I traveled to several places between San Fran and San Jose. For the price and after experiencing staying In several places Id say this was a poor experience, witnessed people getting kicked out, and several others having strong arguments, all with the same guy at the front desk. From what I learned about this place, it’s a family business, PRIVATE PROPERTY and they reserve the right to refuse service to anyone at their discretion, In my experience and opinion it can put the traveler at a strict and though spot should you have a problem with the staff(owner). I had difficulty for failing to read all the rules and regulations, SPECIALLY the ones about them having an age limit of 30 years old and under, note for private rooms they said it was ok which I had a reservation for the day I arrived one night only and a private room for later that week from feb 2nd-8th, unfortunately my roommate got delayed and arrived after midnight, I checked In first at 3pm so I was already there, alerted front desk around 8pm, the response to the situation was that “she would have to find another place to sleep and come back the next day to check In at 3pm” that statement alone and the way it was said set the tone for how the conversation went, after trying to reason with the guy I just had to say “ok, thank you” and walk away, all of that for him to text me afterwards and now typing In a more professional manner that the case would be reviewed and she could stay. Nobody seemed happy there.

I had an amazing stay at The European Hostel in San Francisco, and honestly, everything exceeded my expectations. The rooms were spotlessly clean, the atmosphere was welcoming and calm, and the location is super convenient for getting around the city.

What truly made the experience exceptional, though, was the front desk staff—especially Nick. From the moment I arrived, Nick was professional, kind, and incredibly helpful. He went above and beyond to make sure I felt comfortable, answered every question with patience, and handled everything smoothly and efficiently. You can tell he genuinely cares about guests and takes pride in his work.

It’s rare to find someone who combines warm hospitality, clear communication, and true professionalism the way Nick does. He really sets the standard and makes the hostel feel like a safe, friendly home rather than just a place to sleep.

If you’re looking for a clean, well-run hostel with outstanding customer service, The European Hostel is the place to stay—and Nick at the front desk is a huge reason why. Highly recommended, and I would absolutely stay here again!

Review Content:
DANGER! THIS HOSTEL IS RUN BY CRIMINALS. DO NOT STAY HERE.
1. ASSAULT, GUN THREAT & INTIMIDATION (The Incident):
On New Year's Eve, I returned soaking wet from the rain and used the laundry machine because no staff was present. The manager appeared and immediately became violent.
• Physical Assault: He pushed and shoved me physically and threw my wet clothes on the dirty floor.
• Death Threat: When I tried to explain, HE THREATENED TO SHOOT ME.
• Corruption/Intimidation: He threatened to call the police. When I stood my ground and told him, \"Please call them,\" he bragged, \"The police know me,\" implying he has local connections and is above the law.
He then kicked me out into the heavy rain in the middle of the night. I was terrified for my life and powerless against his threats.
2. Theft & Scam:
He refused to refund my remaining nights and kept my $20 cash deposit. They force you to pay cash (against platform rules) and refuse to return it if you have an early flight.
3. Health Hazards:
The place is filthy. The toilet seat wipes off black with grime. Sheets have holes, and bed handles are broken/missing screws.
Summary:
This man is violent, claims to be above the police, and threatens guests with guns. Hotels.com should ban this place immediately.

Really bad experience. First, the check-in time was 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM, we already confirmed we will be there before 10:00 PM but the staff kept on reminding and disturbing us in uncomfortable tone. We ended up being there at 9:30 PM to check-in and the Indian guy didn’t let us get the room because we are not enough 21 while we just followed what Expedia said (minimum check-in age is 18 years old). Our stay was nice, We have stayed here a few times. When we stay here we get a one bed private room with shared bathroom. We love that there is a full kitchen for us to use, we enjoy being able to make our own meals. The room is a little on the small side and is literally just a bed in a room with no other furnishings, no table or tv.... Just a bed and a window that is located inside the building and across from another rooms window. The bathroom is nice and typically clean with plenty of hot water. The gentleman in the office is very nice. BE SURE TO READ THE INFORMATION THEY SEND YOU! CHECK OUT IS 10 AM SHARP! Also they require a $20 cash deposit for the rooms key card, don't loose the card, and you get your deposit back when you check out.

This youth hostel has a low rating but I've stayed more than 7 nights without any issues. Its centrally located and I always have a clean bed to sleep in. The manager is super nice and knows the area well. Always have some cash as he does charge a refundable cash deposit.

