Convenient to beach. If you appreciate old architecture, good food and drinks and a front porch this is for you. For people who need central air everywhere( not just room) , and cannot do stairs reconsider this.

The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. They don’t have TVs in the room and the WiFi was nonexistent. They kept saying that it was glitchy, but we couldn’t get it to work at all. They emailed me months ago saying that we would be staying in the southern quarters. I was happy because there’s less stairs, and it also has a kitchenette. When I checked in they put us in the main building two floors up with a loud wedding under us. It is close enough to walk to the beach and Washington Street shops, but don’t expect too many amenities.

The Chalfonte is 150 year-old hotel. There is no elevator so be aware we had a room on the third floor. Lots of stairs room was small but we loved the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They carried our luggage up the stairs .restaurant is wonderful for both breakfast and dinner. On Thursdays it’s a wonderful band on the porch. Porch is a great hangout any night.

Such a cute place. It was charming and really felt homey. I would definitely stay there again. I always had hot water for showers and the air conditioning was always cold...which are big deals to me.
I wish we had a television in the room, but understand that's not the vibe for a B&B.
All of the staff was very helpful and polite. We had an amazing breakfast the one day we ate on property.

Historical Hotel. Centrally located- beautiful neighborhoods.

Delapitated, dirty grossly stained rooms w/broken furniture. BROKEN- lopsided due to missing wheel on dresser & leaning broken lamp. (Not distressed or vintage.)

Front desk was polite.

The hotel host a concert on the porch that draws hundreds from all over. The streets are blocked off and the bands were magical! Clean crowd & fun!

HOWEVER! As out of state guests we were unaware of what the evening had in store.

My husband & I grabbed a table on the patio & I stated with an appetizer & wine while my husband ran a quick (30 min) work errand. When he returned we were going to have dinner & celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary & enjoy the music.

Well..
The band stated 30 mins late @ spent another 15-20imutes warming up… (45 mins)

25 mins before my husband returned, (he had not eaten yet) the server informed me I had 20 more minutes left before I had to leave due to 1.5 hour limit. (Was not told that at the beginning.)
The bill was brought, I paid, got up and now I lost ALL other possible seating due to crowds.

My husband returnedto the table that we were sitting at, he texted me & said “what happened?” I told him “we got booted…”
We sat in a dank room waiting for a table to open up …. We could hear the band through the windows but could not see

When we WERE seated (an hour) I looked around and saw other patrons had not been held to the 1.5 hour limit! We were paying hotel GUESTS & locals got privileges

The desk attendant told us that May and October are big times for weddings at the hotel and in Cape May. During our two-night stay in May, the hotel hosted weddings on both Friday and Saturday nights. The events drew a lot of people, and included loud music in the dining room until 10 PM (the bass beat reverberated in our room 2 floors up) and crowded gatherings on the historic porch that excluded us being able to enjoy it. Nevertheless, the hotel and staff are lovely, and Cape May in May is really nice. We understand why the hotel is popular for weddings but if we return we would avoid May or October.

When making reservations for the Chalfonte hotel during the off season, be aware you are not staying in the actual hotel. The reservations are for their winter accommodations next door. It is a small hotel with staff available by phone. There was no daily maid service during my stay.It was clean and comfortable and quiet. Parking is on the street only.

The bathroom and bedroom were very clean. We stayed in the southern cottage. Our room did not have air-conditioning, but it did have a ceiling fan. The kitchen downstairs was tiny. It had a tiny mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and electric tea kettle. There was also a tiny mini fridge in the bedroom. You cannot cook a full meal in the kitchen.

I was thoroughly happy with the Chalfonte Hotel (though I actually stayed in the \"Southern Quarters,\" which is next door as a sort of add-on to the original). The accommodations were built in 1876, so of course the rooms are smaller than people are used to now, the hotel doesn't have elevators, and travelers can hear things go bump in the night. The room still had old marble-topped desks! Check-in was easy. The \"breakfast room\" was pleasant. I was happily surprised to discover that parking (at least in March) was easily available in front of the building. The location in general was great--close to the Cape May downtown, within walking distance, really. Absolutely charming building, built in the Queen Anne style that is usual for Cape May. The building was old--that's part of the appeal--but the interiors didn't seem shabby, and everything was clean. Highly recommended.

If in season you'd stay in the big hotel part..the one they show. Otherwise older less upkept rooms. Kept clean but 1 white extension 2 prong only cord for the whole room..open the shower door if sitting on the john so your legs have room...i only needed to sleep..but the disappointment in the room was real.

You ask how the kitchen was for cooking? What kitchen? The only amenity offered was a set up for morning coffee or tea. What good is it when neither milk, nor half & half nor artificial creamer were present. There is so little security that the front door of the building does not lock. Just because this building is owned by Chalfont does not allow them to pretend that the experience is the same. \"You get what you pay for still rings true.\"

We had a nice stay at the Chalfonte. We didn't realize when we booked that the main hotel was closed for the season, but it was easy enough to find the Southern quarters and check in. It seemed like it was a bit not secure given the lack of staff and the method of retrieving our keys (envelopes out on the table with names on them and keys inside), but overall things worked out. The room was really hot during the middle of the night and there wasn't a way to change it without impacting all of the other rooms, but that's part of the charm of an old hotel! I enjoyed reading the Chalfonte history book from the nightstand!

Very charming room and very clean. Found street parking right outside. Room was right next to a kitchen area, and I noticed coffee perking there as we were leaving. TV was great. Temperatures were artic that night, and the heating was noisy enough to disturb one person's sleep. The location in Cape May is only a few blocks from the mall...easy walking. Considering the location and the nice room, this was an absolute steal...exceptionally good value. We agreed it would be where we try to stay next December if available.

