The hotel was exactly what I needed for my stay. It was very local to the metro and Nord station. Had shops in walking distance. I was travelling solo so appreciated how safe the hotel felt, with needing a room key to enter the hotel and the floor for your room. The staff were friendly and polite. The room was spacious and well equipped.

Friendly and very interesting hotel

This is an old hotel full of character. Our room was small but comfortable. I liked the ambience and the staff at reception were very friendly. Breakfast was very good.

A bit awkward to find down the small street, obviously to no fault of theirs my phone died and I was left to ask a taxi driver where abouts it was quite late on, confortable beds, good breakfast and a decent gym for a hotel, good location for Brussels Noord train station and the tootbus sightseeing stop is a 2 minute walk which i would recommend to anyone interested in seeing Brussels during their stay, reception area is very nice but rest of the hotel is pretty dated

A very nice experience. The room was very spacious, the bed was very comfortable, the TV was placed at a very comfortable spot (visible from bed, but not too close to disrupt sleep), and the bath tub was really nice!

The location was great, very easy to get to/from the airport and train station.

Also, a very nice location to have a nice long walk around all the city main views

It is an old property. It has been refurbished, but it remains an old property. Wafer thin connecting doors in rooms let you hear anything next doors. Showers in bathtubs very clumsy to use, clumsy partitions let water onto the floor, difficult to calibrate to the right temperature. Big rooms and bathrooms, but dark. Mirror in bathroom very dark. Very good location, near Brussels Nord. I wouldn't stay here again.

Hotel Des Colonies, Awful experience, Not recommended.

The Reception staff were extremely rude, unhelpful and disinterested throughout our stay.

One individual in particular became very aggressive, argumentative and intimidating when asked for the twin beds to be set up as a double bed. Even though we had booked and paid for a double bed and that is how one of the two rooms had been set up anyway.

The rooms are tired and the reception area was dark and smelt stuffy and unclean.

The breakfast was very poor quality and tasteless. The staff at breakfast clearly did not want to be there and did the bare minimum.

There is no way I would recommend this hotel and will actively advise against using it.

Great location, value for money, and convenient for a short trip. I stayed there for 3 nights and had everything that’s necessary for the trip, restaurants, shops and the metro station is next to the hotel so it’s easy to move around, like 15-20 minute walk from the city center. Would stay here again just keep it mind it’s an old hotel.

Great location 5 minutes walk from Garenoord (north train station). Easy walk to Grand Place/Grote Market. Art deco hotel with history, very cool. Helpful staff. Building construction nearby makes the area a bit dirty but it was not noisy. Great breakfast buffet!

Hotel des Colonies is close to everything. Brussels Central Station and Brussels North is only few minutes walk. Close to a shopping street. The hotel is quite old but the bed is very comfortable which is more important for me. The price is very affordable. Lift isn’t working during our stay so we have to use stairs. The staff at the reception were very accommodating and helpful. The check in and check out is very quick and straightforward without complications.

The person that helped me do the check in was nice and friendly. However there was another person later when I went to ask for a hair dryer he was rude and told me there was non available but he didn’t even looked i went and asked one more time to a diff ent person and he was nice and did go and looked for one but there was non available. I also got the wrong room the restroom had no hand soap or lotion but it does say it includes toiletries. Not sure if that only regrets to the shampoo. Location was great but I will not be saying there again or recommending it.

Loved the unique features of the property and the historical significance. Our room was clean, comfortable and the hotel is safe. The staff were helpful and multilingual.
Slight negative was that there wasn't a mini fridge in our room.
The subway system in Brussels is unsafe which is not the hotel's fault. Guests should be very careful with their valuables and be weary of the people that push behind you to get through the barriers for free.

Only good about this hotel is the location. Not far from the Noord station and close to metro, shopping street. The drainer in the shower didn’t work properly, basically was flooded and took hours to drain. Carpet in the room needs a clean up. Arrived one hour before check-in and was turned away, they even didn’t look if there was a room available which any other hotel would do.

Amazing hotel!

Our stay was amazing! I had requested for a room with a bathtub as we were traveling for our honeymoon and they actuality upgraded us! That was so thoughtful and very much appreciated. The hotel staff was very kind and helpful as well. Highly recommend this place of you're going to be in Brussels.

Every door squeaked loudly and slammed. When management was asked about this they said no other person had mentioned this and they never heard the doors squealing and slamming. Don't plan on any sleep with all the squealing and slamming doors at all hours. It was a nightmare. There are tons of other hotels in the area, check them out. I would not recommend this hotel if you want some rest on your trip to Brussels.

Old hotel that is being renovated. Lot of potential. The room was comfortable but we didn't have a shower, just a bathtub. The sink was blocked, the water would not go through. But despite that, the bed was comfortable, the breakfast delicious and fulfilling and wi-fi was working fine.

