Not quite last minute but booking during peak season. Didn’t have a ton of choices traveling with a party of three adults. Picked two double rooms at the Hotel Van Gelder. Rooms were clean and had good amenities. The staff was outstanding. The hotel is in the CBD so it’s right in the heart of the city. No lift so pack light. It’s not like a big corporate chain hotel but that was ok with me. I’d highly recommend if you can get by with no lift

This place has very narrow steep steps to its rooms. If you have mobility issues whatsoever. This is not the place for you. Other than that the Staff were bright and cheery. The rooms are what they are in the description.. I got a single room and it was literally the size of a prison cell. The bed was really stiff as well. The bathroom was very nice.

Hotel Van Gelder is in a perfect spot for visiting Amsterdam - right near Central Station and about a 20 minute walk to all the museums/markets. But, keep in mind the building is very old and there is NO ELEVATOR. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are small but updated and clean. If you have any difficulty managing quite a few stairs, this is not the hotel for you.

Staff was very kind and welcoming. The temperature in the room was comfortable. However, we didn’t have hot water for one night. We also found a container of a certain substance inside the closet which smelled extremely pungent and also means that they did not clean the room well beforehand. It was also difficult to carry our luggage up the steep stairs and there was a lot of noise coming from outside the window at night. The convenience of the location however was good for the price we paid.

The room was spacious and very clean. The staff was very helpful. Only complaint, which is out of their control, the is no elevator. It was a one stoy walk up to get to check in and two more stories to get to the room. I didn't see that listed on the site, and it was a bit of a surprise.

Hotel van Gelder has a nice location, clean hotel, they have a nice comfy room! It's just be careful with the stairs, they dont have lift so when you have heavy luggage or bulky luggages its going to be a little tough. Hotel van Gelder's stairs are a little steep and small, I have a US size 9 women shoes I have to angle my foot on its side. If you are a senior, its going to be tough with the stairs. But overall, amazing and beautiful place. Will book the same hotel when I get the chance to get back st Amsterdam!

Overall, things such as cleanliness, staff and quality was fine, no issues there. Even then, it was very minimal, even for the Dutch. Where my review severely drops stars is logistics and terms. There were quite a few make-or-break terms/conditions that were not disclosed to me until after a room was allotted and payment accepted. Upon asking for clarification, the information was listed nowhere on third party listings, direct, or in person. Deeply disappointed by this, certainly will not return nor recommend. There are places to stay within the same price range and locations that are 2x-3x better. Out of the dozens of stays I’ve had in Amsterdam alone, this was the worst value, and most deceptive.

This property is very convenient to the train station but there is no elevator going up at all. So it’s not recommended to older travellers with heavy luggages. This hotel is only good for light travelers with strong knees to go up the steep stairs. The receptionist when we checked in named Anooska has an attitude not suitable for customer oriented job like what she’s doing. She can tell us in a nice way but she told us in a sarcastic and rude way but on our checked out the guy in the reception was very helpful to carry our luggages down without being asked.

The top floor has just been redecorated. Lots of stairs to the top floor so if you have full size luggage take caution! We just had carry on so it made it just fine. Lovely staff!

The pictures online do not look anything like the actual rooms you stay in. The rooms are very small, old & run down. There are a LOT of stairs. You have to walk very steep steps from the entrance to the lobby, carrying all your luggage.

I was very happy with my room, scenery, the cleanliness of everything, and the bathroom. There is a bit of street noise of course, but this was expected. The air conditioning was a big help and was very silent yet powerful at making the room cool. The shower was a great size and had good pressure + heat. The hotel's photos of this room are exactly how it looks.

Location is very good - close to central station and the bars etc.
Usual set up for this type of Amsterdam hotel - tiny frontage (a door and stairs), and a bit of a warren inside.
Staff fine.
Very steep stairs to upper floors - also the steps very shallow - easy to fall especially if with cases etc.
The room was very recently renovated. Very clean and liked the minimalist style.
I was in twin - bed was small - but singles aren’t exactly large.
Of this profile of hotel in Amsterdam this is quite good.

