The room was very clean and spacious. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was warm and inviting yet elegant. It was walking distance to all of the downtown activities that we enjoy and also to the Cliffwalk. We enjoyed everything about our stay! We will definitely visit again!

The hotel was within walking distance to Thames Street, which was a perk. The hotel was very clean. Unfortunately, though this stay was disappointing. Especially given the money that was spent for a nights stay. The room was so loud from AC/heating units that you could hear it from down the hall. I thought we stayed in the hotels utility closet. The bar cocktails were a miss and didn’t even finish them. I am not sure I would stay again even if a nights stay was half the price it was.

We stayed at Hotel Viking years ago when we got married and remembered the hotel very differently. The room was clean but cramped. The bathroom was so much worse. My husband is tall, and could barely maneuver around in the bathroom. We opted for breakfast in the restaurant one day, and it took a very long time to be served despite there only being 2 other tables at the time. Someone else must’ve complained because a manager came over. Things moved quicker, but our food was cold and unenjoyable. The place is older and decorated very nicely, but it was not comfortable.

Hotel was sprawling property so it was a long walk (elevators and multiple sets of stairs) to get to our room from front desk. The pool was awesome. The hot tub was small and no bubble/jet action. The staff was lovely and helpful. Location is walkable but it’s a hilly walk. Electric car charges were out of service 👎

Couldn’t see the ocean, hotel on the outside looks beautiful and grand inside is more run down than you would expect a hotel like that to be. The room was ok nothing to write home about. Could use some serious updating, paint etc. kind of expected the gilded age vibe inside and didn’t really get that. Would also like to note there is not much sound deadening between rooms could hear a lot of chatter from hallway and a joining room. Room above is sounded like they had lead shoes on. Overall it was not bad although we did not spend much time in the room. Would we come back? Yes but because it is really convenient to everything down town walking distance. The valets were all super nice. Staff was friendly.

The room was spacious and charming. But the bathroom left a lot to be desired. The toilet and shower were on one side of the hallway, and the sink was on the other side. There was clear water damage on the wall behind the toilet that had been addressed, but was a mess. And the side with the toilet and shower was tiny, you could barely fit to sit on the toilet.

Needs renovation badly. Beautiful exterior but as you walk in, it looks to be a cheap renovation trying to make it modern but not succeeding. Our room was lovely. Our bathroom on the other hand was less than lovely. The tub was all torn up the tile horrible. It looks like they attempted to tile it at some point. There were cracks in the floor and mismatch tiles. I would not expect this for $500 a night.

Beautiful historic hotel in a quiet but convenient location in Newport. Most of the hotel and rooms have been updated and are very nice but the bathrooms still need work. Very old style bathtub/shower and tile that could easily be replaced to keep up with everything else. Other than that, it's a very nice stay.

The food in the resturant was superb.
The town trolley stops on the hotel corner.
There is a cute coffee, pastry, sanwich cafe across the street.
The rooms are fairly small and the furniture a little worn.
All in all, a great 3 days.

The staff was excellent. Especially the wait staff for the rooftop bar. However, for $800 / night, I expect more. First, we were put in basement level rooms with no view whatsoever. The AC was either full on or off which made it either freezing or hot with no in between. Our friends in another room had no AC the 4 nights we stayed. The sliding bathroom door in our room was very heavy and tight, it was incredibly hard to open or close. My wife couldn't shut the door if I wasn't there as she couldn't open the door once closed. We did not plan to use the spa but went to see what it was like. There was a film over the top of the water and it was very murky, I wouldn't dare to put my hand in it. I have stayed in better places in Newport for much less. I would visit the rooftop bar, but will never stay there again.

This property is due for a remodel. Apparently this is coming up soon. Although the room was clean it was very old. Not very well thought out.... No garbage in the bathroom and a fan that turns on with the light switch in the separate bathtub shower / toilet room. It was extremely loud and annoying especially going to the bathroom in the middle of the night when someone else is sleeping. The closet space for clothing to hang was extremely small and not very usable. Also when we came into the room one of the ceiling tiles was removed and you could see the pipes in the walls. The coffee maker leaked water all over the dresser counter.... Had to remove the glass top off the vanity to clean it all up.
So overall we were not very impressed. We also had to call down several times to get some extra coffee sent up. When we were in the bar area ordering food a huge beetle type bug crawled across the countertop..... Not sure exactly what it was....??
Great location and very walkable area. It is about 10 minutes down to the Newport Marina. I am not sure we would stay here again.. maybe after the remodel we would give it another chance but NOT LIKELY LOL.

Not as impressive as the photos

From the view of this property online, I was expecting much more. It is a beautiful old hotel that was renovated not that long ago - but is clearly in need of more work.

The interior still feels worn, the rooms in particular. Most disappointingly was the mattress - it was an old spring mattress and our springs were damaged near the top so your head curved downward even when using your pillows (which were also terrible).

Overall, for the prices charged here, I wouldn’t go back.

The hotel is beautiful, and the location is great, but the AC in our room wasn't working properly, so we couldn't rest. It was a nightmare.
Our room had a sofa bed, but no linen in the closet, as usual. We had to wait for someone to come with the pillows and blanket. We had just 2 towels, but we were 3 people in our reservation, so I called again a the next day to get a towel for our son. Just details, easy to fix, but very annoying... My conclusion is that our Suite wasn't ready, but we did check at 4pm, it wasn't an early check in. Maybe they just need more staff to supervise better,

Coming to Newport for over 15 years and have always stayed at the Viking Hotel. Over the past two years from Covid I believe staffing has become more difficult and more stressful since the quality of employees has dropped significantly.
This has been for years an amazing experience but I’m unfortunately will be looking for other locations in my future for Newport.

