For the rate that this hotel charge (walk in rate was RM800) the hotel could do better in the following areas:
1. Wifi connection kept cutting off
2. Limited TV channel options. Poor TV resolution
3. Algae in the perimeter drain of the lap pool
4. Leaking plumbing fixtures in bathtub and at the valve to the toilet
5. Not up to 5 star hotel cleanliness
6. Air conditioner was out at their Strikers Bowl but luckily the first game (the only game we played was complimentary). Had to switch to different lanes several times because of malfunctions.

Pros:
1. Staff was excellent and courteous
2. Breakfast options were excellent
3. Experience at Mandara Spa was excellent

Overall it was a good stay however I extended my stay for another night and the walk-in rate was RM800 or about USD200. For USD200, I expect the best from this hotel but the stay was not worth this rate. Wifi connection kept cutting off, the plumbing fixtures leak in the bath tub and to the toilet washlet. Lap pool could had algae on the drain along the perimeter of the pool. Staff however was really great. Breakfast food was great.

Very family oriented resort! Close to the Imago mall but it’s not walking distance. You can grab and go to everywhere very easily. There was no hair dryer in the room so I had to ask for one. Breakfast buffet was very superb with various options from Malaysian food to Korean.

Some furniture a little aged. Bathtub stopper doesn’t work. WiFi is the absolute worst of any 5star hotel I’ve ever been in. Keeps kicking u out every time you closed the phone. Have to relog in EVERY time you turn on the phone. Cell signals sucks so u are reliant on the wifi.

But overall great value for such a large oceanfront suite. Location cannot be beat. Amenity is awesome and views are great.

Just back from 2 weeks there. Overall pretty good, but some areas are tired. Some rooms have been refreshed but ours wasn’t one of them.
Pool area needs more beds.
Breakfast a little repetitive.
Bar music needs more variety. Same cd every day for many days.

Check in at reception was easy and trouble free. Rooms are clean and fantastic views of the sea but the hotel is showing it's age with rooms' decor old and tired, and loose decking on balconies and in public areas. We especially booked this hotel as it had so many dining venues and bars, but upon arriving and settling in learned that 2 of the restaurants had closed and the swim up bar closed during covid and have not been reopened. Their website should have been updated with this information as it leaves zero beverage service around the pool. They have a fantastic Sunset Bar/lounge which was could be used the first 3 nights we were there with gorgeous views of the sun setting over islands and the sea, it rained once and all the cushions were removed from the furniture and were not returned for the rest of our 11 night stay, not 5star service and disappointing to say the least. Food service was good and staff friendly but clearly need more training in the drinks service area which was virtually non existant, always had to chase someone to get a drink. Around the pool and Sunset Bar, again, had to repeatedly chase a server and on most occasions go up to the small bar, order and pay as they would not run a tab, and drinks would then be delivered. We tried the swim up bar at the sister resort, Pacific Sutera, and although there were only 2 couples sat there we still had to wave down the 5 staff there to get a drink, again much training is needed.

Poor, outdated property. No hot water. When complained, manager and staff told me that they’re at full capacity so the hot water can’t reach my room. Does that even make sense?!?! If your hotel can’t provide facilities to a full capacity, then don’t sell that many rooms and take money from people. They were also not honest and up front about it at check in.

Very disappointing and not living to the promise..

We spent 3 nights here and were disappointed too many times for a 5 star resort.
Facilities are fine but quite dated, certainly not what I would expect. But that's not a problem except there was no warm water on the first 1.5 days.
The staff however lacks very much on every front.
Breakfast starts at 6 am, 30 min later still no one at the egg station. I asked the staff, asked again some 7 min later. 20 min later I give up.
We have a set dinner every night. We are told (twice) this will be the same menu every night but we can change the main course only the following nights. Only the last night we learn that there are 3 or 4 different set menus, great, just surprising that we did not learn that the first 2 nights.
I want to add drinks (ca 10 USD) to the room no. to settle at check-out. Not possible because I did not leave a deposit at check-in (I would if someone even asked about it).
Last night we order a sparkling water and a piña colada. To avoid a misunderstanding I show it in the menu. 5 min later the waiter comes back, she does not know what I wanted. I show each item again in the menu. After a while she comes back (still no water) and says we cannot order piña colada. I want to choose another cocktail but she tells me I cannot order any, only water. Later I find out that I could have ordered any cocktail I wanted (also piña colada).
Concierge would not take our postcards for sending, sent us to town.
On a good side: the surrounding area is very nice.

What has happened to Magellan?

We were made to wait for nearly 40mins to be checked in. Check-in service is so slow motion, it's not acceptable. Staff were friendly, but not well trained at all. Ordered a bottle of wine, but the wine still served even though the bottle had leaked wine leak mark on it's side. Swimming pool was not cleaned as should be with wet wipes found inside the pool. mattress was old and badly sprung, which was covered over by thick bed underlay. Maintenance of the property is obviosly lacking.

