Rooms are lovely as are the staff. Good value for money. £100 deposit which we weren’t aware of, please prepare for that if you haven’t a lot to spend.
Stair case was crazy but entertaining after a few drinks.

Staff was friendly and helpful but this is the only thing that was good. We had extensive mold in the first room which made us sick the first night (no one is at the hotel from 11pm-7am) so we couldn’t switch rooms the first night and they moved us to a new room the second night and we have discovered two blood stains on our sheets and more mold

You could hear all the neighbors from the room. Everyone walking upstairs to what they were doing in their rooms. I didn’t sleep the two nights I was there. Other than that, very nice staff and great location

The hotel was not what expected from looking at the photos on hotels.com. The photos must have been from a room that was recently decorated, nothing like the room we were given.

The room was in the attic up extremely steep stairs (which we did expect), when we entered the room the windows were wide open, the reason for which came apparent after the first shower. Water ran out of the shower room into the bedroom, the drains stunk and you can see visible rot on the wooden windows. The steam took a very long time to dissipate. This highlighted other visible signs of damp.

Really disappointed considering the cost of the room for 2 nights.

Morning staff was engaged and good, afternoon staff seemed disinterested in her work. Room was ok. We were on the back side of the building so room was quiet. Very steep spiral stairs to navigate with luggage so be prepared. We were there the night of Kings Day so very busy everywhere and I am unable to judge area because of this.

Location was good, easy to walk anywhere we needed. Staff were friendly.

There was the previous tenants toothpaste in the sink and paper in the toilet, which gave us an uneasy feeling, as well as issues with the lights, very damp bathroom etc. Overall, it was a convenient location but not the best stay.

We were disappointed in the staff’s friendliness and customer service. Rarely did the desk clerks acknowledge our entrance or exit. The hotel is small and you walk right into the front desk but the staff would often not even look up from their phones. Several issues in the room with broken light switch as well as a lack of storage. No drawers to speak of. Disappointed given the cost.

I enjoyed my stay at the Quentin Hotel. The location was great and close to many shops, restaurants, bars, and easily accessible for public transit. Check in was promptly at 3PM as mentioned on the website, not earlier. However, they allowed me to drop my belongings off prior to that so i could explore the city. My room was just as expected. Only word of caution (not an issue) but the stairs were steep, and the stairs in my room were even more steep. It was particularly warm (75/80 Fahrenheit) and didn’t think the lack of A/C was an issue, i just opened the window and turned on the fan that was provided by the hotel. I would stay here again.

The rooms were not clean, everything was very old, stained and dusty.
The windows were disgusting and there were ladybugs in the room, sticking to the window or one dead in bed underneath the pillow.

Crazy that they ask a €100 deposit, for what? :/ I hope to get it back soon.

The area is good as it is very central and next to Leidseplein.

Disappointing Stay

We felt like it didn’t quite live up to what we expected by looking at the photo’s.

The staircase is very dangerous. You could only use the stairs if very fit. My partner has a knee injury and struggled every time we went up or down. I hurt the back of my legs when walking down due to the shape of the narrow step.

Upon arrival, we were told our room was on the 3rd floor, which only had rooms 17 & 18 and ours was 34, so had to struggle up and down an extra set of stairs unnecessarily.

We eventually arrived in our room to find neither of the key cards was working, so had to struggle back down the stairs to reception and back up again with a working set of keys.

Upon arrival in our room, we found the room was very old and needed a lot of work. The windows had mould and bad condensation and clearly kept out no noise from the busy street.

The ceiling is cracking and skirting boards peeling off.

The bed mattress is old and has multiple mattresses layered to cover the bad ones. The bed was still uncomfortable and offered no support and not workable for 2ppl as you both fell towards the centre of the bed.

The bathroom mirror was unusable as it is above your head on the slanted ceiling.

Lastly, we were without any hand soap and shower products, so I had to request these from reception and then only receive

This location was just amazing!
It is centrally located to most all iconic landmarks & sights.
The neighborhood was well lit, easily accessible and we felt very secure & safe.

The Host/Receptionist’s could not have been nicer or any more accommodating to/for us.
Always responds quickly & kindly and made us feel we had known them our entire lives.

I would recommend this location for all these reasons & the fact it was extremely clean-spotless!
The bedding, towels and amenities were above as described on their website.
For so many more reasons that won’t allow here, I would recommend this to all my friends, Family and fellow Travelers!

Good location but not clean

Great location short walk to museums, attractions and transport links. Lots of places to eat near by as well.

On checking in was given one room that had a thick layer of dust on walk and head board, sweet wrapper in a light fitting and an unpleasant smell in the bathroom.
We were offers another room that we were allowed to see briefly and accepted but this was not much better. All the blinds in the room had a thick layer of dust on them, there was a jar with a light and dead plant in it, a kettle full of stagnant water and dead flies. The air vent was full of dust.

On check out we requested to use the bag store we were told about at check-in and saw others getting their bags out of a room in the corridor. Only to be told to leave our bags in reception under a bar by the door as the guy would be on the desk all day and would keep an eye on them. Which we didn’t feel comfortable doing.

