If you want a classic old school in sf downtown, it s here. My room had classic marble fixtues with a serious commercial toilet. My room was brilliantly lit. The bed was firm just the way i love it. The staff are o polite and old school. The place alive with antiques. They dont have breakfast so who cares? Go to the donut place close by.

If you want to give all of your belongings over and be locked out of the hotel and your room until they are ready to let you in the barred and locked front door. I have never stayed in a hotel that’s asks for the hotel key back every time you leave the building. They also ask that you leave your valuables at the front desk. The camera system in this hotel with the main screen looks like this place is watching everything in the building for some reason and you should be aware of your surroundings. This place is shady!!! The building had a health and safety code posting that chemicals in the building were known to cause cancer. This is also near the Tenderloin District. The doors are barred and locked and you have to wait for someone to let you in. No one ever answers the phone so imagine standing outside in a bad neighborhood waiting for someone to come open the door whenever they decide to. If that’s for you, this is your place. Look at the pictures and tell me you would want to stay here

A charming vintage property with polite and helpful staff. Don’t come here if you all the bells and whistles of a corporate chain; come here if you want to go back in time 100 years and bathe in a claw foot tub and show your kids what a pay phone looks like. Don’t worry, sheets are new and clean, towels are replaced daily, and it’s a comfortable stay. That said, San Francisco has a large unhoused population, and this neighborhood isn’t immune.

My father and I stayed at the hotel for several days while visiting San Francisco. This hotel was a time capsule. We met the owner several times and he has done his best to keep the hotel in its original condition when it opened in 1912.

The hotel was clean, staff was friendly, and well managed. Outside the hotel was a bus stop and subway station.

If you are looking for a simple quaint hotel this fits the bill. Thanks

Badly designed hotel but cheap

Not a good hotel. It has an old rustic feel to it which is appealing. It’s also cheap. Right on market, so convenient location. Problem is it lacks a lot that even cheaper hotels have. It feels like they banked everything on location, and skipped a lot of hotel common sense.

The heat there is poor. They’re radiators, and one of ours didn’t work. It is also only on from 6pm - 6am. Very freezing in the Winter. There is no place to put your towel in the bathroom. So you exit wet into a cold room.

Think sinks are on the outside of the bathroom. The entire room is carpeted, so that seems like a very bad idea too. The elevator also doesn’t seem safe at all. It shakes when it hits the ground floor before the door opens.

The worst is, the front door is locked 24/7. So you can’t enter the building until the host comes and opens it for you. There is only one room key too. You have to turn it in each time you leave the building. So if you’re traveling with friends or spouse it can make things very tricky.

The hotel is unfortunately in the worst area I’ve ever seen with my own eyes, I didn’t know it was this bad. The homeless are openly taking substances and using the middle of the street for the bathroom. It’s a very scary experience, you can hear them from the hotel window all night long. The building itself is interesting and needs some serious renovation, there is some cool aspects to the hotel with some old school furniture and memorabilia. It does unfortunately have a bad smell throughout the building too. The tv in the room shows a very poor image like it was on a old school box tv, most channels are unwatchable due to how much static is on the screen. The bathroom is okay, but the shower head is non existent so it feels like a garden hose.
Lots of great stuff to do in San Francisco just as long as you stay away from the Tenderloin. It will just stain your visit, I’ll never forget how disturbing it was staying in this area.
Transport is pretty close to the hotel which is nice, but unfortunately you get crowds of homeless of up to 30 hanging around the bus stop outside. They can just be frozen like a zombie with barely any clothes.
The staff at this hotel were polite and always had a smile, even though the front door was locked we never had a problem getting back in. I do wish they mentioned about the coffee we could use, as we noticed that on checkout.
This is great for budget but you must be tough skinned, it’s not the owners fault or staff.
It was an experience.