Had a great time here...apart from the whistle blowing life guards. I felt they were a bit over the top. I also had an allergic reaction to jelly fish larvae bites(jelly bugs) that I got on a snorkeling trip booked through the hotel. The guide advised there were stingers but I reacted badly. The hotel did not know what was wrong and recommended going to the hospital. We were flying to Sandakan so I was unable to do this. In Sandakan I went to the doctors and was advised it was chicken pox. It was only at the lovely Turtle Island that the life guard put vinegar on my bites which were on my legs and arms and torso. they were all blistered and incredibly itchy. He was outraged that the snorkel guide in KK had not advised me to do this. So my one issue with the hotel is that they did not recognize what this could have been. I did mention the bites while snorkeling.

The Magellan is a great option for families in a short holiday in KK. We stayed for 3 nights and we’re pleased. Rooms were spacious and clean, balcony had a good view. The hotel is very quiet at night and has beautiful views wherever you go. Sunset is magic! Loved the restaurant/bar area. The Italian restaurant is a must go. Just two improvements: food service is incredibily slow (all restaurants) and the kids club staff energy is quite low comparing to kids energy. 😉

Hotel room was big and clean, however the bathroom shower is broken and cant control the temperature of the water. My 2 years old girl was mild scalded by the hot water. Food tag at breakfast restaurant is wrong, staff simply put the tag. we order 1 hard boiled was took 30 mins to serve us. Hotel is ok but too expensive and not worth with this price. Quite disappointed to stay there.

Overall we had a pleasant stay, although we do not know how the other hotels at KK are like. Staffs were really friendly and helpful.

Kids enjoyed the pool with the water slides and sea view was fantastic. The hotel’s beach is very small but there’s a boat departing to the Islands so you can enjoy the beach there.

Room was also clean and showers worked fine. The bath tub was quite nice.

Breakfast was OK with varieties of Local food and Western food. Could been better if there were freshly squeezed juices.

Location is convient, just about 15 minutes far from the Airport.
Also essy Access to the city too.

Rundown and poor maintenance

The hotel is located in a great location with beautiful views. The staff are friendly and helpful, too. Unfortunately, the hotel has aged over the years and has probably been poorly maintained. The louvre windows of the bathroom connecting the bedroom is broken. A lot of the sockets in the bathroom and the bedroom are not working and quite a few lights did not work, too. The sink drainage was really slow and you can see poor workmanship of some repairs done to the sink itself.

Renovation and maintenance need to be done sooner to save this beautiful resort!

A beautiful place to relax

We stayed at the Magellan for two nights, at the end of our holidays in Borneo. Hotel is absolutely amazing - from the rooms (we got a free suite upgrade -yay!), to the hotel grounds and the pools - fantastic. The hotel is huge and even though there seemed to be a lot of guests (judging by the busy breakfast room), there was plenty of space and free loungers by the pool at any time of day. Wonderful sunsets!

Spa experience was great and the free drinks and snacks at the members' lounge every evening a great bonus (lounge came with the free upgrade). There was one particular staff member at the lounge whose attitude could be improved - not entirely rude but slightly arrogant attitude, no smile at all...I would have expected more from a 5* service. The rest of the staff were very pleasant.

Food at breakfast was ok. Large selection of foods but a lot of staff ran out when we had a late breakfast one morning. The egg station was a bit slow. We dined at the Al Fresco restaurant multiple times and really enjoyed the food however, service was also a little bit lacking - on two occasions customers who ordered after us received their food first, on one occasion our order was confused - wrong food arrived/some food was forgotten. The staff apologized profusely and offered free drink and dessert. Hats off to the manage (Buonaventura?) who did a great job rectifying the situation.

Overall a lovely stay at an amazing hotel to which I would definitely return and recommend to others.

This hotel is more epensive then we usually go to when travelling but with a last night in kota after over two weeks of all kinds of adventures, all over borneo, we decided to splurge. The hotel and rooms are very nice and it was the perfect place to spend one day relaxing by the pool. You actually get use of this hotel and the other large suterra hotel as well. There was lots of families there, felt guilty being there without my kids. The only improvement to make would be the food. They get much more asian clientel so they buffet breakfast is very catered to them. Also had dinner here, not amazing but expensive.

Did not expect this great holiday. A great resort with other resorts linked all in one nice walk on the promenade.

there is a lot of activities the for kids bowling, kiddie, lots of pools, kids parks, pool tablet, and for the adults golf great bars and food. My one year old boy loved it. U can also take a trip to the island not long boat ride from the pier at the resort goes every half past and returns on the hour.

the islands are really nice and snorkelling to see Nemo & dory is a breeze as its a couple of meters off the beach. one thing though you will see a lot of rubbish on your way over but not at the pier as this is cleaned it gets taken by the sea from somewhere.