Lovely staff, but average hotel

We were put in the basement bedroom. The windows were very difficult to close, and the stairs down to the basement are very steep. The room was boiling hot and didn’t feel safe to leave the window open overnight because the window opens onto a fire escape of the building next door. Only one of the lights worked, the bathroom smelt very damp, and the fridge was dirty. The lovely receptionist brought us an extra fan, however couldn’t change our room. The bed was quite comfortable, we got fresh towels every day, and it was situated in a pretty good location. I didn’t see any other rooms, but I wouldn’t stay here again

Location is really very center and middle of everything. However, when we arrived at 14.15 pm , even though the room was ready, the lady on the reception asked 10 euro for early check in. So i waited 45 minutes hour outside. The stairs are very narrow and very difficult to walk up but in general thats a good option for the price

The room itself was ok, however, not very spacious. The toilet is terribly made, the sink doesn’t make sense as it’s almost impossible to use with the sink tap poking out too much, it’s impossible to wash your face or use without water splashing everywhere.

Loved my stay!

I was so scared to stay here when I saw the reviews but it was actually so lovely! First off the staff were the nicest most accommodating people ever, I only talked to two of the girls on reception and one of the cleaners but they were great! We had a room with a private bathroom and everything was perfect. The window was a bit had to open we had to put a bin under it to hold it but you have to recognise that it is an old building in Amsterdam. The hotel is also smack dab in the middle of where you want to be making it perfect! I would stay here again 100%

Good location for young party people

So this place is a great location. We enjoyed being where we were but did not love our stay at the hotel. We were put on the 3rd floor and it was about 95 degrees. The stairs were a trip to get up almost like climbing a ladder. So we asked for a fan at least to help with how hot it was so we could sleep and they kept telling us oh yes we will and we had to ask about 4 times and they never got one for us. So the next day we asked to be moved to a lower level so it wouldn’t be as hot. We had to ask for that about 3 times and finally before our second night they got us a lower room which we really appreciated. But when we went to bed at about 1am the people above us partied and made so much noise till 6am. Not cool. This place is for young party kids.

I stayed in Amsterdam for 2 nights at the Quentin Hotel Golden Bear. The staff were lovely and made me feel comfortable. The hotel is in a great location, Next door there is a coffee shop named The Dolphins would highly recommended as it has reasonable prices and right at your door step! The hotel do charge you a tax at arrival and also take a €100 deposit which is refundable once you checkout. Check in from 3pm and check out at 11am. The room was pretty basic with its own private shower room and toilet. Around about a 15 min walk to the main part of the city centre. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend!!

Great location to get around and plenty of bars, restaurants and shops nearby. Room was clean, yes it’s small but every hotel room we’ve stayed in Amsterdam is small. It’s the nature of the buildings which are all generally tall and narrow. Plus how much time are you going to spend in there?! We were not there one night but we would definitely stay again.

We didn’t like that our room was on the -1 floor and we heard everything on the room on the floor 0 that was on top of ours.

Overall bad experience, music playing from 8pm-3am Thursday to Sunday constantly beside my room on first floor coming from coffee shop which led to a bad sleep,

Hotel room walls were scruffy needs painting, bathroom was too small and so was the shower curtain which led to flooding in the bathroom.

Small pillows (couch pillows), bed sheets weren’t changed prior to arrival.

Tough stairs to climb hard to get bags and suitcases up, trouble with card for entering our room and hotel.

Only thing that was good was central to everything eg. Museums, trams, shops and restaurants.

An honest review: depends on break you’re wanting

For a budget hotel, this place is acceptable but could improve on cleanliness. Having read reviews I was quite worried, however, some of the complaints I think are unjustified. The steps are steep - but that’s the Netherlands for you! The hallways and stairs really do need replacing/ cleaning as the corridors are grubby. All reception staff were lovely, friendly and happy to help with anything. The room was clean, basic and with a pretty rough finish, but tbh, we were going to see the city, not spend time in a luxury room: If you want that, pay for the Waldorf Astoria! Towels were changed and bed made daily and it was clean which was all I cared about.
By far the best thing about this place is the location. Situated on Kerkstraat, it’s walking distance to the bustling Vijzelgraacht with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Tram system gets you further afield, but the flower markets of Bloemenmarkt and the busy Mundtplein are all within walking distance. I looked for loads of accommodation prior to booking the Quentin Golden Bear, and for the price, you can’t stay anywhere near as central as you can here. So it really depends on the break you’re looking for as to whether to stay here or not. But all in all, we had a positive experience. Sometimes I think people just want it all for a budget price!

The photos do not match the location! The rooms are very small and the mattress is horrible, it only has two small pillows! You make the reservation and they put you in the room they decide! There are several tiny and dangerous stairs! The bathrooms smell like sewage! We ran out of toilet paper and there was no one to ask because no one stays overnight! Towels are very old! But the location is perfect!

My only two faults were that is was quite loud outside until 4am ish and then also the walls are fairly thin so you can hear people talking, moving around in the hotel too. Also, there was a funny smell within the bathroom but was easily resolved.

