Kitchen facility is inadequate for the size of hostel and number of people wanting to use it. It is accessed through getting a key and is a small galley kitchen- suitable for one family/person to cook at a time but when I used it, 3 other groups also wanted to do so. It is not possible to pop in and get something into the fridge or cook and then do you dishes later (freeing it up for someone else to use it while you eat) as you have to pay a deposit to get the key. Freindly enough staff.

In der Zimmerbeschreibung stand „privates Badezimmer“ welches aber nicht in direkter Anbindung zum Zimmer sondern in einem Vorraum aufzufinden war. Von außen nicht abschließbar was es dem Zimmernachbarn welcher den selben Vorraum nutze ermöglicht hat dieses Badezimmer auch zu nutzen. Auf Nachfrage meinte das Personal das ja jeder weiß wem welches Bad gehöre und dann auch dementsprechend dieses nutzen sollte. Was in unserem Fall leider nicht funktioniert hat. Also bestanden wir auf ein neues Zimmer. Dieses hatte dann ein Bad direkt im Zimmer. Leider war dies so elendig dreckig, das wir uns erneut beschwert haben. Das Personal von der Rezeption entschuldigte sich und bemühte sich sehr, was auch das einzig positive an dem ganzen Hotel war.
Ich bin mit wenig Erwartungen ins Hotel gegangen und trotzdem wurde ich enttäuscht. Ein billiges Hotel sollte nicht unhygienisch heißen.

Elevator was not working. Bathrooms were not working. Coffee machines were not working. Check-in was a hassle. I complained to reception on several occasions to fix the bathroom but it wasn’t taken care of the entire floor smelled like poop. The entire staff was rude and not helpful except for Basem and the Kind Indian girl at the reception. My stay was very unsanitary and I would never stay here again. I request a refund.

I know it’s about budget hotel/hostel but it’s a bit of a ride from the city center. For those of you don’t mind take the bus or public transportation, it’s good. But I’d never come stay here again. I just didn’t realize it’s not convenient riding on bus and train. There’s a lot of road construction. Traffic isn’t that good. The property is located at a outskirt with loads of residential areas. Lots of immigrants. The staff is also short at times in the front desk. I didn’t have a good experience checking in. I have an Asian look but I’m an American so that front desk manager wasn’t so nice to accommodate my check in. He just said I had to do a self check in and really didn’t sound polite or friendly.

We went to stay, not knowing the set up was more like a hostel than hotel. Once we finally registered and paid, we went up to our room in a rickety elevator that had graffiti on the outside near the up/down buttons. The hallway was littered with garbage. We arrived at our room and discovered scuffs on the wall, a window so drafty the curtains were moving while the window was shut, and our TV screen was broken. Also, the restroom was outside our room (we assumed was a shared restroom with the room next to us, but it’s just not INSIDE the room). Complained to the staff that we weren’t going to stay on the property due to the conditions. They offered us a different room, but we declined. We did not stay more than 10 minutes, provided name and email address. Ended up staying elsewhere. Called Expedia and the original hotel/hostel refused to reimburse us due to their offering us a different room. Worst hotel experience. Thankfully we have travel insurance so we may have to file a claim to get our $400 back.

This place was one of the most unpleasant places I have ever stayed at. To begin with, we checked into our room which had not been cleaned from the previous occupants. Then after they switched our rooms, they ran out of towels, linen and key cards so we had to share 2 of each between 6. The paid buffet breakfast is atrocious and has no hot food. The staff are about as useless as an ashtray on a motorbike. And finally it’s in a very dodgy area. Couldn’t discourage people further from staying here.

You book a private room with bathroom but bathroom isn’t in your room it’s on the outside in a shared space with another room so be mindful about that when booking & room and bathroom smelt like cigarettes even though we booked a non smoking room.

We had to walk out of the room to get to the bathroom. No parking even though it says they do. Breakfast was not good for the price. Room was extremely HOT!! The elevator only goes up to the 7th floor and then you have to take stairs to get to the 8th floor which was not convenient having to carry the luggages and stroller up and down the stairs. Also elevators are tiny and all full of graffiti.

Wir würden in das A&O Berlin Mitte umgebucht.

Das A&O Hostel ist ein Hostel für wirklich wenig Geld und das sollte man hier nicht vergessen. Wenn das ein Hotel mit vier Sternen wäre würde die Bewertung anders ausfallen. Es ist relativ laut, da es hellhörig ist. In den Zimmer findet man Haare und Staub, dennoch ist es relativ sauber. Die Lage ist gut und die Leute an der Rezeption sind gestresst aber bemüht.

