Wrote a thorough review on Google which is full of similar reviews, I wish I navigated the fake reviews and sorted by recent and helpful before booking my stay. This place is literally next to the Alamo, that’s the only redeeming quality. Skip the stag and stop in for 10-20 minutes to take pictures, all the best features are free. I wouldn’t stay here again

The lobby level of the hotel is beautiful. Our room was ok. We had a balcony that was shared with two other rooms. It looked out over the open area near the Alamo. The air conditioning in our room was not good. It never got very cool and it wasn’t even that hot outside. Talked to the desk and they said they would send someone up to check it. He brought us a box fan and said we were too far from the chillers for the A/C to reach. The bathroom had areas of rust and the bathtub had mold in the grout. The tub also had pieces of ceramic missing from the interior. I would not care to stay there again.

Front desk staff was wonderful!.

The valet a little sketchy as we got in later. There was construction taking place so that made it difficult. Upon arriving the valet was supposed to send a text for us to complete the set up but we never received it.

Room was beautiful. There were like little gnats? But it was fine. The water was also turning hot and cold on our second night. Overall the place was wonderful and great. Staying at a historic hotel was a dream and the architecture was superb. Would love to come back.

Everything was wonderful in this historical hotel. It's right next to the Alamo and River Center Shopping Mall and the San Antonio Riverwalk only a few blocks away. I paid $363.55 for two nights with all taxes and fees...group discount for scheduled events held there with Texas Historical Association.
Parking was also discounted with group...normally $55 overnight.

The room was a premium room (Roy Rogers) suite very nice balcony bathroom had a high step and the cold water bath knob wasn’t working well. The main restaurant appeared closed but there is may other options surrounding the hotel. Plus a Starbucks and an IHOP, a tavern and a Taco bar type setup.

The lobby is the best ! Huge and very spacious. Carpets seem to not get cleaned daily we arrived on a Tuesday and left late on Thursday, same small pieces of papers and stuff still on the floors in common areas.

Staff was very pleasant and helpful. There was a Alamo type of reenactment going on around 10am which was short but very interesting and informative. The area is exceptional even late at night.

The history makes this charming hotel all the better and staff is very friendly. If driving and dropping off luggage it can be a little tricky finding the drop off point. Seek parking on the street in paid parking and download the parking app. It will save a ton of parking money!

This hotel is in a great location but the Hotel itself was dirty, no room service, the gym had a terrible smell, the pool was never clean and the bad part of it all I came back home feeling sick because the smell of the hotel was terrible. My recommendation if you don’t care stay but if you are not willing to sacrifice your vacation comfort DONT stay at this Hotel

I love old things, so The Menger Hotel has been on my list forever. And yes—it’s beautiful. But she comes with quirks. Valet was friendly, but no one mentioned you have to respond to a random, non-local text and enter payment info to get your car back. So when we’re trying to leave for dinner? Delay. Because my fiancé doesn’t click mystery links (as one shouldn’t). You can charge it to your room—would’ve been great to know upfront.

Walking in? Stunning. Antique everything, historic photos, total time capsule vibes. Then you hit the front desk… and the energy drops. Check-in was awkward, they couldn’t find our reservation (it was there), and the vibe was very “this is your fault somehow.” Not rude, just not welcoming.

Room 3067: clean, decent size, nothing special. Bed was comfortable. Partial courtyard view, partial rooftop. Fine.

Now the “old hotel” realities:

Room was muggy, even with AC low
Bathroom is tight (my 6’1” fiancé struggled)
Shower is basic and takes forever
Flush a nearby toilet? Enjoy your surprise ice bath

A few extras:

Dirty plate in the hallway for over a day
One lamp didn’t work
Pool location remains a mystery

The bar is cool, service is… consistent with the rest of the hotel (present, not warm).

Location is right in the tourist area—convenient but busier than we prefer.

Final take:
The Menger Hotel is gorgeous and worth experiencing if you love historic hotels. Just don’t expect modern comfort or standout service.

Sink was clogged for 4 days. Asked 3 staff members for help, one cleaning, two at front desk, no help. Finally took picture of sink about to overflow to someone at front desk, they snaked it that night, but it reclogged in the morning. Gave up, lived with a dirty water sink for 3 days/night. Note, just brushing teeth, no shaving etc.

