Perfect stay. I did not expect breakfast included so it was a nice surprise.it was a good selection.
I used the gym, pool, jacuzzi and sauna and it was not busy.
We used the park and ride bus which was a cross the road from the hotel when we went to the city centre which was £2.50 return.

Disappointing Stay

We stayed at this Holiday Inn Group (IHG) hotel over the weekend and were unfortunately very disappointed with our experience.

Upon arrival, we were informed that the swimming pool was out of order. The main reason we chose this hotel was specifically because it had a pool, so this was extremely frustrating. We were told the pool had been closed for several days, and had we been made aware of this in advance, we would have cancelled our booking. We swim daily due to arthritis, so we had no choice but to travel to the local swimming baths instead, which was very inconvenient.

In addition, there was an extremely unpleasant smell in the hallway, particularly from around room 300 onwards and extending past the 400s. We were staying in room 409, and the smell was very off-putting throughout our stay.

Overall, this was not the experience we expected from an IHG hotel, and we feel the lack of communication regarding the pool and the unpleasant conditions in the hallway significantly affected our stay.

Booked 2 rooms in july for December xmas treat. Hotel fully booked so couldn't change rooms...one room was booked as a double and they gave us a twin. The family room smelt awful of damp and mould and there was mould on the walls and celling and every thing felt damp the bedding, Towels and in the air we stayed in 336. We had my 4 year old with us and my partner felt ill having a cold on his chest.

Reason for choosing hotel, swimming pool, was closed with general comment of 'maintenance' from receptionist. Would have been nice if discount or bar voucher had been offered as compensation. Windows in room were both open, presume due to smoking of previous guests. Air con heating not working so room never warmed up after closing the window. Only one socket at side of bed to charge our phones. No ceiling light so bedroom felt gloomy despite every light being on.
Long wait to check out 'need to check your room doesn't have extra charges to pay'. They have my credit card if there had been but there weren't any.
Not staff fault but hotel was disappointing.

When we first arrived the hotel had the impression that we had only booked one room, instead of the actual two. It was a faff.
Breakfast was dreadful. Tepid over cooked, dried out and of poor quality. The toaster was pretty ineffective giving slightly warm bread that couldn’t be described as toast. One machine dispensing hot drinks very very slowly. I saw on another review that guests were offered omelettes, pancakes and various other cooked eggs. That wasn’t my experience, I was offered nothing.

Stay here quite often, overall its good. Rooms vary enormously in quality, maybe they are undertaking improvements? The last stay was in an Executive room (needed a desk) in previous visits this has had a few welcome touches, fridge etc. This time there wasn’t so much as a USB socket. Breakfast made up for a flat phone though!

Room needed a better clean, cobwebs down walls in corners, fan in bathroom full of dust. Lamps by bed full of dust. At breakfast wasnt asked if any dietary requirements, am veggie and not much hot food to eat, ended up with just mushrooms, tomatoes and hash browns (dont like eggs or baked beans).

We enjoyed the Holiday Inn South for a number of reasons,the main one being the staff.ALL staff were attentive especially Gohar who treated us very respectfully and he found it great that we treated him with respect.Any food that we ate was tasty and to our needs.Arriving by car and having free parking is a bonus and if required there is a bus stop across the road to take you into town.Like the majority of hotels a little bit of TLC is required.

Breakfast was okay a few things were lovely but the bacon was too tough, the eggs were only good if you got them when they were first put out if you didn’t they were like rubber! Also the scrambled eggs were very dry. The hotel staff were lovely and were on hand if you had any problems. We found the hotel needs needs a bit of TLC apart from the spa and pool, that was fab. The bar needs to have a bit more choice, no slimline tonic’s which I found very strange plus no flavoured tonic’s. Cokes should have other options not just syrup mixer on tap! On saying all this, I found out that this hotel was housing illegals up to a few weeks ago so things take time to get back to running normally again. Would come again? Yes I think we would.

Hotel room was very quiet with black out blinds and a comfortable bed, so we had a great night's sleep. The room and bathroom was spotless. The only downside is that the corridors looked a bit scruffy, but I guess they get a lot of wear. The bedrooms, lounge and reception were great. We didn't use the pool or gym but it looked good.

