We had an amazing stay at this hotel! 🏨✨ The location is simply the best in Amsterdam—close to everything yet peaceful and charming. The staff were excellent—so friendly, welcoming, and always ready to help with a smile. Everything was spotlessly clean, well taken care of, and made us feel right at home. I stayed in this hotel 5/2023 and absolutely loved it! My room was spacious & beautiful, felt luxurious, & had an exceptionally nice bathroom. So, I booked for a 2 night stay May 2025. Completely different experience this time - small room, tiny bathroom w/ a shower I could barely stand up in (I’m 5’ 1”) with a sloping ceiling in the tiny shower. The sink was located outside of the shower/toilet room in the bedroom, INSIDE of a cabinet that did not have retracting doors. The room felt like a college dormitory (room 202), aesthetically, spatially, and design-wise it was definitely not what I was expecting based upon my stay in 2023. Based on my most recent stay, I would likely choose a different hotel. Sadly, they are no longer using the cute little robot to bring food to patrons in the bar either. Sometimes change is good, other times not at all.

I liked almost everything about this property. I had two issues. One, the glasses in the bathroom were glass. That is very unsafe because some of the time you are in the bathroom you are barefoot. If the glass fell, and it is not hard to see how that could happen, you would probably cut your foot. Two, the containers of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel in the shower were arranged in a way that it was difficult to get sufficient amounts out of the container, which was a nuisance.

Wow! What a find! A delightful hotel with amazing, welcoming staff. I usually stay in central Amsterdam but this is just a couple of stops on the metro and a short walk from the De Pijp metro station and sooooo much nicer. Highly recommended.

Nice hotel facilities and rooms but low in service

I decided to give the hotel a second after having a first bad experience. This time was definitely better but the hotels service continues to fail in my opinion. The rooms are nice, but hotel breakfast was understaffed several days, which led to me not been able to order anything for breakfast in spite of waiting in the breakfast area for more than an hour, my order was never taken. At check in i got offered a complimentary check in drink on what the hotel said \"on the house\" to later realize that i was actually charged for the drink. Not a big deal, but worth double checking with the staff whether you will be charged by what they offer or not :)

The rooms are pretty, simple, newly renovated which is very good.

in general for the prices, the hotel could deliver better service in my opinion.

Nice renewed hotel with potential for improvement

The hotel is entirely renovated, which is a great perk. The rooms are pretty nice, very simple but nice, though lacking a lot of things that you would expect from a four star hotel, and especially a Marriott hotel. The breakfast buffet Was very average, but more on the lower end, I feel that I have been to plenty of hotels of lower star rating with much better quality buffet breakfast. The breakfast items you were able to order were tasty.

Service at the hotel was a different to most hotels I have been to. Had several issues with the cleaning that wasn’t done properly any of the days I stayed at the hotel. I found several hairs in the shower that were not coming from me, but they never were taken away my entire stay of six days. The room that I got assigned was also connected to two different rooms with no Soundproofing, which meant you could hear other guests doing everything as if they were right next to you and that affected my sleep quite a bit. When i asked the reception about it, they told me to put a towel to block the noise which felt strange. No toiletries are provided and the hotel reception doesn’t seem to know what they have and they don’t. Had several issues with my reservation and my card getting charged 4 times for the same reservation. Still waiting for a reply from the hotel manager regarding all the issues I encountered. In general a hotel with a lot of potential but lacking better management and procedures to accommodate international guests

Excellent property. Superb breakfast. Great location. Only issue was that the room was not quiet. We kept thinking the window was open hearing the street noise. We also had an adjoining door to our room to another room. You could hear absolutely everything, yes, absolutely everything. Unfortunate for the noise. Otherwise great place.

small, quaint, quiet, close to museum, playing and easy to get around the city on the tram

The hotel is being renovated starting this Monday through I think 18 March, but we went ahead and booked our reservation for next winter holiday

So glad I booked here and not right in the heart city.
This location is near the museums, electric tram stop, and GREAT dining options.
The room was incredibly comfortable though a bit dark to see outlets, even with all the lights on. The room darkening drapes were perfect for getting a good night of sleep. Bed was comfortable.
A great cup of coffee in the morning actually brewed by a real person and not out of one of those gosh awful machines I’m finding everywhere in Europe.
I would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I just completed a stay at this property and it was wonderful! The staff were professional and very accommodating; they even helped us with figuring out how to navigate the city. There’s a tram stop right outside the entrance that will take you straight to the center city and lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance. We will definitely stay here again!

