Our stay at the Amsterdam Wiechman was wonderful. This old converted canal house felt very authentic, down to the steep narrow stairway (adds to the charm). Our room had a bay window overlooking the canal that was so enjoyable to sit at. The bed was great. The bathroom was small and a bit awkward but not unexpected for a European bathroom. The location was perfect with a Euro Q R park nearby. It was easy walking distance from anything and everything you'd want to see while in Amsterdam. My absolute favorite part of this hotel is the breakfast. The selection was amazing - we absolutely loved sitting by the windows and watching \"the world go by\" as we ate. Definitely recommend staying here!

While the hotel itself is nice, the rooms were kind of lacking and decor and charm like the rest of it. Some things in the bathroom could have been upgraded and I was standing in 3 inches of water by the time I was done with my shower. I let them know about it, and they were supposed to go fix it, but they never did. The breakfast was decent. They did help us out by letting us leave our bags a few times before and after checking in and out.

Nice Hotel but not very comfortable

The location is great, it is a very beautiful and old hotel. But there is not air conditioning and in summer it was so hot that it made the stay unbearable. Besides, we stayed in the 3rd floor with no lyft and the stairs so tiny that we really struggled to carry our suitcases.

Lovely centrally located hotel

Lovely old building in a perfect location for sightseeing and shopping. Very steep steps unsuitable for infirm trying to take their bags upstairs to rooms on any of the four floors. Otherwise perfect for the price.

Pros: clean, friendly staff, breakfast area was beautiful and good variety. Free hot drinks.
Cons: the stairs will kill you . I kid you not. I don’t have mobility issues and still found carrying luggage up the stairs very dangerous. Amsterdam has narrow stair cases but from a safety standpoint there should be either a lift or old school pulley to hoist luggage up. Other major con was the distance to public transport. If you are short on time those walks to public transit will be very inconvenient (again speaking relative to Amsterdam which is very well connected) . Overall I don’t think I will stay here again which I feel bad about saying considering the staff here is nice.

Good location. Breakfast was good. Great view of the canal. Very clean.

Negative. Our timber floor was unbelievably noisy. It was a blessing to get on the bed and off the floor. Street noise can be clearly heard. Toilet paper was not replenished.

Friendly greeting upon arrival. Narrow stairs to room, pack light, no lift. Room was small but perfect for a solo traveler. I enjoyed the location, it was always a 20 minute walk from what I wanted to see. Not in the overwhelming touristy area.

Location was perfect, we walked everywhere. We asked for a room on a low floor, and were on the first floor above ground floor. If you slept with the window open, you could hear people talking outside as they walked by, but that's to be expected. With windows closed, you didn't really hear it. Fabulous view over the Prinsengracht, which is what we wanted for King's Day. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was clean, the water was very hot and great pressure! Yes, the stairs are narrow and steep, as they are in Amsterdam. Breakfast was continental, with an excellent people watching from the dining room. Would definitely stay here again.

Very small room, no mini fridge and no TV. The staircase is extremely steep, Breakfast was good as was the location. The staff were very mixed. Some were pleasant but the majority unfriendly. I think with a room rate of 71 euros I would not stay here again

I stayed for 2 nights in a twin canal view room on the second floor. The room was spacious, had the essentials & was clean. Whilst everything was in fine condition the room itself is quite dated - old carpet, dated wooden furniture, all in one bed & pillow cover etc. The bathroom was clean but on the smaller side. Yes the stairs were steep but I took them one at a time & was ok getting my bag up. Wouldn’t be suitable for less mobile people. Getting it down was harder, I had to sit on my butt and slide down each step to get my bag down! But I did have a 24kg large suitcase. Staff were friendly, I didn’t eat breakfast but it looked reasonable (eggs, cereals, cold cuts, cheese & bread). The location was convenient & easy to walk to Dam square. There is a bit of street noise on the weekend but nothing terrible. Would I stay again? Yes although I’d probably try & see if I could find something more modern at that price point. However, accomodation seems to be quite expensive in Amsterdam! Overall it’s a basic but clean & friendly hotel.

