The whole building felt neglected. The room numbers were in a random order which made finding the room difficult. I had an ensuite room, it smelled disgusting when I arrived and the toilet didn't flush properly so the ensuite smelled disgusting when I opened the door in the norning too. The window wasn't staying open properly and the radiator couldn't be turned down which made the room extremely hot. Other guests were slamming doors and running up and down stairs too.

The only positives were the price for a place in London and the ease of check in and check out. I think this could be a great property if a little more care was put into maintaining rooms.

The staff here were so lovely that I almost don’t want to comment on the property- the room was filthy, there actually wasn’t someone on the desk the whole time, the photos on here are not of the inside of the property, there’s no hot water… but the bed was clean, it was actually really quiet and the staff I did see were really helpful… would have been brilliant for one night, was ok for two nights- really would have been impossible beyond that

First room had a nauseating smell of either cheese/vinegar with stained bedding and carpets. We immediately requested a new room. However, the new room had a broken radiator (stuck on full power) and a window that would barely open. Whilst the second room wasn't pungent, it was far from comfortable or clean. Stained carpet, yellow mattress, dried vomit on outside of toilet etc. Entire place could do with a bit of TLC and servicing. Finally - the smoke alarm went off at 3am. Cannot fault the receptionist, who very quickly sorted our room swap. An acceptable place to stay if all you need is a bed and running water...

Disappointing Stay – Would Not Recommend

Where do I begin? The moment we stepped onto the hotel floor, it felt unstable—like one wrong move and you could fall through. Things only got worse from there. The bedroom was a letdown: the mattress felt like a pile of springs, making it impossible to get a good night's sleep. The room had a musty smell, with visible damp patches on the unpainted walls. The bathroom was tiny and cramped, and there was no night lamp—something I really need when sleeping somewhere unfamiliar.

To make matters worse, several sockets didn’t work, so we had to wake up during the night just to rotate devices for charging. Overall, it was a horrible experience in terms of comfort and upkeep.

The only saving grace was the location—close to Leicester Square and within walking distance of plenty of shops. But sadly, convenience doesn’t make up for the poor condition of the hotel.

Not fit for human habitation. Room was down a flight of disgusting dirty stairs in a basement. Room was filthy! Damaged walls, carpet in an appalling state, damp, smelly and honestly unsafe. I’ve seen reviews before where I’ve thought people just need to adjust their expectations of a cheap hotel but honestly this was the worst room I’ve ever seen. I arrived at 5pm on 21st October, quick check in. No ID required or at least did not ask for it. I was put in room 18, I was greeted with a small room, single bed and VERY VERY bad conditions. There was stains on the wall, the flooring had signs of water damage / damp and window sill was damaged and had signs of mould. I did not sleep at all due another guest coughing and a radio playing all night. The only positive about this hotel is the location and price. It is very close to Russel sqr tube station. The street is quiet.

Staying at the Thanet Hotel Annex was quite a disappointing and unsettling experience, especially since I was traveling with my family. To be clear, this has nothing to do with the staff — communication was good, and when I requested an extra pillow, the front desk agent responded promptly and kindly.

However, the condition of the room was far below expectations. The beds were uncomfortable, the shower was extremely small, and I was genuinely concerned about possible mold in the bathroom. It’s definitely not the standard I’m used to.

My stay there is one I’d rather forget. Honestly, I wasn’t planning to write a review, but I felt it was important to share this in case someone else reads it before booking — because if I had, I wouldn’t have proceeded.

The only positive aspect was the location — its convenience and proximity to the university were the main reasons I chose it. Still, that experience of putting my family, especially my son, through such conditions is something I pray never happens again, by the grace of God.

Great central location and a nice helpful gentleman at reception are the only positives. I booked this hotel very last minute and failed to read any reviews which is my bad ! We booked a twin room with shared facilities and were genuinely horrified when we arrived. The room was genuinely one of the worst rooms I’ve ever stayed in in my whole life. One of the beds was broken with springs almost prodruding through the mattress, sheets were dirty. the shared facilities were so filthy with hair and what appeared to be pubic hair on the shower floor we simply could not use them. A guest in a neighbouring room kept knocking our door and generally made us feel very uncomfortable. The hotel is generally in a state of disrepair and desperately requires renovating! I’m very non confrontational but in hindsight I really should have said something about the condition of the room. We paid to upgrade to an en-suite room the next morning for the remainder of our stay. The new room was basic 2 beds and a bathroom with no additional amenities and in a general state of disrepair but we were very grateful to be out of the original room. During our stay a very tragic event happened. Which I’m sure was deeply distressing and upsetting for all the staff. Due to the location of our room we were very much unknowingly exposed to it with out any sort of warning. My Partner had been at reception a short while before to ask for a hairdryer so it was known what room we were in. I feel we should h

Had to pay £5.00 to leave my case with the reception but the owner did explain why but an additional cost.

Room was in the basement - do not use. It was very basic, just a bed and a tiny portable style toilet sink and shower. Shower took ages to warm up. Room was noisy from early hours in the morning could hear staff banging around. Paint on the walls was marked with paint missing in some areas. No tea/coffee facilities and no fridge.

