The worst hotel in Cardiff (worse than my tent)

This has to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. The check in was in a neighbouring Greek Gyro take away and that should have told me something about what was ahead!

My room was 99 steps up, through dirty and threadbare carpet! The place needs a complete renovation it’s really disgusting. I had been camping in my tent for the prior 5 nights and seriously thought about leaving and doing another night in the tent but I really need a shower. Almost everything in the room was dirty, stained or broken, often all three!!

Grotty room. Many stairs with borderline dangerous badly worn carpet. Check in and the people were good but the room was disappointing. The window has broken glass which is repaired with tape. Mould in the room. Chair is in dangerous condition. Badly in need of a refit before a serious accident happens. Would I book again? NO!!!. For the cost of the room I feel it's too expensive as there are better options locally for a similar price.

This property was totally unsuitable for us. We are both in our 70's. There were 3 flights of stairs and no lift. The Stairwell carpets were worn and threadbare and a trip hazard. There was no Reception and the Keys had to be picked up from the Gyros Shop next door.

My room was on the top floor and was unacceptably freezing cold. I did call, and an hour later was brought a small space heater, which only slightly helped, while sleeping in my winter jacket and using the comforters on both beds…luckily had a room with 2 beds. Went for cheapest option, and guess you get what you pay for, but still feel I paid too much to feel like I was sleeping outside.

Was easy enough to find, right in the centre of Cardiff. 5 minutes from the Principality Stadium.
Very comfy bed. Slept well.
77 steps up to the room. With a suitcase, arthritic knees and COPD it was a hike.
No water in the morning. Couldnt have a shower or make a drink.

Check in late only to find out that the light in my room was not working. First impression is already bad. Small room, broken window, dirty walls, water in the bathroom difficult to navigate (too hot or too cold). When I complained and asked for a refund due to the light, they accused me of using the bathroom, which I fairly used for washing face. Surely not caring for the guests. Will surely NOT come back, and I'd like to say: DO NOT stay here. You will not have proper greeting and service.

Fairly large room, good view of the town, central location.
Plenty of tea, coffee, milk, kettle in room. even an iron and ironing board.
The TV was small but worked well.
Access is via a long staircase over 3 floors pending on which room you get, best to travel light or it can be bit of a haul. We have used ML lodge before and would use it again, its great value for money. One tip, lock your door from inside/outside as it does not lock automatically on closure to avoid unexpected interruptions or being turned over if you go out.

Basic room with en-suite. Check in via the kebab shop went well!! Stair area was shabby but seemed clean. The room had all of the necessities (tea/coffee making facilities, TV, shower gel, toilet paper) and the bed was comfy and sheets seemed clean.
The room itself was also shabby. The window frames haven’t been touched for years. The decorating likewise. There was a peeling poster on the wall and cracks all over the place. It was just very, very tired. But it was only £38 for the night and I only needed a comfy bed and a shower in the morning so it ticked those boxes.

Good if you want to party

Went for the wrestling with friends. Really convenient as it is right in the Main Street but…it is right on the Main Street so it is LOUD. With a group of friends out on the lash it’s perfect. Family intending to sleep maybe not but I found it comfortable and a great place to use as a base to enjoy the nightlife.

The door to the toilet didn’t close.

I don’t mind, but you should know there are no elevators; there were 58 steps to reach our room.

It was good for the price, and excellent location for nightlife and shopping; a decent walk to the waterfront where I enjoyed looking at several species of birds.