I have read the reviews about the stairway in the hotel, and did not take it seriously. However, after hauling my luggage up the stairs I would not recommend this hotel unless you are traveling very lightly. The stairs are very very steep. Even going down the stairs was spooky.
I also thought the room was tiny with no room to move about. I guess there are bigger rooms at this hotel, but the tiny size of our room was ridiculous.
The room was old looking, ugly carpet. This hotel needs an overhaul.There was mold in the base of the shower.
I would not go back.

Swings and roundabouts (and stairs!)

The Amsterdam Wiechmann has the best location of any Amsterdam hotel we've ever stayed in - right on the Prinsengracht and with the Nine Streets all around us...We could comfortably stroll to the Museumplein, Vondelpark, Dam Square, the Kalverstraat, etc. Having old and dodgy knees, we were a bit uncertain about how slow we would be on the stairs that many other reviews mentioned. We booked a deluxe twin, and got room 126 on the first floor with a cracking view of the Prinsengracht. Stairs were a curvy but no probs at all to get up and down with our bags. Our room was spotless, light, bright and roomy, with high ceilings, loads of room and big, old school Dutch furniture. The twin beds were comfy. The bathroom was also spotless, but could use a refurb. There was a cracked toilet cistern and base which, although it didn't affect its use, didn't reflect the quality of the rest of the hotel. The shower was fine. All the staff we encountered were charming, helpful and friendly, offering ideas about where to eat, and where to visit. Wifi was fine, and free hot drinks available in the lobby from lunchtime. Breakfast was excellent - a self service buffet with a choice of fruit, ham, cheese, cereal and boiled eggs, with a choice of breads and a speedy toaster. Hubby had never tried toast with hagelslag before and enjoyed that Dutch treat! The view from the breakfast room (underneath our room, I think) made us feel like locals. A great place to stay, and we will be back.

A charming old canal house with excellent service & friendly, helpful staff. Great atmosphere created by a lot of antiques. Met many interesting people in the sitting room. Good location with 15 min to 1/2 hour walk to most major attractions. The only caveat is that you will need to carry your luggage up narrow winding stairs yourself.

Our hotel room had a fantastic view if the canal. It is 3 blocks from the tram station, very close to the old, nice area of town. Breakfast was included. Since the building is from 1800s there is no elevators. not sure there is a/c- the breeze coming was great, no need.

Stayed here one night with a friend during the Easter bank holiday. The location was good and easy to walk to most locations and sightseeing. The hotel was clean and friendly and a good priced room. The room was a bit old fashioned but all clean and comfortable. Breakfast was included which had a small range of items for the price but was good quality. Would stay here again

Very nice hotel on the canal

This was our second stay and the Weichmann. It is a charming hotel with a great location. The only limitation is the steep stairways and lack of elevator, making carrying of bags up and down the stairs challenging. The breakfast room is wonderful and the breakfast buffet is very nice.

A cute, old hotel with tons of charm in a convenient location right along a canal. The included breakfast is great. The staff very helpful and friendly. Wifi very strong and steady. The taxi service they work with to get you to/from the airport is top notch too! Only issues: we were surprised to find there is no air conditioning. (But fortunately, we found a fan in the closet). Plus, I'd say our mattress seemed pretty old and saggy. Do beware if you're not in great shape -- There is no elevator and those steps are a killer. I'd definitely stay again.

Great family hotel, close to all services. Safe night and day. East walking to all attractions and very close to tram. Lovely breakfast. Friendly staff. Clean. Stairs to rooms may be an issue for people with mobility issues, but this is Amsterdam. Lots of shops for all you food needs within one block. Excellent value.

Warm welcome, staff extremely helpful. Steep stairs, but not uncommon in Amsterdam. Single room comfortable and perfectly adequately furnished. Tv reception poor - sound ok, but fuzzy picture. Couldn't rectify this, but at least I could hear the BBC news. View from window terrible.

