Great location for British museum and 15 minutes to several theaters. Easy access to lots of sights. Do to e tal breakfast was fine but a little pricey for what you got. We did have room 1 in the basement which was ok lots of space but it’s under the lobby and we could hear people at all hours upstairs

Stayed 3 nights. Great location near the British museum. Close to everything but quiet. Room was clean and a good size. A little run down looking. Enjoyed having a fridge in the room. Bed was not as comfortable as I had hoped but we were able to sleep ok. Didn’t try the breakfast.

Room clean and tidy. Plenty of toiltries an yea and coffee. Check in was a nightmare. Took 1 hr. Wanted a passport. Why would we be carrying a passport.? Not a well trained member of staff. Dealt with other guests and kept having to ring her manager for help.!!!!!

The property is awesome. But the room was extremely small. This may be a feature of hotels in the center of London, but still this is good to know. The bathroom was ridiculously and impractically cramped.

Perfectly adequate, but we were there on a VERY warm long weekend in London. Room on 3rd level was attic-like hot. Was able to crack windows and they did leave 2 fans. Toilet really didn’t like to flush anything solid. At all. Brought to staff attention but didn’t appear to trigger any action.

The location of this property is near the British Museum so convenient to so many attractions and easily accessible via public transportation. It was a great value for the money and staff was very helpful, especially with directions! Would stay here again, but would suggest they spruce up the front room in check-in area - very poor condition and uninviting.

Booked a room in one of their hotels, but rooms were unavailable on our arrival, so we were moved down the block to another hotel (all owned by same people) immediately. We were told “all the rooms are the same”, but we found our room to be worn, & in need of upgrading. The mattress was like a stack of cardboard. Very sad that “all their rooms are the same”. Not recommended.

The Museum

The main advantage of the hotel is its convenience for visits to The British Museum. The hotel is not as old as some of the exhibits, but is more 'run down' than many of them. It is very 'tired' decoratively, not well-equipped (no bar or in-house restaurant), the 'kitchenette' amounts to a microwave and sink' with no real practicality. It is not well maintained (a cracked bathroom washbasin, and a cracked toilet seat, for example). We had a basement room, looking out on a dirty scrub of brambles and various weeds amid water-damaged walls. If money were spent, it could be a very pleasant building, but it has not been (yet). Only its position justifies staying here.

On checking in we were told room was in maintenance and we were moved to another hotel along the street ( The Beauchamp)
The check in agent was helpful and checked us in an hour early . We were upgraded to bigger room which was ok , nice bathroom but the whole tap mixer control fell off the wall! Room was dated .Quiet st and good location for British museum.

DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL

I booked a 5 night stay in a deluxe studio. Upon arrival, they told me my room was not available, and I would not be able to get into my room until check in the following day! They stuck me in a drafty basement single room at a sister hotel for the first night instead.

I’ve requested a refund for the night since the hotel could not provide anything near a comparable room to the one I had a reservation for, and the property refused to refund me!

Once I was able to check into the room I had reserved, that room was decent, but the hassle, stress, and lack of care and customer service confirms that I will never stay here again, and will warn anyone else not to stay here either.

Noises in the night

When I first got there I thought I would be in for a treat as room was lovely and big with a great view over gardens at rear overlooking large gardens of the property it backed onto. And room was spotless and quite lovely. However the noise from room above was horrendous. The floor above which was my ceiling had a lose metal water pipe that clanged really loud against something every time the person in the room above walked around. Which this person did so non stop till after 1.30am and then started again at 6am so I had virtually zero sleep. It really was a most disappointing stay as I was shattered next day with so little sleep. The noise was very loud! Shame because the room was delightful. I was on the first floor.

Great location!

We stayed here for the location, great access to the Underground, buses, and the West End. The breakfast was not included and too expensive. We tried the English breakfast one day and it was not worth the 24 pounds that they charged. Area was quiet. There was a serious lack of drawers, there wasn’t a dresser. The kitchenette was nice.

Room was a good size and clean overall. Great location with access to Underground station and bus stops just a few minutes' walk away. Also lots of dining and shopping options nearby. Front desk staff were friendly. Only negative was London was experiencing higher then usual temperatures and the room was quite warm. There was no A/C (as seems to be normal in London) and the window was hard to open. The fan supplied by the hotel was quite small.

