Unfortunately, the hotel looks very different from the photos that are advertised online. It is actually a very old hotel that seems to have gone through only a very light renovation, and the pictures appear to be heavily edited.

The breakfast was also disappointing and far from what one would expect. It included only one cup of juice, one cup of coffee, and one croissant. There were no fresh options such as fruit or oranges. I would not really consider this a proper hotel breakfast.

Another major issue was the internet. There is practically no usable Wi-Fi in the hotel. The connection is extremely weak and barely works.

Most of the hotel staff were very kind, polite, and helpful. However, the receptionist named Ayfa was not pleasant or welcoming at all, which stood out compared to the rest of the team.

Overall, despite the kindness of most of the staff, I would not choose to return to this hotel again.

Amazing stay as always. Outstanding rooms with a great view of the canals. Very comfortable beds and bathroom. Plenty of space in the rooms. The only thing they need are wine glasses, they don't have any in the hotel! That is a travesty for Paris!

The best part of Le Citizen Hotel was its quaint, walkable location along Canal Saint-Martin, surrounded by great coffee shops and restaurants. The room was spacious, but a persistent urine smell, likely from the A/C, made it unpleasant. While generally clean, the bathroom felt dirty, with mildew in the shower and a broken shower door causing water to spill everywhere.

We had a relocation to Hotel Oratio (30 minutes away) due to renovations. The staff there didn’t seem aware of our reservation, and when we returned, our room wasn’t ready and construction was still ongoing. We had to leave our bags with construction workers since no staff was present.

Checkout was chaotic—late at night, we were suddenly told we owed money, but the staff couldn’t explain why. The next morning, it turned out to be city tax, but their card reader wouldn’t work, and the staff was unhelpful.

They did refund one night, and Chaime was great, but overall, poor communication and maintenance issues made this a frustrating stay. Hopefully, post-renovations, service improves.

I loved the canal view, especially with the changing autumn leaves. There is a lock directly in front of the hotel and you can watch it operate when boats go through. Plus, if you like to people watch, this is the place. Loved all the amenities, comfy bed, nice shower and hot water pot for tea or coffee. Best part of the stay though was the friendly and helpful staff!

This hotel was close to the train station (15 mins walk max) so it was perfect for one last night in Paris. Easy to get to from travels by train from the French countryside and easy to get to the RER for the airport the next day. The neighborhood is fantastic, lots of great bars and restaurants and the canal. The bed was soooo comfortable.

I was surprised with this property. It reallly was not the same as what was advertised. The advertisement clearly said there was a restaurant and people said the food was great. They had a bar but no restaurant. They also advertised that there was an airport shuttle but there was not. I found this to be a quirky and odd property. The area of Paris was not my favourite- lots of graffiti and not amazing stores and restaurants. The room had some issues with the lights not working in the bathroom and the cupboard door for the fridge was falling of the hinge. The bed was comfortable and the bedding nice! It also had a very strong smell from an oil diffuser which was way too strong I ended up locking it in a cupboard to try to stop the smell. We were only there for one night to catch our plane but I would not have stayed longer and wouldn’t recommend it to others. Have stayed in much nicer hotels in Paris for the same price or less. Not sure who wrote all the good reviews for this property or when but I’m sorry I can’t agree.

Fun neighborhood with lovely shops and cafes. The Metro was a short walk and got us everywhere we wanted to go. The staff is awesome, always pointing us in the right direction. It was also such a pleasure to sit in their cafe, enjoy the delicious coffee, juices, fruits and croissants, and especially the lively and fun conversation! Be sure to try and catch the boats using the lock system on the canal in front of the hotel-definitely not something you see every day! The area was very lively and the people you meet were great, just be sure to use the earplugs that are provided. The street scene could be a little loud if you're an early to bed kind of person. Would definitely stay again!

After reading several reviews and viewing the online pictures, I decided to book this hotel for my Mom's 71st birthday trip. Upon checking in, imagine my shock and dismiss, that nothing was as it appeared online. The rooms were extremely 'tiny' and the outside noise was unbearably loud. They switched our room to the top floor. I'm guessing this was an upgrade... Mind you, we travelled halfway across the world from the United States. We tried our best to make the new room work, however, the loud outside noise was even worse, not to mention, the room was cold! They had two space heaters, which weren't able to properly heat the room. After a few hours, we decided to leave. As I was helping the Uber driver load our luggage, my Mom fell, while existing the building. They have a small incline that is a complete tripping hazard. The owner, Sophie, refused us any type of refund. I would STEER CLEAR of this establishment, if you are looking for an actual relaxing night's stay, while in Paris. Simply HORRIBLE!

