This is a cheap hotel in a cute and otherwise expensive neighborhood. While I'm usually pretty laid back while budget traveling, and was expecting not the fanciest accommodation, my room had black mold in the shower (no exhaust fan), windows that don't open, bodily fluid stains on the comforter, and even a giant cockroach roommate. The common room balcony was filled with sad dead plants. Overall a bit depressing, but the bed was moderately comfortable. The \"soundproofing\" they mention is to the outside and from the pub below—you can still hear your hotel neighbors slamming their doors. The hotel rooms are above a pub that stays open till 6am, with gambling/slot machines and a steady stream of men drinking and watching sports. Good to know for women traveling alone.

This is essentially a pub, with a few rooms available upstairs.

Positives - staff were friendly enough, complimentary drink while waiting to check in (at the bar) beds were comfy and clean, location was good for what we needed

Negatives - room needs quite a few cosmetic repairs, took 10 mins for hot water to run through the shower, modem shoved up behind the tv was flashing lights all night, room was very close to a common kitchen area and even an average level conversation out there is heard clear as day whilst on our room.

I’d stay there again under the right circumstances.

The room was fine. The staff was incompetent. I reserved a room for three nights but because of an airline issue, I arrived a day late. When I arrived, I was charged for the full three nights stay - fair enough; I reserved the room for three nights, after all. But, as soon as I got to my room, I saw that the hotel had already charged me for the full three nights the previous day. I talked to the manager immediately. He was very apologetic but couldn’t figure out how to do the refund. The next day, I talked to a different manager, who told me I needed to talk to the licensee. So I called the licensee the next day, who took my credit card info and said “OK, all done.” Except he didn’t credit my account, he actually charged me AGAIN for the full three-night stay. So then I had to leave a voicemail and send an email saying “ You f***ed up, FIX this.” (In more diplomatic language.) Only then was any money actually credited to my account, but the amount was $100 USD less than what was overcharged. So I had to send another email, with screenshots from my account, saying “You still owe me $100.” Only then did I get my improperly billed money back. I would never stay at the Crown Hotel Surry Hills again.

Overall the hotel is older than it appears in the listing. There is no front desk to speak of. You have to find one of the bartenders on the first floor to check you in on the second floor. All the rooms are on the second floor. The people who worked there were nice. The carpet was dirty. There was piss stain on the bedspread where it touched the floor.

One thing the shower there was no where to put anything,
Everything got wet evertime we took showers,
We did kill one cockroach in the bathroom.
The 1st night we received our complimentary cocktail we could get a martini then the next two nights we were told only beer or wine.
Everyone was very nice and accommodating.

what an amazing pub, great and very friendly staff, drinks cheaper than most other places around, food was excellent. There is a breakfast room where you can make your own tea/coffee cereal. Free drink when booked accommodation and 10% off food. The place had a really good feel and vibe. Rooms were excellent. Great location plenty stores, restaurants around pub. Definitely highly recommend.

The property is half way between Newtown & Oxford St, perfect for an easy uber to nightlife. It is near 100 resturants, like Turkish Pizza (loved Erysies!) or polish (great food, but i forgot the name). The hotel offers a heap of brekfast stuff at no charge, so that was awesome. The bathroom looked recently renovated, too.
I thought it was going to be noisy on Cleaveland st, but it wasn't (the double windows work well).
We even found a park out the front - Crown st loading zone - 15min 6 am to 6p.m., 4 hour to 10 p.m. free to 6 a.m.

I can recomend this place if you want something unpretentious and affordable in the heart of the city.

The door to our bathroom couldn’t be opened or closed without getting stuck, we had to lift the door and use our bodies to push it. The shower drain was clogged and so the water would pool at the bottom and spill out of the shower. We had slept in late (only till 10) when the room cleaners came around and let themselves into the room without warning. There was zero parking so we had to risk getting a fine, luckily we didn’t. There was no mattress cover, just a sheet, the quilt was sandwiched by two sheets, no quilt cover. Other than that the place was quite nice as well as staff. Not worth the price though unfortunately.

The Crown Hotel is a great place to stay. Walking distance to Moore Park/SCG/Accor stadium. The rooms are well appointed with mini fridge and comfy bed. The communal kitchen was a lovely addition, where you can make complimentary tea and coffee. Even though located on a busy road, the rooms are remarkable sound proof and we had no trouble sleeping. Would stay there again!

