loud music during the entire night against the by-Law, bad professional taking care of the business. The Receptionist was using alcohol during working hours, didn`t seem to be working, but enjoying a night in a club with drunk and drug users; Allowed marijuana abuse in enclosed areas. Said people could listen to loud music as long as they wanted. My wife thought it was okay spending one night in a hostel, but bad decision, no common sense on putting a woman alone in a dorm with lots of men part of the same group, no female whatsoever in the dorm but 3 men. Firstly, they should have dorms for female, and if they share the dorm, they should put more people of the same gender together. The male guests slept in their underwear, almost nude, disrespectful, drunk, lots of bottle of liquor all over the room. That is insane. Expedia tried to reach them, but the hostel refused to answer the calls.
My wife had to spend practically the entire night in the reception waiting Expedia to make them change the dorm, she couldn’t go to any other hotel because they were all sold out. The only availability was for hotel charging over $300.
Not only she was frustrated, tired, she was in danger by herself with closed doors with 3 other guys who apparently spent the day drinking.
I am sharing here hoping someone can reconsider staying somewhere else.

Living in a hostel, sleeping on bunk beds, share your daily life with always incoming and outgoing people can be really hard, but SJB makes it as pleasurable as they can, they are there for you, you can count on them, and they will do their best to support you, nice lounge, warm welcoming, warm big dinner, and on a hard day, you can always chose watching Friends or How I met your mother on a big TV screen, instead of going out for a busy city tour, all staff members are a part of a good team, and I would recommend Will as a marketing face of the hostel, as he is a fantastic person. The location is good near the underground station and the bus stop station. Usually its common the breakfast is freeamong the hostel but this hostel dinner is free not unlike other hostel not dinner free. Comfortable bed and a good range of ameneties. When checking in there is a GBP20 fee which was not advised upon booking. If you pay by card (which you do if you are unaware to bring cash) there is a fee you do not get back. When leaving you will get the money back in cash which is quite annoying if you are about to leave the country.

Our first night the staff bent over backwards to be helpful, but we had a terrible night’s sleep because the other guests were very loud and the room was so hot. Plus, the closest bathroom facilities were at least two flights of stairs down. Even at 4:30 AM, my husband had to traverse 4 flights down to find an available toilet. His health condition necessitated a change in accommodations, so we kindly explained our situation, hoping for a refund so we could go elsewhere. However, the hostel would not make an exception to their refund policy. Instead, they offered a room with a private bathroom and charged us a little extra for it. We were happy with that solution, but clearly the staff was not. From that point on, we were met with cold stares and rudeness by the young people who man all the services there. Things like requests for towels were ignored until I stood at the desk and waited for them myself, after much argument and protest from the staff. They made it very uncomfortable for us. The facilities are mediocre at best, so definitely not worth the cost. We will never stay there again, and in good conscience we could not recommend it to anyone else.

Reasonable price and stay

Pro: Nice area to stay, public transit nearby, very cheap price, with basic breakfast and dinner (portion is small), common space is cozy and nice

Cons: too noisy (party at 1am at the common area), people talking loudly, lack of 4-bed room for female traveller, 8 bed room is very crowded. If you have quiet and nice roommates, you will have happy time. If not, it can be a problem!

They didn’t have any towels because they were “overbooked” the sheets, beds, and pillows were very dirty. Don’t count on the breakfast because it was extremely minimal. The staff were incredibly rude, except for a select few. You can tell that they aren’t happy to be there. There are also very creepy people that hang around the hostel, just be wary of that.

The 2 receptionists were totally unfriendly with grumpy face made me very uncomfortable. I was put in the 4th floor no left and stairs were totally discofotable. I was in a hurry for meeting so I didn't check the bed but when I came at night I found the bedding very dirty with hair of the previous guests, the were another 2 beds empty in the room but also bedding of them were extremely dirty. Next day the room mate left and luckily they changed here bedding so I moved to her bed and told the receptionist I moved and asked them to change the bedding for the next guest but they did not and I sow another victem sleep on the bed after me! You have to go 2 or 3 floors down to use the toilet!!. I paid extra for the 'free' denner but they didn't allow me and asked I should have signed up for it!!. And so many things. It was a really horrible experience I hope no one will have to go through.
