The hotel is not air conditioned and unfortunately temperatures reached 90 during our stay

Very nice stay. Cute and clean property. Convenient location. Yummy breakfast. Staff very nice and friendly. Parking is a little difficult in the area. They have limited courtyard parking for a few and must reserve in advance. Regardless of parking, would definitely stay here again!

The room was a good size for the family, but the two problems with the otherwise good hotel was the lack of parking (if you didn't reserve a parking spot ahead of time you get a card that lets you street-park within a section of the town), and it was not possible to take a proper shower, which I suspect is because we were on the top floor. If you are a solo or couple traveller with no car (or a parking reservation) this would probably be a 5 star hotel for you.

We stayed with our 2 children and really appreciated the quiet location and very friendly staff. The large double rooms with an en-suite bathroom are clean and tidy, and the beds were excellent. It was very hot when we stayed, so the fans in each room were a nice touch. Breakfast in the hotel was very relaxed. Handschuhsheim has a good selection of places to eat and drink close to the hotel. They all seem very popular with local people, so if you want to sit outside then arrive early. The Alt Hendesse and Giblets Goldener Adler are fairly traditional and would be our pick.
Getting in to Heidelberg town is simple thanks to the tram line about 5 minutes walk away. If we visited Heidelberg again, we'd definitely book this hotel again.

LOVED our stay in Heidelberg!

We LOVED this property in Heidelberg! We booked a regular room but got upgraded for free to a large family room with two bedrooms, a large bathroom and a kitchen - Room 4. My husband and I were thrilled to see the large bathroom - so rare for hotels in Europe. The hotel had quick WiFi and a TV with a two television stations in English. The man at the front desk carried all our luggage up for us and provided us with a map of the town, directions to Old Town and gave us a lot of insight on how to use the rail train/Metro system in the town. This was a 5-minute walk from the hotel and was a great way to get into the main part of Heidelberg.
Breakfast in the morning was phenomenal! A large array of lunchmeat, cheese, cereals, fruits and they had scrambled eggs and bacon too! The area was safe, quiet and easy to walk around in.
We had a rental car, arrived around 3pm on a weekday and had 4 spots to choose from in their parking lot. There were 6 spots available and other street parking across the street. By the time we got back to the hotel in the evening, around 8:30pm, the lot was full but it seemed there was still some street parking still available. The gate to the hotel is operated with the same key used for your room, if you arrive late at night when the gate is closed. Overall, LOVED this place and couldn't recommend it more!

Fabulous place to stay

A fantastic place to stay. Parking on site and great location. The atelier room was enormous, very comfortable bed and very clean. When we arrived we were given a coffee and lots of great recommendations of where to visit and restaurants. The breakfast was fresh, plentiful and delicious and Dirk was so friendly and charming that we felt like we were at home. Really recommend this hotel

Historic hotel modernized beautifully, nestled in the core of the millennium-old village of Handschuhsheim, now a neighborhood of Heidelberg. 12 minutes walk or a short ride on the occasional bus to the streetcar stop, and from there it's 10-15 minutes into the Altstadt. Typical plentiful German hotel breakfast comes with the room.

Friendly and Helpful Staff - But . . .

Great out-of-the-way hotel. Staff were very friendly and very helpful. Wonderful continental breakfast. While it is away from the InnerStadt, it only took us about 10 minutes to walk to the metro and get to the edge of the Old City. There were several restaurants in the area. Room was clean and large. WiFi was good. The only challenges for us were we were on the 3rd floor and so our ceilings were slanted, limiting the ability to use all of the space. Also, the tub had a hand shower - there was no standing shower. We would stay here again and try and get a room that did not have a slanted ceiling. Did I say the staff were wonderful?

Would definitely stay here again.
Great Owner who will tell you about the town and how to get around.
Great room, but no air conditioning. Fortunately it was cool out and could open the windows.
Street was busier than I thought so if light sleeper, keep you windows closed or ask for room not on the main street.
Great breakfast and coffee.
Has parking which was added benefit.
Take the tram to town, don't drive. Costs like $4 all day.