Probably the dingiest, grottiest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. The room was like a scene from Orwell’s 1984, including what appeared to be a dried blood stain (or was it faeces?) on the ancient, filthy curtains. The shared bathroom was grimy, with dried excrement stuck to the toilet bowl. The cheap handwash in the room was obviously diluted! While staff were friendly and polite, and the linen and towels at least appeared clean, that is really the least I would expect from any hotel. It hardly makes up for the otherwise almost comically disgusting accommodation. Frankly, I feel ripped off - I want my money back!

Bare minimum of you have no other choice

Heating does not turn off, so it's essentialy a sauna. Window only opens a tiny bit. There was mystery water on the bathroom floor at all times, sometimes more, sometimes less, but always water.
Stains and smudges on the walls, dust and mould along all surfaces. Toiler felt like it was close to falling off the wall. Mattess very spring-forward and extremely hard uncomfortable pillows. No kettle or cups in room. Only 1 working plug socket.

The staff working at the desk were very nice, and the central location is perfect. But the hotel was in a state of disrepair. There was a problem with the toilet, where it made a very loud noise for about 10 mins after being flushed. The shower appeared to be broken and there was a piece of cardboard hammered into the wall (assumedly to cover a hole).

As a solo female, older traveller I have stayed in a variety of places and am not too fussy so long as things are clean and the premises are safe.
Without doubt, this is the filthiest place I have ever stayed.
Where do I start?
Mould, filth in the crevises, skirting, walls,. The wardrobe doors SCREWED shut, the bedlights not working, the fan, which did not reach the powerpoint, had about a years worh of dust, to flush the toilet I had yo actually leave the bsthroom and reach over, the curtains were cut-off pieces of frayed mismatched material, The ceiling had dark patches of I know not what, flaking paint around the wooken windows, the bathroom appeated to be a plonked-in pre-fabricated plastic surround wnhich moved whenever I enyered the bathroom. Broken off screws which once held a mirror.
But good hotwater in the shower.
Stsirwells had loose threadbare varpet snd uneven rickerty boards.
Heaters throughout the builing were on so high it felt like a sauna, but did not work in yhe bedroom as the bed was pushed hard against it.
No wifi out of the Reception area.No lift, bery precarious stairs. I canno believe this places was passed by the Health Dept.
Oh, no cups, no kettle, but a dpider dropped from somewhere onto the bed.

The staff were friendly and helpful and couldn't be faulted. Reception areas were clean, tidy and comfortable. Shared bathroom was clean, as was bedding.

The stay was let down by the condition of the allocated room. The bed mattress was uncomfortable, the sink in the room unusable and dirty. The room was noisy from footfall above. The room is in desperate need to refurbishment, with an ill fitting curtain pole, fraying curtains, worn carpet, peeling/chipped paint and water leak marks on the ceiling that have had poor attempts at painting over. I have seen better hostel rooms. The room did not marry up with images online used to advertise the hotel.

You get what you pay for. The price was good by London standards and the neighborhood, right by the British Museum, is fine. But the hotel is shabby. My room had a dirty bathroom with a chipped, stained sink, no bathroom amenities except a nearly empty bottle of soap, one bath towel per person (no hand towels or washcloths), no drinking glass, no wastebasket or anything else. Hot water began flowing in the shower about 3-4 minutes after I turned it on.

One light bulb was burned out in the ceiling fixture and there was no lamp for the beaten-up desk (I had to move rooms to get a desk at all). A sagging bed, iron clothes rack directly over the head of one bed, spotty internet (front desk said the system is new and still being adjusted), tiny TV with no sign of a remote control, windows that stuck, flimsy door lock (I don't think a woman would be comfortable with that).

The people at the desk were kind. At my request, they got me a drinking glass (a glass champagne flute, of all things), more liquid soap, and a wastebasket. I imagine they could have rustled up a TV remote if I'd wanted it.

For a single person doing business on a budget in London I guess it's OK (assuming the internet improves). Anyone looking for real comfort, or on a pleasure trip where they'll spend any amount of time in the room, won't find much pleasure here.

The beds had hairs in , the shower had tape around it could not use bathroom dirty so had to use shared bathroom there was pubic hair everywhere used condom .
Carpet was disgusting the room was not clean.
Check in the staff member was looking at me as if I didn’t book the hotel and also asked for my passport number. Yet I have stayed I. Other hotels in London and they have never asked this as I like in uk . I would like a refund for this stay as we wher four women that stayed and did not feel safe staying in this hotel and the quality was nasty not worth the amount we paid for one nigh it was horrible as one of the girls said she wouldn’t offer it to a rat. That was what she expressed. Will not stay again

Good points: Twin room with a shared toilet and bathroom - perfect for 2 people who aren't a couple. Room was clean and door lock was secure. Staff member on 24/7 reception desk was polite and helpful - just limited by the hotels lack of facilities. Fairly cheap by London standards, fantastic central location a block away from the British Museum. Walking distance from King's Cross and St Pancras train stations.