Hotel was perfectly located, five minutes from the central station. Our room was lovely and clean, with a comfy bed and, most importantly, air conditioning. It’s been 30 degrees celcius and over every day we’ve been in Amsterdam, and coming back to a perfectly cooled room was a life saver. Thank you for a great stay!

The spiral staircases are so narrow and luggages are so hard to take up there if you are lucky to have your room on the higher floor. Its like an accident waiting to happen if you are not careful going up or going down.

Hotel Van Gelder is 6 minutes from the central train station and heart of the attraction street. Location wise it’s busy and close to everything. The hotel is older/classic but kept well. My 13 yrs old daughter and I stayed at the third floor and the stairs are wild: steep and narrow. There wasn’t an elevator but we only had two carryons.

Great little hotel right in the centre of Amsterdam. Our room was on the top floor, and yes the stairs are extremely tight but this is typical of all old dutch buildings. We were in room 18 which has just been refurbished and the place was immaculate. Staff were all really friendly and helpful. 5 minute stroll from the train station so really accessible. We would definately stay here again withiut any hesitation.

We were located on the top floor and the stairs are very steep. Not an issues for us but could be problematic for those with mobility issues.

Great central location and handy to the central railway station. Loved that we could walk out onto the busy street area with plenty of eateries and shops.
Staff were very helpful, English wasn’t a problem.
Just be prepared with strong arms to lug your suitcases up the stairs. 😊
The small room we chose worked well for us.

Also I know the Dutch are tall, but not everyone is 6ft+ tall… the bathroom mirror was so high I could only see the top of my head, so no use for applying make-up.

The Hotel van Gelder was one of my favorite hotels during my two week stay in Europe. My superior single room had air conditioning, unlike my other more expensive rooms in Austria, Germany, and Croatia. When I checked in I was greeted by Khalid, a very friendly person who had lots of information about local eateries and places to visit. The room was nice and clean and looks like it was recently remodeled. Some people probably didn't like the steps, but I stayed on the third floor and I didn't mind. If I ever get back to Amsterdam and am traveling alone, I would definitely stay here again.

Nice, reasonable, clean, convenient hotel - STAIRS

Probably a typical Amsterdam \"small\" hotel in a former 5-6 story narrow, large house. Thus, be prepared for LOTS of stairs (no elevator) -- 2 flights just to reach the reception desk. Then 2 more curved narrow flights to floor 4 or 2 more to floor 6.Office can sell drinks and snacks for a small fee. I booked a single room which was adequate and clean, with a portable fan, small desk, and TV. A concern is the VERY slippery shower floor which hnearly caused me to slip each time. I had to hold on to the bar on the wall for my entire shower. The bathroom mirror was mounted for a 6 ft, 7 inch man, not a 5 ft, 5 inch female. Staff were friendly and helpful. Central Train Station was 2 blocks away and several Canal Tours began across the street. Lots of food businesses everywhere in closest 3 blocks, including a grocery market near this hotel.

Lost a star because even though i had the Do Not Disturb option on the door, the cleaning lady decided it was her job to bang on my door at 10 am to make sure i knew checkout was at 11 am. my alarm was set fir 10:45 and everything was packed for a long trip that i needed the extra sleep fir.

We are an older couple. We chose this hotel because of its character. The staff were very good about bringing our luggage up to our room. Up 58 stairs, the last 30 were winding stairs. The rooms were very clean. The staff very helpful and friendly. Very close to the canal cruises and central rail station.

As others have mentioned, this hotel had the basics and was fine for us for what we needed for the night. The hotel staff were very nice and helpful. Great location in city center. We had the quadruple room, so 4 twin beds and a basic bathroom. There was no ac in our particular room, so we had to choose between opening the windows for a cooler room (which meant listening to the noise of the streets below for most of the night), or having the windows closed and being too warm. We wouldn’t have slept great either way. It was fine for one night, but I don’t think I’d want that for an extended stay.