It is a charming hotel in a quiet part of town. It is very close to the tram to the city or train station. The staff was very friendly, even walking me To my room. The room was remodeled, clean, and cozy. I really enjoyed the neighborhood the most. You get a feeling for how the locals live. Great restaraunts near by. It was a great deal compared to the expensive hotels in the city center. I highly recommend for those who enjoy not being in a tourist area on a trip, and want a more residential experience.

We had a great stay and loved the room we were in. The rooms are simple and modern, but clean and spacious. The bathroom was great as well, very clean with sleek finishes. Lots of great windows too to let in fresh air. We were greeted promptly for check in and everyone we interacted with was very nice and helpful. Breakfast was great, it was nice to have warm options including eggs and meats. The coffee was the best part of the breakfast, so good! The hotel is not very close to the city center, but is just a quick walk to a metro line that can take you into the city center. We are big walkers so ended up walking home from the city center, and it took about 35-40 minutes.

Nice clean and spacious room. Moderate walk to River and Bizmark Platz. Right in neighborhood with shops, cafes and beer gardens. Easy walk to public transportation as well. Would recommend a sofa in room rather than the chairs. Friendly, helpful staff and management. Had a great 6 day stay.

The only downside to staying here was that there were no places to eat close by. It was only a short walk to a tram stop, however, and it was easy to find places on a bus or tram. An all day ticket for 3 of us was around 10 or 11 euros. The host at this hotel was awesome! She was very welcoming, helped take our luggage to the room, and assisted with directions. We were a little late for breakfast & all the bacon was gone. At first she said there was no more. Then a few minutes later, she brought out a silver platter ful of hot, crispy bacon! My son was ready to kiss her! The room was very large & comfortable. We would stay here again.

Pleasant Hotel Outside Center of Town

We were in Heidelberg during a festival, so this was the closest hotel we could find to the city center that was reasonably priced. We enjoyed our stay at this comfortable, clean hotel. It's in a quiet neighborhood across the river from old town Heidelberg. It's quite a hike to the old town, but the tram is easy to take. The hotel has a few parking spaces, otherwise, you'll have to park in the street. Overall, it was a nice stay, but a bit too far from the tourist attractions. There were some good restaurants near the hotel.

The hotel was very nice and close enough to Heidelberg to take public transportation. It may have been the time of year, but the hotel was quiet. For us it was ideal after staying in Heidelberg City. We enjoyed our walk to an old castle ruins and in the hills near the hotel. The staff was nice and spoke some English. We had a room on the top floor and it was warm, but with the fan provided it was OK.. The bathroom shower door had a broken hinge so we had to shower carefully not to have water go on the floor. It was late after the staff went home so we reported it in the morning. But overall it was a pleasant experience, beer was good in the bar area and breakfast was very good.

There were positive and negative aspects of our stay at this hotel.
On the plus side, it was spotlessly clean with comfortable beds , excellent hot water and heating; it was in an attractive \"separate village\" part of Heidelberg with 4/5 interesting and varied restaurants: the breakfast ( although not luxurious) was good,you could walk up into the woods, the parking was relatively easy; although it was a bit too far to walk comfortably, it took about 20 minutes to get into the centre by tram ; and, with one exception the staff were friendly.
On the minus side, our rooms had no easy chairs for watching TV; the lighting was inadequate; and the attitude of one staff member was cold and dismissive, so much so that we did not think we could ask him for help or information ( which is what you need so much when you are in a strange town with a limited grasp of the local language)

A small hotel with a good friendly atmosphere . It is located slightly out of the town centre, but this is NOT a problem as the tram stop is within easy walking distance and the trams are fast and regular into the centre. If you have your own car, parking is free .
I didnt have time to try the nearby restaurants, but they looked nice and reasonably priced from outside. Several German and Italian restaurants and also small cafes and bakeries almost next door.

I would definitely stay here again.

This hotel is very nice and simple. It is more of a guest house than a hotel. There is no lobby, just a small breakfast room. Our room was large with two twin beds in the front room and one king bed in the second room. There plenty of room for a family of 4. There is a sink and two electric burners and a small refrigirator but no dishes or utencils. No need for it anyway as they provide breakfast and there are so many restaurants in Town for lunch and dinner. The bathroom was clean and very simple, only shower gel is provided and towels, The staff was polite and helpful. No frills, an easy place to stay and a good value.

I liked the small friendly atmosphere of this hotel. The rooms were clean and modern and breakfast a typical continental. A bonus was that the staff all seemed to speak English even though I can understand German.

