I stayed at this hotel for four nights in March 2026. The hotel is very cool, as I'm sure you have read that it's a former prison. The location is not the most central, but it's very easy to walk to downtown, and we found it to be perfectly fine. The tram runs right by the front door, so you can easily use public transportation to the other side of the city if needed.
The complimentary breakfast and dinner are absolutely amazing. I don't think I've ever stayed at a hotel that has complimentary dinner every night. I didn't use the gym, so can't comment on that. Overall an incredible value. I would be very likely to stay here again the next time I come to Helsinki.

We didn’t enjoy the dinner as much, as only one option for a main course, which was average. Salads and sides were average too. However due to the good value, the dinner was still a nice thing to be offered.

We ate dinner at the hotel on 2 occasions as it was included and suited our plans. It was a buffet and perfectly pleasant, but not exceptional. Fika (afternoon tea and cake) was a lovely touch and very welcome on a cold day.

The number 4 tram stops right outside and takes you directly to the city centre at least every 7 minutes.

The hotel is very quirky being a converted prison! Cells have been converted to rooms & are very comfortable. The staff are excellent & attentive. The food is traditional & very good. Breakfast has a lot of choice & dinner was included if you had what they served for that evening which we did. All in all a lovely stay. The rest of Helsinki is reachable o the tram system which is reasonable & regular.

The conversion of this former gaol into a hotel has been creative and innovative.The location is convenient to the tram, waterfront and local restaurants. Our room was large, incredibly quiet and super comfortable. The inclusion in the tariff of breakfast, afternoon tea and the evening meal made it excellent value for money and added to the “ homely” environment they have successfully created. The staff were friendly and very helpful. I cannot recommend this hotel more highly and wouldn’t hesitate to return.

The hotel would be amazing if it was so hot in Helsinki this week. I reserved a superior double with a king bed. It was a large, beautifully decorated room that was hot and humid. Ugh! I never checked if it had air-conditioning. I know that they don't need it most of the year, but even with the fan I got from the front desk, it was terribly hot. The windows don't open. It was hard to sleep if you are sweaty. Other than that, everything else waa great. Breakfast was excellent and dinner was a great savings for the long vacation we were on. There is a tram right outside to take you wherever you wanted to go. I would stay her again at a cooler time of year.

I have travelled the world extensively for over 6 decades and have very rarely come across such an incredibly good value for money place as this hotel and one where the staff are happy to accommodate your requests and do so with a smile. There is an included breakfast (7am to 10am), afternoon tea (3pm to 5pm) and dinner (6pm to 8pm). This is a full of character place which is extremely well located. Tram 4 drops you right at its doorstep.

A great location for anybody visiting the city as a tourist. The tram stop at the entrance brings you to the centre (but it's a easy 10 min walk) and also will bring you to the ferry terminal, the main train station to change for the airport. Home hotel Katajanokka was a great find in Helsinki. It was a very interesting hotel because of its history as a former prison but it has been given modern rooms and communal areas so it is now a stylish place to stay. Breakfast was excellent in quality and choice every day and the light evening meal we also had once and that was good too. The hotel is just a 10min walk into the centre of Helsinki, with the marina even closer. I would not hesitate to stay here again if I return to Finland.