Excellent location. Very short walk to many restaurants and pubs. Short walk to large supermarket. Close to attractions such as Anne Frank House.

Staff are excellent - friendly and helpful.

Breakfast is ok. Small selection of cereals, bread and fruit.

Room is small, but very clean. Bed clean, small, and not too comfortable.

Maybe a little far from the city centre but trams weren't far away although we mostly opted to walk everywhere we wanted to go. We were on the canal side-some nights noisy mostly due to the stupid barriers they had on the road where they were doing roadworks but they made it very difficult for motor bikes to get around so subsequently these barriers were noisily moved, but then the authorities would put them back in place the next day and so it went on. Only one of our three windows would stay up, and getting up and down the winding stairs with our bags was challenging. Staff were very friendly and helpful, even printing off information for us. It was very pleasant to have a homely lounge to sit in and have a cuppa, but also enjoy seeing some of the family treasures displayed. The breakfast room was in a good part of the hotel -interesting to have breakfast and people watch at the same time.

Location, location, location!

Central to most everything. The staff is friendly and helpful. However there is no elevator and be forewarned the stairs are steep, narrow and winding. Our room had dormer windows looking out on the canal. It was small but adequate clean. The queen bed comfortable. There happened to be work going on when we were there so when you walked out the door you were immediately in the line of bike traffic. Just need to be careful!

nice hotel great location

We traveled with 3 other couples we each had a very quant room furnished with great antiques. Staff was good breakfast was nice. It was fun to experience the culture and living experience. There were no lifts but we knew that up front, we were on the 3rd floor and carrying our bags up wasn't that bad just take your time. If I go back I would stay here again instead of a modern hotel.

A traditional hotel with interesting old objects adorning the lounges. No lift. Breakfast included. The phone in the room didn't work, which I had discussed with someone at reception but when I tried to discuss it later with a different member of staff she didn't believe me and was rude. All the other staff were very friendly.

Stayed 5 nights; able to walk to sights easily or access the tram for further distance trips. The hotel delivered as promised with helpful staff, and a good breakfast daily. The single room was clean and basic with a comfortable bed, lots of hot water for the shower. Would gladly stay here again.

If they offer the fourth floor room with a canal view, don't take it unless you like using a stairmaster or climbing ladders.
I am more than familiar with Amsterdam stairs but this was a bit extreme me.
Other than that, the hotel is in a great location and the staff was very accommodating.

Very good location of the hotel from wehre you can reach all major attractions by foot. Good breakfast and wifi. Room is small with basic amenities but offers all you need. Stairs to room are very steep, not recommended for people with walking issues. Hotel is 5 minutes walking to airport bus stop.

Outstanding Amsterdam location

Great location in Amsterdam. Very good breakfast but disappointed that an elevator is still not present to get bags up steep stairs. Perhaps a necessary shortcoming in order to retain the charm of an old canal house. Next trip we will make sure that we don't have any significant luggage along.

We read the reviews and decided on this hotel as it was not far from attractions. On arrival the hotel itself seemed a bit dated and the staircases are quite steep. The bed was really comfortable and although the rooms do not have air conditioning the hotel supply fans which helps to keep the room cool. The shower was a surprise as it was very powerful and welcome after an exhausting day doing the various attractions. Housekeeping was also good along with the continental breakfast. The location of the hotel was also very good as it was really just a 10 to 15 minute walk to places like Dam Square, Anne Frank House, Hard Rock Cafe and various museums. Slightly longer to Amsterdam Centraal Station. There is also a very convenient Tram stop 5 mins from the hotel. All in all a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. If we visit Amsterdam again will probably stay here again

Comfortable with limitations

Anyone with mobility issues would have difficulty on the stairs as there are no elevators. Rooms located on the street are not quiet until midnight or later. Best to limit luggage as they need to be carried up narrow steep stairs

If it had an elevator and maybe a newer bed it would be a 5. People were great.
A balcony room is fantastic. We are use to staying 4 and 5 star hotels. We were unsure in the beginning as it was only 2 stars. We were not disappointed.

comfortable beds, clean rooms, everything was in working order, and quite. Great breakfast! Hotel staff were helpful. Only thing was there was almost consistently a dog barking day/night. I love dogs don't get me wrong but it was a bit disturbing.