The hotel needs a refurbishment tbh, it’s a bit battered and old, signs of much wear and tear, eg Doors with years of dirty hand prints.

It’s in a great location and would really benefit from a modernisation.

The Restaurant staff were superb, in particular was Mark (on duty 26th Sep 2025 at 1815hrs) who was also mentoring another staff member. He was quite excellent, knowledgable, efficient and not over bearing, please pass this onto him. The other staff were also fantastic, I dian girl was very pleasant and efficient..!

Problems perhaps affected by the excellent earlier stop in
Warwick/Stratford. The premises are looking very tired, the
swimming pool was closed for re-furbishment, after heavy rain the ceiling of our room leaked overnight and soaked my duvet. Had to move ourselves to a new room a long way along the corridors. Our room missed cleaning on two occasions, evening meal was served in the bar area where
the majority of seating was on high bar stools certainly out
of reach for “senior”citizens. All the above was reported for the attention of the management who didn’t even have the courtesy to respond!
On the plus side John on reception was courteous and helpful and the breakfast’s excellent

A long walk to the room but then we did ask for a quiet room. The friendly service from (Mark?) when we ordered food & drinks in the evening was excellent( he’s a wonderful salesman!) The only downside was the extreme heat due to the air conditioning not working on a day when the temperature had been in the high 20’s.
We used the pool& jacuzzi before breakfast which was fine but the paint is hanging off the rails above the jacuzzi- definitely needs sorting.

However the stay was let down by the bathroom which although clean. The shower screen on the bath didn't stay back, repeatedly coming in on you limiting the amount of room to shower in.

Generally very good after disappointing start.

Receptionist quite brusque when we checked in. Hotel room very warm as aircon seemed not to be working. Although a room fan had been provided. Gym and pool had already shut (8 p.m) when we arrived which we thought was little early.
However, bar-staff and others around friendly and accommodating. Following morning gym/ pool staff very friendly and helpful and all said hello when passing in corridors. Breakfast was another very good experience with polite helpful staff and a great spread. No faults there at all.

No AC despite it being advertised by hotel

Individual AC in my room with a control panel on the wall but it didn’t work. So it was high 20s in the room and impossible to sleep, I just got a couple of restless hours. I was asked at checkout if everything was ok and I mentioned about the ac. Response was that the rooms I was in were on a malfunctioning system. This makes no sense as I mentioned there was an individual unit in my room it was not centralised ac. I asked if the other rooms had ac but was told approximately 60 percent of rooms have functioning ac so beware booking this hotel in the summertime!!! If you’re from Africa or southern Europe you might be ok but if not you will not get any sleep with the excruciating heat and lack of ventilation!

We booked to superior rooms. When we arrived the hotel had no power and no facilities available. We couldn’t book in or use any convenience. We had to leave and come back 3 hrs later. The staff were very good and tried their best at all times. They offered to store our luggage until we returned to try booking in again.The hvac in the rooms was not available and we had a small fan provided which was not much use on one of the hottest days of the year. I suspect it had been out of action for at least a few days. If so that’s not acceptable. Basically a very poor hotel experience but not the fault of the staff we encountered who were all excellent despite obviously having to handle a lot of pressure. Not up to standard.

The air-conditioning has been switched off from what i can make on in other reviews for about 2 months now. Yet reception staff wont admit that. It was incredibly hot and the corridors were boiling, room was nothing more than a sauna. Uttered ridiculous. Staff claim its broken...if something is broken down you get people in to fix it no??? Not these kit. Cost saving at the expense of the customer. Will never stay again and warn others from doing so.

Chester is a fantastic city to visit especially with the children. Lots to see and do. We dod a family trail and learnt do much. The hotel was a great base, just across the road is a park and ride bus service that took you straight to the centre snd easy to pick up back to the hotel. Great to have the pool and restaurant service too the breakfast certainly filled us up for our days out.

Generally the hotel was underwhelming in Service terms whether in the bar, restaurant or breakfast services. Chaotic in terms of seeming to be able to manage basic processes (taking an order/handling cash correctly/getting table orders right/ completely forgetting items ordered/ items completely empty or missing at breakfast etc). Overall experience was impacted by stress of wondering if we could order something that would 1] turn up at all 2] partially turn up 3] eventually turn up but be partial order or incorrect etc.