I received face towels with holes in them; The bathrooms are small and cramped. Granted, the overall hotel appears very clean, but it does have an odd smell to it. Wifi is barely functional. I understand the policy behind not being allowed to leave with the room keys, but it's incredibly inconvenient, especially given the front desk is about 10 feet from the front door where they have to let you in; god forbid you to get attacked by a crackhead while waiting to be let in. Hotel room definitely did the trick for the night, but I wouldn't recommend staying longer than one night. Bathrooms are incredibly minimalist put nicely; There aren't even places to hang your towels. I may or may not have a concern about the bedding as I woke up with my legs covered in bug bites though I'm unsure if that was from the bedding or something else, but I don't remember having as many bites before going to bed. Again, overall does the trick if you're only looking for a place to stay for one night, placement of the hotel is nice as it was about 5 minutes to Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and is across the street from muni and BART. There are a lot of homeless people openly doing drugs on the street, but it's not a big deal if you don't bother them and just be aware of your surroundings. I don't think I'd return to this hotel again unless I was very cash-strapped and booking last minute.

The Aida Plaza is an Old-Style Traditional Hotel in the heart of Downtown San Francisco. That Area of Market has become increasingly scuzzy over recent years, and I know that many people are put off by the numbers of homeless people near to the entrance (although none came near to the actual hotel entrance during my week there). Once you put that out of your mind, the Aida is a good basic option for the city - and very good for the price that I paid! The room was large, very clean, and the bathroom, lights, tv etc all worked perfectly. The room that I was in (505) was quiet and I got good night's sleep. The internet was easy to connect to and fast. The staff were friendly, and quickly got to know my room number (you hand your key to them when exiting the hotel). They must have a hard job as they have to open the front door for each guest entering (the front door is kept locked). I had no difficulty gaining entry to the Hotel no matter what time I arrived back after a day/night out. Bad points - no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms, which would be a plus, or room service, but I wasn't expecting this. I also liked the \"faded glory\" and overall feel of the communal areas. The lift/elevator also worked throughout my stay. Overall, i was pleasantly surprised.

The hotel is very nice. Front desk is friendly and room is nice. My only complaint is more about outside. Market street is super loud at night so it’s hard to sleep. Parking is also kinda hard so be prepared to move your car or possibly park in a garage.

Aida Plaza feels like a family run facility. The rooms are older, but it's clean, safe, and absolutely charming. So much character in the building, I loved and the convenience of being close to two BART stations and walking distance from the Moscone Center. There are plenty of restaurants and a Whole Food a block away, so you've got options when it comes to eating.

Review of the Aida Hotel

If you like nostalgia this is a great place to stay. Build in 1912 it is quite a place. Its old yes, but clean and affordable. I like the downtown area with all its character. I would recommend it. Its in walking distance to all the districts with public transportation near by.

Well, the hotel is old. Very old. The ambiance is of the Soviet Union hotel of the 1960s, It is on the edge of San Francisco's Tenderloin, the roughest neighborhood. Drug deals across the street can be observed from your window. The hotel door is closed for the night, so if you are not walking around at night it is safe. The personnel is friendly and helpful, and I wish them more business, but this is not a place for a romantic trip. It was OK for a business trip though.

The rooms are very small. Everything is very old. The chest of drawers was missing knobs, so only one drawer could be used. No desk in the room. The linen, however, was clean. There was a very heavy odor in the corridors and rooms, possibly from the old broadloom. Internet in the room worked OK. View from the window was a brick wall. Only one old elevator. Often had to wait for a considerable time for it. Free breakfast consisted of a donut and coffee served at the front counter. Staff was pleasant and agreeable. On the plus side, this hotel is in a very central location. I was able to walk to most places where I wanted to go. Lots of beggers on the street.

Everything was terrible. It was filthy. The policy said room can accomodate 2 adults but no they charged me additional 35 USD per night for a 2nd person. They make their own crappy rules. You need to leave the room key with them every single time you head out. The elevator won't open unless you make them believe it is inseed you who is staying. They make stupid ways and allegations to mint more money out of your pocket. The free breakfast is a couple of disgusting doughnuts. Super unfriendly. The worst possible there is.

This was the cheapest available property that we could find that actually featured a private room ANd a private bathroom in SF. We found out after it was too late and we were already there that there was a very good reason for that: The place is surrounded by 3 homeless shelters, there is lots of drug pushing and usage taking place on the street and for blocks around this property, and the windows/walls are paper thin so you can hear the street dwellers yelling at eachother all night long and the steady stream of sirens (including the early morning wake up call to the people passed out on the sidewalk)