I was only a short walk to all major attractions which was really nice!

Hotel great location for shopping and sight seeing

The hotel is in a great location for sightseeing, shopping and enjoying local bars and restaurants. The hotel is traditional but very comfortable, great amenities and the staff are very helpful. The rooms are very comfortable, clean and perfect for short stays.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room was comfortable (although, instead of a double bed we had 2 single beds put together - this was no problem for us but may be for others?). Location was perfect, there was a bike hire place a stone throw away (we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the city on bicycles) with cafes and shops all within walking distance. Despite everything being nearby, the hotel was still in a quiet, peaceful location. We would highly recommend staying here however please note there are no lifts and the stairs are narrow and steep - this was no issue for us but may not be suitable for other guests (not sure if any rooms on ground floor but worth asking). Overall, very happy

Great hotel in Amsterdam

The hotel, staff and position were excellent. The hotel is very central to all the attractions, the staff are extremely helpful and obliging. It is a real character hotel with narrow stairs and no lifts, like most hotels in the area, but if you need assistance with luggage to your room the staff will do it for you. The breakfast is ok but nothing to rave about as it lacks a bit of variety. The rooms, our room had a balcony overlooking the canal, which was very comfotable and roomy. I would reccommend this hotel if staying in Amsterdam.

Nice hotel 10 min away from the touristy centre

Very centric hotel, views of the canals and lovely area. The rooms are very basic and I am really not a fan of toiletries in small plastic packages (how much cheaper than a small bottle can that be). Breakfast is simple but included in all tariffs so no complains there. A few min away you will find a bicycle rental agent to stroll around the city and if you stay at the hotel because of bad weather the wifi is powerful and fast. Notice that the hotel has no lift and very, very step stair. If you are going with large luggage and cannot walk up and down easily you should look for something else. At night there is noise from the street (we were there during the weekend) so if you want a very calm area you need to move a little further away from the centre.

Cute place in the heart of Amsterdam

We stayed at the Wiechmann Hotel mid-June 2015 for 3 nights. Positives: generally friendly and helpful staff, fantastic (and free) continental breakfast, friendly dog in the lobby (our kids LOVED petting her). Negatives: typically Dutch steep stairs - a bit of a challenge to negotiate w/ luggage, although in all fairness, they did offer to help us. Our quad room was no-frills, and didn't have much room to maneuver around the 4 beds, but it was clean and in good repair, the beds were comfortable, and the bathroom was nice. Tram line just a few blocks away, plentiful restaurants within walking distance.

Good Hotel, Great Location

Very good hotel in an ideal location for exploring Amsterdam. only 15 mins walk from Anne Franks house in 1 direction and 25 mins to the Van Gogh Museum in the other. Beautiful canals, good facilities, close to good restaurants, everything you could ask for.

Funky but not Fresh

Great potential, but seriously disappointing. Great location, and an interesting older building. But, really worn, tired, unattractive, not very clean, and not comfortable. We had one of the top floor rooms. It was a great space, nice outlook, really had potential for being a cool space with great local character. Instead, the decor and facilities were unattractive, old but not interesting old, worn, and nothing worked well. The heaters didn't do much, the shower was awful, etc. Breakfast was ok. Nothing special, hostel level food, but adequate. The staff were friendly and quite ok. The location is great, good area, lots of dining options, and a reasonable walk to anywhere you want to go.
If they would invest in an upgrade, step up their quality of facilities and furnishings, and work harder to keep it clean and in good condition, this could really be a great place.

Caution: No Lifts!
Location is only positive about this Hotel. Pretty average hotel with small yet cozy rooms, traditional + antique interior and average breakfast. Dam Square, Ann Frank House, Red Light District, City Center all within convenient walking distance.
