Situated at 100 King Street in the central conservation area, The Rex occupies the former Midland Bank, one of Manchester’s most distinguished buildings. Designed in 1928 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, its neoclassical form and subtle Art Deco detailing give it a presence that requires no introduction.

Behind its distinctive façade, a different kind of indulgence unfolds. Intimate rooms, elevated dining and discreet social spaces shape an atmosphere defined by character and intent.

This is The Rex, where sanctuary is served. Reign Restaurant Located on the sixth floor, Reign is a destination restaurant defined by atmosphere, flavour, and perspective.

With sweeping views across the city, the space blends contemporary design with subtle Art Deco influences creating a setting that feels both elegant and modern. Our menus and cocktails celebrate creativity, seasonality, and provenance, with ingredients carefully sourced from trusted local suppliers.

At Reign, expect a restaurant with real energy, a menu with attitude, and carefully curated wine list to complement every moment, from intimate dinners to vibrant celebrations. The staff we met were friendly, helpful and polite. The room was lovely, very clean and spacious. It was quite warm despite turning the air conditioning down as far as possible. We went to celebrate my husband's 40th birthday. Which I made the hotel aware of in the booking and via email and when checking in they weren't aware of and asked the reason for our stay. When we have stayed in other hotels they have acknowledged it and even added little touches in the room which have been gratefully received. This level of service wasn't experienced on our stay which was a shame. That being said we did have a nice stay and enjoyed our time in Manchester.

Lovely hotel. We were upgraded to the inner sanctum which was a gorgeous interior room with a projected image of Paris, NY or London to give the feeling of a window - ingenious and really effective. Bed was super comfy and I could have stayed in the shower all day. Breakfast was decent with lovely views over Manchester. Staff all very friendly and attentive.

This was my second stay at this hotel, my first was around a decade or so ago when the hotel was new and fresh. I stayed overnight with my boyfriend this time and must say the hotel is still as beautiful as it was when it first opened. We could not fault the staff, every single staff member was absolutely incredible and a real asset to the hotel, I can’t comment on the food as we did not stay for breakfast or have an evening meal but the style of the hotel doesn’t disappoint and I’m really looking forward to visiting their establishments in Newcastle and the up-and-coming one in Bristol.
We stayed in room 208 and if there was anything to improve, I would say that there are a few minor bits of wear and tear that would need attention in the bathroom such as the expanding skirting boards from water hitting the wood, a few of the metal hooks and the in shower toiletry basket being quite loose. I’d also recommend having some slippers, maybe changing the robes as they were a little bit crunchy and having some branded towel towels like some other five star establishments. We didn’t have the turn down service on this occasion but it would have been nice to have had more teas, coffees and maybe some hot chocolates in the room as they weren’t many options to choose from.
There was some building work happening, but this did not interfere with our stay, there was no noise and overall it was a comfortable and pleasant experience! Looking to bring my mum for a night away in the future!

All the staff are friendly, professional and welcoming.
Location is great for shopping and the many restaurants Manchester has to offer.
Our room was lovely - comfortable bed, ample space, great shower, lots of amenities
Special mention to the concierge on both days as they were fantastic. Nothing too much trouble.
Valet parking was worth paying for.
Would highly recommend a stay here.

We came to stay on our wedding night. Whilst the room and breakfast were lovely, the check-in experience was a shame. There was no one downstairs to tell us where to go - not ideal when you’ve come straight from your wedding (stood in a wedding dress)! A member of maintenance staff ended up spotting us and let us know where to go. When we got up to reception, the member of staff wasn’t particularly warm at all. We didn’t expect a red carpet but would have liked a level of warmth/welcome when clearly arriving straight from our wedding. Despite being a 5-star hotel, we received the lowest level of service that day across our celebrations and venues.

Greeted at the door as soon as we pulled up. Very friendly staff on the door and the desk. Guided upstairs to check in.
Explained everything we needed. We picked not to have breakfast here but moose around the corner. Hotel very clean. Room was huge, bed was massive.

Overall great stay

An amazing experience, we stayed in the Bank managers suite, complimentary prosecco on ice, roll top bath, emperors bed with egyptian cotton sheets, all of the little touches from the umbrella to the cash bags, breakfast in bed....amazing time.
If you get chance, get this room.
The staff are also first class, in particular Kelly, who is a credit to gotham, bright, helpful and engaging.

Enjoyable 1 night stay

Enjoyed our first stay a Gotham. Very nice hotel, room was very luxurious and comfortable. Bathroom and shower great, high-end decor and fittings. Bed comfortable. Good location for everything however parking was a problem due to pride weekend so had to park on Whitworth st which was a 15 min walk away. Room facilities good, fridge and kettle c/w tea coffee etc. Room extras that can be purchased at prices surely aimed at the likes of Bruce Wayne. As it’s an old building the windows are single pane which wasn’t a problem for us but might get street noise during busy nights. Would stay again.