I had high expectations for this hotel as it was recommended by my step daughter. However when we checked in it was similar to going up to the counter of en Seven eleven store. Also I found out they have no one to help with the luggage und I had to get the cart, load it up, then take it up to my room. The television clicker had low batteries so I had to get up out of bed to get close to the television to change en channel. After 5 hours of driving it was just disappointing. When traveling I always bring en night light to place in the bathroom. It was then I found the receptical did not work. In the early hours ran out of toliet paper und no extra roll was in the room. So had to phone to have someone bring me up en roll. In the morning it was then I was informed the breakfast restaurant was closed for renovations. Nothing showed that on their website. So had to go across the street for en en cup of coffee! It was extremely disappointing stay at such en historical hotel.

Street in front of hotel no longer exists and we spend an hour trying to get there. When I called for assistance phone was answered and cut off. We finally just parked and walked to hotel luggage and all. Never again.

The hotel is a historic icon and they’ve kept the old world charm preserved beautifully. However, the lobby had an odd smell, like ammonia from the public bathroom. This is my second time staying here and the odour hasn’t changed. The rooms are spacious and well kept but was missing a few toiletries and one of the lamps wasn’t working. It wasn’t an issue though; as soon as we voiced our concern, they gave us everything we needed for the room. Valet was so incredibly kind even at 3am (took a family member to the airport). Besides the ammonia smell, we enjoyed our stay and look forward to staying again.

The lobby is beautiful as well as the courtyard. Difficult to locate the valet parking, so parked a few blocks away as most streets are closed nearby. The room was nice, but the age of the hotel shows with regard to plumbing. I am sure it would not be possible to update a historic structure such as this. Loved the adjacent bar visited by Teddy Roosevelt. Our room had a view of the Alamo grounds.

The Hotel itself is okay and the location is great but you got the impression the staff didn't want to help and though it wasn't a big deal there was no wifi in the hotel. When we finally asked about no wifi and not being able to log into the apps loaded on the tv in the room the front desk said, 'oh yeah, there's no internet at all, just basic cable. Sorry.' A huge deal, no, but super annoying.

Staff when checking in and checking out were rude with no reason. A simply thank you or a look in the eye would’ve done it. Left me on hold 15 minutes when dialed the front office to ask for the valet parking. When called back guy was rude saying he’s in the middle of a check in I needed to wait. When checking out I politely gave the keys back to the receptionist, and she rudely said just leave them there I’ll get them. Left me hanging with the keys. If they’re not happy with what they do, Menger management should n must pay attention to that. They could loose a lot of customer from coming back to stay there again.

We got the honeymoon suite and the room was amazing let me start with that. What we did not so much like was the jacuzzi tub is really made for one person. It was a very narrow tub for it to be a honeymoon suite. The room is also not labeled so we went in circles looking for it and my husband asked one of the cleaning ladies and she wasn’t sure until she tried our key on one of the doors and it opened it up. The dining room wasn’t open and said it wouldn’t be until further notice. You can hear the traffic out in the streets and in the hall from people. Oh and parking was the worst. To valet park it’s hard to find but in the parking lot down from the hotel it was $215 for two days. I really enjoyed my stay it was great definitely need some information about parking a little bit better but we had a blast!!

No info given on how much parking was. Didn't realize staying at the hotel meant I still had to pay for parking. 60 dollars is ridiculous. Our bathtub faucet leaked all night, and you could hear it. We checked in at 2;30, and there were plates on the floor of the hallway across the room for us. Stayed there until we checked out the next dat at 11am.

The Menger is a historic building. I love staying at Historical places, but it felt different this time. Didn’t feel as upscale as in the past. The colonial restaurant wasn’t open so that took a lot away from our experience. Just felt like an aged hotel with a bunch of loud families with annoying teenagers staying there. Lots of construction and street closures in the area too. Staff was not overly helpful. Just average check in. No help getting bags from valet. Room was fine. Tiny bathroom. Ok bed.

I make sure we book this for our family when we stay in the downtown area. This hotel is aged but has character and is well maintained. Enjoy the fact that we step out of the hotel doors and immediately see the historic San Antonio square with the Alamo.

Very long, slow line to check in. Room with 1 king bed was the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in, but clean. Bed comfort was average. Tub faucet was leaking with a steady flow that was loud. Not a drip, a steady flow. Maintenance claims \"all the faucets leak\". The shower head was powerful, but hot and cold came from two different faucets and it was either scalding hot or ice cold. It would also change temperature on it's own. So you are under the water and it goes hotter or colder on its own, makes for a very unpleasant shower. Impossible to sit on the toilet without hitting your arm on the counter. Very tight corner and my arm is bruised from hitting it almost every time. AC cannot go below 65 and room never got below 68, it was not cool enough. We threw our dirty clothes on the bottom of the closet floor and when we picked them up to pack, they were SOAKING wet. No idea how the closet floor got so wet that it seeped into our clothes. Soaking wet, not damp. And the clothes smelled musty from the water that was on the floor. There was no remote for the TV. There were coffee pods, but no coffee maker in the room. The room was clean and valet parking at $52 per night was expensive, but they were efficient. 100% would not stay here again. The Menger's attitude is, \"We're an old hotel, this is the best we can do.\" At $250 per night, plus $52 per night parking, I expected so much better. Absolutely the worst hotel I've booked through Hotels.com and easily the most expensive.