Warmly welcomed and allowed early check in.
Room comfortable and clean, but a sprinker wasn't properly installed in ceiling. Room was off terrace, only one other room had access. Could use kitchen 24/7. Breakfast included- fresh croissants and pastries on first morning, but not the next morning which was disappointing. Cereal, yoghurt, juices, coffee, tea, chocolate and milk available. No bread even though there was a toaster. Above a pub with pokies and sports bar, but could not hear any noise. Location was great and restaurants abundant.

We were very suprised with the hotel and the room, as it was in the Surry Hills area which is full of heritage buildings. The room was fabulous and the breakfast facilities were first class.
We dealt with Star and she was just that a Star. She is definately in the right job, her customer service skills were excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Very bubbly person for sure a people person.

Staff (Star) was awesome, The shared kitchen between 8 rooms was really convenient, fresh fruit, milk, pastries etc each day. Parking is a little tricky (but you only need to park a block away and it’s free during weekend). It’s so close to the city and it’s a buzzing location at night. Highly recommend! Thanks!

I liked the shared kitchen and the room was very clean. Staff were lovely.

Got back to the room late and had an early start so was looking forward to sleep. Unfortunately constant sound of water dripping/leaking from either the mini bar fridge or a pipe made sleep difficult. To be fair we didn't report to hotel staff due to late hour and I'm sure if we had they would have taken action to resolve.Only other gripe was bathroom lighting ultra dim which made getting ready for a formal function difficult. Could be easily resolved by mounting a small backlit makeup mirror next to the vanity.

I stayed here as it was close to my Grandsons wedding venue. I was very happy with the facilities and they are separate to the Pub bars downstairs. The Manager I checked in with was very helpful and explained all to me. I would recommend this accommodation to anyone looking to be close to the city and not too expensive.

The hotel was conveniently located, relatively close to the CBD and very close to the venue I needed to attend in Surry Hills. The staff were courteous, friendly and helpful. The building is old but my accommodation was clean and comfortable. There is also a nicely renovated communal \"breakout\" area with a modern kitchen and dining facilities where guests can prepare their own breakfast. From my perspective there were only two negatives, both of which were relatively minor: (1) The accommodation staff only worked daytime hours so nobody other than bar staff in attendance after hours. (2) The hotel WiFi tended to \"drop out\" from time to time, which caused some frustration while working on my laptop in the evenings. Nevertheless, I would recommend this hotel as a good place to stay.

Rooms were clean and modern and comfortable. Amenities were great. Staff were super friendly. Breakfast amenities in the kitchen were tasty and well stocked. Location was super convenient with everything we needed in close walking distance. Would stay again. We weren't quite sure what it would be like staying above a pub but there were no noise issues, the decor was stylish and you wouldn't even have known what was downstairs.

The hotel was completely locked up when I arrived about 0830am..had planned to be able to leave my bags and check in later, had to find a coffee shop to hang out and then rang the hotel at 9 am and was then able to check in. The receptionist Jenna was very helpful. A couple of things to mention..this is a small hotel and the ground floor is a pub, if you are looking for a convienent location for Opera House etc, this is not it. This part of Surrey Hills has some great restaurants and bars, however, definitely more of a “locals” area. Also, Airport shuttles do not pick up from this hotel, so it is Über it Taxi, cost me $40AUD at 730 in the morning, however, rush hour times the traffic is awful so will take a lot longer and more expensive. The hotel had a great shared kitchen with everything you need for a continental breakfast and access 24/7.

An excellent concept - rooms were modern, clean, and an impressive central kitchen was well equipped. Room 5, our room, was very quiet considering the amount of noisy traffic outside, thanks to being on the second floor with good double glazing. The sliding door to the bathroom was, however, in need of repair, as it jammed badly and needed effort and noise to open and shut.

1st time stay was great 2nd was a disaster

Stayed here a month or so back. Brillant great room and service. So much so i booked again within a week.

This time room was much smaller, windows couldnt be open and the room smelt so bad of mold. To top it off we was awoken at 2am by water pourinv out of the aircon (explains the mold smell) . We were infomred by the staff that morning that it happens in that room and they have tried fixing it but if keeps breaking. If thats the case you should stop booking that room.

The hotel and its staff are lovely, breakfast was nice and the pub down stairs has a great vibe. But I'm unsure on wether i would book again given my 50/50 experience.