I have stayed at the Gotham six times now over the past few years. I fell in love with the hotel at the start, exceptional staff, a unique decor, amazing quality breakfasts and luxury feel made staying at the Gotham a real treat and worth the premium rate attached to the stay. However my stays for 2025 so far have been a little disappointing.

Staff remain polite, friendly, courteous but I am noticing a higher turnover of staff, which is shame. I enjoyed being greeted by the same people, recognising me and welcoming me back. Check in is expeditious and smooth but previously you were automatically offered the welcome drink (ordinarily champagne), my last two visist I have had to ask, which is awkward and uncomfortable. For me, this little treat was all part of the Gotham experience.
The rooms are feeling tired. Lots of visible wear such as damaged wallpaper, threadbare patches in the carpet, not to mention the top to bottom scaffolding works which has been ongoing for all of this year.
Breakfasts are now just \"good\" not the exceptional quality previously seen. Lower quality bacon & sausage is disappointing & the no more honey comb!
One of the big issues is the air conditioning. It basically is ineffective. I think big investment is needed or a price drop - regrettably I probably will look to other hotels in future :(

I wasn't aware of the scaffolding on the hotel and wasn't given a reduced rate and wasn't aware till i got there or would have cancelled and gone else where
Poor check in and £200 deposit . im not a child or young adult who may trash the hotel.

Stunning hotel - loved the decor and all the staff were amazing. But very overpriced - we stayed on a night when Oasis were playing so I think the price was massively increased. Breakfast was just ok - great coffee but the avo and eggs were cold - and expected more for £30.

Just a little bit overrated for a 5*. Felt more like a 4* to us. One of those establishments trying to bridge the gap of 4* to 5* with quirky/inventive touches. The lobby is cramped as was the room. Major construction work going on so very noisy. Bar nothing special but very very expensive drinks. £38 glass of Chardonnay!!! Without the construction noise I’d call it a decent 4*

1 night break - expensive

Booked here for 1 night to celebrate oir anniversary. Upon arival it became apparent that refurbishment was going on asnthe hotel was covered in scaffolding, whilst we were not disturbed by any noises every single window was blocked and even the terrace bar was blocked - had I known this i wouldn't have booked.
Check in was fast and staff great.
Room was quirky and few nice touches, bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was great.
Breakfast wasn't great its not a full bufffet but the pastries and fruit are which were nice and fresh the full English is ordered and despite waiting 30 mins (restaurant was not full by a long shott) it was not fresh at all, very dry and we both did not eat it - probably the worst Breakfast I've had in a hotel.
Overall its a 'nice' hotel and glad I've experienced it but i probably wouldn't stay again as far better ones available.

Massively underwhelmed unfortunately. The building works/scaffolding prevented any kind of view from any window. The room itself was very small - nothing like the pictures online. The two steps leading down from the bathroom to the bed are not visible at 4am when using the bathroom. Fell down them into the wall & injured my elbow.

At check out, a service charge was added on to the restaurant bill (fair enough), but then a service charge was also added on to the overall hotel bill. For what? Checking me in and out which is their job? Are the staff not paid enough for the role they perform? My room wasn’t turned down for the one night I stayed as we arrived at 5.30pm. Yes, the charge is optional, but the guest shouldn’t have to have this conversation in the check out queue. Pay the staff better to avoid this.

Surprised that last orders was 11.30pm for hotel guests on a Friday night.

Really disappointed as this was a Christmas gift for my husband in connection with concert tickets & it wasn’t like I paid cheap. Expected so much more for what I paid for one night. Gutted!

The bed is the worst i've ever slept on, is worst than any inflatable bed. Mattress is broken and sink in the middle so you body is in U shape when you lay down.
Hotel is under massive refurbishment so all work started to go off as early as 8ish.

Booked 2 night and couldn't sleep a min on the first night and had to book another hotel for the second night.

The good thing is the staffs in the hotel are all super friendly and helpful, that's the only good thing of our stay.

Once a touch of luxury, but the shine has gone

Overall the hotel is not what it was. I’m aware there was renovation work going on, but the rooms seemed like standards have slipped. From a shower door that didn’t close properly, to cosmetics basket that would pull out of the wall. Valet service asked us what time we would like the car back, we said 12 noon. We came down at 11.59 and they then said “go and get it” to one of the staff. We finally got the car back 22 minutes later, whilst dodging workmen carrying in building products. The bar was also being refurbished, but still open. I can be very understanding of this, but after work had finished at 19.30, the floors were covered in dust and footprints - surely running a mop across wouldn’t be that difficult?

With the exception of the one lady who welcomed us at reception, the staff seem unable to smile or offer any warmth at all, yet the hotel charges a “service charge” for the staff, despite also charging this for the bar and restaurant too. Surely the staff service charge is what you pay the room rate for?

Overall, this was once a luxury hotel that genuinely made you feel special and valued. Now, it feels like it could be any other hotel but with nice bedroom amenities. The shine has gone but the price remains the same. Genuinely a real shame.
