The hotel is an adaptive conversion of the iconic Clare Hotel and former Carlton & United Breweries administration building, offering 62 rooms across a diverse range of styles.

The Clare Bar at the hotel reception playfully reinterprets its history as the 'pub' area of the Clare Hotel, creating a warm welcome for all guests.
In collaboration with Unlisted Collection, three independent restaurants are offered: Automata by Clayton Wells, formerly of Momofuku Seiobo; Silvereye by Sam Miller, former executive sous chef at Noma (San Pellegrino World's Best New Restaurant); and Kensington Street Social by Jason Atherton, Michelin-starred British chef and longtime Unlisted Collection collaborator. Visibility to help with luggage we had to lug our own luggage to our rooms which is unheard of / previous owners had bell staff to take your luggage from the car - foyer areas are very run down - whole hotel needs a revamp as it’s looking very stayed - it is such a shame as we have been here many times under the old owners and loved it every time - this time we have been left wanting - even the rooftop bar was empty which tells you something - this used to ALwAyS be pumping …. Do better to stay competitive

Fantastic location and very modern room. Only thing that was a little unnerving was that the all-glass shower stall is in the middle of the room and has no curtains or anyway to shield the view inside the shower from anyone in the room. May be awkward for couples sharing a room who are no comfortable being completely undressed in front of each other. There were also several times that there was no one at the front desk. But otherwise a very comfortable stay in a beautiful hotel.

History of the room and building exposed by the Architecture features was wonderful but the hotel is starting to lose its lustre. Upkeep and maintenance are clearly not what they should be for a five-star hotel. Reception was impossible to contact before check-in.

Spent 5 nights. Roof top bar and downstairs bar were closed for private parties on more nights than they were open to hotel guests. I enjoyed the variety of restaurants down a mostly pedestrian path adjacent to the hotel. Central Station is only 5 blocks away.

One of the main reasons we booked this property was the pool. We wanted a holiday where we could use the pool in a morning to relax or in an afternoon to cool off. Sadly we where not informed that the pool was closed 1 afternoon for a private pool party, and closed 1 morning while an interview was being filmed there. No staff informed us of this when checking into the property, or when booking.
The hotel itself is lovely, great rooms and a fantastic location. However, if you are paying a little bit extra for a place with a pool, its really better to look elsewhere.

Boutique hotel that's only 10 years old but already showing it's age. Some design elements quite dated and room basics like cupboards and carpets show wear and tear. Light switches and aircon control poorly located in the loft room that I booked. I was expecting luxury from the photos, but the reality felt like a 3~4 star hotel, not 5 star.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Old Clare! The hotel was beautiful, spotless, and full of character, and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly or helpful. The free breakfast at TOCH was a highlight as it was delicious and worth every bit of the add-on (it was something we looked forward to each morning!). Our Connell room was fantastic, with super comfortable beds, lovely robes and slippers, and luxurious shower products that felt like a real treat. The location, just steps from Central Station, made exploring Sydney and beyond quick and easy. We also loved the Polaroid guest book; a thoughtful and charming touch that made the experience even more memorable. This hotel exceeded our expectations, and we’ll gladly stay here again on our next trip to Sydney!

I arrived early and asked if I could leave my bags while I went and explored. They agreed and even offered to upgrade me for aud$100, I declined as there was no need but the offer was appreciated.

They have the eco-friendly offer of where you decline having your room cleaned, they give you $10 credit per day but it seems you're only allowed to use it in their bar only
I had an early flight and wasn't going to make breakfast (7am to 10.30am) and asked if it was possible to pre-order. They offered a breakfast box and asked what time I would like it. I mentioned 5.30am, double checked again in the afternoon but another person was on reception and they said they couldn't see any note requesting this. So he added a note and when I checked out, another person was on reception and she double checked with the kitchen where they seemed to be unaware and started preparing the box. The box turned out to be a bag with a granola cup with berries and yogurt.

I had an early flight and wasn't going to make breakfast (7am to 10.30am) and asked if it was possible to pre-order. They offered a breakfast box and asked what time I would like it. I mentioned 5.30am, double checked again in the afternoon but another person was on reception and they said they couldn't see any note requesting this. So he added a note and when I checked out, another person was on reception and she double checked with the kitchen where they seemed to be unaware and started preparing the box. The box turned out to be a bag with a granola cup with berries and yogurt.

