This older and beautiful hotel sits in the heart of Old Town so is central to many fine restaurants and great shopping. The manager, Martha, is amazing. She is knowledgeable of the area and professional at all times with a warmness that we very much appreciated. The pool area along the river were wonderful! All in all a lovely few days spent there!

Garlands del Rio is a charming boutique hotel. It is their people that stand out and keep people coming back. Martha, Rico and Ivan are all exceptional.
The hotel itself is very nice, clean and convenient to everything in the Zona Romantica. We were there during the cartel violence and the hotel staff kept us safe and secure. They did their best under extremely difficult situations.
We definitely will return and visit them again.

This place is pure magic ✨ with a genuinely warm, customer-service-oriented staff who make you feel at home from the moment you arrive.

Misael took wonderful care of us at the garden patio, Marta was incredibly helpful arranging our whale watching and sunset cruise, and Alex’s charismatic personality added such a special touch to our stay.

If you’re a cat lover, you’re in for a treat! Simply leave your balcony or bathroom door slightly open (it’s completely safe), and Amelia and Antonio — the sweetest, most affectionate cats — might sneak in to say hello, purr, and ask for a little love. It’s such a charming part of the experience.

Garlands del Río is perfectly located in the heart of the city, within walking distance to everything. You may have seen things in the media about Mexico or Puerto Vallarta, but we felt safe, welcomed, and cared for throughout our stay — and we are already planning to come back!

Mexico and its people are truly amazing. Don’t let the news fool you.

We are so grateful for the hospitality and for being welcomed so warmly into this beautiful country. We love Boutique Hotel Garlands del Río — the staff, the cats, the river, the ambiance, the scent in the air… every single detail.

This was our first time staying here. Our room was clean and had a beautiful view across the river. I loved listening to the music from the restaurant across the river as well. The staff were very kind and did their best to make our stay as pleasant as possible including the breakfasts that we had on the outdoor terrace every morning.

Our rating is 4.5 stars. Beautiful boutique hotel. Authentic Mexican decor and charm. Very clean and pretty quiet. Wonderful staff. Great location. The only reason we didn’t rate a 5 star is the WiFi and cell signal were spotty but still decent. Everything else was wonderful and we would recommend staying. The sister hotel is just as beautiful and the roof top pool is a must with breathtaking views!

you really need to consider the reality of a small, aged, boutique hotel. Charming doesn't count when there is no water in the upper rooms, it takes 3 tries over 2 days to get a working AC and there are multiple winding stairs to many rooms that would make this a nightmare for anyone with mobility issues. Only discount we could get for the inconvenience (thank you to the sympathetic front desk staff) was to cut our 'additional charges' in half. As soon as we booked with Expedia we got an email from the hotel directly offering a better room that had just come free, with breakfast for a daily fee paid directly to the hotel. We would not stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel in Puerto Vallarta with my wife and my parents-in-law for a family vacation. While we truly appreciated the kindness and friendliness of the staff, we were unfortunately disappointed with several aspects of the hotel’s maintenance and basic services, especially considering its 4-star rating.
First, the bathroom was located right next to the bed, and there was a persistent unpleasant odor, possibly from a plumbing or water backflow issue. The smell was strong enough to disturb our sleep throughout our stay. This is not something we expected from a hotel of this category.
Second, we were informed that room cleaning service would be provided daily unless we hang the “do not disturb” tessel on the doorknob. On our second day, my parents did not hang the tessel, expecting the room to be cleaned while we were out for sightseeing. However, when we returned, the room had not been serviced at all—no cleaning, no fresh towels, and no bed made. This was surprising and disappointing, as daily housekeeping is a very basic expectation.
Third, there was no electric kettle, coffee, or tea provided in the room. Guests are instead asked to use a shared guest kitchen, where a communal electric kettle is available. Unfortunately, the kettle did not appear to be cleaned regularly, and there was leftover water inside. No coffee or tea bags were provided either. These are small but important amenities that many guests expect at a 4-star hotel.

The staff were great . Our Suite came with breakfast every day and within minutes of sitting down outside they were bringing us fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee, then fresh to order breakfast. The location was great for walking and trying out new restaurants each night. The market was right across the bridge and made for a great early morning walk/run up the stairs and around. (Hope you like stairs as there are lots of levels to the hotel) Only downside was the bars and street noise if you were trying to have a daytime nap (bars usually shut down music at 11pm as they are located in the residential area) there is no soundproofing
Our suite the Marrakesh was beautiful with a large very comfortable king bed and fantastic a/c that kept you cool after a long day.
We stayed for two weeks the only reason we didn’t give it a better rating was that the hotel needed some care. We pointed out the burnt out lights and squeaky door in our Suite (taken care of right away)
Around the quiet pool one of the day beds was broken (told front staff) and you could tell that the self service bar wasn’t really used as the drinking classes were covered in dust.
Garlands has two other hotels that you can check out for a fee (both have roof top patios and pools) one is located up the street lovey valley view and quiet location. The other is under construction (lots of noise and dust) but a nice view on the ocean if you don’t mind paying $10 US for an ice cream or $16 us for aperol spritz

Garlands Del Rio is a boutique hotel. Every room is different and unlike anything I’ve stayed in before. The hotel is old, in a historic/beautiful kind of way. The pool is modest, nothing fancy but it’s all you need to cool off after a long day. The pool bar is “honor code” style, take what you need and write it down.The staff are very nice people. Shout out to Rigo, Martha, and Iván. Martha recommended a local beach spot that ended up being our favorite part of our trip. Enjoy the hotel cats as they lounge around. Sit on your balcony and enjoy the live music pour in from the bistro across the river. Sleep with your windows open and let the city soothe you into a slumber. As a young female traveler, I highly recommend this hotel. Disclaimer: the room does not have a bathroom door! If this is a concern to you, please ask before you book. Thank you Garlands Del Rio.