Wouldn’t have paid more than £5 if I knew how bad

Guys - Yes it is cheap, but there is cheap abs then there is not even paying that little should allow anyone to stay in such a disgusting , shocking environment . So it starts with checking in, this is a sign in the door saying to go to the Kebab shop next door to collect keys, and then it starts you go in, and immediately start the climb, if your lucky it’s only 20 stairs to climb, abs they are steep to. If you are in room 7 like us, that is 75 stairs to climb, which is carpeted by a carpet that your feet stick to, it is filthy, then you get to your room. The door had foot marks as if it had been kicked in many times, then the room - Woooow - No pictures in the wall and curtains hanging off the rail, the walls had holes in the plaster, and hand marks all over them, the TV the size of a postage stamp, and the electric heater that ‘cannot be legal’ the beds would of been more comfortable if mad of concrete, and the bedding even though washed was covered in old stains. Again the carpet was torn and filthy.

Then to finish there was the bathroom, urghhhh, the shower just abs I mean just produced water when turned on, and again the floor was disgusting… and when leaving on seeing the cleaner with 12 toilet roles with a price ‘£1.69’ on it summed it up - then the disaster was finalised by dropping the keys back to the kebab shop
You may wonder why no photo’s and the truth is I wanted no trace of this stay anywhere to be found, as it was simply awful.

What a smelly and dirty place , stinks of damp throughout very steep stairs with ripped and stinking carpet , finally got to our room after what felt like a thousand steps , where do i start 1st woodwork dirty 2nd carpet more like wipe your feet on the way out 3rd bed like a concrete slab 4th shower all mouldy didnt dare use it , 5th woken up every hour with doors slamming and banging , 6th fan kept coming on in bathroom 7th green fire exit sign lighting the room up 8th get woken up by police banging on door at 5.30 in morn wrong room , 9th pick keys up from a greasy takeaway 10th tiny tv , wish i had read reviews 1st , would of been cleaner and comfier to sleep with the homeless on streets

Great for a clean comfortable good value room

Clean basic hotel good value . Good location if you want to be central to the bars. No lift and 6 stories. Very narrow steep staircases. I had a bike which wasn’t great.
Rooms are good , clean with tea and coffee and surprisingly quiet considering on main bar strip (my room was at back ) . However actual in building you can hear everything , especially doors slamming this is pretty unavoidable .

Good for budget short stay

If you are looking for something just to sleep at night and sightseeing whole day this small hotel is perfect. It’s old and worn out, definitely need some refurbishment and maintenance but the shower was hot and with good water pressure and bed sheets were clean (one of the beds not too comfy but it was ok). Highly recommended for budget short stay.

Our room did not match the photos

Our room did not look much like the photos shown on Hotels.com - the check in instructions on here are also wrong as the hotel they send you too no longer deals with this property, you have to go to a chicken shop instead!
The bathroom light was falling off the ceiling, the shower temperature when from freezing to boiling in a second; there was an emergency light in the room with a very bright green LED that lit up the room all night.
There are lots of stairs, but that was not too much of a problem.
One of the beds was damaged and made a loud noise whenever you moved. The room was really hot, even with a fan on.
It wasn't a good night’s sleep and I cannot understand why there are so many good reviews on here. Ok it was cheap, but didn't quite tick all the minimum requirements for a basic room

We booked this hotel after reading all the reviews so we knew what to expect. Yes, the building is old and has no lifts. Yes, the furniture and the windows are single glazed BUT the bed was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was spotless with beautiful fluffy towels, we had tea,coffee, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, spare heater, spare fan and free wi-fi. It was right in the city centre a 5 minute walk from the train station. To sum up, this is an old hotel but it is cheap and cheerful, extremely good value and I would stay there again in a heart beat.

A budget hotel and didn't expect any more. I understand why the price was so high at £150 due to the rugby international match, but to be 5 times more was very steep for the room. Nevertheless, very convenient location and appreciated the generous discount for parking in the very nearby NCP car park.

our room was at the front of the hotel right in the heart of a street filled with clubs and bars, wooden windows meant no noise was kept out so don't expect to get any sleep with the shouting, fights, screaming and breaking glass. If you do mange to sleep you will be woken by the street urchins that camp out opposite in the morning shouting down the street to another one cos that easier than walking down and talking to them. You need to go to another hotel opposite to check in as there is no reception here. Have to pay refundable £20 or leave some id to acquire your room key,lots of stairs to keep you fit as no lift. Plus side the room was spacious, the bed comfortable, clean, you do iron and board as well as a hairdryer in the room, rare nowadays. bathroom was a good size it is a box shower but it worked properly(not just a trickle of water) maybe could do with a slightly larger TV for the distance of watching and checking wall heaters would be a bonus as ours did not work so the room was freezing. We were only there due to a show that was on in the arena. My overall experience of first time to Cardiff has not inspired me to want to revisit it.