Spice alley stacks all their trash cans right outside the hotel and they don’t recycle. From 10pm to midnight you will hear people sorting through the cans for bottles. Anywhere from 5am to 7am you are going to hear the garbage pickup of 30 trash cans. Everyday!

Both my partner and I barely ate half our meals before getting up and walking out. We had to book very last minute (midnight!) due to our airbnb not being sufficient. Fab, who was on reception for the night went above and beyond to ensure we felt comfortable after our recent experience and absolutely turned our night around! We got upgraded to the Showroom Suite which was phenomenal and not something we would have booked however moving forward it will be the room we book for our frequent Sydney trips. Thank you to the staff - great experience and stay. Very happy and grateful :)

My wife and I stayed at the Old Calre last year for our wedding anniversary and we enjoyed it so much we thought we would come back again. Unfortunately we thought the hotel had slipped somewhat - even walking into the lobby to check in in there was a noticeable difference. The staff seemed indifferent mostly - not rude - but not doing anything to show they really cared. The room was clean and we love the set up, but the mattress was very soft, far too much so. The pool was lovely, though even there the little things like tiles missing and an over all run down look was disappointing. Plus the roof top bar closed so early at 8pm. Sorry to say but we will consider other options next year.

Pretty underwhelmed by the hotel - felt a bit tired, my business partner found rubbish under the bed (clothing tags and labels), so missing a bit of attention to detail. The parking was a bit convoluted, provided a video link to find the entrance, but a map would have been much easier to follow that a 3 x speed video of a car driving.

What an absolute disaster of a hotel. It was awful from the moment we arrived to when we fled this edifice of misery. On arrival we were greeted by a surly and disinterested front desk attendant and then had to navigate past trays of stale and festering room service cluttering the corridors only to find our room had seen better days, a long time ago. This hotel would be given 1 star by Russians in the eighties. It’s grey, worn out and grimy. That they claim to be 5star and charge what they do is outrageous and worthy of a police investigation. It’s a miserable dive. The only good part of our stay was leaving.

Really poor hotel
Honestly, this hotel is pretty rough. On the surface it looks nice enough, but during our three night stay we ran into a pretty large list of problems that demonstrate just how little the management care about the guest experience at the Old Clare. To be clear, all the staff we spoke to were friendly, polite and apologetic. This isn't a staff problem, but a management one. Here goes...
1) The room we were put in (101) has a terrible problem with traffic noise. Not just noise, but also deep vibrations from the large vehicles passing by on Broadway (one of the busiest, most 24/7 roads in the city). There was a limited effort at sound proofing in place, but the downside of that is that the windows couldn't be opened, which leads to issue number 2...
2) The place doesn't smell great. The lobby area smells of old cooking oil whilst the room smells of stale fast food and even light cigarette smoke. Without the ability to open windows, this isn't awesome.
3) The beds are genuinely the worst I've ever slept in. They are either extremely old and have lost all structure, or the hotel deliberately chose the softest, saggiest mattresses they could find. This will be subjective, but if a very very soft bed bothers you, you will definitely want to avoid this place. It was actually so bad that for the last night we threw in the towel and booked a cheap room at the Mercure next door just so we could sleep.

The Old Clare is an exceptional boutique hotel option if you are looking to explore Sydney from a central location. The rooms are beautifully renovated with insanely tall ceilings, luxe toiletries, and literally the most comfortable beds and pillows I have ever experienced. Seriously, I am going to email the hotel to ask what they are so I can get some for myself. The staff is also amazing, the food is excellent, and the rooftop pool is Instagram worthy. Highly recommended!

Disappointed from the onset with a special accessibility type room given which was not requested/ wanted. Ongoing discussions required with staff to change rooms when paid moderate room rate and hotel not fully booked ( room next yo mine which was larger and nicer empty). In new room, noisy but tolerable however aircon on faulty setting created 27degreesC every 2 hours, no compensation for a bad nights sleep.

Will require escalation to senior management as manager on site offered a coffees/ breakfast to compensate which whilst kind is not realistic given the cost per room and lack of sleep.

Their website says outdoor heated pool. This is false . The pool is not heated. On conde naste it says largest outdoor heated pool in Sydney. The pool is 7 meters , very narrow and not heated. When I asked about this, they said it’s heated by the sun 😂😂😂. One staff member told me it’s warmest in the morning!!

Right from the start this place is just oozes coolness. The rooms are beautifully renovated as is the hotel. The renovated bar downstairs is amazing and it’s in a great part of Sydney that is really starting to rebuild.
