Be aware, when you book and pay booking, there’s no mention of a $250 security deposit. You get that notice days before check in. You’re told it will be returned after 48hrs (2 days). I checked out Sunday morning after only staying on the property 12 hours, AND DEPOSIT HAS STILL NOT BEEN RETURNED. The place is good, location is great, communication is lackluster, and the elevators weren’t working during our stay either. Luggage was dragged up the stairs.

The room was clean and all the staff were very helpful and friendly. I will say the room was clean and cleaned regularly. The pictures on Expedia are deceiving. The building needs some remodeling and the picture look like they were taken when the place was built. The pool wasn't working the last two days and was cloudy and a little green. The elevator was also out of service. Not that that was an issue but if you can't do stairs and you are on the third floor it is something to be aware of. Our hot tub wasn't working, but the staff got right on it. Staff again was perfect.

Starting with the good… housekeeping was fantastic and we loved how walkable the neighborhood was surrounding the hotel. We felt safe walking around with our family of 4 and enjoyed the 2 different pools. The gardens were beautiful and the pet turtle in the pond was a favorite for the children.

Now the negative… the beach is completely trashed by sargassum (brown seaweed) and the resulting smell is horrible. From the moment you step out of your taxi to every time you open your front door, you are assaulted by the rotting smell of the decomposing piles of sargassum that sit along this section of the beach. Due to the nature of the shoreline, it accumulates really bad in front of this hotel, so don’t count on eating at the beachside restaurant or enjoying time on the beach if you come during the summer months. I recognize that sargassum is a problem over the summer months along all of the Maya Riviera, but other hotels along Playa seem to be able to manage the sargassum better than this particular location.

In our particular unit, the washer didn’t work and we had to keep prompting the staff to get maintenance to fix it. Every time we called, they acted like they were surprised about the situation. It finally got fixed half way through the stay. Then 2 out of the 4 TVs in our 3 bedroom condo didn’t work, and the AC in the one bedroom needed fixed. The elevator on the south set of beachfront condos didn’t work the whole week we were there.

La piscina estaba muy hermosa ,todo está muy lujoso, cuenta con todas las comodidades, por la noche se mira espectacular la vista, de hecho todo funcionaba muy bien, todo muy limpio, el personal es muy atento todo el tiempo me estuvieron ayudando muy amables, me encanta cada detalle que tienen dentro de él los cuadros los asientos toda la decoración del interior y el exterior, y tiene una vista muy hermosa, definitivamente me volveré a quedar en un futuro con ellos

Our ocean front condo was amazing but unfortunately the sargassum ruined our stay. The staff were very friendly and tried to help by transferring us to a new room but it didn’t suit our needs. If you see sargassum at all on the live view camera, do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere! It is unfortunately beyond the control of the resort. If there was no sargassum this would be a great place to stay! Very centrally located and walkable!

Eric met us at the door and he was so friendly the whole trip. The cleaning staff were so kind and the front desk were very professional. They had upgraded our room without asking for it and the trip was remarkable. It felt so nice to walk into a cold space after the hot days. The only slight minor downsides but worth mentioning in the review was the living room ac worked way better than the room ones so we ended up sleeping in the living room a lot. And the toilets were meh. We had issues flushing and would often need to take the lid off the top to ensure they worked properly but it really wasn’t a concern. The beds were comfortable. The staff again was so kind. My son loved the fish and the turtles. The pools where great and the hot tub was a joy to use despite the heat and humidity. I would highly recommend this property. I felt it was in a good location and with the doors shut we couldn’t hear any party noise. We spent nearly two weeks there and for the price it was very affordable. And Eric, thank you I really appreciated talking to him!

We stay in Playa del Carmen often and have tried many hotels. Let's start with great location. Then spacious rooms with many amenities. Full kitchen, washer and dryer, bottled water, great beds and pillows. Ours had a Jacuzzi. Quiet, great beds and pillows. We have been there before and will book again

Of the condo hotels, this one was the closest to the water. That was nice and convenient. The rooms were pretty plain. It had what you needed, just no \"wow\" factor. The view from the side was just ugly buildings. If you got on the roof, you had a good view of the water, just not from your room unless you were in the back of the hotel (which we were not, we were in the front - further away from the water).