Sleepless in cardiff.

Mistake we made was that this central location would be convienient. The trade off was a room which was not double glazed situated above the taxi rank. The tooting of taxi horns till 4.30 in the morning and general crowd noise outweighed the location. The 1 1/2 hrs peace before the council vehicles started their clean up at 6am did not make up for this. Have cancelled our next stay in 2 weeks time in favour of the mile walk and a good nights sleep.

Positives:

- good central location near Cardiff Castle and Millenium Centre
- friendly helpful staff
- decent size room

Areas for improvement

- I use VPN for security when travelling. Unsure why the WIFI did not allow this
- having to carry bags up to the Sandringham reception only to go back to ML Lodge was annoying. Maybe a door with a door code or a lock box with keys would be better
- for a fairly old hotel that has not been renovated for a while, the hotel was on the pricey side.

Worst bed I have ever slept in

Very basic rooms which was fine for our one night stay. However, the beds are awful, so lumpy that you have no choice but to sleep on top of the duvet to smooth out some of the lumps if you want to get some sleep. Unforgivable for a hotel. Also lots of narrow stairs and no lift. Not a good experience even for one night. You would be better off sleeping in the car.

second time staying at lodge. Facilities are great and rooms , bed linen and towels spotless. Iron, ironing board, hairdryer and tea making facilities better than some hotels. Ideally located for castle, civic center, shopping arcades, restaurants and bars. Louis restaurant across the road is a must. Room 2 may get hot in summer as I do not think the windows open but a fan is supplied.

It was alright. Nothing fancy. Quite honestly, I would pay a little more to stay a place that's nicer, even though it was in a good location. It seemed like their were better deals around and we didn't get so lucky with this hotel. Also take a look at the photos on tripadvisor. They always help. The covers were dirty and the shower was kinda grimy and we were all the way on the top floor, up about 8 staircases with no lift. I would not stay here again.

The hotel and room are basic, however it is good for the budget traveler. Check in is completed at a hotel on the other side of the street and a £20 key deposit is required. There is no lift, so may not be suitable for people with poor mobility. The room is basic, but for the price you can't really complain. It is clean and was plenty big enough for me. The location is great as it is close to lots of shops and pubs and the staff are very friendly

Worst Hotel Ever

We had booked for two nights but left after one even though we had already paid for it and went to the Marriott to stay. The cleanliness was appalling. The rug was so dirty that I refused to walk around barefoot. There was mold in the phone box of a shower. There was no reception desk, we had to go across the street to check in at another hotel. My daughter's bed sounded like it was going to fall apart. The stool did break when we moved it. The room was not adequately heated. It was very difficult to find with a very small sign. The write up on the web site needs to stress that most of the rooms are up multiple flights of stairs with no lift available. It was the worst overnight experience I have ever had. The hotel was totally misrepresented in the pictures made available when we were looking for a place to stay in Cardiff. There were two gentlemen's clubs very near it and I did not feel safe there at all. There was even a dirty spoon left on the floor and the teapot was left dirty.

Good value, but check in was across the street. Room was at the third flight of really narrow steep stairs which were a bit scary. Sheets and bathroom were clean but there were stains on the walls. Bed was a bit uncomfortable, but room was quiet. Good for an overnight stay but don't expect this to be a hotel.