Manager was extremely rude, when I went to check out and give the key back he physically blocked me and started yelling at me and told me I had to wait for him to review security footage to make sure I had not taken a pair of his disgusting sheets, which I pointed at were on the floor in front of him. The disgusting hotel is only rivaled by the rudeness of the manager.

Disgusting place smells and looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since it was built over 100 years ago. It reeks of smoke and indian food. The walls have holes and are dirty and scratched. The bathroom are a messy and have poop on the walls. Ironic since he never stops mentioning that this is his property and that we need to keep everything looking good. Customer service is horrible. The owner is so full of himself and whenever you try to point something his excuse is always that they’re not or that the building is old. Also terrible area homeless crackheads everywhere and it never feels safe.

The European Hostile is okay. It's average. A Meh if maybe. It's quiet and I got some good sleep. However the bathrooms need a lot of work. If one shower doesn't have hot water then you have to go into another shower that has hot water, problems with the light staying on, and a overflowing waste basket.

No this place isn't big and fancy but it's a hole in wall place where it's quiet as soon as you get inside and place to get some sleep. It's worth its salt.

I had a very good experience at The European Hostel and would like to appreciate both the front desk and the day and night cleaning staff. They work hard every day to keep the place as clean and comfortable as possible for all guests.

I’ve seen some reviews saying the hostel is “smelly” or “dirty.” Yes, sometimes you might notice this—but it’s important to understand why. This is an economical shared hostel, and you’re sharing a room with 4 or 6 other people. Many guests are travelers or people working from out of state, and sometimes they don’t have the time to do laundry or organize their belongings until their days off. The front desk manager reminds them multiple times to keep things tidy, but he can’t force them if they truly don’t have the time—he respects their situation.

At the end of the day, you’re paying around $25 per night, so you can’t expect 5-star hotel facilities. What you can expect is a safe, budget-friendly place to stay, with a management team that works hard to accommodate everyone and make the best of a shared living environment.

If you’re looking for a low-cost option in San Francisco with a team that genuinely cares for its guests, The European Hostel is a solid choice.

My stay at The European Hostel was an excellent experience, and I want to especially recognize the amazing staff and front desk service. The facilities are well-maintained, the beds are comfortable, and the common areas are welcoming with a great atmosphere.

One thing that really stood out to me was seeing the front desk manager, Nick, personally taking care of the property. If he notices something doesn’t look clean or comfortable, he doesn’t wait for someone else—he will sweep, mop, and tidy up the rooms and kitchen himself. His goal is always to make sure every guest feels good energy and a positive vibe during their stay.

Nick is always ready to assist guests with a smile, no matter how busy things get. Unfortunately, I also witnessed times when some guests disrespected him or even threatened him, simply because they didn’t want to follow the house rules. These are rules that keep a shared space clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes people also leave bad reviews without realizing that they booked a shared facility with specific policies they agreed to before making a reservation.

It’s important to understand how much effort and hard work Nick puts in every single day. He treats the hostel like his own home and works tirelessly to keep it safe and comfortable for all. At the end of the day, he’s also human—he has feelings, and it’s natural for him to feel hurt when his dedication isn’t respected.

I didn’t know much about San Francisco when I booked this place, and I wasn’t aware that it is in an area called “the Tenderloin”, which is known to be one of the rougher areas. That being said, I had very little worry and no issues while I was there. This place was pretty much what I expected when I booked it; just a place for me to sleep. I booked a twin room to myself as I was over the age of 30 and it was all I needed. But know that the room is literally a twin bunk bud and that’s it. I would recommend a desk or a nightstand or something in there in the future. Would be nice, but I’m not complaining. My sheets were clean and I was comfortable, and that is all that matters.
Two recommendations I would make, other than a nightstand or something in the room, is a better cleaning in the shared bathrooms. I can tell they were serviced morning and night, but it would be beneficial to clean out the inside of the showers. They were pretty disgusting and stayed pretty gross the whole time I was there. Lastly, I think it would also be beneficial to vacuum the steps and steam clean them. They smell pretty bad.
Front desk employees were easy and friendly, and I greatly appreciate that. Kitchen had all I needed.
Overall, again, all I needed an expected. But a few considerations for the future would potentially give them a higher score, at least in my mind.

I had an absolutely amazing experience at The European Hostel! From the moment I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the friendly and professional staff who went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. The front desk team is knowledgeable, courteous, and genuinely cares about guests' comfort—Nikunj especially made the check-in smooth and gave great local tips!

