My friends and I stayed in the two bunk room and were pleasantly surprised by this hotel for the price. Staff was friendly and helpful, the room was spacious enough for 4 girls, and the beds were surprisingly comfy. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend to anyone coming to the city!

Cool hotel. Friendly staff. Comfortable. Excellent water pressure. Awesome location. My only issue was that the room was a bit worn out. None of the power / usb outlets in the bunkbeds really worked (all were loose and anything plugged in would just fall out). Some lights would flicker, and one bulb on the ceiling was missing a cover. Minor issues. Overall a lovely place to stay!

The bathroom was exceptionally small with the sink only 2 1/2 feet high so you need to bend over significantly to wash. Also the shelf extends 5 inches over the sink so you can't fully place your face over the sink. In addition, the elevator compressor hummed all night so I did not get a restful sleep. Otherwise the room was adequate for a short stay. Price and location are ideal.

Everything about this property from the location to the amenities and the cleanliness were fantastic. However, the walls are paper thin in that I heard every door that slammed & even heard the shower running next door. To be fair, there was an event/party that night, with guests who happened to be on my floor. And if not for that, I would give 5/5 stars.

Hotel is so unique and trendy! Smaller sized rooms, but that’s the charm! Decorated in a fun and unique way! Staff was so helpful. We needed a fan for white noise to sleep, they weren’t sure they had one. 10 minutes later the maintenance man knocked at our door with a brand new fan for us! Great location! Great hotel! Can’t wait until we can stay at freehand once again!

The rooms are charming. This was my first time in midtown. I loved the convenience to the subway and the overall decor and theme of the hotel. The price was cheaper around Christmas time, would definitely return back.

Nice, creative ambience, friendly staff, great location. I have stayed at Freehand New York many times, and I am always satisfied. Especially when arriving at Grand Central, getting to Freehand is very easy, and from here you have easy access to everything while still being a bit off the beaten track.

The overall environment of the hotel is nice, and the room is okay. However, the room was incredibly dry—I woke up with a severe sore throat and painful eyes, which completely ruined my sleep. On top of that, the front desk staff handling the check-in had a not good attitude and were very rude.

The hotel has a truly cool vibe, and its history makes the experience even more interesting. It’s in a great location—close to Midtown, but just far enough from the chaos of Times Square to feel relaxed. The rooms are charming and surprisingly spacious, and I loved the funky décor. The beds were incredibly comfortable—easily one of the highlights of the stay.
Check-in, however, felt a bit frosty. It almost seemed as though the person behind the desk was the one being inconvenienced, rather than welcoming a guest. A warmer greeting would have made a much better first impression, as it set a slightly flat tone at the start.
The hotel itself is very casual, so if you’re looking for an upscale, traditional luxury experience, this may not be the right fit. That said, the building is beautiful and the overall vibe is young and hip. Despite the less-than-warm welcome, I would definitely stay again for the location and the generous room size alone.

I liked the atmosphere of the hotel and its location. Bathroom sink is very small. There’s barely any space inside the small refrigerator and I could only fit small water bottles in there after taking out the racks. Other than that, I’m pleased with my stay there. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. I had a room in the inside part of the building, and it was very quiet at night.

This stay was exactly as expected. Clean quiet place to sleep each night. Great location near subways and food choices. Safe and easy to walk to other neighborhoods. We enjoyed using the lounge area one afternoon to take a little break and not be in our room. Price seemed fair for room quality and location.

The location is excellent. Our king bed was comfortable. The room was pretty dirty with dust and rubbish under the bed. The staff were fairly apathetic. Our room was really dark and tiny. The common room on level 2 is excellent but we didn’t realise it was there until we were leaving as the staff didn’t tell us anything about the hotel when we checked in

yes staff nice..but the rooms had no blankets [it was snowing for 3 days and freezing that night] and the general areas were also unheated and not really fit to hang out. In fact the resturant was so cold for breakfast most people chose not to eat there.

Disappointing ! my assigned room was very loud with the AC unit outside . I asked to change the room. the next room the heater did not work . I had to be moved the third time and heat in that room was also faulty. Not what I expected. It has been my go to hotel when I am in NYC.

I loved my stay! First, the staff were so so helpful and kind. The hotel is so beautiful in the art deco style and definitely romanticized my experience. The room was larger than I expected for a hotel room in NYC and very home-y feeling. I loved the access to the bar (heads up that drinks are pretty pricey but happy hour prices are reasonable). The cafe in the morning was a great place to work from and the food and drinks were yummy and relatively reasonably priced if you’re looking to sit and have your meal there. I’d love to see it in the warmer weather when I can check out the rooftop bar as it was closed during my stay. But I was between Freehand and a chain hotel of comparable price, and I’m so happy I chose Freehand. I’d love to stay again.

A bit disappointed. We liked it the first time but this time, it was run down! Resort fee again and for what? They offered absolutely nothing , not even an in house restaurant. Called several times to ask if there was any construction going on and no one said, restaurant is closed and being renovated. Ill pass on this again.

Personal was awesome, the location was great for where I needed to be, the only issue is that the Heater stoped working, the good thing they brought us a portable and worked just fine. The only thing I would recommend them is to get better sound proof windows, that amount of noise from outside is too much, but the rest it was just a great stayed.

Fabulous stay! The staff was fantastic - super friendly and accessible. Loved the design, although the wooden walls in the bathroom don't lend themselves to easy cleaning. It's hard to get in the nooks and crannies of the ridges really well. I noticed that in a few other areas of the hotel as well. But overall loved our stay and would absolutely come again.

Excellent stay - location, service, quality and spaciousness was amazing. I’ve been making several trips to NY per year for the last 12 years, and this was one of my favorite hotels I’ve stayed in here. Only very minor issue was that our room was cold in the evenings. We had a thermostat and turned the temp up to 73 for over 24 hrs, but it stayed chilly.

I was there for 6 nights not a bad place and was clean, however there was no heating AT ALL…. I talked to the staff and they were nice about it and said they would send an engineer to look at it but no one ever came. I was freezing every single night which made it horrible to be in the room.

Stayed in the a premium king room which was a great size for our needs. Most of our time was spent away from the hotel exploring NYC but when we did come back to the room it was nice to have a little seating area. Yes the bathroom was tiny but I didn’t expect anything else.
I have read lots of reviews complaining about the noise, come on folks it’s Manhattan! I always travel with ear plugs so it didn’t bother me one bit.

This was a perfect room for my husband and our 14 year old daughter. The bathroom had absolutely zero counter space so a hanging bathroom cube is a must! The room was clean and very quiet (hardly any noise outside which honestly is surprising for NYC). The gentleman who assisted us with our bags was soooo kind!

Tip, the taxis in the area have a set fee to JFK airport so if you need a ride to the airport, skip uber and ask the bell guys for a taxi.