We strugglwd to find a staff member to let us check in. Once found, the staff member was very friendly and professional. Our bathroom looked partially cleaned but there was toothpaste on the floor. The room was comfortable however the bottom sheet on our bed didn't reach down the bottom of the bed exposing about 15cm of the mattress. We wished to speak with a staff member as we checked out but couldn't find anyone.

Their computer system was down so they charged us our deposit which we didn't end up getting back. The shower was mouldy. Music from the bad below played loudly until 12:30am. Staff didn't even know how to check in. Reception isn't staffed on weekend and the bar was not open until 10 which ment know one was available for information. I wouldn't recommnd this hotel. Also there is no parking.

We stayed for 2 night at this hotel. Upon arrival we were informed that we were placed in a disability access room with absolutely no windows. A detail that was left out from all parts of the reservation which I believe should be mentioned. The hotel staff was great and able to move us to a room with a window. Upon moving into the new room the window blind was broken, tv remote missing and random ants were found near the refrigerator. Hotel staff called someone to fix the blind and bring us a new remote while we went out for a walk. Upon returning to prepare for dinner we saw the bathroom. The bathroom was covered in black tiles and white grout. however, half of the grout was black and looked very dirty. It was rather disgusting. Now the big kicker in this hotel room, after opening the medicine cabinet to put away the blow dryer the whole cabinet completely came off the wall and FELL forward landing on my head and arm (bruised for a week). So hear I am holding up this medicine cabinet that clearly came off the wall due to poor installation and it was obvious this was not the first time as there were different colored glue marks from this happening before. Hotel staff was real apologetic and the manager finally came and told us our stay would be comped for both nights and they would move us to another room. Which was the only reason we stayed. After reaching out for the refund they ended up only refunding 1 day. Do yourself a favor skip this place at all costs.

Good location for travel

We stayed at the Crown for a week with one night away in the Blue Mountains. This hotel is over a bar/gambling venue but in no way is that a problem. You have your own entrance if you don't like walking through the bar. The staff were all extremely pleasant and helpful. It would be unfair to single anyone out as they were all brilliant. The room was large, clean, plenty of good toiletries with an adequate toilet and shower room. There was very little noise, just occasionally from the traffic due to the very effective insulated windows. The huge television had a good range of programmes. So why have I only given it 4 rather than 5? The little details were missing. There was an obvious lack of management once the bar had closed at 6am. In the breakfast area there was a good supply of cereals, bread, yogurt, fruit, jams etc (though one day one loaf of bread was mouldy!) However, there was often a shortage of crockery, especially bowls from which to eat your cereals. As there wasn't anyone in reception or bar until at least 9am, it was impossible to get further supplies.
I found the room very claustrophobic as we couldn't open the window. It got very warm without the air con on so we had to leave this on all night. Unfortunately, it blew cold air directly on to my face whilst in bed. The chair at the table had a screw missing and was wobbly. The advertised Wifi was virtually non existent unless I stood at the door where I could get a weak signal.

Good spot, nice room, but overall disappointing

Check in was easy and pleasant.
Room appeared to be well appointed, but upon further investigation it was below par.
The floor wasnt vaccumed and I became acquainted with the previous guests toenail!
The bathroom looked like it needed a good scrub and the toilet ran most of the night.
The most disappoinitng part was breakfast. I checked at 6: 6:30 and & 7am and still no sign of new breakfast supplies.
And the curdled milk in the Nespresso machine, well that was just something else.

Wifi was painful, so had to resort to using my phone data.

I feel like if they had an overhaul of the kitchen routine, and ensured that there were clean glasses druing the day and night, fresh breakfast supplies etc then the experience would have been vastly different. Its pretty poor to see the dishes from the morning, still in the sink at 9pm that evening.

Updside - bed and pillows were super comfortable, loads of storage and great tv. The room was really really quiet, could not hear the street or pub noise.

Looks can be deceiving

Poor signage outside and no indication of a reception area. Turns out it's actually called DOME for the outside. Air con size insufficient; if its humid, you'll sweat. No tv channels except TAB betting. Dirty bathroom. Dirty dishes. Queen sheets on king bed meaning my feet were touching the mattress.. gross. Could hear guests walking in and out of rooms. Not sound proofed. Cheap, but not so cheerful.
