I do not recommend this hotel.
The hotel advertises included parking, but I had to leave my car parked on the street. Check-in was also inconvenient because I had to go to a different hotel to complete the process.
The room was very outdated and poorly maintained. The bathroom looked so worn out that I felt uncomfortable using it, and the jacuzzi tub appeared old and unclean.
The worst part of my stay happened at checkout. I arrived around 11:30 PM and paid over $400 for one night. The next day I accidentally overslept. Instead of receiving a polite call or knock, staff woke me up by shouting questions about who I was and what I was doing there. After identifying myself, I was told I would be charged a $100 late checkout fee.
I apologized and immediately left the room. The employee told me I could go, leading me to believe the fee would be waived, but the $100 charge still appeared on my account.
When I questioned the charge, I was told staff approached me that way because they did not know whether I was a homeless person who had entered the room illegally. I found that explanation offensive and completely unprofessional.
To make matters worse, Expedia’s messages stated a 12 PM checkout, while staff insisted checkout was at 11 AM.
For the price, I expected much better conditions, communication, and customer service. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I have had.

Location was amazing.

Bathroom was dirty, moldy and unventilated and the room was not ready by the promised time.

Front desk lady was rude because I didn’t fill in a form that was texted to me in the middle of my 5 hour drive to Santa Barbara. If a form was required it should have been sent 24 hours earlier, not when people are actively traveling.

Maintenance man was very nice and helpful.
We didn’t know how to check in, there was no signage saying that the registration desk was at a neighboring hotel and thankfully he walked us over to check in. He salvaged what started out as a crappy experience.

I was not aware while booking that this was owned by a neighboring property, so the lobby area for check in and breakfast was in a separate building we had to walk to. Also the room was much smaller and a tight squeeze compared to what is perceived from the pictures. Shower could have used an update. Lastly, the lighting in the main room was very dim. Other than that, on the positive side we really enjoyed the free wine tasting nightly and the distance to the beach and other in-town attractions were an amazing feature. The staff was polite. I would stay here again but not with the entire family due to size.

This place has incredible potential given the location, but it is severely overpriced for what you actually get.

First and foremost, keep a close eye on your credit card. The hotel tacked on an unauthorized, \"significant\" charge after checkout. When I called, they claimed the Expedia rate was too low, so they just helped themselves to the incidental card I provided at check-in. The manager never called me back, but thankfully Expedia agreed it was completely shady and refunded me.

As for the actual stay:

The \"Service\": Our room was never serviced after the first night. Since there are no phones in the room, I had to physically walk to the lobby for fresh towels, where I overheard other guests complaining about the exact same issue.

The Room: Outdated, tacky, and features a tiny vanity. The toilet paper didn't even have a holder—it just sat on top of the tank.

The Vibe: Incredibly cluttered. Walking through the property feels like navigating an antique shop or a crowded garage sale. No in-room coffee makers, parking is limited, and the front desk is rarely staffed.

Amenities: The hot tub was so cloudy and poorly maintained that we hard-passed. Breakfast is a bare-minimum continental spread with zero proteins or eggs.

It is absolute madness that this place costs half the nightly rate of the Hotel Californian. Do yourself a favor: gladly pay double to stay there for 100 times the aesthetic, service, and accommodations.

The room was very dated, no closet, no dresser, bathrooms dirty and old. The AC didn’t work so the room was stuffy.

A lady night desk person gave us another room for 1 night but we couldn’t stay because it was booked the next day. They did not fix the AC in the other room, when we went back.

To check in, amenities needs or questions you had walk half block to another hotel Villa something.. no room phones to call front desk.

Paid nearly $1000 and not what I expected for this amount of money. I guess you pay for the view and location.

I asked for my room to be serviced it was not. I saw housekeeping and asked her and she didn’t understand what I said. I had to speak to her in Spanish and advised her that the door tag was put on door earlier this morning for housekeeping and we needed the service. She did it right then and there while we waited outside.

I would not book this again.

This establishment's primary advantage is its location, which is exceptional. While the amenities, breakfast, and service are comparable to those found in other hotels, the price point would be difficult to justify were it not for the prime location. However, the location was precisely what we were looking for, and it fully met our expectations.

