As there is no hotel staff per se - automated check in and no ammenties I gave those two reviews as a 3 out of 5 - the rest of the hotel, being the room - 10 out of 10 - I love how it is basically beside the train station, which makes it very convenient. Excellent sound proofing so you don't hear the trains - well perhaps a bit - but i love trains so it didn't bother me.

Great location just a short walk from the main station and central Zurich.
Easy check-in via the touch screen.
Clean and good quality interior fittings.
The windows have shutters on them, some controlled via switches.
Comfortable bed, clean room.
Bag storage in the basement controlled via key card for security.
Amazing coffee and pastries served in the cafe, the hazelnut latte was fantastic also!
I’d happily stay here again and would reccomend to friends/colleagues

Brilliant location, good room, good value for money as we only paid GBP 98 for a night for two adults being a Sunday night. The generous amount of coffee capsules (4+1 decaf) was super generous for Europe. If only the wash basin in the bathroom was usable. The drain was blocked and required waiting between uses. As we only stayed one night leaving early in the morning, we reported the issue to house keeping on our way out. Shower was not as good as other places in Switzerland that we stayed, but quite ok.
Other comments are: The electronic self check in means that you can only start checking in at 2, and you need to enter your details including passport number etc. I can imagine a queue in the busier seasons as there is only one single terminal for check in. Also, since there is one person running the cafe, they were quite pressured for time between making drinks, serving and answering the inevitable questions from guests trying to check in. Plug points could be more convenient location wise. If the bed was raised style, the bottom of bed could house luggage and make it within reach of vacuum cleaner. Consider a fold out table above the bench and adding a mini fridge. I will consider the hotel for next stay.

We had 2 rooms, room 46 and 49. Had to wait until 2pm to access the building and then check in was online on a computer. There is no front desk staff. Room 46 was great, spacious and well appointed. Nice in room amenities. Room 46 on the other hand, needs work. It was dusty, missing a curtain and the bathroom sink doesn’t drain well. There was a party in the apartment building next to the room and everyone was looking into my daughter’s room while she was in her pajamas. I tried to call the hotel 3 times to try and fix it, but no one answered the phone. I ended up fixing up a contraption to hold up a towel to cover the window. These complaints were repeatedly mentioned by previous Expedia customers, yet the hotel does nothing to correct them. Expedia repeatedly called the hotel to ask them for a partial refund on my behalf, but they refused to do anything. Very disappointing. Do not stay in room 49.

Very convenient location. Nice coffee machine inside the room. If you could let me know that there is a European power socket located underneath the coffee table, I would not walk all the way to a local Interdiscount store to purchase one (Swiss to European power point adaptor).

As others have said, the room is small. The only option to get into the bed is to crawl over the other person in the bed (if you are the person sleeping on the inside). And the pillows leave MUCH to be desired! The shower is nice and hot with good water pressure. And the toiletries smell wonderful. You will NOT meet a front desk person to check yourself in: only the bartender is available to help you should you have any troubles. The bartender was very nice!

Ideal location close to the main rail station. Also local to the bus station where we had some trips booked so location wise was perfect.
For those that want peace and quiet this isn't the place because of being so close to the railway station which is in use nearly 24 hours a day.
The room itself was clean, the bed was comfortable. The room was cleaned daily.
We had no problems whatsoever

This hotel was perfect for an overnight in Zurich. It is a very easy and quick walk from the train. The area is safe, with a grocery store right across the street! We did not eat at the restaurant, but it was very nice looking. The room itself was very clean, comfortable bed, spacious. Large bathroom. Lovely to be able to open the windows and get fresh air. Check in is at a kiosk right inside the restaurant. The bartender is there to help if needed. But it went smooth. There is an elevator, which was great for luggage. Even though it is literally next to the train tracks, the windows were well insulated and the room was quiet. There is no air conditioning, so in the summer, I would guess it would be quite hot. But for us, it was perfect to be able to walk into old town Zurich and see the sights. Would definitely recommend!

I liked the decor but everthing in the room did feel quite cheap, especially the bedding, one side had one pillow and one side had two pillows stuffed in one case. The pillows were far too thin. The room was just quite worn, scuffs all over the walls etc. Great location though but i think overproced for the quality.

The room was clean but small. The double bed was against the wall so one person would struggle to get up in the night without waking the other. It was very hot when we stayed - the room was airconditioned but not a comfortable night's sleep if you were sleeping against the wall. Definitely worth considering upgrading to a bigger room if staying during the warmer months.

