The entrance on Damrak is a little obscure, and walking down the narrow hallway behind a coffee shop left us unsure of what to expect—but once inside, the experience was a pleasant surprise.

We met three different staff members during our stay and all were genuinely friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The room was small, with the bed running wall to wall, so there was no space to walk around it—one of us had to climb over the bed to reach the other side. However, the bed was extremely comfortable, very clean, and well supplied with fresh linen and pillows.

A big plus was that the window could be opened, which helped with the stuffy hotel rooms we encountered elsewhere in Europe during winter. The bathroom was compact and basic but exceptionally clean, fully functional, and the shower was excellent. Shampoo/body wash was provided, and we were amused to find the hairdryer stored in the safe.

The location is outstanding—around a five-minute walk from Centraal Station and within easy walking distance of everything we needed for our two-day stay. With a late flight, we were offered a free midday checkout or 1:30 pm for 20% of the nightly rate (about AUD$33), which was well worth it. Secure luggage storage was also available for as long as needed.

The hotel spans two buildings, making access a bit of a maze, with small lifts typical of older European buildings. Overall, excellent value for such a central location in a major European city.

The room was ridiculously small. The head and foot of the bed touched their respective walls. With two people sleeping in a king size bed, one of had to crawl over the other to go to the bathroom. Otherwise, it was fine. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was nice. The location is fabulous. Oh, and we looked in another room that was not small like ours. Did we get unlucky, or did they not tell us that the room was so small?

I would have had a far more sanitary practice, better service, and overall better experience while in jail.
Before diving into my full review, upon entering my room there was multiple small (.5-2cm) blood stains on the bed sheets and comforter. This alone was enough to persuade me not to stay the night, but this was far from my only concern.

The hotel is well placed in Amsterdam and the staff are generally helpful, but there are a number of other issues that detract from the stay. The room is lower end of acceptable but shows HEAVY signs of wear: extremely outdated (passed off as ‘stylistic’ but in reality is just entirely worn down and near useless), fixtures that squeak so loud it could be heard multiple stories down, or don’t function at all. Noise/sound proofing is a joke.

The bed is fine, though it feels like a spring loaded jack in the box. There was quite a lot of lint and unidentifiable materials spread throughout. The entire bed inspection was done prior to touching anything, as is typically done upon entering a new room. There was multiple small (0.5-2cm) blood stains on the bed sheets and comforter.

This booking is the type of booking that makes you read every tiny detail of every booking you make anywhere going forward.
If you are in Amsterdam for a short stay, plan to spend most of your time outside the room. I want to pretend this place was serviceable enough, but all the small issues stacking with extreme issues makes this impossible

The hotel is in a great location — very convenient and walkable, with easy access to public transportation. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay, which made the experience pleasant overall.

However, the room itself didn’t quite match the photos online. It’s advertised as a tribute to fashion, but in reality, it looked more like someone just threw a few decorative straps together. The essentials were there, but the bathroom was much smaller than expected, and I actually had to duck to shower.

If you’re prioritizing location and service, it’s a solid choice. Just don’t expect the room to look quite like the pictures.

The hotel was in a great location close to the train. It also had excellent air conditioning. The bathroom drain did not work and it flooded the bathroom each time you showered. Also the WiFi did not work the entire time we were there. They said floor 5 was too far from reception. But neither of the WiFi networks worked. The decor was…interesting… but I guess each room is different.

A find in Amsterdam!

This was a real find: the hotel was reasonably priced, in a convenient and safe location, and with incredibly friendly and helpful staff. There is an elevator, but as it’s a bit of a rabbit warren upstairs, you might need to switch to another one. When the person at the desk saw that I had a heavy suitcase, she moved me to a room that did t require changing elevators or climbing stairs. When I got to my room, i couldn’t open the window, and they sent someone up within a few min it es to fix it. There’s free coffee and tea in a lounge on the ground floor, and it’s an easy walk from the station (which I could see from my window) Great breakfast place a couple of doors down. The staff pride themselves on the individual decor for each room. My room was pretty bare bones, but functional with nice pillows. It would be better with more light ,and a box of tissues, but that’s a very minor issue.

The positive aspects of Hotel The Exchange Amsterdam was its location, and a fairly sized room.
The rest was just strange. The entrance looked as an old bathroom hallway, very narrow and covered with tiles. The door was just a regular old door, nothing indicating a hotel.
The reception was a very small booth, with one person helping.
The elevators and hallways were so narrow two persons had to squeeze to be able to pass. I case of an emergency I don’t think people could have been evacuated.
My room was clean, but strangely decorated with drapes in shades of brown, covering all walls. It looked depressing.
I couldn’t say I can recommend this hotel.