Wonderful reception desk personnel! We declined housekeeping when we checked-in & were comped 2 drinks -we chose the beer :) The bldg has been totally reno'd since our last stay. The reserved parking is reasonably priced, but free, local street parking wasn't too hard to find. This is a dog-friendly hotel. We always stay in a private room & were lucky to get an upgrade again; this time to the roomier 'family room.' The nicest aspect of this location is the BIG mix of clients. Families, E. Euro basketball team, senior couples, Italian marching band etc.

Clean, but strange room design

The door situation was weird. You enter through one locked door, whereupon you find yourself in a room with four more doors: one each for two separate rooms and their respective bathrooms. Each room nominally has a private bathroom, but you have to pass through the shared antechamber to reach it. The weirdest part is that the building was clearly designed in traditional hotel style with each room having its own direct door to the hallway and a fully private bathroom. The antechamber is some sort of bizarre modification. It would also have been nice if the room had a fan. Finally, it's worth noting that our room appeared to be acting as a storage unit for spare bunk beds.

My stay at a&o Berlin Kolumbus hotel

My stay in this hotel was good. Once I was checked in, I did not experience any problems. I'm still staying at this hotel, and so far I have no any problem. In the beginning the bed was not comfortable, but after a couple of nights I forgot about it. This means that is not that bad. The shower is small and sometimes the water could go to all over the place in the bathroom, so I'd to take shower carefully so I don't have to wipe/mop the floor afterward. Overall it was not a bad room for me. Thanks.

Basic but absolutely fine hotel/hostel

Was a little bit dubious about staying here as I am over 60 years old and travelling with my 21 year old daughter. However I was pleasantly surprised! I certainly wasn't the only person there my age and yes, most of the travellers were younger and at times it was noisy- especially when a large school party turned up-but it IS a hostel and so was completely acceptable. The staff were helpful and friendly, the rooms were clean and well equipped and the breakfast (7 euros extra) was plentiful. It is a bit far out from the centre but we knew that when we booked and the rail/tram/bus system in Berlin is brilliant and cheap (totally unlike over here!!) All in all I enjoyed my stay there and am now far more likely to consider a hostel for an inexpensive break. Berlin was great and I came back absolutely exhausted but having seen everything I wanted to.

Good value hotel for travellers and families

We are a family of three and stayed in a room by ourselves with bunk beds, single beds and our own bathroom, TV and wifi with shower gel, soap and towels provided. The room was clean and spacious. It was easily accessible by tram and we were able to get from the airport easily and into the centre of town without much fuss. It was in the B zone for transport so was fairly cheap for getting around. We stayed for three nights and slept well in between visiting almost all the museums in Berlin. We visited the DDR museum, The Spy museum, Checkpoint Charlie, The Games Museum, The Technic Museum, The Museum of Everything, and went to markets and ate out well. The hotel has maps and lots of little cards about attractions that give you money off deals and the staff all speak good English. We paid extra money to have breakfast everyday, where you could eat as much as you liked. It meant that we didn't need to have a lot for lunch as it kept you going all day.

This is NOT a hotel - rather disappointed

While advertised as an hotel, this is clearly NOT a hotel but a low-end hostel, just with the price of a mid-range hotel. Far outside the city center, with a couple of burned-out buildings in the immediate neighborhood, our wait at the reception was nearly 30 minutes, and the first room differed significantly from the advertised room. We perceived the reception staff as rude & confused, though eventually we got us the right room, where we had to put the sheets on the beds ourself - like in a real hostel. Only one working power outlet in the whole room, the next day some low-value clothing was stolen from the room and at least two other parties were booked for the same room, and showed up in our room in the middle of the night.

Travelled to Berlin with party of 28 for football tournament. For a sports hotel there are no facilities whatsoever and the 14 children we had were very unhappy and board. Continental breakfast okay, evening meal not so good.

This hotel needs to get some kind of facilities put in place as there were hundreds of children just roaming around with nothing today. There is nothing in the local area either.

Staff need to be a bit more customer service orientated. One of our party did not have breakfast although it was put on his bill - the words of the reception staff were \"how do we know you are not lying and did have breakfast\". This is a terrible comment to make to your guests. If they don't know who is having breakfast and who is not then they should have someone checking at the restaurant door.

