I just think it was significantly over priced for the provided room. The bed was one of the most uncomfortable hard cheap mattresses I've been on. Loud and squeaky. The ac unit was loud. Upstairs guests loud, but that's not really a hotel issue. Fees were crazy and not listed prior. 60$ for parking plus 60$ for amenities that you don't even use. I would go to the ritz next time.

The room was beautiful, and the hotel is in a great location. We got an early check-in, always nice. Lots of restaurants in the area. Easy walk to the wharf and beach. Going the opposite direction on State St., you come to the busy area of State St. Further on down (10 min. drive), you come to lower State St. with a calmer vibe of restaurants and shops. Wish we had been able to stay longer.

This hotel truly sucked. The service was poor, restaurant & bar closed on a holiday weekend. Had to order room service that didn’t have a full bar - ordered $100 champagne that was served in a plastic pitcher with no top and warm. Waiter didn’t even pour for us. Took 30 min to receive towels at the pool and security failed to recognize us as guests and tried to deny us entry.


$1200 per night? Sucked really badly!

Gabby (manager) and the rest of her staff did everything to make our 10th wedding anniversary something special. I truly plan on making this trip to SB and staying at Hotel Californian an annual trip.

The proximity to the beach was incredible. The rooftop pool has an incredible view. I took my time selecting a hotel that would make this a special weekend. And there was definitely some concern prior to arriving that my expectations would not be met. But with Gabby’s guidance, our stay felt special and classy. I would highly recommend staying here.

We arrived and had requested early check-in prior to arrival. We got to the hotel around 1240 and I know early check-in’s are not guaranteed but the lady at the front desk told us that we will be able to check in very soon, and I mean very soon. We said no problem and went to have some lunch and then came backa couple of hours later and the room is still not ready.

We paid $1400 for our room and I would not say this was a $1400/night experience. First the staff forgot to tell us our room was ready. Then I went to use the shower and it had dirt on the wall and the shower curtain so our $1400/night room clearly had not been cleaned. Lastly we had appointments at the spa. There were no amenities and we were supposed to have specialized treatments but just ended up with basic massages. Save your money and go to the Ritz.

My wife and I came here for our one year anniversary. This is the best hotel I've ever stayed in. I once stayed in a Ritz Carlton and our stay here was far superior with beauty and amazing costumer service. We will be back. This is a beautiful property and staff were very friendly. Check in was great and and the room was ready upon arrival. The decor is fabulous and the bathroom and bed a dream! Room service was quick, hot and delicious! The only negative is the lack of any stores in the area so come stocked if you want cheaper options than those provided in the mini bar. There are a million restaurants in and around the hotel so you will not lack dining options.

Weekend in Santa Barbara

Beautiful, spacious and clean room. Hotel location is perfect -- a block to the beach and great restaurants and bars within feet of the hotel plus, plenty more to choose from by simply walking up State Street. The Goat Tree restaurant which is part of the hotel was excellent.

Disappointing service standard-won't return

This property is advertised as 5 star and charges prices to match. Our experience was average at best. We are well traveled. The customer service was lacking and while friendly, did not feel professional. Too laid back and unattentive. We stayed in the main building and so had to walk across State street to use the pool. The pool and hot tub area were littered with trash and not picked up regularly. There was a strong sewage smell our entire stay, which may be out of their control, but certainly is not disclosed. Delayed response (the next day) in cleaning up pool area after we brought it to their attention. When we booked, we had messaged with staff who had planned a special surprise for my spouse in our room upon check-in. They forgot this and so we had to call down for it. There was no info given on how to procure filtered water and ice. No water bottles were in our room upon check-in. We received a different room than what we booked online. No one greeted us as we entered or exited the hotel, or asked how our stay was going and if we needed anything. In-room dining closes at 8pm and their restaurants have limited hours other than the Goat tree. The only positive for us was the proximity to the Funk Zone. We would not stay here again.

The staff gave you 0 information on the property when you checked in for amenities etc.. Stay at the Harbor View Inn across the street but actually as close to the beach as you can get for 1/3 the cost instead. Hopefully the 4 Seasons will reopen. That beach has all of the best restaurants.

Beautiful hotel but not worth the 800 dollar a night price tag. The pool is tiny and no breakfast included in the price tag. I think it’s a bit too much for a two queen room.

Overall lovely hotel

Overall we loved this hotel- we only had one experience not so favorable-my husband purchased several post cards, hopeful to mail them to a few family members-we went to the front desk to see if there were any stamps that we could purchase- a very young female reception desk attendee told us that they could mail the postcards, but did not offer to help us find stamps. We ended up finding out from a staff member at Santa Barbara Winery that the local visitor centers sell stamps. It would have taken so little effort for the female reception to offer this service to us- otherwise all was great- the little extra service would have really impressed us-

We enjoyed our stay. We had a close view of the 4th of July fireworks from our balcony. There are many restaurant choices right down stairs. Only one block from the beach and pier. The Nespresso shots were something different.

We spent 3 nights at hotel California. The most horrible thing is that the water is yellow due to ageing water pipe. And the front desk just explained as if it’s normal. And the solution provided was : turn on the tap for 10 mins, the colour will become light. I hope I can share the video of picture here for your reference.

If you want to be a tourist in Santa Barbara, this is the spot. Walking distance to wharf, beach, \"Funk Zone\" and great dining. The staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. The hotel itself is a great taste of history and excellent amenities.