The hotel waa decent , but what's on the pictures on hotels.com look different to how the hotel looks inside when you see it in person.. a lot of wear and tear some of the plug in sockets felt like they were coming apart . The wall paper in our room just made it look so outdated . And notice the curtain had a hole , also my friend and I had a bottle of wine we ask if they could open for us, but they told us they gave the corkscrew to another guest and they never returned in, but there is a bar down stairs , how do they open their wine bottles? And we even took the wine bottle downstairs but they could not help. The shower is very tiny .. I have stayed in a 2 start hotel with bigger shower space. One positive thing i can say is the area where the hotel is situated is good .. it is very central .. close to the metro .. if you are not too fussy like I am then this place is for you

Location was the best. Amenities not great. Web site gives misleading information. The gym has extra cost 10 euro) and almost al, the equipment is not working! Walls are too thin so you hear a lot of noise from people next door or from outside. It is supposed to be non-smoking but some people smoke in theeir room and complaining about it does not help- staff think you are exaggerating

Whereas the lobby is not too bad everything goes down from there. The journey starts with the lift, which is very old and slow and continues with the rooms thats seems to have been untouched for the last 40 years with peeling paint, non working heating, uncomfortable beds, etc.
This is NOT a hotel for professionals!

I didn't even get to state my name upon checkin before being interrupted and asked for my ID. I was then promptly ignored until prompted to fill out forms. Fortunately the front desk attendend changed without comment in the middle of the process to someone very pleasant.
The property seems to have been 'modernised' the last time 20+ years ago. Instructions for the antique elevator are provided in French and Dutch. Seems nonsensical for a temperamental elevator that gets stuck from simply touching the doors too early in between floors.
No hairdryer in the rooms, no bedside outlets and the breakfast is OK quality at best. Canned fruit salad...I have had better in a Motel one.
Overall the property has a nice old timey charm, which unfortunately ends in the lobby, and is about 30€ per Night too expensive in its current state.

The hotel is in need of refurbishment but has great character. It is clean and the staff very friendly. The room was comfortable but the shower in the bath did not have a bracket so had to be hand held. It then tended to flood the floor!
It is slightly out of town in a quiet location close to the train station, buses, trams and sight-seeing bus. About 10-15 minutes walk to Grande Place.
Although in need of redecoration, the hotel is good value for money and in a good location for sight-seeing.

The wifi may be free but it was almost nonexistent. The room had no coffee-making facilities, no haridryer (apparently I could have gone down to reception to borrow one - it my nightclothes or in a towel after my shower?). The TV or remote didn't work. Breakfast was good but I was charged 10 Euros. (Colleagues paid 10 Euros if paid for when booking).

The hotel had everything we need. It was modest and could use some decorative updates. It was one block from a metro stop and two blocks from the train. Since we were there to see our daughter who was a few metro stop away that was very nice. We also used the train to travel to several other cities in Belgium and that was very handy. The hotel breakfast had a wide variety of items. There were some nice restaurants near by and it was a 20 minute walk to the Grand Place.

Fine, but expect quirks

This place was... fine. Location wise it was perfect for me given that I was at a conference at the Crown Plaza. It was also walkable from North Station and spitting distance from a subway stop, although the immediate neighborhood was a bit sterile. It was also walkable to the Grand Plaza and other tourist areas to the south, although that was more like 20 minutes away. Otherwise it was clean and safe and the service was... fine. But there was one clerk at the front desk who, upon me making inquiry, immediately turned his back to summon someone else. And the someone else, although very nice, usually gave me appallingly bad directions (this happened twice). Also, architecturally, the place was a bit strange: part contemporary European, part medieval, with a bit of Florida thrown into the interior design... It was a little jarring, as was the shelf ledge overhanging the head of the bed... But otherwise it was a perfectly reasonable place to stay.

Convenient, but not so nice

Took 3 days here for business. Older hotel, and a bit run down. Minimal amenities (no clock in the room, for example). Old fixtures and old style bathroom. Neighborhood is convenient for Brussels and for the train, but lots of homeless people and some sketchy characters. Bed was ok but not great. Wifi was good off-hours but slowed down a lot in the evenings. If it is a much cheaper option then it might be worth while, but there are a lot of better spots in Brussels.

The reception people always very nice. The breakfast less impressing, crowded and dishes on the tables after the guest leave so as not enough space have to eat breakfast at dirty tables with old dishes. asked for a teacup but they do not want to give them. Well skip the breakfast and then no problems.

The hotel is old, but in a quirky way. It's quiet, close to some EU facilities (and the comic book museum :-), and reasonably comfortable and clean. If you look for luxury and many amenities, this is not for you. If you look for a simple hotel, this is adequate. The free Wi-Fi was fast and reliable.

Hotel close to city centre

Overall the staff where excellent but the room although clean needed some maintenance.
For example the door handle was loose & the show was not working properly.
Also the paint work on the wall was staring to peel & it would have been nice to have a kettle in the room and have the opportunity to make some tea. The breakfast was good & the staff as always were very helpful but the hotel is starting to look tired and could do with some brightening up.

The room was very small, no coffee maker, no wash clothes, there is no shuttle service available though one is advertised. The hotel had us booked for 2 rooms not one...so check reservation carefully. Few there spoke good enough English to make asking questions comfortable. Not very accessible for the handicapped. Grand Place is not a 15 minute walk but a 10 minute cab ride. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!

Room was clean, but didn't smell very fresh. Just 1 free plug socket, for which I had to move the desk for access. Mattresses were fairly soft, which I like. Hotel is quiet, breakfast was good. It's close to the city centre and to Bruxelles Nord train station with direct links to airport.