Although the rooms were nice for a hotel that book groups of kids for sport events there is absolutely nothing in the hotel for kids to do. There is no greener outside for them either so kids are left with nothing to do.
Bar area is tiny for such a big hotel and the food is very bland.

This hotel was clean and not too bad to find. The room was decent. The TV has 15 channels and most are German except one. We bought the wifi for the week even though we stayed for two days cause it was cheaper that way and it worked very well. The pillows were very flat and so hard to sleep on. One day the hotel ran out of hot water from morning to 6pm and didn't warn anyone. Also, the hotel is extremely far from anything and it is so complicated to find your way. There is a bus stop and tram station both close to the hotel but you have to transfer a few times to get to the places worth seeing. And everything is German and hotel staff do not give you good tips when asked. One even told us the wrong stop for our hotel to return so we got off and were completely lost. Commutes are between 50 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes. Overall, the hotel was okay and clean I just do not recommend the location.

Good quality hotel in eastern suburbs of Berlin

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend in autumn and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hotel considering how much we paid. It didn't say anywhere that it was a hotel for athletes, most of the other guests were there for sports meets.

The positive: Spacious suite-like room with twin beds, sitting room w plasma tv screen, kitchenette w fridge/kettle/coffee maker and luggage area.

Very close to cold war era stasi prison: very interesting permanent exhibition and guided tours.

The negatives:
10 school groups were in hotel, older teens roaming the corridor at night. Busy breakfast room.
Cleaner let herself into my room twice at 8.00 and again at 9.00 - no door between main door and bedroom.
Short walk to tram stop but 22 minutes just to alexanderplatz.

Utilitarian hotel conversion in East Berlin

Clean and perfectly adequate accommodation with helpful young staff. 7 or 6 mins walk to two tram routes and max 25 mins tram ride to Alexanderplatz. First trip there probably best to get a cab from city centre. Once comfortable with tram stop location then cab not necessary. Trams run all night long and daily, 48 or 72 hour travel pass has it covered.

Hotel room was clean. A lot of construction work was going on including gym which was closed for refurbishment, unfortunately that was one of the main reasons we booked the room. Also the bathroom was in the corridor outside our room. There were lots of students in the hotel on the whole very well behaved. Very convenient for buses and trams into centre of Berlin. Would recommend mainly for students and young people. Not for people used to quality 3/4 star Hotels

The location was very uncomfortable and the room I received overlooked abandoned warehouse. apparently the hotel is used for sports teams who pass through or train nearby. This is really a 2 star place.

These are converted apartments for the days of communist East Germany. You do get your own bathroom BUT it is located outside your room (it is not en suite). This hotel is really a juiced up hostel for young kids. No noise insulation between rooms so if some teenager wants to make noise at 3 am in the morning everybody hears it. This happened during our visit. If didn't happen the second night after the hotel staff spoke with the youth's teacher. They do charge a good price just be aware this is NOT a luxury hotel. The breakfast was good.

It should be called a hostel rather than a hotel. No lift to top floor where our room was located the lifts ends on the 7th floor, we were on the 8th. Each room number on our floor is designated A or B with a shared common entrance into the hallway. This gives some concern regarding security as the bathroom and toilet is off the hallway. No sound insulation, corridor noises easily filtered into the rooms. Location wise,it lies on a tram route but it is far removed from the attractions of Berlin. Probably better suited to needs of travelling football fans than for a family.

We, as a family stayed in a Quad room. I expected it to be small and without a bathroom, but I was pleasantly surprised. The room was large, bright and clean. Lovely big window and a shower room just outside the bedroom (not shared). The staff were friendly (spoke English) and the buffet breakfast was very nice. The local tram was frequent into the main town, but it was a good brisk 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. Overall it was good value for money and I would stay there again.

I've stayed here before. If you don't mind a 20 min tram journey on the M6 into Berlin then it's a good place to stay. A lot of school groups and sports teams stay here. Apparently, it used to be the place the top stazi/KGb stayed! The stazi prison in a 2 min walk away - a good place to visit/have a tour of, espeially if you've seen 'The Lives of Others'.

Nice if You're Looking For a Hostel

We booked this hotel not knowing that it was a hostel. We were in the market for an actual hotel with a bathroom in our room. There was no mention on the website that the bathroom was separate from the room and in a 'common area' outside of our room door. Also, the other hotel guests were very loud throughout all three nights of our stay. The noise seemed to be traveling between floors as well.
As I stated, this is nice place in terms of a hostel, but it should be stated more clearly on the website that it is not a hotel.