This hotel is in an excellent position. Tram F stops out the front to take you to Fisherman’s wharf and pier 39. The Golden Gate Bridge is also accessible via tram/bus 49 & 28. There is a convenience store on the corner which is helpful as well as the underground railway system. Please note that SF has a large homeless population inhabiting the streets. This may make some people feel unsafe. The hotel itself is dated but has a quaint charm reminiscent of a bygone era with the wood paneling and 1940s music echoing through the foyer. The rooms are nothing flash but the shared bathrooms were always cleaned. Coffee is available 24/7 in the lobby and doughnuts are available for breakfast. The staff are pleasant and Romeo always greeted us with a smile. We enjoyed our stay. Thank you 😊

I liked that it wasn't far from the venue I was attending.
What I didn't like was the location and the way we have to give our room key to the front desk when we leave our room. Not check out but just leave for a few hours. And it was kinda creepy, but it was affordable and the fact I didn't die it wasn't that bad. The staff was pretty friendly I must say. I appreciated the way they made us laugh.

Good location, decent place & good value for money

Amazing location. I chose this place for proximity to most of my events and reasonable price. The rooms and the carpets feel very old fashioned and the neighbourhood has a number of homeless people on the streets. However, I didn't face any untoward incident during my four days of stay. The hotel does offer free breakfast consisting of coffee/tea and a doughnut.

The hotel is budget-friendly and was close enough to all the places we needed to travel to.

You have to leave your key with front desk whenever you go out and the staff don't check your ID when you get your key back - you just need to tell them your room number which feels precarious.

The wifi was terrible. Luckily we were attending a conference and had access to wifi at the convention center. I had to tether my laptop to my phone back in the hotel room. I recommend getting a hotspot if you're going to stay here if you don't have unlimited data.

We also had a very uncomfortable encounter with one of the staff who has no idea how to talk to persons of color.

Upon check in the front desk, which a small junky desk didn't have my pre-paid reservation. He told me to email the reservation to him, but his internet was down. He continued to assist other guest ignoring me. I told him I made the reservation through Expedia and he said I needed to pay for the room now, Expedia is only a confirmation. I had to call Expedia directly to make the front desk check me in and not charge me extra. The hotel itself is outdated and run down. There was no heating in the room with the weather being 47 degrees outside. Every time I had to leave the hotel I had to turn the hotel key into the front desk and pick it up upon my return. It was very uncomfortable in the room and noisy outside I couldn't sleep so I checked out at 4am and went to the airport to feel more comfortable, get some rest, and be safe.

I can only surmise that most bad reviews come from people who assume \"All hotels must have x, so I'll save a few bucks and get this one!\" then arrive to find that x was invented after this hotel was built. This hotel is fairly close to as it was, and has been worn since its construction in 1912, save for minimal updates, only as necessary. The original plaster has been painted several times. Fixtures are functional, not an amenity. Floors are thin, R-value is not a concept.

Simply put, this hotel should be CRAWLING with hipsters. Frustrated thirty somethings on weekly rates banging away on mechanical typewriters, honeymooning couples of indeterminable and irrelevant gender enjoying fresh donuts and coffee with rock bands who want that perfect publicity photo. Honeymooning spouse A wants to join in and get a shot on their Holga.

Considering the price of rent in the middle of the city, paying the nightly rate for this place might be a genuine, viable alternative for those of means who listen to \"Common People\" and love it but don't have a clue what it's about.

Instead of being concerned with the s'posed ta's of what a hotel should or shouldn't have, open the window, listen to the rain, or the sounds of the city. Draw a picture, write a poem, just sit and think about all the history that's come and gone that this little old hotel has been around to experience.

*Full disclosure, I wanted my own bathroom so I paid for a room with its own bathroom.

The hotel itself is great – simple and old-fashioned, but perfectly functional. Staff (both of them who I met) were friendly and helpful. The area is a little more sketchy, as Mid-Market does have a lot of homeless people on the street. However, they generally leave everyone alone, and I didn't have any trouble in the area at all. Other than that, the location is great, with lots of good bars and restaurants in easy walk, as well as the Civic Center BART station being outside the hotel's front door.

For the price, you'll be pressed to find something better in San Francisco.