We went to stay at El Taj from May 7 to May 15. The property is beautiful and quiet. We booked a 2 bedroom with rooftop area. We BBQd a few times and relaxed in the shaded pallapa. I made friends with the Turtle, so that was cool. We booked our trip during Sargassum season so of course the beach was unaccessible and stinky, no fault of the hotel. Many people worked long hours everyday trying to keep up with cleaning the beach. The staff was so accommodating, giving us beach chairs cooler, towels and umbrella and a ride to and from a great beach close by. Shout out to Eric and Elijardo(?, sorry if i messed up the name), the Bellmen who took great care of us. I would stay again, just earlier in the year!

Remote in room did not work, attempted to have it replaced multiple times and it never was. Ran out of body wash 2 days into our 6 day stay, again attempted multiple times to have body wash refilled and it never was. Check out day I was trapped in the elevator for almost 30 minutes. I banged on the door texted my driver and he went into the office to let them know and NO ONE helped. My partner was able to free me only to see an employee right outside the door watering the plants. He never made an effort to help.

The property lost power for our last evening. When we asked for water bottles they said they had none and the water would be fixed in a few hours, no water or power in the morning. No notice from the hotel. Also the rooftop amenity is not attached to the room. It also has no beach access, which isn’t super clear. Staff was not super helpful when asking for assistance with curtesy shuttles, giving differing and vague information. The website indicates they have a spa and a gym, but both are not on site. Very misleading.

I was very pleased with the family condo I stayed in. It had everything we needed, was comfortable, complete kitchen, even a washer for the clothes.

I was dissapointed when I learned at check-in that they come to clean only every 3 days and if you want clean towels outside of those days you need to pay 15 USD and order them 24 hs in advance. On top of that one of the days they were supposed to come to clean they did not come, did not replace towels, toilet paper, tissue, shampoo, conditioner and soap. Gladly the front desk gathered some towels and tissue for us till next day.

The receptionist that registered us the first day was not nice. She seemed aggravated by us refusing to wear a 24/7 bracelet that she wanted to put on us and said we could not take it off during our whole vacation so security would not give us any problems to get into the building. I requested to just have them in my purse instead, which seemed to irritate her.

The rest of the staff we interacted with were always pleasant and helpful, and never once were we asked to show the bracelet in question.

If you are going for a beach and pool keep looking. The pools are small the beach is nonexistent the hot tub is not heated.

We were offered a golf cart ride to a beach but never did it. The front desk lady was very aloof and dismissive. Accommodations are nice.

If you plan on not spending time at the resort then this is the place.

Tree’s need to be trimmed, I kept hitting my head on the low branches. Beach view obstructed with overgrown trees. Bathrooms need more towels and soap/shampoo.
Otherwise, property is absolutely beautiful! Highly recommend for a family of 6+!

I was not able to stay at the hotel because the US state department advised Americans not to visit Mexico at the time of my reservation. The cartels were fighting at the time . I felt unsafe and the hotel would not refund my money.

Very nice condo style rooms with a major grocery store about a 15 mn walk - so making our own meals was a bonus. Staff friendly, on point and all speak solid English (Making up for my terrible Spanish ability.) Housekeeping shows up when you want them. Location is close to many of the more famous bars on the famous 5th Ave strip. Pool area nice, but small by \"resort\" standards. It's enough to keep young kids happy. Also doesn't get a lot of sun. Ocean access here, but this part of beach has major erosion so plan on walking down the street either North or South 15/20 minutes to find more of that classic Playa sand.

The location, cleanliness and customer service was excellent. There is an Oceanside and a beachside to the resort. If you book beachside, there isn’t an elevator. Just so people are aware if they have mobility issues. Rooms are generous in size. The beach is a fishing dock, so they have a shuttle to another beach. Would stay here again.

Also does not have any beach so if you like to walk along the sand / shore line, you cant here.

First of all we stayed in unit 315 so I can not comment on the other Suites on the property. The El Taj is rated as a five-star Resort and wow where we shocked that it is. Our suite was a huge disappointment. Run down, dishwasher not working, gap in refrigerator seal that made everything in the fridge wet and water from air conditioning dripping from ceiling. Oh and the water cooler had a problem with the water freezing so we couldn't get any water out of it. Also if you're looking for a beach this Resort isn't it. Unfortunately the beach has be completely washed away. Now having said that the staff was absolutely wonderful and helped us as much as they could but the units are individually owned so need to be updated and repaired by the owner of the unit. Overall the place is in need of a renovation. The restaurant at the front of the resort is a nice place to sit and enjoy watching the ocean and the food was definitely decent. I would have given it a two-star but the staff was really awesome and did as much as they could especially Yaz. Maybe I should mention unit 315 was a two bedroom Ocean View penthouse which I'm sure was wonderful when it was new.