Bad points : No place to refill water bottles in hotel - a cheap easy improvement to make? Towel rail in room falling off wall. Shower room was out of order so had to use shared bathroom on different floor - this was clean but would of benefited from limescale being removed. Shared toilets were tiny - toilet seat not fully secured to toilet. Very thin walls with no sound proofing, heard people watching videos on their phone, talking, doors closing etc. Corridors and room could all do with new paint.

Presumably most of the above problems are related to it being a cheap hotel and the owners therefore having little capital to make improvements

Not recommended to any children to go there. The building is very old, smell horriblely and not feel safe or comfortable. Only thing we chosed to stay there over night, checked out at 4 am, because it is close to British Museum. It is not worth for £150 for one night.

This was a last minute stay so we were limited for low cost options, but this was terrible, we only had the option to book a room with a shared bathroom, when we checked in we were told "good news" we've got a room with an ensuite. We got to the room and it was dirty and dingy but did have a shower, as it was 10pm by this point we were getting showered and changed for bed when there was a knock on the door, the guy from reception said we could no longer have that room and needed to move! I explained my husband was in the shower and I wasn't dressed, he said he'd come back in 10mins!
We then got packed back up again and moved to a room with a shared bathroom, again it was dingy and dirty, the 2 chairs in the room were both broken, the wardrobe had no handles on it, the mattress was cheap and uncomfortable. There were 2 shared bathrooms for the floor of around 7 rooms, one of the toilets was out of order and the other was dirty, shower was disgusting with the dirty trap exposed.
There was noise until about 2am with doors banging echoing through the building.

The room was not a great room. Overgrown trees coming through windows. Staff were not helpful tv didnt work mould all over the shower curtain

As a basic place to lay one's head (especially coming in from Soho in the early hours), it's adequate, well-placed and excellent value for the location. The bed was comfortable, and staff friendly and helpful.
The facilities are basic and non-suite, and the shower and toilet in the corridor a bit pokey. The basin in my room had a very low-pressure water supply, but just about adequate to clean the teeth.
I'd certainly use it as a base again, though at my age (and especially after a night of jazz and caipirinhas), I maybe should pay a bit more for en suite next time!

Location!!

We stayed here for 3 nights. At first, I was a little nervous but it ended up being a good trip. The two gentlemen who work at the front are friendly and attentive. They were able to hold our luggage when we arrived early and were always kind when I needed something. We did stay at one of their family rooms with a private bathroom in the ground level. The state of the room can be improved and is quite quirky. The carpet, walls, and fixture are aged. The curtains couldn’t be drawn all the way and would recommend an eye cover. The beds were actually not bad and found them to be comfortable after a long day of walking. The linens and towels were clean. The small 3 piece combo shower was adequate. The shower had good pressure and was warm! The toilet was really annoying though cause it took a long time to refill to flush. I wish there were more hooks in the bathroom. I would recommend bringing slippers/thongs as the bathroom floor gets wet and slippery. There was a small heat wave during our stay. The room gets pretty stuffy and hot but they were able to get us a fan which helped. I would only recommend this place if you’re on a budget and want to stay at a prime location. It’s a good stay if all you need is a place to sleep and shower.

Heating was left on and was unbearable with no way of turning off directly in the room, even after speaking to the front desk. Unclean, very noisy from other guests slamming doors at all hours, en-suite was tiny, smaller than a caravan toilet/shower. Not worth the money.

Not a place for a long term stay in luxury. Basic room hostel. Had en suite bathroom and private room. Decent place for an overnight bed. Came up from Paris for a show. Was good and convenient. Do not ask desk to call you a cab. They will send a car service for cash and I didn't trust that. Walked down a couple of streets and hailed a cab. Easy peasy.

I’ve done my night and reported everything that was broken or missing to reception staff, whose fault isn’t theirs. The sheets and towels were clean, the tv remote batteries had leaked so didn’t work, no plug, no shower curtain, no glass, just one window curtain, noisy £99 wasted - pay more for a real hotel!

The room was very basic with an en suite that looked like it had been lifted from a caravan. No wifi in the room, no drinking water either. There was mould around the bathroom door and the single pane sash window let in the noise. Overall a very cheap room but you get what you pay for.

I had the misfortune of staying at this hotel, and it was an absolute nightmare. The pictures online are a complete fabrication; they bear no resemblance to the grim reality. The rooms lacked private toilets, forcing guests to share a single filthy public restroom with ten other rooms. The hygiene situation was appalling, with a pervasive smell of mold that made it nearly impossible to breathe. After just one night in these conditions, I fell seriously ill. This place is a health hazard and should be avoided at all costs! HOTEL STAFF VERY RUDE!!

Felt absolutely catfished by this property! Would not recommend. Room looked nothing like the images. We were directed to a room in the basement which felt more like a prison cell than a hotel room. The room was poorly equipped and didn’t even have glasses for drinking water. There was plaster and paint peeling on the walls, carpets torn and the door had previously been kicked from the inside. No sound proofing between our room and the corridor. The en-suite was a unit that looked like a shower/toilet in a caravan.

The area is lovely, but the room was absolutely horrible and overpriced. It is the quality of hotel is comparable to a cheap hostel - not what you would expect for a hotel that is in such a lovely area of London.