This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. I paid 120 a night but I should have just gotten a better hotel. Where do I start, the hotel has no A.C at all or fans so sleeping was very difficult. The elevator is small and clearly needs repairs, the hotel looks like it's from the 30's. Oh I forgot to mention that you are not allowed to leave with your room key you have to drop it off at the front desk anytime you leave the hotel. The room key is an actual key not an electronic card. There were multiple mosquitos in my room as well as the hotel. At night the hotel actually locks the door so if you come back to your room after 9 you have to bang on the door so they can hear you. There is no shower or toilet in your room you have to share that, oh there is also a timer on the shower so there's that too. The owners barely speak English so communicating was difficult and they were very rude, the lady at the front desk told me I can go elsewhere if I didn't like it there when I just asked for a fan for my room because its 90 degrees outside. Their breakfast is only donuts and tea and the donuts are stale, just do yourself a favor and spend the extra cash to get a better hotel. you have been warned!

Don't let the exterior of this building or the dicey neighborhood fool you: this is a pretty decent hotel, and a good value considering hotel prices in San Francisco! It's basic, clean, and I found the staff to be friendly. It's not the Ritz, but if you are coming to San Francisco on a budget and don't plan on spending a lot of time in your hotel, then this is a good deal. Civic Center train station is one minute away.

Definitely not worth 200 dollar a night

A lot of homeless people close to the hotel. The heating system is old and outdated and made so much noise that it was almost impossible to sleep. They said they have coffee and donuts but they were always out when we tried to get some. The wifi never worked. We paid 200 a night for a double. I wouldn't pay 100 for this place. The staff was friendly but that was the only nice thing about this place.

Omg..if u want drama do not go here! We had a room for 2 but needed to make it 4 ( the option was on line?) but the mean man said no, only 3 and the 3rd can be only a guest for $30, no other guests were allowed in the room, really? So my friends had to hold their bladders until next stop? We also found out the key had to be turned into the mgr every time we left the hotel? CRAZYIEST hotel I’ve ever stayed in..PASS if u want any privacy, his glass cage overlooks everything..dude, u need a snickers bar! Stayed at the European hostel instead, Vicki there was awesome!

Cheap & Clean

Spent 9 days here while in town for a conference. After reading some of the reviews here I decided to give it a go, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The rooms and shared bathroom were clean, and adequate.

I would stay here again.

This hotel is in a terrible area - full of homeless panhandlers, and folks shooting up. I only stayed here because better hotels tripled their usual rates during the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference. That said, I'll never stay here again because it was so cold - I'm sure the room was in the 50's, with no way to turn on//raise the heat. There's really NOTHING to recommend it, accept the price - but it's not worth getting sick due to the freezing room temperature.

On line booking with expedia

On line reservations with Expedia says you get free continental breakfast so I booked for four nights but was surprised that no breakfast at all instead you get open box of donuts that wouldn't touch so dissaponting

looking for something super cheap here it is...

I knew that I was hoping to a hostel but the beds were super uncomfortable I was not very happy with that, the restrooms were way too small to try and fit in, the shower was a joke they should know doors should open outwards not in words towards you when you're trying to get out of the shower and you don't want to step back in to try and get out, if you try and bring someone over there going to charge you $30 as a nonrefundable visitors today so if you're bringing somebody over for whatever they're going to charge you for it unless they stay in the lobby I didn't really like that at all you pay for a hotel that's your room you can do with it what you believe, it was cheap and fair that's why I chose it I knew I wasn't going to a three star hotel I know I was going to a two star or below

Dissappointing Stay

No towel bars in the bathroom, shower stall was so shallow it couldn't contain the run off water that half of ended up on the bathroom floor, the bathroom exhaust fan was so loud it sounded like a plane taking off. The cable TV they provide was out of service and the local stations reception was so poor they weren't worth looking at. There was scaffolding blocking any light from the window. I was on the 5th floor and found the elevator not working 25% of the time. The hotel charges $30 for any guest which I believe is illegal but oh well. The only positive things were the front desk staff was very friendly and the bed and sheets were decent.

Most horrible place to stay

Aida hotel is a terrible place to stay. Everything is shabby, dirty and smelly . The rooms have no air conditioning . I was grilling in my bed when the temperature was in the 100s in August
The neighborhood was also too noisy even at night's and you cannot sleep even a blink of an eye. Never stay at this place if you want to enjoy your trip .

The hotel is old and has the charm & deficiences associated with that. It was comfortable , clean and staff were helpful The major downside was its position. Handy for all transport & galleries at night the neighbourhood was full of homeless people. They were not aggressive but it was not a pleasant environment for a solo traveller.

Nice hotel near the metro station.