All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. One of our patio chairs had a significant broken wire that scratched the back of my leg, and I was very surprised that it didn't tear my pants. We went to the lobby to advise the lady who checked us in and she thanked me for reporting it and said she would get it taken care of. However, when we got back to the room hours later it was not taken care of. There were two of us in the room, but a complementary water was only provided for one person. There was only one bar of soap available that had to be used for both the lavatory and the bath. The shower, grout at the top definitely needed to be cleaned. At $350 per night I really expected a better quality of amenities.

The overall condition of the building was very poor. The first thing you notice after walking in the building is the musty odor. Everything appears to be dusty and abandoned. Our room was dirty. Lots of hair and random debris on the bathroom floor. There was a water puddle in front of the fridge from a water leak coming from the refrigerator. Most of the electrical outlets did not work. The shower would not hold temperature. It would fluctuate from freezing cold to burning hot without touching the faucet. The TV did not work. Calling for help was a nightmare. The Wi-Fi did not work. When we contacted the hotel for help, they provided a 1-800 number for us to call. We eventually just gave up on it.

The hotel was absolutely stunning. My only complaint was that after I got in late on Sunday night after two connecting flights from Toronto, I settled into my room only to figure out an hour later that the AC was simply not working. A maintenance person came up and declared it unfixable so, close to midnight, I had to transfer to a new room which was a pretty big hassle. This was compounded by the fact that I had to be switched on early on Monday for the conference I was attending. The new room was also lacking a coffee maker, making Monday AM harder than it shoulud have been!

The maid staff was totally unresponsive. Left a message for wash rags (only had one for 2 night stay of two people) and no one bothered to respond.
The bed cover sheet was so thin it was like paper. The management must really be trying to cut corners. There was also no concierge at the
Desk, even though it was Spring Break and the hotel was packed.

I absolutely loved The Menger. The history, the clean and comfy rooms, lounging by the pool, the nearby shops and The Menger Bar.
They also offer valet parking. Joel was my favorite attendant, his attention to detail and kindness were above and beyond.

It's also in a fantastic location. Enjoy a beverage lunch on the patio looking at the Alamo.
A short walk away, you will be able to enjoy the Riverwalk.

This will be my spot whenever I'm in San Antonio.

After an early pre check in, the hotel never called us to say the room was ready. Their website was inaccurate on several food related items. Trash left in the hall by other rooms was not picked up even after 24 hours. The door to the actual room was not very secure. The shower would. It stay a consistent temperature even with the nobs adjusted. The only good thing about the hotel was the location

The building is beautiful and the location can’t be beat. excellent in both respects.

Where I was disappointed was the lack of basic room service. There is no regular housekeeping, and getting essentials like toilet paper, trash removal or fresh towels was unexpectedly difficult. I had to call multiple times for towels, and they weren’t delivered until I went down to the front desk hours later. Even then, the toilet paper I requested was never brought, and we ultimately had to take a roll from a public restroom.

This might be understandable if expectations were clearly communicated upfront, but for a hotel of this caliber, guests reasonably expect trash removal, restocked supplies, and clean towels without having to chase them down.

We got the Teddy Roosevelt Suite a few days ago.
Hotel is in a great location. Very beautiful hotel.
My only real issue is that when we checked into our room and went into it there was a room service tray from previous guest sitting outside our door with leftover food and drinks on it. When we went to checkout, it was still sitting outside our door.
We didn't have a robe in the bathroom but there was a tag stating that if you like it you can buy one. I called front desk immediately to ensure I wouldn't be charged for such. Would of liked to see if it was worth buying but oh well.
The room was a little musty but once you turn on the big portable ac units they have (which is a bit of an eye sore) it was better and with being an old historical hotel it's understandable.
Went to the famous bar they have and it was wonderful and staff was great. I accidentally left or dropped my credit card and realized when we got to the Tower of America. Called the bar and they said they had it and they did hold it for me until we made it back.

Lovely historic hotel, great location, great vibe. Mild downsides include cold outdoor pool, thin walls, no microwave, only some ice machines work. Other than that, a perfect experience. Oh, and save yourself the money and park at St Mary’s public parking.