Our stay at The Viking Hotel was very disappointing. We were placed in a “dog-friendly” room that had visible pee stains on the floor. The room itself was outdated, old, and poorly maintained. Despite the hotel knowing we had a baby with a stroller, they put us down a full flight of stairs with no elevator access, which made things extremely inconvenient.

The pool, while nicely designed, was freezing and basically unswimmable. On top of that, valet parking was an unnecessary $45 per day—even though the hotel owns the lot—making it feel like an unjustified extra charge.

Overall, the rooms are far too old and in desperate need of renovation. The property does not match the standards or value you’d expect for the price. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend staying here

When we checked in our room was still dirty. There were cheerios on the floor. Our fridge was leaking water. The heat was on so our room was at 80 degrees. The internet was out for two nights. For as expensive as the rooms are, you get no included breakfast, the cafe charges over $10 for a bacon egg and cheese sandwich that’s McDonald’s quality. The downstairs bar tender was very rude and dry. He seemed absolutely miserable to be there. The room service staff never came to clean our room the entire stay, or if they did it was not noticeable. There were multiple events happening which would be fine if the events didn’t cut off access to the 24/7 gym and the pool. For half of our stay these amenities were inaccessible, which again for the price tag is huge let down. The redeeming qualities are the wonderful front desk and valet staff. They were all very kind. TL;DR, could get much better quality at a lower price. Would not recommend.

Older hotel just need a little love

Hotel was nice but older. Was in an older room. Had to call down about ac. The ac unit is held up by a stick I would find something else instead of the stick. Went he unit cut on/off it was very loud. The bathroom mirror should be moved over you couldn’t stand in front of the mirror unless door was closed, but then you would get hot in the bathroom.

The restaurant was nice but the outside fireplaces or options for space heaters weren’t working. They should always be working.

The restaurant accommodates my daughters severe food allergies as did room service.

The directions inside the hotel to roof bar or other things were a bit confusing.

45 a night valet with in and out privileges was nice.

My reception at the front desk was lukewarm at best. Our room was small, right next to the elevator and overlooked the satellite dish but we were too tired to ask for a change, so I will own that. The bed was comfy, but the cooling unit made it impossible for us to sleep comfortably. It blasted arctic air until the desired temperature was reached, then shut off completely until we were too hot. Finally we just shut it off and slept without sheets.
On the plus side, after the initial front desk encounter, the staff was warm and helpful, especially Mark at the bar.

Asie from this hotel's age, there is nothing charming about it. It is overpriced and at the price they charge lack the amenities and services one would expect.

While, the parking is convenient and is on the \"main drag\"the attention to detail is shocking. Their menu offering is limited and, if it were not in Newport, it would be out of business.

The carpeting is old and not fitting with the rest of the hotel. Their staffing levels are inadequate and the menu offerings are poor. In fact, even the menus show a lack of detail.

Save your money, go to a Red Roof Inn and take an Uber when needed, you will have a better experience.

It's a nice old hotel with character. Nobody cleaned our room both days. Check-in and check-out were badly handled, took forever, and no bill was sent: had to follow up. Management did try to address check-in problems and was responsive. But way too expensive for the experience we had.

We were put in a room that was on the 3rd floor but even with that our floor shook with vibrations and there was a loud mortor sound all day and night. We asked the front desk to check it out and they said they did and fixed it but nothing was done. For the money this should have been made right. The hotel basically took off the $45.00 parking fee. Lastly the roof top bar is run down ripped cushions nothing special.

The hotel and area were beautiful; however, I did not think the price, around $600 a night, was at all worth the stay. There were no additional perks, such as a welcome or nightly reception. With $45 a night for parking as well, it was a bit of a disappointment. We love the area, but will be looking for accommodations that seem more reasonable next time.

Very nice updated hotel. I’d call it classic colonial style. Great location. 10 min walk to Thames street and the piers with all restaurants on the water. Very happy with the location and super clean bedrooms and sheets/pillows. The only one con I can say is the 45.00/day parking. It’s pretty steep considering there are many spots and you’re paying for the room. That is the only negative.

Nice hotel but if you book through a 3rd party, they will CHARGE YOU $50 A NIGHT EXTRA when you check out. Kind of ridiculous. Was not aware of it when checking in. Also if you drive, there's no free parking, valet only as nd you have to pay an extra $45 a night for it.

Wonderful hotel in Newport !

I went to this hotel for a weekend in Newport with a friend and we had a wonderful experience. We loved having breakfast in the market. One day we took the hotel bicycles and rode to see the mansions. We were able to walk to the International tennis Hall of Fame and to the Wharf area for dinner. We could also walk to the Newport Art Museum, and the downtown area for some nice shopping. The hotel is convenient to everything. Our room was very large and comfortable. The staff was very friendly. I definitely recommend this hotel!

We were sadly disappointed in our stay. The front desk felt rushed and unwelcoming. We haf a king room that has obvious eater damage in bathroom and adjacent wall. The water issue became clear when the ceiling started pouring water from the light fixture.
We took a video and notified the front desk, and was met with we can send maintenance, and I quote \"Maybe they can fix it.\" Or you can change rooms to a double queen. No apology or upgrade offered simply this is the only room we have to offer its up to you. Now I don't know anyone who would willingly stay in a room that has water pouring from the ceiling. I understand that it was a holiday weekend so therefore options would be limited, but with a high rating and a $650.00 price point one would expect more. We changed rooms with little fanfare or acknowledgement from front desk. I would certainly not stay at the Viking again ot recommend it to others.
Last year we stayed at a different hotel in Newport for $500.00 a night and had much more favorable experience.