Not sure how the hotel is rated 4 stars. The building is old with charm however the room is very warn and tired. The carpet had staining and rips and the curtains needed replacing. Everything just seemed like it had not been kept up with. Note this hotel does not have air conditioning. It was very warm with only one window to open, they did have fans. The location was good within walking distance of multiple metro lines.

Good location!

Hotel is in a great location. I love that there is space in front for a car to drop off (especially if you have luggage). The location feels safe - right by the British museum. The room was very comfortable. The elevator is a little small, but we managed okay. Please note there is no A/C.

It was a fabulous stay for one week.. The room was large, with everything we needed.. easily walkable to Soho and many other attractions.. lovely to come back to a quiet, charm filled street. We needed an iron with board, and staff were only too happy to oblige.

Check-in was with a trainee receptionist and therefore was a bit on the slow side. Employees were friendly. They do offer luggage storage which is great considering I had 5+ hours to wait before I could check-in. The room was large and spacious, but had no climate control. The other downside was the shower/tub. It is not practical for anyone with mobility issues or with a disability. I had great difficulty getting in and out. Good location, near 2 Underground stops. Close enough to St. Pancras Station for long distance trains. Neighborhood was safe with multiple dining options. The British Museum is right around the corner.

We stayed 3 nights. This was a very good “heritage” style hotel. Large room, updated bathroom and we really enjoyed having the use of the kitchenette in the room. Very quiet super central to most things. A 20 minute walk to the Soho theatre district, Royal British Museum is in your backyard and one block off a major thoroughfare. Comfortable bed. We would stay here again.

A fabulous property which offers more than its post suggests. I booked a double room with a kitchenette and it’s basically a suite! Huge windows, elegant drapes, places to sit. The street is quiet and the trees outside smell great. And having (basic) cooking facilities means I have saved a fortune in dining out. I would definitely come back here - thank you, Portland! Very comfy bed, too, I have slept like a log.

We were put in the “deluxe suite” with kitchenette in the basement of the hotel. The tv did not work, the stairs to get to our room were steep with no handrails and there was no plug to take a bath. The carpet and walls were worn and stained. The kitchenette was a tiny sink and small microwave. Very disappointing!

Despite it being one of the coldest periods so far our room was warm and cozy. It was large with heavy curtains to keep in the heat. We had everything we needed for an exceptionally comfortable stay.
The hotel is conveniently situated for Russell Square tube as well as walking distance to the British Museum, Covent Garden and Leicester Square. Definitely recommended.

Complicated - the hotel is basically multiple buildings and it’s time-consuming and confusing. I went to the Portland and was told I had to check in in the Clarendon. Then it turned out I was staying in the Clarendon. Breakfast (which I paid for) started so late (0800) that I couldn’t take it. No discount though. They said they’d leave me a ‘bag of fruit’ at reception the next morning. That never materialised. The room was a lovely size for central London but it was tired with peeling paint and wallpaper, fraying on the bedstead etc. There were no coffee making facilities or iron/ironing board in the room. Not good value at all for £203 a night.

Very kind, thoughtful , accommodating and helpful staff.
Excellent buffet breakfast. Vast choice. High quality offerings with fruit cheeses eggs and even gluten free options. Very good coffee.
Great neighborhood. Close to public transit.
Close to ymca for fitness.
I would definitely recommend and stay there again as well.

The stay and the room itself were good. The staff was also good. We found the location to be very good. We didn't know that it didn't have a/c, but that may be an England vs Canada thing. Also, the site said there were 'laundry facilities', but they had none. Fortunately, the Boswell laundromat was only 5 minutes walk away.

Very cute boutique hotel in a very handy area close to everything. Under renovatiins outside which meant workers right outside our window at 7am. Had to have windows open as no air conditioning and it was mid-20s outside. A small fan does not help. The backyard space was a mess but could be a very cute place to sit and have a coffee. The staff was lovely, everyone from front desk to cleaning staff.