What a cool hotel. The location was perfect - halfway between the shopping and the beach - and the atmosphere was really nice. The hotel is definitely older but in that intangible historic way. We had a small room for a quick weekend getaway and it was just perfect. It seems like they are slowly renovating throughout the hotel so I hope they don't strip away the character. The small winding hallways and the peculiar room layouts (including small closets and sinks in the bedrooms) all made the place that much more unique. I felt that I was on the set of an old movie.
The Magnolia Room is closed for the season but the King Edward Bar was really a hidden gem. The food was phenomenal (my wife is vegetarian and they had some good options) - he pimento cheese, cauliflower risotto, and roasted oysters were all excellent - but the kitchen closes early. We stopped by both nights and it looked dead but was absolutely PACKED for the late night crowd. What a fun hotel, I am definitely going to make this my base whenever I am staying in Cape May.

There is a small kitchen area with a fridge, coffee pot, and tea pot, no other amenities available. The room was warm which was nice with the cold winds outside. We did not interact with any staff members except via phone call and they were extremely friendly, we did visit during the off season which is why we didnt see any staff members, but the room was very clean and cozy. One thing to note is that this hotel and many others in this area are historic, so no elevators and many steps, very charming but if you are older or have balance or mobility issues just be cautious of where you book and ask for a first floor room when and if possible! Just a heads up.

Would not recommend this to anyone. The staircase (no elevator) is far too steep and narrow to be considered safe. Our room was very dirty with chipping paint and cobwebs all over the ceiling. Walls very thin, we could hear the family next to us crystal clear. And the very loud bar just below our room made for sleeping impossible.

Shops and restaurants were in walking distance! Also the beach! There wasn't a kitchen in our room or my friends room. It was a nice historic hotel and a fair price. Our only complaint was not knowing there was two booked weddings during our stay. Which limited our access to the restaurant and bar in the hotel. So we learned a lesson about CapeMay, September is wedding season there. Not the hotels fault, but we will ask next time if they are having big events.

Wonderful stay, the room was super clean! The chalfonte is right within walking distance of everything in Cape May. Affordable rooms and great location!

We enjoyed the large amount of common area seating including a lovely wrap around porch. There was a dearth of horizontal surfaces in the room.

air conditioning as basic amenity. no TV/mini fridge/microwave in rooms. convenient to the mall and the beach but no direct view. while we enjoyed the historic hotel overall, was not quite a fan of all the stairs to the rooms and lack of dependable nearby (free) parking, especially with all the scheduled events/weddings at the hotel. On a positive
note, dinner at the magnolia room restaurant was amazing. fried chicken was most definitely worth the hype.

Bad hotel in a great area. Arrived to find sand all over floors (hadn't been vacuumed), doors that wouldn't close, and loud machine(s) in room above whirring all night long. Definitely would NOT recommend.

There was no TV or hair dryer, which was probably stated in the description so it’s my fault for not realizing. Otherwise it was a very great stay! Super clean rooms and close to the beach and Washington Street Mall!

Beautiful historical hotel with excellent accommodations and staff. Unfortunately area parking is limited, no TVs and shared bathrooms for some units. Additionally no elevator. Breakfast is served for a fee and live music on most days. Beautiful lounges, dining room and porches. Excellent place.

Very thin walls, rug in room was covered in sand, ceiling fan was on with no way to turn it off the whole trip. Could hear the room next to us being intimate every night and they were not loud

We chose a room based on a photo during the reservation but the room turned out to have a different configuration. The room was comfortable. Good a/c. We had to evacuate one night at10:50pm due to fire alarm but fire dept personnel let us back in a half hour or so later. Self serve water and coffee are available downstairs everyday. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. Hotel is a few blocks from the beach, restaurants and the Washington st mall, so good location if you don’t mind walking a little.

The hotel room was great, the downstairs bar had nice music too. Note that this hotel does provide any beach towels but they do offer beach umbrellas.

There was not enough parking. Last night, in the rain, I had to park 2 streets over (Franklin and Kearney). There is not an elevator, and its tough if your put on the third floor. I understand victorian charm, but the place needs updated. There was a humming/buzzing sound-not sure what that was. I noticed a little peeling paint. I did not eat in the restaurant, so I can't comment on that. The shame of it is the property is rather conveniently located. Also, at least in my room, no fridge or tv, and only one ice machine in the whole place on the first floor. Again, being on the third floor makes this a little inconvenient. No offense, but I was glad to leave today.

Overall run down. There is only air conditioning ( window units) in the rooms. Boiling hot in lobby and hallways. Run by kids. I will not return to this hotel. Although I e block from the beach. The air conditioning unit had trouble keeping the room cold. The bathroom was hot because of poor air conditioning

Victorian era hotel with some modern amenities. Pros:
- The staff were friendly and accommodating.
- Loved the complimentary beach equipment rental
- and cleanliness.
Cons:
- Lights flickered and
- wifi did not work in our room.
- At some point during our stay, the water dispenser in the lobby broke and was not replaced.

Beautiful happening hotel very close to the beach. Staff was very kind. They give you beach chairs with umbrellas, and fresh coffee in the morning. The only negative was the bed size. It was a bit difficult to sleep on a full size, so if thats an issue make sure you book a room with a queen.

We have been traveling to cape may for decades. The Chalfonte staff was THE NICEST staff we have ever encountered. The room was perfect for us, and we were far enough away that we went to bed early and were unbothered by the music playing late into the night. The BEST part was the beach chairs and umbrellas that you get set up for you on the beach for being a Chalfonte guest. This was a perfect get away and we loved everything about Chalfonte!

We had a very nice day at the shelf on hotel. The staff are lovely. The rooms were clean, and that charm of the Victorian style building and history were great.