No Air Conditioning during summer stay

I would not recommend staying here during warm months. The air conditioning in the room was not working at all. We stayed for 3 nights & each day when we reached out to let them know our room was very warm they said they would take care of it & they never did. There is not s formal front desk & we were usually out for the day before anyone arrived & we returned to the hotel after the staff had left for the day so there was never anyone to discuss the problem with them n person but I would call each day & ask them to resolve it while we were out. Unfortunately leaving the windows open for a breeze was not am option as the hotel is located directly next to Zurich HB which was tremendously convenient for travel but way too loud overnight to keep windows open. The temperature of the room was between 80-82 degrees the entire staff even though we had the temperature set much lower. I am still waiting to hear back from the hotel directly or hotels.com for resolution. A 3 night stay totaled over $1,000. This is not acceptable for a hotel with no air conditioning in the middle of summer.

The hotel is around 5 mins walk from train station. There are many tram stops around the hotel make it easy to get around Zurich. Many groceries store and good local restaurants to choose from within 5-10 mins walk. I would stay here again if we go back to Zurich.

Some minors considerations

Very closely located to train station which was very convenient. Hotel nice and stylish however bedroom had some wear and tear to decor. Twice I needed help from staff was due to issues with check in machine and with deactivated card - on both occasions the only staff available was the man at the bar. He was very helpful but he had to consult colleague on both occasions for support as he was managing the bar. I felt bad for him and he was helpless and didn’t know how to help which seemed to leave him feeling guilty. I had to walk to sister hotel on one of the occasions to fix card which was only 1 minute away but still may not please everybody. Pillows very soft, and rooms sadly very dark. When you put the lights on there was only the option for full bright lights all around the room or nothing so wasn’t a great ambience. Overall would recommend but with these points in mind.

Cute hotel in a great location with excellent transport links and easy to walk to. Lovely decor and a quiet and relaxing room.

Suggest some instructional info be left in rooms pertaining to hidden secret location of room thermostat. Addition of crockery, cutlery and drinking vessel would be useful in room with ‘kitchenette’, otherwise it’s really just a room with an extra sink. (Fridge would be expected in all rooms in a ‘boutique’ hotel). Additional alternative pillows recommended to facilitate support preference of guests also recommended.. not everyone likes a flat pillow.

Check in was a little confusing as we were told to use code to access the main door, but the keypad wasn't working. It turned out the door was unlocked, and then we had to use a tablet to check ourselves in and get our key card. Other than that, this place was great! Right next to the central station and within walking distance of a lot of great food and drink options.

Overall it was a good place with cute decor and roomy space. However, the room was very warm and the room fan did not work very well. Also the windows could not be left open at night since the train station was right next door and it would get too loud with all the trains passing. During the day it was noisy due to the nearby construction.

The location is very convenient to the train station and was perfect as a home base for our two days of train travel around Switzerland and early morning trip to the airport for our departing flight. We were very disappointed in the room specifically the lack of storage...no drawers, small \"closet\" with ONE hanger and some hooks on the wall. The bathroom pocket doors didn't close well and had no latch so privacy when using the toilet was a bit of an issue. I am not sure I am a fan of the self-check in as there really wasn't anyone available to ask questions about the area, dining options etc.

Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in

HORRIFIC! The kinder of the two employees I interacted with helped a lot and she was great, but the first woman I dealt with does not belong in hospitality. I arrived with two people in a room both only fitting one and set for one. It was also almost 30 degrees in there. This woman tried to convince me I was wrong about the room being set for one and refused to give me a fan when I asked. I found out the next day the hotel does have fans. So she knew we were in this attic closet of a room in a bed and space for one in high temperatures and offered no help as we stayed up through the night sweating and squeezing into a twin bed set for one. When I asked to cancel since they couldn’t offer a room to fit us she rudely said I’d be charged. No empathy. No solutions. What a horrible human being. That said, be warned, the “wispy” room means EXTREMELY small and room 41 is the size of a walk in closet with a small window that can only be slightly opened. The pillows are terrible and our bathroom sink was clogged. The bathroom door didn’t stay closed no matter what we did so you have to go and keep a hand or foot on it. The shower door is smaller than it should be so your bathroom will be soaked with each shower.

A true gem

The hotel is a boutique style and therefore it is fairly small and quiet. It is located very close to the central station and is extremely convenient to go around.
The guests need to do self check in, which is quite straightforward. At the check in, Andras helped us with the settling in, even though he is not really a front desk boy. He is extremely helpful and super nice. He works at the cafe at the entrance to the hotel. In the morning, Oaryna, who is on her shift at the cafe gave us plenty of great tips.
In a way the people at the cafe who may not be part of the hotel are the best gem of this hotel.
About the room, it is very cozy and clean. The bed is very comfy. We got a attic room so we got slanted walls, but that’s what we wanted. Our room is certainly not as spacious as in some countries, but it should be noted that it is quite a nice sized Swiss hotel.
I would like to add two suggestions that might make it cherry on top for this already great hotel. (1) The owner may consider adding either a curtain or door to fully close the shower area. No matter how carefully we showered, we got water splashing out since it is only a half closure. (2) Maybe the hotel could provide a “no cleaning or new towel” option such as a sign or something. That way, maybe it can be more eco friendly.
Just a pointer US travelers. As per Swiss rule, the hotel could only keep the AC only at 24 Celsius at the lowest. So it can feel quite warm. But it is not the hotel’s fault.