This is not a hotel, it’s a hostel. The stairs are dangerously steep and the rooms are poorly maintained. Dirty bedding, broken blinds, no curtains, dirty carpets. But to add insult to injury, no coffee in rooms. For £200 I expect coffee but, no worries, I’ll wait for breakfast -not! Breakfast is served at a different location ten minutes walk away. The only positive was the chap who checked us in at 2am. Tried his best even though he had never been to this location before!

If you care about the small things a larger hotel can offer, then don't book this hotel. Hotel was not flexible with early check-in. I came from a long 11 hour flight and those flights typically get in in the morning. I got to the hotel after lunch and they said its a bit too early to check-in. They made no attempt to accommodate me. They made no attempt to check if the room was ready. I asked them when I should come back and the front desk person simply said \"3pm\".

I asked them some basic questions about where I could buy certain things in the area. Typical travel stuff. Front desk person didn't seem interested.

The Dutch stairs are no-joke narrow. The stairs for this hotel was like a ladder. Don't bring heavy luggage here.

Rooms are small. Bed wasn't that comfortable. Location is close to Leidsplein tram, one upside. Still a walk through cobbled streets is required. Their room numbering system is not consistent. You have to ask the front desk person where your room is exactly. It's not straightforward.

The walls of this hotel are thin. You can hear the neighboring rooms. Muffled but loud enough to not notice. If you don't care where you stay and just need a place to sleep then book this hotel. If you want somewhere more convenient and comfortable, book elsewhere.

Let’s start with the best, location. The hotel is in a great location and walkable to everywhere in central Amsterdam.

And for the rest, I read the reviews prior to booking and they were right. The place is full, colorless, cold (and I could not get much warmth from the heaters). The wifi doesn’t reach the rooms and that was useless. The bathroom is so small you barely fit and don’t look too close into the shower because it hasn’t been cleaned under the drainage area for such a long time. The saving grace was the the water was hot and the over head rain shower had great flow.

If your a big person, you are not going to fit on the toilet seat. Your knees touch the sink.

My bedding (comforter) was stained and I ended up washing some spots off with a face cloth, soap and water. The pillows are tiny and inadequate for a double, queen bed. The overall room is small with barely room to move around.

In a word, “don’t”.

Would not recommend Quentin Hotel Golden Bear

The Hotel Quentin Golden Bear in Amsterdam is dirty, dingy and depressing. We did not know this hotel but we liked the location and it was listed on hotels.com. To get to the rooms you have to scale very step stairs with dirty black sag carpet, there is no elevator. The stairs are dangerous more so then what you read in the reviews. The odor in the room was so bad I could not stay in the room. One dim ceiling light, very dark. There was no closet to hang close or shelves. My room had a crack in the window with cold air coming in. The sheets were damp. I booked a luxury double room. This was not luxury only disgusting. The photos and description on hotels.com are not accurate. The other room had a surprise in the toilet. We quickly learned there are no employees at the hotel full time. The Wifi did not work, we were told to go next door to a cafe. We told the man at the front we could not stay under these conditions. The man at the front desk was leaving he only showed up to check us in. He had no idea when the manager would show up. We have disputed our charge. Hotels.com HAS NOT been helpful to resolve the problem. I emailed the hotel but they do not respond. Hotels.com has called the hotel many times but no one answers. Hotels.com does nothing. I wrote a letter to the CEO of hotels.com but no respond. I have asked to talk to a supervisor but they won't put you through nor do they call back. We are very upset with hotels.com for not helping to resolve the problem. UNHAPPY

Seems very “bait and switch” went to the hotel I thought I booked, which was lovely, was told at the counter that my booking was for another location, I went to said location and all of the walls were marked with black marks, tiny room, safe had no key, no volume on tv.

It’s Fine if you don’t care about where you’re staying, however if you want a nice room, I’d avoid.

Will add easy 10/15 minute walk into centre and a coffee shop next door, would recommend for younger traveller like students, who want their own space over a shared Hostel.

I stayed at the Quentin Hotel Golden Bear for my first trip to Amsterdam. The room itself, a sort of loft room on 3rd floor. Very charming. Nice and clean with full bathroom in room. Staff was friendly enough, helpful for a first timer. Location of hotel was fantastic, central enough to walk to many tourist places, plenty offers, restaurants, shopping, etc. My only comment was the steps in hotel. very steep...maybe that's a Europe thing, but the steps to the room were basically climbing a ladder. Not very easy with luggage. But all in all. cool place.

the only good thing about the hotel is the location. When we arrived the english woman (receptionist) rarely looked at us. she was rude and really annoyed from the customers. the sheets were wet when we arrived (probably because they left the window open for hours before we arrived). The stairs are deffo nothing for elderly people or kids. no elevator. there was always noise from the inside and outside. we wouldn‘t recommend it.

It’s cheap I’ll give you that. Smallest room ever. And yes - I’ve stayed in “single rooms” in Europe before. No A/C so sleep with the window open and listen to all the city noise and get bug bites. Hear everything your neighbor is doing. And don’t even get me started on “breakfast”. I’m all for saving a dollar - but not here. Clean and location. Only thing going for it.