Everyone is very helpful to you. Food was lovely good price but drink is expensive in Malaysia everywhere great happy hours 7-9am then its 10MYR per tiger thats 3.30 bucks a beer wine 15 mYR. the free internet wasn't bad manage to get Netflix to working in the room on wifi. just remember to log on when you move to different areas.

best thing ill miss will be the curtains being closed and chocolates on the bed each night :)

Great view of the sea and excellent Malaysian hospitality by the staff. There were very large tour groups from China which thronged the breakfast rooms so that was the only noisy part of the stay. Everything else was nice and quiet.

Staying at the Magella Sutera Resort (14 nights) was the highlight of our trip. We stayed in a Deluxe Sea Facing Room which we highly recommend. The room is spacious, neat and clean and it has a beautiful, uniquely designed bathroom which we loved. Sunsets from out balcony were a sight to see.

The Magellan has a shuttle service for a small fee which leaves at 10am, 2pm, 4pm and 8pm from the hotel to the KK Town. It stops at the Imago Mall (an upper class shopping Centre), the KK Waterfront (a short walk to the Centrepoint Shopping Centre) and Wisma Merdeka (where the best Money Changers are). Patrons of the hotel can board the shuttle for free on the return journey back from town but make sure you are at the respective stop 15 min early as you don't want to miss it.

Within the Sutera Harbour Resort, there is a free Shuttle that will take you anywhere within the Sutera Harbour.

We used the Magellan's Shuttle Service often.

We were welcomed with open arms at the Magellan Sutera. All the Staff are friendly and extremely helpful.

Also on Saturday at 6.45pm there is a short Traditional Dance Show in the foyer and later a Fire Eating Performance at the poolside which no one should miss.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at this hotel and recommend it over the Pacific Sutera .

Highly recommended by us.

Fantastic, I would like to stay there again.

I had a wonderful memory of the room we stayed for three days in the resort which has the sea view. Whenever I woke up, I went to the balcony to see the sky and sea which were so blue to make me happy. The view was excellent both in day and night. I cannot forget the sunset I saw there. Also the bathroom was excellent; especially its bath and shower head were very comfortable.
The resort has various large pools.
The food was good, though some glasses smelled dirty dish clothes.
I fully enjoyed my stays there.

i arrived there no one picked up our baggages. During checkin nothing explained even the location of breakfast. they just hand overed a key. that was all. room was small and smelled. No view at all if you go to garden view. it is not a garden. No door between toilet and bath room. you can hear everyting from the toilet.

Great resort for relaxation, food just okay

The stay itself was very comfortable. Like a lot of hotels, food offered within the resort was not so great but very pricey. The pool was great, the room was spacious and cleaned regularly. The view from our room was beautiful. We had a sea view room on the 5th floor. We were initially placed on the 2nd floor but the view was barely of the sea but of the other hotel rooms so we asked to be moved to a better room, which they assisted with. Wi-fi was weak.

Overpriced, NO value for money, run-down hotel

Not value for money. Perhaps it is because the rates were discounted, the room given to me was rundown... chipped wooden panelings and stains on the bed-sheets. The aircond duct was so disgusting, green stuff was growing around the metal frames. The extra bed had stones in them and the towels were frayed at the sides and very thin. Not the fluffy hotel towel standards. The pool and beach was mediocre. And only one lift to service the entire harbor side. A real test of patience. I regret the money i spent at Magellan coz i think for the same amount i would have gotten a better stay closer to the city.

The management of the hotel and resort really has made sure their staff are well trained and friendly as everyone from the reception, the concierge, the cleaners, waiters were amazing. My children enjoyed the daily activities in and around the hotel and the spa is well recommended!

The room are old. Bathroom leaking, bathtub stained and etc. Staffs are poorly trained and rude. Extremely bad service for a 5 star rated hotel. Messed up both during checked in and checked out. Took them more then 30mins to resolve my check in and didn't even apologies.

Not to it's expectation, yet worth visiting

I saw a review that it's one of the best hotel to enjoy kota kinabalu. Location was excellent as it was only 10mins away from the airport, and had a travel agent counter right next to it for island hopping. Rooms and facilities were above expectation from my other experiences Malaysia. However, the hotel staffs were very slow with everything. We stayed at club room, but evening cocktail tray was only served 15~20minutes after we were seated, the bar at the lobby floor also took nearly 30minutes to serve our first drink.
Worst was the beach bar, they took more than 30mins to give us two cocktails. I understand if the place was crowded, however, I saw dozens of empty seats, dozens of staffs standing, but never bother to attend to guests.

on outskirts of city; cab is required to go anywhere, altho at 15rm they are relatively cheap. happy hours are in effects, however they do not provide the reqular alcohol but rather a cheaper variety; for a hotel that charges 650rm daily as a minimum, this is being cheap. also, the gym is not part of the hotel but rather a good 300 meters from the hotel, as there are two hotels on the property that share the facility. breakfast is fine, as long as you get there by 8am; any later than 9am and there is little left and breakfast runs until 1030.