I had friends living nearby so it was an ideal location for me but I did not need to travel anywhere on my own.

We really enjoyed our stay here. It is not in the main part of Heidelberg, but there is easy access to everything by a short train ride. The people here were so friendly and helpful that we felt a part of the community by the time we left. The restaurants close to the hotel are great and the breakfasts we had at the hotel were also very good. Excellent price for being during tourist season and so close to Heidelberg.

Excellent Cozy Boutique Hotel

Room was excellent - very modern and obviously renovated recently. neighborhood was quaint, comfortable, walkable and safe. Breakfast was a good continental breakfast. Be sure you take down the Hotel address if you're using a GPS since the hotel was not in the GPS POI yet. We accidently went to another \"Deutscher Kaiser\" which was about 15 miles away before we realized our mistake.

Was not greeted at check in a favorable way. We seemed to be a bother. Parking was cubersome and seemed high stress to hotel. Access to rooms was round about. Rooms were super clean but not cozy or personal. Large windows made privacy difficult. Access to train was great but neighborhood was quiet & private.

This hotel was a really nice stay. We were staying in the family suite, and the room was a lovely character room with attic windows and views over the rooftops. Was a little concerned by other comments that the hotel was hard to find, but we found it with GPS without any problems. Service from all staff was excellent, and the breakfast was excellent! Hotel was a short walk to the tram stop, but no problems getting into the centre of town. Parking might have been difficult on the street, but staff were kind enough to let us park out the back of the building while renovations on neighbouring building were on hold. Would recommend to anyone!

The hotel was in a little out of the way area, but the neighborhood was nice and within walking distance to the of the university. The room was great and the breakfast was good. I had off-street parking for my rental car, which was a good thing as the streets and parking are a little tight. The hotel staff was very nice and friendly. The restaurants in the area are plentiful and the one we found down the hill to the east and around the corner was great.

This is not a hotel, but more like a motel / hostel.
There is no aircon. the curtain is too transparent that people can see through the room. there is no privacy. and, with the thin curtain, it is hard to sleep well.

We might have also overlooked the location of this hotel, as it is far from train station & castle. if you are travelling by train, this is not the choice.

Nice neighbourhood with nice restaurants.

Met all expectations for a family.

We stayed in an atelier room, number 5..it was perfect after a flight to Frankfurt. The staff was great, gave us our key early, made a cappuccino and warm milk for our 6 year old and nap we had. Located a short tram ride to Aldtstdt, we didn't need to find parking. If you've been to Heidelberg, you understand thT this is a good thing. The tram offers a 24hr family pass for only 9.30€ (up to 5 members). Again staff told us about that. Hotel neighbourhood is very safe and there are restaurants/bakeries close by should you wish to eat locally. There is free secure parking, though we parked on the street, as neighborhood is well established and safe. We will stay here again.

For the price against others, not impressed

This hotel is not the easiest to get to and its the furthest from the city centre that it can be. So you have to tram it in to the centre and if you are lucky you can guess what tram fare should be if you have no german. The hotelier speak limited english and have no tourist info in english and dont offer things to see and do. When we arrived it was dark, we had a big travel bag therw were no lights that we could see up the stairs. The staff were nice and tried to help if they could. The price is only 11 eruo less than the crown plaza in berlin but little comparison in quality. Actually, without considering value against other hotels its ok, but too far from city centre for the price. Also there are only 4 car parking spaces, so you need to get in early and not use your car while your there to keep the space.

The ad on hotels.com lead me to believe this is right in the heart of Heidelberg, but it is not. And that is the only complaint I have. We had a car, so it was not a problem for us, but for someone who expects to be right in the center, might be disappointed.
The hotel itself is lovely, the owner is really friendly, room was really clean, area it's in is nice. I would have liked AC, as it was really hot outside, but with a fan, it was quite good.

Hotel Deutscher Kaiser - pleasant for families

An excellent welcome by the owner and the rooms are spotless. The location is quite good if you don't mind not being right in the centre. The only drawback is that the family room (we were 4) is under the roof. In July, it gets extremely hot. The owner provides an electrical fan but it is noisy. Still, I would return there. The breakfast is good although with a limited range.