Hotel Kolumbus Berlin - excellent value, low price

Stayed for 4 nights. Room clean, spacious and comfortable. In quiet residential area. 5 minutes walk to tram which takes you into central Berlin in 20 minutes. Staff friendly and efficient. I bought WiFi for 8 Euro which was valid for 7 days. Cheaper than buying it at 2.50 an hour. Excellent breakfast at 8 euro. Overall I was very satisfied.

The location of the hotel was fine, not great. But the low prizes made up for that! For the prize you pay the quality is great. By taking tram M6 you reach Aleksanderplatz within 20 minutes without any transfer to other transportation devices. So if you're planning on being in the centre a lot, this shouldn't be any problem. Only, for the young people it might be good to know that the last tram leaves at 0.39 from Aleksanderplatz, so if you want to go out late, be sure to pack your hiking shoes because it's a long way back! If you're really considering this, it's good to know that the hotel is open 24/7 so getting in late isn't a problem at all.
If you go to Berlin in a group of four, the hotel offers two rooms who have a shared hallway with two bathrooms. This way you're isolated from the rest of the guests.
Have a nice stay in Berlin!

It was nice to have 24 hr reception and free parking and the staff were polite and helpful. It was a very basic hotel, clean enough and spacious enough. It seemed very far from the city center though - about 10 mins walk to the tram station then 15 mins to Alexanderplatz (plus waiting time). Hotel felt like it could have been a college dorm or boarding school in a former life - not a normal hotel layout, e.g. our private bath was outside our room. It got a bit noisy the first morning we were there starting around 6 am, probably due to one of the many busloads of teenage soccer teams. But overall it was pretty reasonable and I'd recommend it for anyone on a budget.

The hotel was situated close to the well run tram route which took 15 minutes to Alexandraplatz, in Berlin.

The staff were friendly, accommodating and willing to assist.

An enjoyable experience.

Customer service was satisfactory and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Hotle was expensive compared to the stand. Toilet / bath was placed outside the room and I thought it was abnormal for a 3 stars hotel.
When we arrived the room was old food in the cupboard. so cleaning was not quite optimal

Hotel Kolumbus poor service

Hotel doen't provide wake up call service, because they do not have a phone in the room.
They don't want to knock to the door as well.
It creates a big problem to the customers.

worth every penny

A hotel room will always be the same: a bed, a TV, and a bathroom. It's the staff that makes it feel or not feel like home and i certainly felt at home there. The fact that they all spoke English made things very easy for me. Everyone was very friendly and willing to help with anything i needed.

Dieses Hostel bräuchte mal ein komplettes makeover. Wir waren in anderen a&o Hostels, die gepflegter und sauberer waren. Ich habe die Bettwäsche abgezogen und darunter wartete das Grauen, auf Decke und Kissen große gelbe Flecken, sowie auf der Matratze weiße Flecken.
Im Bad roch es die ganze Zeit nach Urin, dicker brauner Rand im WC Becken. WC Brille schief. Die Armatur am Waschbecken sehr verkalkt, und das Abflussrohr verkeimt von außen. An der Decke im Bad ein schwarzer größerer Wasser/Schimmelfleck.
Man hatte das Bad nicht im Zimmer, das ist in diesem Hostel nicht ersichtlich in der Buchung.
Man kann das WC mit persönlichen Sachen nicht von außen abschließen und nebenan ist noch ein Zimmer mit Bad. Man hat einen Vorraum, wo Zimmer .12 und .13 zusammen in den Vorraum rein können. Hab ich so bei den anderen a&o Hostels nicht erlebt. Fand ich irgendwie gruselig, wenn man z.B. nachts zur Toilette muss und erst in den Vorraum muss. Ich habe über Expedia gebucht, Die Mitarbeiterinnen an der Rezeption sind dafür super nett.

Der Aufenthalt war leider nicht ganz zufriedenstellend. Die Dusche war nicht sauber, hinter dem Bett befanden sich Spinnennetze und Spinnen. Außerdem funktionierte das Licht am Bett sowie der Fernseher nicht. Es wäre wünschenswert, wenn auf Expedia deutlicher ersichtlich wäre, dass es sich bei der Unterkunft um ein Hostel handelt. Diese Information hätte meine Buchungsentscheidung beeinflusst.