Arriving in Cardiff the ML Lodge is only a short walk from the train station, with check in at the Sandringham hotel about 30 seconds from the lodge. This was easy to find however the ML Lodge is a little more difficult to find due to only having a small entrance next to a fast food takeaway. The stairs to the rooms are relatively steep and worn, and the layout of the stairwell is a bit strange (please note there is no elevator either). Once in the room, the beds and relative cleanliness is acceptable, good for a single night. The electrics however blew during my stay, which was extremely frustrating as this took a few hours to fix in which I was needed to be present when I wanted to be with my friends preparing for our new year. After this was fixed the room was bearable, but this definitely put a damper on the stay.

The worst room I have ever. Building not manned, not secure doors from the. A might as well have been Everest, there are so many stairs to climb and we only had room 4, i think there are 9 rooms. Curtains hanging off window, furniture looked as if it was out of a skip and sanded down, \"carpet\" in bedroom, more like dirty underlay and carpet on stairs, what was left of it ,was threadbare. Have never seem a more depressing room. We did not stay after looking around for 5 minutes called and said that we were not happy and wanted a full refund. There was argument at all - I wonder why?? We booked a travel lodge which was cheaper and room was like a palace in comparison. Avoid like the plague!!!!!!!!!

It was in a good location and the staff were helpful...also there was a discount on the car park. That's the only good I can say....The room was tiny and grubby, it is being used as a party hotel and I would be concerned if there was a fire.

Cheap & Cheerful

Good value for one night. Very basic, and nothing special. The room (1) was next to some washing machines and dryers, kinda noisy, if that bothers you. The shower temperature was inconsistent. There is a £20 deposit for your key, so be prepared. They looked after my case on check out all day for free, that was awesome.

Location perfect but rooms needs attention!!

This \"hotel\" really needs some attention. The room was dirty (cobwebs etc), the mattress is in a bad shape and the walls are in real need of some paint...

If this company gives some attention to these rooms and get some new furniture (won't cost a lot of money BTW) and a new carpet they will be able to rent this room at a better and more profitable price and will be certain that they will get better reviews.

Good location but if youre fussy, its a no no.

The lodge is in the middle of the city which is accessible to everything.
The room on the other hand is substandard. The shower door wouldnt close, ceiling paint hanging down, carpet looks very dirty, the kettle still dusty on the edge, the bed is uncomfortable and we can feel the spring on our backs. They didnt supply a toilet mat but was replenished upon request the next day. The lodge uses a hotel opposite the road forchecking in and out and no staff is on site.if youre a person who doesnt complain much I guess its ok.

Night out

Ideal location in the center of Cardiff - I used this Hotel as a stop over for a Night out so didn't expect too much - however the access is up a flight of stairs which in itself is not a problem but the decor and carpets were a little threadbare and looked a little grubby. The room itself was clean and tidy but the facilities weren't in the best of condition - the trouser press / ironing board fell apart and the iron didn't work, the door to the shower only closed with a good yank and the shower head riser fell apart. You then have to contend with the scourge of a lot of hotels - boiling hot and freezing cold water (at the same time). Overall tho a couple of drinks and you get a good nights sleep!!!

Not bad for the price, you have to go across the street to another hotel to check in then they give you the key to that door to go up to your room. By no means was it nice but for a cheap stay it was worth it.

This is an OLD property. No lift, so if you get room 8 or 9 you are climbing five stories on narrow stairs. Old furnishings; old mattress. But, right in downtown. Easy walk to anywhere. Drunks on Friday and Saturday night make a huge amount of noise till the wee hours, and you will definitely hear them.

Very basic, inexpensive city centre hotel. No lifts so be prepared for a bit of a workout on the stairs. Room decor was tired looking but clean, beds comfy, small working tv, basic tea/coffee facilities. Small shower cubicle in bathroom, plenty of clean towels. Ideal if you are in Cardiff for a night out & want a budget room to stay in after a night out watching bands/clubbing.