One of my favorite hotels. Each room is different - we loved ours! The inside is charming and a perfect blend of modern and vintage. The staff were all wonderful and the location is excellent as well. There is a major tram stop right in front. I would love to stay here again.

We decided to stay at the College Hotel for a celebratory birthday weekend. The staff we welcoming and did help prior to our arrival to make the weekend special. However the execution fell a little short. For example presenting a birthday cake in the delivery box could have been put on a plate!
Breakfast buffet was very add hoc - food was not replenished, dirty crockery and service was poor. We went out for breakfast for the rest of our stay.
The bedrooms were adequate our room (207)was dark and only had a small window which offered no view and you had to stand on tip toe to see out. By the end of our 4 night stay I found it depressing and dark. The other members of our party liked their rooms.
I would stay here again but I think there are improvements that could be made

The receptionist staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were incredibly dusty and the standard room was very impractical with iron mongery that is super noisy to use, poor lighting and not even bathrobes. Also pillows were awful.

The bartenders were terrible. Worst drinks I've ever had. Ordered a dry martini with a twist and rather than saying they can't make it (because they didn't have vermouth) they tried covering it with simple syrup. None of our drinks were good. Stick to beer, not cocktails.

Also breakfast was fine but not great. Very few tables to sit at.

Upgrades are not always better!

Staff at check-in was very friendly and said I had been upgraded in room category, which is always a feel good factor. Little did I know, I was getting a room under the eaves of the building, tucked behind the lift shaft and with the least amount of natural light possible!

The room was spacious, and I did have a small seating area, but when I saw other rooms with floor to ceiling windows, this felt like a downgrade and claustrophobic.

The room was fit for purpose, tidy and clean to an extent. The amenities provided in the bathroom were all opened and used, which made it feel like the room had not been thoroughly cleaned in times of COVID. I must say the bed was extremely comfortable. But the room lacked sockets for charging, specially on the bedside. Breakfast was €22 per person, which made it feel a bit too expensive, but their breakfast spread looked like an above standard breakfast offering.

Overall, the stay was ok and I would recommend this hotel if you want something slightly away from the touristy areas. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't offer anything to make up for the issues with the room, but at least the staff were extremely apologetic.

Liked the location - tram across the street. Otherwise, disappointing. Had to change room because nothing worked- TV, phone, safe.
Very dark - not enough lighting. The new room was dusty. The only good experience was the bed. The phone’s battery was low so kept beeping. The staff were pleasant and tried to rectify the complaints.
Would not recommend as there are plenty of other hotels in the area

Lovely hotel lovely staff maybe needs a bit tlc

Having stayed at the college hotel about 3 years ago we were really looking forward going back this time. When we arrived we were given a room with no window (well there was a window but it was so high up you couldnt see out of it) which we werent too keen on so we went to ask if there was another room available. The girl on the desk was very helpful and got us another room. The room was better but needed a wee bit tlc the socket for the lamp was hanging off the wall (whichi told reception about and it was fixed in the morning) and some of the paint on the walls was chipping off and the carpet had a stain on it. Overall though the hotel is lovely and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

More form over function

The building was beautiful, but I had the feeling that (in at least my room) the rooms were not well thought out or tested. There were a few pain points that I didn't bother to address but it would have been nice not to have had to deal with.

