Breakfast has so much potential but was really poor. One plate sent back after staff failed to enquire about allergies. Another plate was served cold (literally cold).

The main building itself looks great and the lounge and restaurant have clearly been updated of late and are very classy. The food in the restaurant was of a fairly high standard and the staff very friendly. The part that lets the hotel down is the standard of the rooms in the adjacent building. The view was really nice, but the rooms are very tired indeed, with the shower in the bath (albeit powerful) something of a relic and I had to bend down to use it. The bed was comfortable, however, the scatter cushions smelt pretty awful and musty which wasn't great.
Overall, a pleasant enough single night stay, but I wouldn't have wanted to stay much longer, simply down to the condition of the room rather then the service and food/drink areas.

Let's start with the positive first. It's a beautiful hotel visually, a little ways off the road on a private track with a wonderful view of the vally below. The staff were very helpful and provided good service when asked. The reception, lobby areas and bar were all warm, and comfortable. The grounds were well kept, looked beautiful and were safe. Unfortunately, on the negative side, firstly:
The entire arm for the toilet roll fell off the wall the first time we entered the bathroom. The bathroom had 1 large bath towel and 1 small hand towel in the bathroom for a double room! We searched the room and found 1 more bath towel stuffed in the closet. The original towel looked like a rottweiler had been attacking it at one end. There were 3 tiny bottles, shampoo, soap and moisturiser. That's it, no toothbrush, no toothpaste,no glass, no cotton buds, no tissues nothing. The bathroom had no floor or shower mat which made getting into,taking, and getting out of the bath a dangerous endeavour. And before you ask, I live in Tokyo, Japan but am British. I haven't stayed in a hotel in the UK for many years but even the cheapest hotels in Japan supply basics. Our room was not touched for 3 days by the cleaners. This may have been our fault and we should have asked, or put some sign on the door 'Clean please'. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean but to be honest, looked a little tired, for example: the carpet with big creases across it, the laminate peeling off the cabinetry.

A really lovely, quiet stay

Beautiful hotel grounds, staff are extremely friendly, rooms are very clean but a little dated - the bathtub and shower had very obvious signs of wear with cracked tiles, very old and outdated shower taps, stains and scratches on the bottom of the tub. The provided toiletries gels were a lovely quality (The White Company) and the view from the room was so gorgeous. The stay was quiet and we barely heard other guests or noise from outside. We would have liked a bigger bed for the room rate, although what was provided was comfortable. The TV and the provided fan need updating for it to be true luxury. The restaurant staff were so lovely, and the food was excellent! Drinks were of excellent choice too and my dirty martini was delicious. Definitely recommend eating and drinking on-site. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Comfy bed but lethal bathroom

First the good points:
- good nights sleep in comfy bed
- were given a free upgrade to a larger room on the lower floor of the accomodation block - still up a big flight of stairs and separate from the main building (we were initially put up a further 2 floors and my other half really struggled with the stairs).

Now the less good and problems:
- the shower over the jacuzzi bath was lethal. The bath moved substantially under my feet, there was no handrail to hold onto whilst climbing in and out over very slippery surfaces and when I tried to shower in the morning it was far too hot as no cold water came through. My other half never dared risk it.
- the hot water from the taps was scalding at times (others have said this and obviously no recommended temperature limiting system was fitted).
- there is no lift necessitatimg climbing 3 flights of steps to the top floor
- you have to walk outside to get to the main building

We wouldn't recommend this hotel and won't be staying again.

Room service was poor - the order was wrong. There is no way of contacting reception apart from walking down to them. They need to get proper comms between guests and staff, it's not okay to have to walk down a couple of flights of stairs and across a courtyard, then wait, to let them know they got your very basic food order wrong.
Second problem, the rooms at the top are baking hot in the summer (no idea about other seasons). There is no aircon.
Third problem, the rooms on the top floor have very limited ceilings. Only a tiny child could walk around the low eaves of the top floor rooms. I was travelling solo and in a double room, but anybody in the far side of the bed would have needed to double over to get out of the bed to the bathroom.
Lovely building, not a good place to stay.

I arrived with a suitcase and a wheeled laptop bag and was assigned a room in a separate building up a stone set of steps, then two winding flights of narrow stairs with a wonky bannister. No lift. The reluctant receptionist literally said \"I might be able to help you with a bag if you like\", as I had no cash for a tip on me I declined. Being in my sixties, I had to lie down in the tiny beam obstructed room with no plug sockets near the bed for charging after that. It's a stunning location and the restaurant was great but this was all too much.

Great last minute stop.

Last minute booking, first impressions as you go down the drive are what a beautiful building. Lovely welcome.
Our room was clean up on the top floor and bed was really comfy!
We had drinks and snacks in the bar, we didn’t eat a main evening meal or breakfast as we’d eaten before arriving.
Only thing to note was carpets in hallways were very stained and tired but other than that a lovely stay.

Only slight issue was our room had a double bed in whereas most nowadays have at least two singles pushed together which are a bit bigger but for what it was , I would recommend this hotel.