The hotel is near the metro and bus station, you can take the Bart at the airport and stay at Civic Center, cross the 7th street and you place is at your right. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The rooms are outdated but confortable. The breakfast is donuts, they are good, especially the chocolate, coconut and cinnamon roll, there's coffee and tea all day. The internet is a little slow but i was on the 4th floor and works ok in my room. Avoid walking on the market street after 9:00pm. Use uber or lyft.

Cheap central hotel in San Fracisco

There are lots of good things and some poor things. It was right across from a subway stop coming from the airport. It was Gay Pride week so there was lots of neat stuff in the City Hall Square. To get on a Hop-On-Hop-Off we had to walk about 3 blocks up to Union Square. During the day it was okay. At night it was crawling with street people. The bed was very comfortable. No air conditioning even though it said we were to have it. We opened the window but street noises rose 6 floors! In all it was VERY simple including the included breakfast! --Coffee or tea and doughnuts. There was a drugstore very close that had everything we needed for breakfast in our room. No fridge but they have one in the office for us to use. For Frisco it was cheap. We only slept there. We had full days in Frisco so didn't get back till late evening. I would actually stay there again because it filled our needs.

The hotel staff were great and really gave a sense of enthusiasm to make sure your stay was good. The local area was not good and it seems quite dangerous to walk around by yourself at night. The WIFI was also appalling could not get any wifi in my room and had to sit in the hallway to get it.

Fine for literally just sleeping.

It's location in city is good but the area is full of bums. Hotel was fine for what we needed, just one night to sleep. Nothing special but truly nothing wrong. No bathroom in room stinks and no parking is an issue. Hotel workers were very friendly and caring.

Found garbage under beds, rooms needs update, area okay and central, very old hotel reflected throughout. Bathroom split into 3 parts, toilet and showers common spaces. Not clean and noisy, even inside the hotel.

Regret to choose this hotel. Need pest control!

Made a mistake of choosing this hotel. Location surrounded by homeless, addictor, etc... Even in the afternoon you don't want to go out alone. two friend's room fund bed bugs, lucky me didn't find it in my room I think it's because my room is facing west, horrible hot in the afternoon and you cannot turn off the heat by yourself... what an experience!

Bed bug, avoid.

First night too tired, didn't pay attention the those bugs.Second day found alive bug (first time in life see those bugs and didn't know what is that... Thank this hotel taught me what is bed bug.) and already find something like mosquito bite on my body but didn't know it's bed bug. After 3 days stay there checked out and find my body is bitten everywhere. what a horrible experience!

You Get What You Pay For

Well first off the Aida Hotel advertises they provide cable TV and air conditioning in every room. Mine had neither. The hotel didn't provide daily maid service the three days I was there. The neighborhood was excessively noisy due to a building going up right next door. The walls were thin enough that I could hear a couple next door making live at 8AM. But, considering the cost was $81 a night you get what you pay for.

Budget lodging

Good if you are on a budget and only need a place to stay. Rooms are tiny and dated. I recommend ear plugs as you are right next to Market st. where a lot of homeless ppl are. They tend to shout and have fights during the night, not to mention the constant police sirens that run by.

Also, front desk wants you to always give them your keys when leaving so they can foist the visitor's fee onto your bill if you bring anyone else inside. Which is inconvenient af if you are going out to the nearby CVS for 5 minutes or so. Why make the whole ordeal 20 minutes long when I am only going out for 5 min??

Value for Money and logistically convenient.

It's value for money. We made a choice to stay next to BART station as well as a MUNI bus stop, well, we sure were very satisfied with the logistics. It was just a few steps away. Imagine dragging in 5 suitcases from the BART train and only having made a few steps to the hotel was a huge relief.
The staff at the hotel were very receptive to our needs and quite friendly. Good hospitality.
Nothing to shout about for breakfast but then again we were prepared for just donuts and coffee/tea. All within our expectations.
The room with the private was ok. The TV reception was not that good but we were in San Francisco not to watch TV but to shop and visit.
Even though there were some construction going on outside our window, it was kinda our morning wake up call.
Being a Muslim, what mattered most was the the hotel was just 30 steps away from a mosque and almost 10 halal restaurants which was on Jones Street.
And being Asian, there was a Chinese restaurant next to the hotel. Our dinners was mainly around the hotel.
