Not the friendliest of check ins / guest interaction.

Placed in the basement room. When we got to the room, the room had a musty smell (there was a window and air-conditioning). The TV was hanging from the wall wonkily. The TV did not work and the window would not shut / lock so was open and had access to stairs / staff area.

I went to reception to mention the window and TV. The receptionist was fairly blunt and stated that they know there are faults and that I booked that basement room. I mentioned that I booked a room that I thought would be secure and would have working facilities.

In summary, the receptionist stated that I would have to pay an additional 20 euros to stay in another room. I mentioned that I thought this was unfair. The window and TV are beyond my control and that if the other rooms are empty what is the problem with allowing us another room that has a working window and TV.

The receptionist stated that we cannot upgrade to a 'room with a city view\" just because we wanted to.

The receptionist later sent someone to fix the window so we could leave the room with valuables inside however the service from the receptionist was sharp and not customer accommodating. Although we don't go away for a TV, we do appreciate the facility if it is offered.

If we had been away for more than one night, we would have cancelled our booking and gone elsewhere instead.

This is our 3rd time at the Sotel and usually we are so happy with our stay!

Unfortunately, this time we were given one of the ground floor rooms, which were much older than the upstairs rooms and could do with a urgent makeover.
The beds were comfy as usual, but we had a tiny window that went out into a square of walls.

The shower/ bathroom we were really unhappy, the shower was broken and the water sprayed out the back of the shower head with more pressure than the actual shower, along with no suitable drainage for the shower to drain into, so we were left everyday with a soaking wet bathroom floor, that the towels couldn’t even soak. We did report this twice and asked for extra towels to clean but this wasn’t actioned. We did ask if we could change to another room, but were told they were fully booked, even though the ‘rooms available’ was lit in the window.

Luckily we are both good sleepers as all 3 nights there was loud music that sounded like it was next door, this went on into the early morning, it was annoying but we did manage to ignore it, a light sleeper would not have been able to block it out.

We were really disappointed as both other times we have had a great stay, clean and tidy, which is why we chose to book again.

I’m not sure we will be back due to this inconvenience, we felt very forgotten considering this was our 3rd year here.

If you are staying here I would call ahead to make sure you are not in rooms 600\700.

I want to start off by saying the location was perfect, very conveniently located to everything. However, upon arrival, I find out that the elevator doesn’t work, and the receptionist didn’t even offer to help with the luggage’s. I had two luggage's that I needed to carry up two floors. Then, when I arrived to my room, the second you open the door the room reeks of a sewer smell. Given the price you pay for this property, more professionalism and cleanliness is expected. Another issue I had was that the heater would not heat up, it would only blow cold air.

Wouldn’t stay here again. Great location but this hotel was one of the worst and expensive I’ve stayed at. The bed was awful and had two thin foam mattresses placed on top of a bigger mattress so we felt like we were going to slide off the bed. The shower didn’t drain properly and the bathroom was very impractical and small. The room was so small, you could barely move around and unpack luggage. The stairs down to the basement were really narrow and dark so it was really hard to take luggage down there. Since the basement was underground, it also felt really damp. Overall, the location is the only good thing to offer about this place and the staff were lovely.

We booked these rooms to be close to the city and the train station. It is a perfect location for that. Otherwise the rooms are very small and access is dark and stairs are terribly steep. Neighbors were fighting in the midde of the night. It was okay for one night but I would never stay here again.

Simply the most disappointing booking I’ve ever had. Mostly the fault of Hotels.com! The hotel was booked with the need for twin beds as very clearly marked, but on arrival at the hotel the room was a double room with one bed. This was completely inappropriate but the hotel had no twin rooms left so I was stuck. Hotels.com, who brokered the booking then refused to refund the cost!! After nearly an hour of wrangling over this they agreed to refund the cost of the hotel if I agreed to paying a £105 up front charge. No charge no refund!! I eventually contacted IHG hotel of whom I’m a member, and they accommodated me for a reasonable sum. I then left Amsterdam and enjoyed a perfectly relaxed weekend in Antwerp. Hotels.com should be ashamed of their customer service and you all should be very cautious about relying on them.

So there are a lot of bad reviews for this place, but my experience was great. The room was small side, up on the 4th floor. Elevator worked great and the room was comfy and clean. It’s not a 5 star resort, but did me just fine. It is an older hotel, so don’t expect shiny and new. It was perfect for my needs and super close to the train station and trams.