The hotel is tired and in need of refurbishment. The carpets in the hallways are worn and dirty. The fridge in the room was not working and the solution which came from the duty manager was to give me a bag of ice. Our room was small and had a large area of restricted headroom which caused several bumped heads. Several of the electrical sockets could not be accessed due to them being located behind a heavy desk. The en-suite had a lovely large bath but the plug did not seal. The room was not cheap and we were very disappointed.

Good for the money, but it needs am update

The bathroom was equipped with a bath, but very outdated in that the tiles around bath and floor had dark mould in places, which really isn't good.
The classic room had a lovely view, was cosy and neat. However, the kettle is tucked in a drawer, and upon putting it on the desk and trying to plug it in found that the cord was so short as to make the kettle teeter on the edge of the table - which is very dangerous for boiling water. One of the bedside lamps didn't work. The duvet was very thin. I tried to book direct with the hotel, but was sent to voicemail, so I booked with hotels.com - only to be told quite abruptly that breakfast wasn't included, but if I'd booked direct with the hotel I would have received a complimentary breakfast. This was quite a rude thing to be told on one's arrival I felt. In any case the restaurant service was lovely, and the food was of good quality. The views are lovely.

Great all rounder

Very good overall. Just a few small gripes that would make it perfect - plug sockets by the bed in annexe were odd, fitted the lamps which had round pins on the plugs but not a normal UK phone charger. Water too hot in sink tap and not a mixer, so either washed hands in cold water or burnt them. One tap moving around a lot and needs tightening up. Evening meal a little expensive, but excellent service and good choice. Plentiful breakfast. Much better than another similar hotel in the area. Comfortable room and clean bathroom. Will definitely stay again.

Nice location with a decent view. Some of the rooms are outdated and could use a lift up. Apparently \"because of covid\"rooms are only cleaned upon request which we weren't told when checking in, so when asked on the second day we were told is a policy and is just the way it is. It is interesting to see business taking advantage of rules that were in place due to a an exceptional situation and not reverting back to the way things work better for customers

The hotel is OK. It is dated but clean.
Food was good, waiting times were a little long but nothing too bad.
My issue was with the room (47), headroom was very limited as beams were low in the room. The shower was awful, it is too low and I kept banging my head on it during showering. It was central to the bath and at a fixed height.
When i made a comment to the receptionist she simply said you should have considered an executive suite at £20 per night extra. ! So if you want to be able to stand up straight in your room and shower, you have to pay an extra £20 per night.
Needless to say I won't be staying again.

This hotel is in a superb setting but money needs to be spent on the bedrooms. We were in No 7. It urgently needs a proper shower. The ceiling needs recovering. A new carpet would be good. Paintwork needs attention.

I was able to have the shower head touch the top of my head - but at 5'5\" it wasn't as big an issue for me as it may have been for someone taller who would have been hitting their head against it or having to lower themselves to wash their hair.

Shocking! Worst place I’ve ever stayed!

Appalling place to stay! The room was very outdated with stained ceiling from a leak, filthy walls and carpet and an ancient bathroom that was freezing. No heating in the bathroom and a giant corner bath with a pathetic little shower head that anyone over 5”11 could not fit under! There was no shower curtain either and the bath had no grip for standing in it or stepping out onto tiles slippery steps. The toilet was slow and instead of the more hygienic hand wash we got a little round soap! Very angry about the bed. King size bed BUT a double duvet stuffed in a King quilt cover!! So there was massive space around the edges left! It was a very thin duvet too, no tip sheet. We were freezing! For the price we paid we should of had a duvet that’s big enough! Talk about cheap and nasty. Honestly, the bathroom was horrific. We didn’t shower as we’d both bang our heads on the tiny spout! No way was I risking slipping whilst standing in a corner bath with no grip, rail, mat, nothing. We asked for a quiet room due to my autism and got put in a room right next to the door that opens into the corridor for every other guest! We heard the door and voices. The awful brown water stain on the ceiling, the dirty and damaged walls should be painted. I was so angry when we saw the bathroom and froze all night trying to share a double duvet shoved in a King cover! It was so thin it was freezing. This hotel is a quinticetial shabby chic hotel that is total shabby with no chic. The rooms were old and dirty the communial areas dirty and very tired. We complained about a shower thst was dripping water but nothing was done about it, it had obviously been dripping for a long time has it had stained the bath. Not that this made much difference to the bath has this was badly pitted and marked. I cannot understand how this hotel is rated has four stars ot would be lucky to get one syar

Nice and friendly but somewhat shabby

Friendly welcome though condition and cleanliness of hotel poor, particularly room. Bed comfortable enough and bathroom functional. Carpets stained and dusty (particularly around skirtings and alongside furniture/bed. Walls stained as were soft furnishings. Breakfast was lovely.

Little Gem of a place.

Great Hotel, staff very young and need training, not unusual as everywhere seem to suffer with this since covid. Lovely hotel and to be fair friendly staff.