Le Citizen is a magnificent hotel in an edgy neighborhood. It is bright, clean and extremely user friendly. The staff, Marvin, Lauren, chef Adelie, Chaim and the rest are the best, most accommodating, efficient friendly group we have met in our extensive travels. Owner Sophie is available and present. The food in the bar restaurant is as good as fancy French restaurants, We couldn't rate this hotel and restaurant any higher.

We only wish we could have stayed longer but it was just a short visit between flights.

Met my daughter for a long weekend in Paris and Le Citizen Hotel exceeded our expectations. Room was a good size for two people, with in-room coffee maker and mini fridge, sitting area, and large, very comfy bed. Nice area by the canal with eateries, cafes nearby. Friendly, helpful staff and good scrambled eggs and fresh juices (loved the apple/turmeric) at breakfast. Would stay again if I have the chance.

Nice, small hotel right on the canal in a trendy part of Paris. Lovely staff, and typical French (mostly pastry) breakfast, but with hot options too. Not too far from metro (5-6 mins walk).

Room was a bit on the small side, but the clue was in the title - the room I booked was called 'The Small One'. They do have bigger rooms as well.

Free water was a nice touch also. Definitely recommended.

Our stay at Le CITIZEN was terrific. Looks like Expedia charged me a lot more than my final hotel bill...multiple hundreds of Euros! Will look into that soon. But back to Le Citizen. We were greeted by Jazz music in the cafe upon arrival. The entry door to the hotel is also the door to their small cafe with sidewalk seating. You will be a bit confused upon arrival but that will soon pass. Amazing staff ready to help you from the start. Only 12 rooms in this quaint hotel. Located in a hip neighborhood close to one of the best cheese shops in Paris and only two blocks from the Jacque Bonsergeant metro station that will get you anywhere in Paris you want to go. We arrived in Paris to the Gare l’est station and easily walked to the canal and then the hotel. We had one floor of rooms (two rooms) that connected. Very cool interior for both rooms with fresh flowers, water and sparkling water in the fridge is complementary, €3 for each other item, very nice tv works fine for a bit of nenes or football viewing before bed, plenty of plugs and one adaptor a for your devices. The stairwell is tight and quirky. Elevator is in great working order. Just really liked this hotel. Would stay here again, for sure.

Adorable small hotel convenient to metro.

This was a great hotel. We were welcomed warmly upon arrival and had a nice breakfast in the restaurant as we waited for our room to be ready (we arrived several hours before check in and were still allowed to access to half of our rooms). The rooms (we had two, a whole floor to ourselves) were lovely and very comfortable. Air conditioning was a major bonus as during our stay it was extremely hot in Paris. It was so nice to come back to the cool rooms. Showers were nice. The walk to the metro wasn’t too long and the area around has several bakeries and restaurants. All the hotel service people were helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend this place!

great alternative hotel option, even better staff

This is a lovely little hotel above a great little cafe right on the Canal St. Martin. The entire staff was very accommodating during a heat wave while traveling with our infant. It's in a trendy location probably better for those traveling without children but just fine for those of us who need to do so, and I'm sure really cool for those who don't. They've got a fantastic complimentary breakfast. It's a 15 minute walk to Gare du Nord or Gare de L'est. They've also got a lift. It's not a 5-star hotel (you likely wouldn't be looking in this area if that's what you wanted), but it's a great option for those looking to see a different side of Paris and experience something new in the city.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Le Citizen. I was only in Paris for one night on business and I emailed ahead of my arrival to request an early check in since I was arriving at 10am. When I got to the hotel I was immediately handed a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice, I only had to wait ten minutes for my room and there was no extra charge for the early check in. They even upgraded me to a bigger room! The breakfast was home cooked, free and delicious, and the rooms very comfortable. The neighborhood is so close to many shops and restaurants. I will definitely be back to stay upon my next visit to Paris. Merci!

Le Citizen is a sweet boutique hotel right on Canal St. Martin, a lively part of the city. It is surrounded by cafes and bar, has relatively easy access to the metro at Goncourt and Republique and anyway the best thing to do in Paris is to walk!

The staff are friendly, breakfast is adequate, the room was small but perfectly formed. The only downside was a persistent smell of drain in the bathroom, which began to permeate the room. Some repairs needed, I think!

But we'd still go again.

Amazing stay!

My stay at The Citizen was just what I needed. I splurged and got the bigger room and I really appreciated the spaciousness. Loved the view of the canal from the windows. The room and bathroom were clean and the bed very comfortable (king sized). The entire staff was so accommodating and sweet. Breakfast was lovely (got a croissant, fresh squeezed OJ and avocado toast with a poached egg on top). The St Martin Canal area is super cute and has a hipster, Brooklyn vibe. I was able to easily walked to the Marais and even Les Halles area (about 15-30 minute walk). Highly recommend this place!