The hostel is clean, secure, and well-maintained. The common areas are vibrant and great for meeting travelers from around the world. I loved relaxing on the rooftop terrace with beautiful views of the city!

Cheap, Affordable, and Not a Compromise

It was a good stay.

I wouldn't recommend this for some who's used to a \"silver spoon\" lifestyle as this is the equivalent of crashing on a friend's couch for a couple of days; not so much personal space, there's always someone in the bathroom, and there is very little regard for your sleeping schedule.

Expect what you pay for, but if the low price was the appeal to begin with, then understand that it's not a compromise to your safety. I found the staff to be very dedicated to their job and that gave me some peace of mind. Moreover, just sitting in the lobby with a menagerie of people felt like the start menu of a Persona game. It's a vibe.

Finally, there are small lockers around if you'd prefer some added security and there are female only rooms if that was a concern of yours. The immediate area feels a bit shady - especially at night - but I'm also from Indiana and was just getting used to being in a big city.

But again, it was a good stay.

Smelled awful and the kitchen and bathrooms were filthy. The staff were not courteous, and we heard the owner bad-mouth other guests in the shared kitchen. You can't beat the price though, and the room itself was fine. If this is all that's affordable for you, you'll be alright.

Questionable Age Limitations

Management refused to allow me to stay here due to my age (I am 33 years old). Their age requirements seem to fluxuate from day to day and other travelers have stated they have had same issues with the business who are significantly younger than me. Hotels.com refused to cancel the reservation or refund me.

This hotel is a total scam! The price is low but this is what they do, they overbooked their rooms then if you arrive and they don't have a room for you and you've already paid they tell you they're not going to rent it to you for any reason so you go to try to get a refund they refuse to refund and say that you arrived after 10:00 p.m. when you did not they figuring you don't have the time and energy to see it all the way through they get away with it again and again and again and again total scam artists thieves and liars.

Not worth any amount of money. Dangerous Back Alley Entrance. Room had a bunkbed...nothing else, no dresser,desk, chair,no curtains for privacy, no towels, pillow was flat like a comicbook, sheets too small for bed. Upper bed had dead bugs on it.
Booked for 3 nights, Ran out after 1night...Front Desk person Thursday at 500 PM was a Asshat. Rebooked at Hotel Stratford...Great service, Bang for your Buck...much safer.

Absolutely terrible, where do I start!
Before you even get in the building, the street it’s on is just nasty, surrounded by homeless and drug addicts pretty much folded in half! The owner was sleezy and very distasteful, the hallways smelt of urine and smoke, the kitchen was disgusting. The bedrooms were tiny and crammed in with 3 bunk beds and no privacy curtains. The only decent thing was the restrooms. I left after 3 hours and the owner refused to refund my second night as I didn’t expect the first night. STAY AWAY

Staff is super nice and helpful but I made wrong reservations as it’s for people younger than 30 years old and I do not read it … besides, I have to go to airport @ 6 am and circle out 8 am …. I learned to read instructions before I complete my booking … I cancelled and book new place and no refund from Expedia

I wasted money on booking a room for THREE ENTIRE NIGHTS because the booking process DOES NOT DISCLOSE WHEN BOOKING that it was a youth Hostel only and I wouldn’t be allowed to stay there. Nowhere in the booking process is this disclosed. And I wasn’t allowed to be refunded my money. So honestly this was the worst booking experience I’ve ever had. This review doesn't break any of the listed points on the Guidelines for Reviewing my experience so it should be allowed as it's in my right to freedom of speech this is an honest review of how this experience impacted my trip to San Fran. It was a disaster.

I had heard that this was a horrendous place, location and service, and facility and it was true. I had to book last minute for a friend who I could not put up at my place. We pulled up on bicycles 15 mins prior to the reservation time cancelation. We had to literally step over the passed out junkies on the street to ring the door. Finally someone opened the door, only to tell me that the reservation had been canceled because we \"no showed\". Yet we were there! After some argument, he finally started to agree IF we gave him the $20 deposit. I said whatever I didn't care I just wanted to stop the argument and get a key. He flipped out and started yelling at me and refused me entrance and kept yelling to contact \"Expedia\" since I booked on there. Like I was a second class citizen, yet this place doesn't even have their own booking engine! It was truly horrible, and another person left there as we pulled away telling how nasty the place was room maintenance and cleanliness wise.