Whilst a very basic hotel, it was right in the centre of Amsterdam and had all our needs. Staff available 24/7 were very friendly and helpful, giving us lots of tips for places to visit. Room was very clean and we had a view over Damrak. Free tea and coffee always available by reception, and a nice cafe next door for breakfast. People were constantly arriving, so obviously a popular choice. if you are looking for a central location at a reasonable price, this is it.

We had a lovely stay at Hotel The Exchange, perfect location and very friendly staff. Always welcomed with a smile upon entry and exit of the building. Helpful advice too.

We had an issue where housekeeping had accidentally taken a sentimental item with our bedding, however, this was very very swiftly rectified in the morning by management. They had to search through all the linen but managed to find it!

We are very grateful to the team and to the hotel for making our stay comfortable and convenient.

You can’t find a better location. This hotel was half way on the busy Damrak street, between the Train Station(6min walk) and Dam Square. We stayed in rm 517 which was the top floor in the Roof Gable looking onto Damrak.
The room was quaint old world charm with exposed beams and fairly large for Europe. The bed was extremely comfortable and the place was clean.
The only drawback to the room is that it could be a bit loud at times as it faces the busy street, so we did hear some noise from late night party goers and the Tram that passes, but overall we weren’t disturbed too much.
There was lots of shopping, restaurants and attractions to sightseeing close by… all within walking distance.
The staff was very friendly and always accommodating to our request. I would definitely stay there again, and would want that same room 👌

The location is great. Just a 10 minute walk from central station.
Don’t let the entrance and lobby put you off.
The rooms are tiny but spotless. You can’t walk around the bed. You need to crawl across the bed to open the window or adjust the temperature.
The desk area works well. But there are no usb connections anywhere.
You need adapters if you’re from NA.
The shower was lukewarm.
The staff were excellent.

The location for this hotel is fantastic. Close to Central Station, offers luggage storage, convenient to so much shopping, food and tourist locations in Amsterdam. The area is safe to walk. For those not able to easily walk, the taxi stand is just across the street. There are steps in the building, but with some planning and communication, the staff was able to help with our room needs and lessen the steps taken. The staff is friendly and onsite.

Very clean and comfortable
Tall thin building typical of the old Amsterdam buildings which means access to some rooms are via stairs so be aware if you have mobility issues
Very basic look to reception and entry from the street but the rooms we stays in were good
We stayed twice here and on both occasions the reception staff were so friendly and helpful
Odd little hotel in lots of ways but would stay again !

Always found men hanging about the door.. some smoking weed which drifted inside the reception area..

Something ne also opened my door with a key without knocking..

Other guests could be heard talking etc so kept me awake a few nights..

I’d recommend using another hotel to be fair

This was a great place to stay for a quick, two night stay in Amsterdam. A quick walk from the train station with spacious room and comfortable bed. The room could have been cleaner (a few hairs in the shower) but nothing major. We did have two inconveniences while staying, the first day the water was turned off all day due to some road work. Out of the hotels power but a bit inconvenient. Second was the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night.

Overall would recommend for ease, and first time visitors.

The rooms smelled interesting and I couldn't tell if it was the room or the bathroom. My friend said that in her room her sheets were dirty, and she was also upset with the cleanliness of her bathroom. There are no refrigerators, and even though it has an elevator there are some rooms you still have to walk up or down a flight (if you intend to have bulky or heavy luggage. Staff was friendly/helpful, but unfortunately was not able to check us in due to some system failure. Great feature is that it's close to the main train station and decently central in Amsterdam, but you will walk past the entrance it's a small \"door\" with a sign above it between a busy business street.

Location is great but hotel is undesirable. You are paying for the location not accommodation. The room overall spacious.
Walls are thin so you hear next door. The bathroom is absolutely awful. Teeny tiny. No mirror in the room to use when bathroom is occupied. The lighting in the room is awful.
Don’t bring big suitcases if staying here. Elevators are very small.

A strange hotel, old building, odd shaped rooms. I had to pay £280 for one night to stay here and it was just not good value. They say each room is designed like a super model and each room has its own unique design, my room was a small room that was entirely white. Bed against the wall, strange pokey small bathroom with a tiny little shower in the corner. No super model design there, not sure why they even mentioned it.

That said, the room had good air conditioning, the shower worked well and the bed was surprisngly comfortable, even if it wasn't quite level and was up against a window.