There were limited English speaking staff but they went over and beyond to help us.

Was disappointed that the hotel was further away from the Eiffel Tower than what was list on Expedia but we went everywhere via train and bus on same metro card.

Very good French toast!!

Room was small but doable as we were out most of the day. Mini bar was not included, just the cold water and tea was inclusive, but surprised by the free international calls. Note there were additional city tax that was not included in my original Expedia total.

Bring walking shoes for all of Paris!

The only negative thing I can say which is not really a issue is the location to key sites in Paris. If you're in Paris for sightseeing you will either need a rental car, a taxi, or metro. We used the metro for our transportation. The Republique station is within walking distance & has multiple lines. Beware of scammers at the metro kiosk that offer to help you. The kiosks have multiple language selections. There's no parking for the hotel or free parking in the adjacent block. I used a nearby hospitals parking garage which also charged. Now the good stuff. The staff was extremely helpful & very courteous. They went as far as to walk a couple blocks to that hospital parking with me to ask a parking attendant that didn't speak English some questions. Housekeeping cleaned our room everyday & the rooms looked immaculate. Additionally the stocked a mini fridge everyday with items. This was included in the price. Breakfast is also included & was delicious. I really can't say enough good things about the staff & overall hotel experience.

The hotel is close to metro station with just few minutes walk. The room is small yet cozy and the bed is comfortable. We particularly love the paris street view from the room.
We stayed on 6th floor but still a bit noisy in the morning. Light sleepers should request for higher floor.
The staff are nice and they give prompt replies to emails.
The minibar is FREE and we enjoyed juice, beer, soft drinks and snacks provided.
We had a pleasant stay in le citizen hotel.

We were disappointed to be billed for the price of a larger room and given a smaller room to stay in. My husband caught the error and they corrected the price. The room was tiny, shower was excellent,and breakfast was super...especially the fresh squeezed orange juice and croissant and coffee. We were only staying one night. If we had to stay more, the room size was unacceptable.

My family and I felt very welcomed here, almost as if we were family. The staff were very helpful, cheerful and friendly (basically they were almost every point of the Boy Scout Law). We had forgotten a power adaptor for our electronic portables, and they had one on hand. They also a free-to-use iPad with the room, and a 5 Euro/day phone for Paris. Beverages in the mini-bar (beer and carbonated beverages) were free, as well. All in all, very thoughtful ideas.

The room was beautiful and looked out onto the street. Road noise could have been a problem, but ear-plugs were also supplied in the bathroom. Once again, very thoughtful. Breakfast was also included, and was more than sufficient and quite tasty.

A beautiful designer retreat

The hotel is beautifully decorated, light and airy. It is incredibly clean and the staff are the friendliest and most helpful I have ever come across in France in my more than a dozen visits to the French capital. The area around Canal St Martin in the 10eme is very cool and chic. The French call it \"bobo\" - bourgeois bohemian - and it is a good fit for the hip area the hotel is in.

Small and perfectly formed

Had a lovely stay in Paris in this hotel. Rooms are small, but that's a given in Paris, and have only rated comfort at 4 because the bed was a bit squishy in the middle and we kept rolling into each other - other than that, it was all high-quality, thoughtful and above and beyond standard. Great breakfast, nice glass of wine in the evening, free minibar with some nice things in, excellent shower and towels etc, soft good-quality bedding, and very friendly and helpful staff. Very nice location right on the canal with some great bars and restaurants around, and only 10 mins walk to Place de la Republique with about 5 metro lines and the Marais only another 5 mins walk. Highly recommended.

Great stay

Very pleasant stay. Hotel in a lively location, away from the main tourist areas. Room not very big, not much space around the bed. The included breakfast was pretty decent. Nice to have the included mini-bar too. Unfortunately the phone in the room was broken, so didn't get a chance to make use of the free worldwide phone calls. Staff very good, all pleasant and helpful.

Wouldn't stay anywhere else!

Outstanding customer service rivals if not surpasses that of big luxury hotels. My stay was six nights. Close to metro. Free long distance phone calls, breakfast included as well as wine hour in the evening. Free use of iPad and free wifi. Bed very comfortable. Nice size bathroom. Good restaurants nearby. Don't pass up staying at this wonderful boutique hotel!