The room had torn and stained linen. Two of the bathrooms were not in use. The two rhat were in use were dirty. The carpet on the stairs was sticky,, gross like it has never been washed. The handrails were also sticky. We could not wait to leave; unfortunately we had to wait until 9 a.m for the attendant to arrive to return our $20.00 deposit. I am so relieved we only booked one night. We killed a roach in our room. We slept in our clothe.

Los baños. Todo el tiempo sucios,no habia papel iguienico,el cuarto sucio,el internet no servia en el 4 pisosolo 2 baños para todos los otros baños fuera de servicio al salir se lo comente a la persona de front desk me dijo q era mentira q ya habia acabado mi estancia q me retirara de la propiedad el muy enojado muy mala actitud de esta persona. No recomiendo el hostel.

San Francisco is a beautiful city, but the area where this hostel is situated has a high number of homeless individuals in difficult situations. Not everyone will engage with you, but there are many unstable people around, which might not be ideal for a solo female traveler. The hostel's facilities are below average, but considering the price, it can serve as a reasonable emergency option just for a place to sleep. On the positive side, the staff is friendly.

The price was cheap but the front desk was rude. Nick tried everything to teach lessons to his customer. He mentioned Expedia did not pay him in time and I should have read his policies beforehand. That was the only line he can speak to a customer.

The hostel is doing a good job of renovating. The staff also take safety and security very seriously. Unfortunately, there is a lot of homeless people in the area. The building is older, but they have updated the bathrooms and added USB charging ports into the electric sockets.

Couldn’t cook without ants or mice on counter. More mice on the floor than outside. Door to outside doesn’t lock at night. Only 2 working bathrooms. Front desk is rarely available and if they are they go out of their way and I make you feel bad.

The front desk person was extremely rude, screamed at me, and demanded more money. He even threatened not to let me in. This all happened at 9 PM, and he knew we wouldn't be able to find another place to stay at that hour. That's the only way to explain his awful behavior.

I booked it thinking it was a hotel I couldn't get my money back so I left too many homeless on the streets no parking nasty outside but the guy who checked me in was real friendly and explained to me at the hostel I respect that from him other than that the outside with this nasty homeless everywhere I go on safe I wish I got my money back but like I told a man I'll just donate it to you thank you for the shower cuz it did take a shower

The services by Nick were impressive & courtesy. He showed me the alternative bus to airport & walked to show where the little bus stop is. I checked out early, and he was there to help. Facility is old & not so clean. No towel, mattress was old & thin. No bed bugs though.

I regret to report a highly disconcerting experience during my recent stay at the hostel. Originally, I accidentally double booked a \"Twin Room,\" which led to a misunderstanding regarding cancellations. Despite contacting Expedia to resolve the issue, the owner adamantly refused to authorize the cancellation, citing his purported lack of payment from Expedia. I accepted the non-refundable policy but was taken aback by his dismissive and discourteous response.

Moreover, upon booking a dorm room for an additional night, the owner's behavior escalated to outright hostility. He berated me for utilizing Expedia, demanding a substantially higher rate than online listings. His aggressive mannerisms and veiled threats of denying me further accommodation, coupled with my colleague's unwarranted denial of stay for expressing discomfort, left me feeling targeted and discriminated against.

The owner's unwelcoming attitude, paired with his penchant for aggression and discriminatory undertones, pointedly suggest a troubling pattern of mistreatment. This concerning behavior is further corroborated by similar reviews highlighting mistreatment of American guests, leading me to caution prospective guests, particularly African Americans, against patronizing this establishment.

I wish I would have read the reviews before I booked. Totally spaced it. This place is a absolute s*** hole. Everything is sticky and dirty the smell in the whole place is rancid. And I am almost positive there was a rat in my room one night. By far the worst hostel I've stayed in. The location is ok depending on what you're doing. But the homeless is a problem every where in the city so you can't complain about that. I would not recommend this place at all.

There are a group of homeless people just outside the hotel door. The road also doesn't seem safe. You can't even check out after 10PM. Their washroom is too dirty. And the private room has no amenities other than a bed. And even the bed sheet seems too dirty.

For the price it is pretty good. The staff was very friendly and helpful - always there if you had any questions or needed assistance. However, it was noisier and dirtier than I had expected. The staff was cleaning frequently but I think the people staying there long term were just a bit messy.

It was a bad experience I never got to check in because after I had booked the room they called me 15 minutes later and said I had to be there by 10:00 and there was no way of me making it there because I was still traveling so I was never able to use the room and I lost the money.