My husband and I spent 10 days here in December.

I'll start with the positives.

The concierge staff were ALL amazing (Marta, Ivan, and Xavier). They went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. They were the best.

The bed and bedding was extremely comfortable. Much appreciated!

Small things, but the Kleenex and TP was high quality. While that sounds trivial, my husband and I both got sick (bad cold or Covid) but soft Kleenex was a life saver!

The location and view over the river was wonderful. Right in the heart of Zona Romantica, but very quiet and serene.

Now, the not-so-positives...

Our first room (Hansel) was so dark! A lighter paint and better light fixtures could have easily fixed this. Personal grooming in the bathroom was next to impossible. After 4 days or so, I couldn't take it anymore, and when I saw the room across from us (Gretel) had become available, I asked if they could switch us (they kindly did). It was a little smaller, but much brighter, with wonderful natural light in the bathroom.

Having paid $40 US per day for an \"upgrade\", it left me wondering what kind of room we'd have had without the upgrade.

The upgrade also included breakfast, which was okay at best. Limited choice and sporadic service (though I know that they were going through some changes).

The pool area was pleasant (though tired and in need of repair) had only two loungers.

Overall? Okay. Know what room you'll have...some were even darker than Hansel!

Went here late October 2025, with my 16 year old son and nephew. WOW! We loved the hotel, the pool, the common areas and our enormous room. The hotel is so unique, and you'll feel quite at home right away. Gorgeous little art pieces and fantastic wood antiques and huge wooden doors.

Location on the river was beautiful, and so relaxing.
Music floats on the night air.

Breakfast on the river side deck is WONDERFUL! Take advantage! Just be sure to sit protected under a sun umbrella, as the naughty iguanas are snacking on the berries above and might drop some leaves or bark
Food was simple, but well made. Service was great.

Here's a hint - to get to the Malecon take the back gate and pop over to the other side of the river. Mosey on down through the vendors stalls. This was such a neat way to get to the beach.
Such a quick little walk.

The Hotel staff went BEYOND our expectations. Front desk gals were amazing. They helped out with restaurant recommendations, tour info, directions. Try ANY restaurant that they recommend. Foodies will love them.
The service staff fellows were so helpful and cheery.

Bed was super comfortable. A/C was collllllddd. Ceiling fan, gorgeous furniture, colourful walls, nice bedding, little fridge, safe,

The road out front is under construction (as of October 25, 2025)- so if you're ordering an Uber, make sure to grab the name of the hotel on the closest intersection for pick up.

I will be back. This hotel is an absolute gem of a place.

The pictures on Expedia was nice, In real life it’s not the same it’s an old building no elevator the pool is old and chipping the jacuzzi is dirty and old school. The stairs were narrow and old.
There were a lot of flys and mascitos. The gentleman at the desk didn’t even ask if we needed help with our suitcase. We left after the first night.

Outside of that, it’s affordable with everything easily nearby. Super safe. Locals are so kind. This was my second time staying at Garlands del Río, and it was just as magical as I remembered. I first visited over five years ago and made it a point to find this charming riverside boutique hotel again — even searching through old photos on my phone to relocate it. It was absolutely worth it.

From the moment you step onto the property, there’s a calm and peaceful energy that sets the tone for your stay. The entire place has such a unique character — a blend of vintage charm and artistic touches that make it feel like a home away from home.

The staff are incredibly kind and welcoming, and the peaceful setting by the river creates the perfect atmosphere for rest and reflection. It’s rare to find a place that stays so true to its spirit over time, and Garlands del Río has done just that.

I’ll continue to return whenever I can — it’s a true Puerto Vallarta treasure.

Extremely rude employees. Very loud construction noise every morning during my stay. Each morning the wall of my room was being hit with hammers or drills and it would start around 8am or sometimes earlier. The hotel staff did not treat me in a hospitable way. The hotel is in a great location within walking distance to great restaurants and the beach. The pool area is a bit dated, but nice, and you're also given the option to use the rooftop pool of their sister hotel, just up the road. We'd stay here again!

Perfect location, wonderful staff, relaxing heated pool, and Old Vallarta charm. The staff were friendly and helpful. Access to the sister hotel pool was welcome for us, as my husband couldn't get into the pool at the Garlands (the steps were too deep for his limited mobility), but a short walk, and we enjoyed a lovely roof top pool. Jesus was an attentive and friendly bartender, and the desk staff was great. Yvan was helpful and attentive, as were other staff whose names escape me. The location is wonderful. Two short blocks to the beach, and great restaurants all around. Trattoria Nuevo is a beautiful little Italian restaurant with live music. We enjoyed our stay at Garlands very much, and hope to return before too long.