An Perfect Week

I've been to Paris before,but had never been in charge of making arrangements. I was looking for a small, modern, affordable, non-kitchy hotel in an interesting neighborhood. Le Citizen was all of that. In fact, largely due to the wonderful staff, this hotel far exceeded our expectations.The staff helped me make dinner reservations for several chic eateries before I arrived. They advised us (when asked) while we were there and were willing and generous about researching on our behalf. There was breakfast each morning (long hours 7:30-11.... great if you've got jetlag or sleep in) which was made as we requested it. The room itself was small... we may have has the smallest in the hotel (Room 5), but it was bright, and clean, and very comfortable. We had a pretty view of the canal (all the rooms do). I would definitely return. Many thanks to Laure, Patrick and John (at the front desk and via email) in particular.

Great hotel and area

A boutique style small hotel directly overlooking Canal St Martin. The area has an arty bohemian neighbourhood feel, which feels authentic Parisian and not touristy, and there are many interesting shops, bars and bistrots nearby. A metro stop is a short walk away. The hotel staff are helpful and friendly, and make good restaurant recommendations and reservations. The included breakfast and loan of an ipad are an added bonus. I would highly recommend this hotel, and the area.

Beautiful canal-side hotel in boho HQ!

Lovely location - very trendy. The hotel is beautiful, and modern, although overpriced. Make the most of the extras - breakfast, drinks and nibbles at 6pm and the minibar are all included in the room price. Staff ok, although not super helpful.

An excellent place to stay in Paris

We have only just returned from Paris and have extremely fond memories of our stay in the Citizen Hotel. The staff could not have been more generous and friendly and the hotel itself is situated in a fascinating part of the city - next to one of its many canals. Because we were the last in booking a room for our stay, it was explained that our room would be the smallest and it was. The room was well designed, however and so was perfectly acceptable and comfortable and the extras, such as a kettle in the room with tea and coffee (first time in France despite holidaying there for over 25 years!) and a free minibar made our stay even more enjoyable. What a delight too to find that breakfast was included in the price.

We thought the generosity of the approach of this hotel was brilliant and greatly enhanced our stay. Add to this free phone calls to anywhere in the world because of the tech-savvy management's choice of internet based phone provider and the loan of an ipad with free wifi for the duration of the stay and we could not have wished for more. What a refreshing experience after staying in countless french hotels where every item is added to the bill and, though available, everything comes at a price.

Let's hope that the success of the Citizen Hotel leads to more expansion and perhaps a bit of imitation by other hotels - France needs more places like this!

Good hotel for the price

Outstanding service. We checked in and received an IPad upon arrival, for use in the room. The room was nice, but Very small. the only real complaint was the location. Not exactly convenient to anywhere in Paris. The metro was several minutes away and not a nice stop, either. Otherwise, an execellent hotel for the price.

Great small modern hotel in a lively neighbourhood

A visitor to this hotel will experience a real working Paris neighbourhood. Expect a lively neighbourhood full of a variety of local cafes and restaurants.
The staff were always courteous and helpful, even when I attempted to murder their language with my limited and clumsy French.
The rooms were small, which is normal for Paris, but they were new, modern and well appointed and everything worked. Guests were supplied with an ipad to access all the hotel and local area information and anything from the Internet, this proved very helpful. Also to our surprise the tariff included mini bar and all local and international landline telephone calls.
The hotel is close, within 5 minutes walk, to 2 metro stations so it was quick and cheap, to get to almost everywhere in the city.
Overall really enjoyable and intimate. Highly recommended.

Lovely, gracious hotel.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Any request was granted with pleasure and their knowledge of Paris and the area was extensive. They gave wonderful recommendations for dining. The breakfast, included, was a lovely, full breakfast with homemade baked goods and fresh-squeezed orange juice as well as eggs made on the spot.

Not the usual touristy experience - in a good way!

The staff were so helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Room was comfortable although there was a bit of street noise - we were on the second floor. The breakfast was great, so nice to have freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice, differently made up yogurts and eggs cooked to order. Lots of nice breads too. It was a nice touch to have little treats awaiting you in your room after a hard days sightseeing. Our only complaint there was only 1english channel ( CNN ) on tv. The iPad we were given had a few older films but not all complete. They should have a movie channel on the tv at least. Nice neighbourhood beside the canal, we really felt we were staying amid real Parisians - lots of little bars,bistros and local shops. Would stay here again and recommend it to friends.

Great location, wonderful staff

This is a wonderful, clean and very centrally-located small hotel in Paris. My husband and I stayed 3 nights and we have no complaints. The service was simply outstanding and there was so much to do nearby. In addition, getting to the sights in central Paris was easy. We even had a view of the Eiffel tower from our room!

cool boutique hotel

really convenient for gard du nord and metros close by.
small rooms but so well arranged that all you need is there. lots of good off the beaten track restaurants nearby .great design hotel probably not suitable if you want something big and grand .I would use again. probably not good for spending hours in the hotel room but great as a crash pad.