Checked in on a kiosk. Never met anyone that worked at the hotel, the restaurant bartender had to help us check in. The air conditioning in our room did not work on the top floor (heat rises) so we opened windows. The hotel backs up to the train station. The room was extremely hot and loud. Was miserable after a long day of travel and jet lag. Additionally, assuming someone threw up in the elevator.. There were marks all over the floor and smelt absolutely disgusting. Like covered our noses and held our breath disgusting.

The only positives were the actual room was nice. Comfortable bed and clean room. Was overall very disappointed.

Hotel Josef is a very decent hotel for a couple of days.
The room size was fine; location was excellent being very close to the train/bus station; bed and bedding very very comfortable.

Check in was clunky and only successful with the help of the kind guy at the coffee shop (attached to the hotel.
Shower drain didn’t work so water overflowed onto the bathroom floor. Room furniture was uncomfortable, but was at least existed.

Overall rating is satisfactory, given it was a short stopover.

It’s ridiculous that there’s only one self check in machine and the reception is in another hotel. The staff in the cafe is only equipped to help with basic check and directs all other operational matters to hotel Montana (where the reception is).

I booked for 2 nights in 2 separate bookings which the machine and the cafe staff are unable to assist with. I then had to go to hotel Montana to explain this situation and the reception assured that there was no issues since I was allocated the same room.

There was obviously an issue with the key card the next day and I was unable to enter my room. The new key card was given to the cafe staff which was unaware of the situation and had to call the reception for clarification.

The check in procedure is extremely messy and badly managed.

Additionally, I paid for a kitchenette, deluxe studio room (the largest / most expensive option) but there was no amenities to use the kitchenette - only a fridge and a coffee machine - no basic kitchen utensils nor spoon/ fork.

Other than the location which is near Zurich HB, there are no pull factors of this hotel as the price is too steep for such a basic room that has no facilities.

Only one computer for self check in and there is a queue, not much privacy as other people can see the details you put in while checking in. Bedroom does not cater for tourist, no international electric sockets.
On the other hand, luggage storage is available for the day even after check out and they have molton brown toiletries in the room.

Checking in was terrible. The worst I’ve ever experienced at any hotel. Couldn’t contact anyone. If you’re an international traveller they don’t have what’s app and only want you to call them. The cafe staff where self check in initially didn’t even assist. It’s a shame as the room was great so was the location by the train station. Shower head was also broken. All round bad stay sadly what should have been a great one night stay.

Had a wonderful stay here with my daughter. It was priced well for how close it was to the train station and all the sights. Staff was all friendly and helpful, and the room was well equipped. We especially enjoyed the Nespresso machine, the very comfortable bed, and the soundproofing. It was also awesome to be able to use Netflix!

Perfect location and very friendly staff. Wonderfully comfortable bed. Only minus was that the room was quite dark without enough lighting. Would encourage the hotel to add some overhead lighting - perhaps dimmable track lights to allow the guest to choose the right mood.

Also be advised that the outlets are all ungrounded two prong. This created a small challenge for us as we brought adapters in the usual round European grounded style but could not use them.

I do not enjoyed to have to walk in dark at night from the hotel to the parent hotel to get a bath towel. I felt unsafe . They shorted me one big bath towel. Room is too small and bed is too high. Hard to get in and out. Bath room gets wet after showers

Very cozy hotel. First time using a self check in system for a hotel. So no concierge downstairs. That might be a turn off for some people but we didn’t mind it. It’s right next to the main train station which is convenient. It took us a while to find out how to open the luggage room to put our bags in until check in time since there’s no concierge but talking to the cafe barista helped. Really nice and safe area.

No human service, no clear instruction, trouble at check in and check out but thanks to the waiter of the downstairs Resturant he helped so much. Yet the whole building lack of signs and no instructions, very confusing

Self service to check in and check out with luggage hold etc is challenging. Corridors are dark and shady!! Room is extremely small with a table between the wall and bed with no way to walk. To work on your laptop you have to lie down on bed. Bed side light was broken. There is no switch to turn on from the bed. And incredibly expensive for shabby stay. Only good thing is that this place is close to the main train station. Everything else is negative.

Good location hotel, a few minutes walk from Zurich HB train station. Good room, good bathroom with walk in shower.
Would recommend. Small room, but fine for a couple of nights.

Cute hotel though the room I got had a broken shower. The hotel is in close proximity to main transportation hub and to a number of nice stores and restaurants!