A gem in the centre of London at affordable prices

I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the room - it was the suite with the little kitchenette. The windows opened over the garden, it was so nice to hear the sound of the birds singing.
The bed was firm but comfortable. There was lots of tea (including herbal), coffee, and milk available. Plus a small microwave if needed.
The bathroom was large and the water hot with a powerful shower. There were enough towels. The toiletries were particularly nice. They smelt expensive.
The staff on reception both when I arrived and the next morning when I left could not have been nicer.
And what a surprise... they gave me a complimentary breakfast! It was packed in a bag for collection in reception - juice, fruit, vegetarian sandwich (non-veg was available), yoghurt.
I think this is a great find for central London. The location is quiet yet close to Covent Garden and all amenities. I would definitely recommend this gem.

The London Inferno

Welcome to the Inferno. This four star hotel in the centre of London has no air conditioning. I repeat, this hotel has no air conditioning. We stayed there in the middle of a heatwave. I leave the rest to your imagination.

Other concerns. The hotel, which might be mistaken for a small independent, is in fact part of a chain. Our original booking was changed at short notice when we were not in position to seek a reasonably priced alternative.

We were promised, among other things a complimentary bottle of wine by way of compensation. This did not materialise. Altogether shoddy treatment and an unbearably uncomfortable couple of days.

Magnificent Rooms

Very nice hotel with spacious rooms which are very well furnished. The front door to the property is kept locked at all times which means that the hotel receptionist opens the door for you. The only minor gripes I had about the hotel was that breakfast was at a neighbouring sister hotel (only a couple of doors down) and the TV set in my room was quite dated with poor picture quality. Other than that the hotel is in a great location and I would certainly stay here again.

Nowhere comfortable to sit, though. I had a job meeting the next day and there was no place for me to sit and work or instead watch tv. The chair in the room was completely collapsed, it gave me back pain just by sitting in it.

This hotel is tucked away on a relatively quiet street in the midst of a very large, bustling city. The hotel is very close to the British Museum, a wide range of moderate and inexpensive restaurants, and at least two underground stations. The room was quiet and clean. The request for 1 twin bed resulted in a double bed with a firm mattress and lots of pillows. The room had a kitchenette (microwave oven, small fridge, small sink, electric water kettle) supplied with tea and coffee packets and Bisoff cookies -- very welcome after a long day on our feet. The bathroom was narrow but well supplied, clean and bright. One potential downside is using the shower or tub requires carefully stepping over the tub's very high side; with polished floor tiles and no wall mounted grab bars, this might be a risk for some. Meals are served next door at one of the \"sister\" hotels, which requires stepping outside. The hotel has an elevator. Check in was slow due to a computer issue and a staff trainee, however that was not indicative of the rest of the stay. I would stay here again.

Lovely greeting from staff, they were so friendly. The hotel is a little bit dated inside, but to be fair, that's reflected in the price.

Our room stank of cigarette smoke and it took 2 days of opening the window and an air freshener by the cleaning lady to get rid of it.

I would avoid basement room if you can because you are literally at street level and hear everything.

I would definately return though.

Curtains and bedspread ripped floors creaking inside and out window frames shaking in the wind shower broken can’t get in and out without endangering your life
4 appliances give relentless heat in the room with only a fan to cool opening a window was suggested to me but on the 1 st floor- not safe

Very Bad 4 Star

For a 4 Star, condition of the room was very poor. Furnitures were old and looks dusty and dirty. Check In took a while because we have to fill in details of all guest (whatever for I am not sure) and you would expect a 4 Star will not require you to do that personally. This hotel is probably the worst 4 Star I have stayed in in London. It is also the only 4 Star that doesn’t give complimentary bottle of water for first nite. We only stayed for one night and when asked for water was told it is only give to members of their loyalty programme! With that kind of condition really not sure who would want to be a member.

Don't stay there

Terrible experience in every possible way. Couldn't sleep all night. Complained twice and asked for refund and was told nothing can be done.

Good hotel in a great location

Nice hotel in a central location in London. The service was very friendly and helpful. The room was very small and the cable TV didn't work but otherwise a good option for London.

Close to the centre

Room was big and spacious. We stayed there as a family of 4 with one double bed and my two teenage sons had a very small and unconfortable sofa bed wich was very dissapointing since there would have been plenty of space for another bed. i had one of the worst sleeps at this hotel be ause we ended up 3 in a bed.