We stayed in room 532, right off the main entrance. A bit loud at times given people coming and going in the evening. The room itself was very spacious, very clean offering lots of amenities. Big bathroom and bedroom with a comfortable bed. We had a complimentary small bag of coffee, which was nice! Pool towels are provided and you can swap them often. 2 pools are available - we found the one across the street, not the one facing the ocean, was nicer. There is no beach in front of the hotel but a 5 min walk will get you there. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and the staff was great.

The property is good for the money. The problem is the terrible management. No clue, apparently, that the hotel manager is responsible for the guests' happiness.
The receptionist who attended me leaked my personal private information to a gang of scammers and I got calls and texts messages right away from the 'police chief' apparently. The messages seemed to come from the Taj's reception, but they did not. It was an attempt at extortion. I only gave my information to one person, so it is clear what happened. Beware, scammers give commissions to hotel receptionists for your personal details. It's the real Mexico.

The condo has a nice terrace to have breakfast, but every day of the week I was there, repairs were ongoing, and instead of the sound of running water and bird songs, the air was filled with the screech of an angle grinder and other power tools.

I asked for a quiet condo and they gave me the one above the boiler room. Almost impossible to sleep at night with the pumps going. It's good I didn't need the A/C, because it makes a hell of a racket too.

I complained to no effect. I was told there would be a big investigation about the leak of private information, but I never heard back.

Maybe you will get better luck. But if it happened to me, it could happened to you.

This place is NOWHERE near a beach, despite what pictures might suggest. The nearest beach is about a 15 minutes walk away.

The elevator was down the entire time and we had to move our luggage up and down 3 flights. They don't clean the rooms or change your towels, so if you're used to nicer places, this is not it. The shower also has sand in it, so not thoroughly cleaned. Location was okay, but would stay at a Marriott next time instead, higher quality and more predictable. The service was okay, but no one used any logic except the supervisor, they tried to charge us for a ride that never came at the airport - after we were waiting there for an hour. Would not recommend this place, it's not worth your money and I'm not sure why it gets good reviews.

We went there for my parents 50th anniversary. The elevator was broken, and my parents who were celebrating couldn't walk up the stairs. They did not have an extra room that we could trade until a few days later. Luckily my brother was staying there and we could trade with him for a few days and then they could get us a good room where the elevator was on the other side. We had an excellent stay and really enjoyed it there. It would have been nice though if they had attempted to fix the elevator once in the two weeks we were there though.

My experience with El Taj was great! We were there in September.The service, the room and its amenities were incredible. It has a private parking garage. Room was clean, we had a family condo 2 twin beds in one room and a queen in another-very comfortable beds, full kitchen and living room to relax after a long day. It is walking distance to the beach and restaurants near by. Totally recommend El Taj and we would totally choose this hotel if we visit Playa del Carmen once again. Thank you!

this was the most accomadating stay ever. the people are amazing. the room was gorgeous and the staff right on point. i cannot say enough. unfortunately my husband had a stroke while we were there. but the staff got an ambulance, got me to the hospital dailey and really helped through a trying time. i am so gratful to them. will always stay here when i am in playa del carmen

This is a great place on a quiet, quaint street right on the beach and walking distance (5 minutes) to great restaurants and cafes, shops. Both pool areas are great: the main pool is heated and right by the beach; the second pool has a relaxing vibe.
The hotel has access to a gym (2 min walk) that offers great yoga classes. The staff is super friendly; special thanks to Eric for connecting us with amazing excursions guy Pedro. We had a two bedroom penthouse with a terrace. Great views from the terrace and loved the spaciousness. Overall, highly recommend.

Overall it was a great experience:

(-) Mosquitos mostly due to plants and season and we had wasp but it has been taken care.

Not much of a beach view, my unit was in the back. I rated due to TV’s did not work or coffee machine. Also note there are no elevators. The jacuzzi is separate and you have to walk upstairs to use balcony. Overall it’s a nice property and at walkable distance to many things.

Condo is very nice and clean. Staff is spectacular. Pools just ok, not a a lot of seating and surprisingly very cold. Hot tub in main pool is not heated? Pool and hot tub on street side is good but only a few seats. Overall, due to the awesome staff, location and cleanliness it is a great place to stay!

This was an awesome home away from home. It's a small apartment right in the heart of Playa del Carmen. The staff is so friendly and helpful. No dining options on site during rainy season. Worth every penny.