Lights: There wasn't much lighting in the room, so coming back at night occasionally had me with my cell phone out to use as a flashlight. One of the two lights in the bathroom was burnt out. Their switches didn't seem to control one of the lights, and it didn't have a knob to turn it off manually so I ended up having to unplug it. Additionally, there was another light in the room that was unplugged and also didn't have a switch to turn it on or off.

There wasn't an outlet near the bed, so my phone had to be charged across the room.

The room didn't have a remote for the TV nor were there any controls on the TV itself so it was unusable.

The breakfast was good, but it was 22 euro so it made no sense to eat there unless you had twelve cups of espresso and seven slices of toast.

The location of the hotel was good, it was a short walk to the metro and the streetcar stopped right out front. And either way, it wasn't a long walk to interesting attractions like the Van Gogh museum, and a real downtown area.

Overall I may have just been unlucky in my room and I would at least consider staying there again.

I know it’s an old building but that is no reason to still use keys, which meant when I got back to my room at the end of the day the door was not locked. Presumably the cleaners are to blame for this. The lighting in my room was so dull I had to use the torch on my phone on occasion, for example when I was trying to change the room temperature which was cold. The shower controls didn’t work well, so the water would suddenly run cold.

I did enjoy the bar. The decor was great and the bar menu delicious, although I do wish there were some large plate dishes.

A Good Choice

The College Hotel has a perfect location, close the museums, but also easy access to quieter, less touristed neighborhoods. The building is stunning—a former convent with high ceilings, brick walls a stained glass windows. The staff is super-friendly and helpful, and there is a good bar/restaurant and courtyard patio. The only negative is the extremely dark rooms—dark walls and not enough light sources. Bring a flashlight!

Reception a bit of a muddle

Rooms were lovely and comfortable, but receptionist not clued up. She told us when we booked in that we were upgraded and had a free bar in the room. Unfortunately that did not turn out to be the case, and my son went down to speak to her and she said sorry it had not happened. Fair enough, but on checking out the following the morning and handing the keys over, an other receptionist said ‘were we really checking out as one of the rooms was supposed to be booked for 2 nights. All a bit of a muddle really, not really professional.

Beautiful hotel!

My husband and I love this hotel. The building is gorgeous (an old school beautifully converted) in a great location within walking distance from all the museums. Nice bar area where we met with family and friends. We didn't try the restaurant so I cannot make any comments about the food but the breakfast room certainly looked very inviting. The service was wonderful, at check in you are greeted with a glass of Prosecco and we even got a room upgrade. It was a very friendly welcome after a long day of travel.
My only negative comment is that the window shades in our room (very top of building) did not really fit the windows and were not sufficient to keep the morning sun out so we would wake up at sunrise which in early May was around 5:40 (ouch!). I don't know if the other rooms have the same issue. However, we will definitely stay in this beautiful hotel again the next time we are in Amsterdam.

The junior staff at reception was very bad.

They gave the same room as we booked (superior) in front of us to another person who came after us though they inform us to wait as none of the rooms are read, and no explanation provided when we ask about it.
Next day we have to ask the same guy twice to get our room cleaned.

Thanks to Ali who helped us to make our stay better, otherwise, it was turning into a nightmare.

The public spaces are beautiful, seemed authentic, appropriate for a historic building. Nice courtyard bar and restaurant. Our third floor room was somewhat quirky, no dressers, but pretty big for the price. We never did figure out the lights. The location is perfect, out of the crazy center, but close to the main museums and interesting neighborhoods. Some of the staff were super helpful, others, not so much.

The building and restaurant is lovely and unique! However, my guest room was poorly lit. Difficult to apply makeup without additional lighting. Nice front desk staff but older gentlemen (greying hair) seemed a bit prickly. Would stay again and hope for better lighting :).