Average hotel at a good price

As somewhere to sleep and eat a good breakfast, Hotel Deutscher Kaiser is perfectly satisfactory. The hotel is situated in a nice area of Heidelberg, although a mile or so from the old town. Trams to central areas stop a few hundred metres around the corner. The area is very quiet in the evening, with a couple of pubs a short walk away. Rooms, and hotel in general, were basic but clean and comfortable. No complaints for the price.

Excellent stay, small hotel but my room was so huge by somehow, loved it

I stayed for one day at this lovely hotel, i was with my parents hence needed a triple occupancy room, they gave me a nice two bedroom with small kitchen and seating area. All needed basics are there and everything felt like it was new.
Great beds, typical small town traditional area, the only thing is that its on a narrow street and i needed to find parking in the area since the hotel parking was full.
i was at the InterContinental in Hamburg for a week before this one and i loved this hotel 10 times better than the Inter.
100% recommended for a couple or a family.

This hotel is located in a lovely old residential neighbourhood behind a big church. Everyday, you can hear the bell chiming, very different from modern life. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to the bus stop and about 10 minutes to the centre. The waiting time is almost not noticeable. The hotel is very clean and comfortable. The breakfast has fresh fruits, cold cuts, boiled egg and fresh bread with coffee and juice. The staffs are very friendly.

most beautifull spot to stay

We have traveled across the world and I found this hotel to be one of the best. The staff were exceptional in every way. Whatever we needed, use of internet to book flights, organising taxi for airport, sending email with directions were all free. Breakfast was plentiful, as much meat, cheese, eggs, fruit and lovely soft rolls as we could eat. The rooms were so cosy, clean with fresh towels each day, bottled water and sweets in the room. Would recommend it. Lovely resturants on the streets around the hotel

The hotel is located in a quiet old residential area, but with nearby restaurants. Access from the train station is simple by a streetcar that goes from the station to within a five minute walk of the hotel.

Good clean room. Toilet was clean, but get toiletries. Breakfast is decent but not great. About 1km away from train station. Got a ticket (maybe weekend deal) for 5 people for 9 Euro valid for 24 hours which can be used on the train and bus. Heidelberg is a nice place though the Fort (ruins actually) and the ride (by the side of the hill) was a disappointment. Will stay here again.

We stayed in a family room, it was very big and clean. Nice breakfast in the morning . Not close enough to walk to the centre of Heidelberg bur close to the tram stop so this was not a problem I would recommend it.

This is a very impresive hotel. the family room we had was extreamly well laid out and gave great room for the family to sleep play and eat.
The people have been very helpful and polite. Everything is very clean. Food is great fro breakfast, will come back again.

Hotel Kaiser - good family stay

We stayed in one of the Atelier Rooms. It was extremely spacious but in the roof of the hotel, so a bit hot on arrival. It was three flights of stairs up with no lift, so keep that it in mind. No shower only a bath with hand shower. Also, no restaurant for evening meal (except sandwiches) so we were forced to eat out. The room had hotplate and sink, but no cooking utensils etc. Despite all of this a nice location a little bit away from the centre of Heidelburg, but close enough by tram or car and a number of eateries within walking distance. We all enjoyed our stay - and would recommend it as a lovely venue for families.

Very cozy hotel in cozy neighborhood

Very nice hotel,pretty and clean with great breakfast and near tram stop to Heidelberg. Staff is very nice and accommodating. Parking is an issue and sometimes one must find parking on the street. It's in a pretty area and since we like to walk, we did so to the old city in Heidelberg. Would definitely stay there again.

The hotel itself was clean and nice. The breakfast was adequate but nothing fancy. However, there were two problems. One was the noise level. Since it was hot outside, we had to leave the windows open. It was hard to sleep because of the continuous banging of doors, throwing away of glass bottles, traffic, early morning garbage trucks, etc. which turned out to be frustrating when we were trying to sleep. The other problem was the woman on duty in the morning. She was very grouchy and didn't seem to care when we told her the hotel was quite noisy. She could have at least showed some concern. Also, she was somewhat annoyed that we asked to leave our car parked in the courtyard until early afternoon. We were gone well before other guests were to check in, and there was only one other car there when we left. Friendliness and professionalism can go a long way with regards to hotel satisfaction.