Made a booking via expedia for a double bed and received a basement room with 2 single beds, broken window blinds, tv didnt work, wall sockets hanging out the wall, wall damage and stains everywhere. I complained and asked for a refund, they said we would have to wait until home and contact expedia but could change room the second day. We move to the new room... this room had windows without curtains, footprints embedded into the carpet, the toilet faced the bed and the door didn't close fully, the door weren't actually secure into the fixture either and the walls were falling apart. We got home and contacted expedia with images and told them we'd mentioned refund to reception who told us to apply via expedia... they then refused a refund when expedia contacted them. Scam artists with horrible rooms. 2 nights cost over £300. Appalling place

Shocking . Near Central Station but should not be on your books . The reception area was not inviting and looked and felt sleazy. Our rooms were inconvenient … one on the ground floor where the occupants felt it was necessary to barricade the door . Our room was in the attic and was approached… inside the room …. by very steep twisting stairs . No one to help with luggage and very difficult to negotiate . Man on reception…. not professional… Horrible place . Felt more of a brothel than a hotel -very subjective judgement but there we are ! Thankyou

The room was very filthy and small. There was hardly any space to walk besides the room. The water glasses were not clean. I could see cobweb and spiders in the room. There was no elevator to take you to the basement where my room was located. I had to use the emergency stairs to access my room and also had to take my luggage through those stairs. The stairs were so narrow that one could easily slip with the luggage. Even the staff was not at all courteous and was rude. I had a very bad experience with the property.

First Amsterdam Trip!

First trip to Amsterdam and did not know where things were but this Hotel, was walking distance between Canals, bars, and Red light district and Trains the most important part. The area was Safe and would recommend if you have kids this is a safe place as well. Highly recommend Hotel Sotel to all travelers and I also would mention area was quiet and not loud and we stayed on the first floor and the people above us you couldn’t hear them at all! Only draw back was the shower if you take a 15 min shower like me be prepared the bath room will be wet! I repeat take a fast shower. Draining system for shower was inadequate and room was wet from day 1 to Day 3. Other then that we loved our stay.

Good place since it's walkable from the central train station. But the room was incredibly small, hardly enough space to put down your suitcase between the wall and the bed to leave enough room to walk between the 2. Our room was on the 2nd floor and we had to walk up 2 flights of stairs, very narrow and curved, but at least they helped us get our luggage upstairs. In the bathroom there is no enclosure around the shower so water tends to get all over the place and we had to dry the floor in order not to get wet feet when standing by the sink or using the toilet. But great location if you want to be in the thick of things. The beds were very comfortable and it was quiet.

The hotel is in a handy location for the railway station, canal cruises and most of the attractions of Amsterdam. The staff were pleasant enough on arrival and the rooms were clean.

However, for cost of the room it had no amentities at all apart from a tv and a small coffee machine. There was no phone in the room even to connect to reception which was to prove a problem on one night in particular. Your room and reception is it. Yet the room costs the same as many hotels that have more to offer.

On one night there was a power it to the entire hotel. Have made my way to the landing I found another guest who could not find a way off the floor. Even though there were fire exit signs they appeared to come to a dead end. Only by good fortune another guest came through a door that was unarmed and no visible signs that it was a door e.g a door handle. While this was only a power cut it did concern me that in the event of a fire people would get trapped for not being able to find there way out.

The room was ridiculously small. The toilet scrubber was almost IN the shower…only separated by the shower curtain. The bathroom door had a 2 inch gap all around so there was no privacy. The staff was AWESOME but the hotel was not.

Great location and great customer service. Rooms are narrow and no lift. The front staff was very friendly and accomdated us with holding the baggage after check out. The location of the hotel is perfect and easy to find. Once again, really good customer service. Stayed for 2 nights. The rooms are pretty narrow and small with very little walking space.

I was in room 105 towards the back .. was v steep stairs old part of building but helped with luggage.

Property is in a great location in the heart of Amsterdam.Property looked promising upon entrance .However once we opened the door to the hotel room there was a sense of disappointment. Immediately the first thing we noticed was the lack of privacy in the bathroom. The door was a pane of glass , half of which was frosted ,which gave little to no privacy and was very uncomfortable. There’s was a step into the bathroom which was unmarked and unsafe . The hair drier in the bathroom was sticky and visibly dirty . The room had marks and holds in the walls , a very poor finish . The peep hole had no covering which felt like an invasion of privacy . The room was very dusty and other peoples hairs were on the bed . Once we had settled into the room we realised there was no tv remote , to which we had to look for . We eventually found the tv remote under the bed which was very dusty and dirty and had previous guests rubbish under it .Over all this was purely just a place to sleep , however we didn’t feel comfortable enough to even sleep under the duvet . Great for location but not for comfort.

Great location and the beds were comfortable but the room as a whole was very muggy and damp. Not sure if it was due to the rain that was happening at the time, but it was muggy and the room had damp smell to it. Walls could have been painted or repaired as had scuff marks and dents in it from previous people. The first front desk lady checking me in could have been more pleasant , it was as if she didn’t want to be there. But the other 2 people (another lady and a gentleman) were really friendly and helpful. Overall it was a semi good stay if the room didn’t smell from dampness.

Hotel does not have 24 hour desk. We had to be back at the hotel by 11pm as there was a power outage when we checked in and they could not issue a key card. Also there are no elevators and the stairs are very steep and narrow; challenging if you have large luggage.

Hotel was very central which was great, bed was comfy, however rooms are deceiving in the pictures, very small rooms only enough space to walk past the bed, can hear everything from neighbouring rooms, but some of the reviews on here are a bit harsh for what we paid I am happy with what we got