Good hotel, not a great location

We stayed for the first part of our trip on a canal which was idyllic and beautiful. We wanted to stay in a different suburb to have a different experience. De Pijp is hip and fun for 2 minutes, it is overcrowded and dirty. The hotel was actually a pretty cool old school building with awesome rooms and awesome bathroom. But the walls were very thin, we were woken up by the people next door to us multiple times. Also, we had to sign a waiver not to smoke in the rooms, but when we entered the room it smelt of stale cigarette smoke, it smelt horrible. The bed is super comfy, had a Nespresso machine, it has a great design and tall ceilings (Hard to come by in Amsterdam), lovely tall windows, glass of champagne and brownie bites on arrival, great customer service, beautiful bathrooms and close to museums. Just thin walls, not a great location, overcrowded area, traffic right outside and funky smelling rooms.

Nice easy place to stay.

Nice hotel with good amenities, situated in a quiet location but not too far away from restaurants and shops, the hotel itself on the whole has everything a traveller needs, from a well stocked bathroom to a good range of different foods for breakfast, lovely place to stay.

Best quiet hotel in Amsterdam

Excellent location as walkable to many sights and to the old centre. Rooms tended to be very poorly lit and sound proofing as I was in a closed off suite I think, was not great. Staff friendly and helpful.

Another great vacation.

Back for another stay in this lovely hotel. Staff are friendly and in general very Efficient - special mention for Claudia who is a true professional.

It is a training hotel which can throw up some quirks but in our experience these can be smoothed out with patience. Will definitely return.

This is a wonderful location and property is beautiful. As an American, we had to adjust to the fact that most buildings in Europe are very old and this one was no exception. Therefore, the lighting was a bit dark due to no overhead lighting in the rooms. The age of the building probably prevented that from being possible. Our room was quite small to us, but in Amsterdam, it's a decent sized room. The cleaning staff and wait staff was pleasant. The rooms were not spotless, but they were clean. My only real issue would have been with the front desk staff. They were very short and rude. We traveled with a group of 6 and one of our friends told the front desk that his phone in his room was broken. The exact response from the young woman working the counter was \"Do you need a phone?\". The next day we asked for recommendations on a place to get a cup of coffee nearby (other than the hotel itself. We wanted to try a different place). We were told \"Dam Square.\" That's it. Well, Dam Square is not nearby at all. We just ended up wondering around and eventually found a nice little bakery with coffee. Another friend of ours asked to change rooms because his smelled very heavily of mold. The front desk had no intention of helping him. He had to bug them for 48 hours straight to get his room changed. They were very annoyed that he would even request a different room. We did pay to have the breakfast and it was wonderful! The fresh juice and selection of food was great!

A stylish hotel in a quiet location

A small character hotel in a convenient and quiet area. We particularly liked the unique style and the comfortable bed. The room was spacious with a small sitting area but we were upgraded to a junior suite so can't comment on the size of other rooms. The staff are pleasant and helpful. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would choose to stay again at this hotel on our next visit to Amsterdam.

The College Hotel completely exceeded our expectations in every possible way. We had unfortunately been delayed arriving at the hotel due to circumstances beyond our control. They were kind, understanding, and went above and beyond in helping us add an extra day to our reservation - and even surprised us with a room upgrade when we finally were able to check in. An amazing welcome to Amsterdam!

We would highly recommend booking a room with the breakfast included each morning. It was amazing - cold and hot selections, pastries, juices, gourmet tea and coffee.

The hotel is simply beautiful with both charming and quaintly historic decor. The location is within a 10-15 minute walk to popular museums and attractions as well as hidden gems in the form of shops and restaurants. When we return to Amsterdam in the future we will not hesitate to stay here again and recommend The College Hotel to everyone! You will not be disappointed.

Nice hotel & area but just too far out of centre

Lovely hotel although quite dark inside and rooms are not as relaxing / nice as we anticipated - also not as close to the centre as we thought although the area is nice and Cafe Loetje nearby is excellent - if we had our time again we would have stayed closer but cant really fault the hotel - probably better in summer ?

The College hotel is the perfect location to explore Amsterdam. A tram stop right outside which takes you into the centre and the large museums are right around the corner (walking distance). The hotel was extremely clean and the staff very friendly. Great breakfast too!