Do not under any circumstances stay here. This place completely scammed us out of $500. Through Expedia, the ad stated \"ocean view\" for the room. Not all rooms on the ad advertised ocean view so I chose the one that said it had the view. The only rate available was non-refundable, but as we would be arriving in an hour, I thought that was not a risk. BIG MISTAKE. It is a risk if the room you are given is NOT the room you reserved, as after an hour and a half of haggling with Expedia and the staff, they still refused to refund me or change the room. I've never had such poor customer service. Other guests were there complaining that their A/C didn't work. The room I was given had ONLY A DUMPSTER for a view, and the room was not and SMELLED LIKE A DUMPSTER, while the hallways smelled like cigarette smoke. By the way, I advise against Expedia because the way this scam went down, BOTH Expedia AND the hotel had to be in on it.

Tried to contact hotel by phone three times and once by email prior to our arrival to let them know we were getting in late. No answer or response at all. Showed up to no one working and apparently one person was responsible for 4 hotels and helped us checkin to a room that was dirty, had no trash can or soap, the shower was moldy, the sheets were like toilet paper and towels like t-shirts. The morning breakfast is cereal and starts at 730am so no coffee until then as there was no coffee maker in room. Cleaning service never showed up even after requested twice! The place reeks of marijuana being smoked and the pool and hot tub are gross. Left a swimsuit behind and called the hotel twice to have them set it aside for us and never received a response! Can't believe I paid almost $2k for 4 nights here! Ripoff! Wish there was a way for me to request a refund.

The location was excellent! Walking distance to everything. But the room was okay but the walls were stained with what appeared to be soda/wine or some kind of liquid that was still and running down the wall. I should have said something, but I was only there one night and was tired. Parking was available and good, continental breakfast was less than expected, tons of people and long lines and no staff monitoring. Overall stay was okay.

The property was unique with two different hotels being under same ownership. The Ala Mar was obviously an aging beach hotel but maintained with some cute characteristics. Loved the upper patio looking out to the beach. Unfortunately we got a back corner room with one window with no view. Broken window shades. A coffee maker with no coffee. Chipped walls / paint. But cute older characteristics. Older furniture. Arched doorway. Tiled floor. Pool and jacuzzi were in working order. Coffee and light breakfast in the morning was adequate. A lot of unique pieces, art, and figurines / statues around the property which gave it a unique feel.

You get what you pay for! One of the more affordable properties nearest the beach, and within walking distance of State Street and the wharf.
The Ala Mar by the Sea property is attached to the neighbor property, so front desk for check in is done there. Also where complimentary breakfast is served.
Ala Mar does not have elevators, so be upfront if you need accessibility assistance, otherwise you are carting your luggage up a flight of stairs.
The rooms are built to suit the climate. Terracotta tile floors in the entire room, and airy open windows. We were in upstairs room 15, and unfortunately our AC unit was not functioning, so Front Desk brought us a modest room fan that helped circulate enough air with the windows open to ease the stuffy temperature. It was an unseasonably cool spring weekend, so this worked out.
The amenities are bare minimum. No phone, no alarm clock, mini fridge is empty, an electric fire place to warm the room in the winter, aforementioned air conditioner unit, ice bucket, cups, TV, a modest single set of travel shampoo/conditioner/lotion, with two bars of soap, and a bottle of hand soap.
There is a charming stained glass window into the bathroom that looks into the shower. If you need modesty, we covered it with a small paper bag leaned up against the transparent part of the glass from the inside, on the deep window shelf.
The beds are comfortable, and you can hear the ocean from the room.

We checked in at 3PM. We were given our keys but when we entered, the room was unclean. The towels were dirty & on the floor, the bed was slept in. There were half eaten yogurt and coffee cups laying about. We waited in the lobby over an hour past check in waiting for someone to be available to clean the room. We eventually had to leave so we wouldn't miss our dinner reservations. It was cleaned by the time we returned. People are overall nice just clearly understaffed. No other concerns beyond that. If you are just looking for somewhere to crash for the night that isnt priced at $800/night then I recommend it.

This property is shabby and poorly maintained, pretending to be “eclectic”.
When I protested the poor quality in my room and requested to check out one day early from my reservation, the front desk person told me I could do so, and so I made a reservation at another hotel for the following night. Then the next morning when I went to check out, that very same person claimed otherwise and charged me. I’m still fighting it.

If you book a room at the Ala Mar Motel, the check in is at the Villa Rosa Inn which is like a 1-2 minute walk. Location has a very limited parking spaces but they do have additional parking in front of Villa Rosa Inn. There is no pool at this location but they do have a large balcony with couple of chairs and tables. If you are interested in the pool, the pool is located on Villa Rosa Inn. Ala Mar Motel is located just across the beach and it’s a like 15-20 minutes walk to the downtown Santa Barbara. Other than that this still a really good place to stay.

For the price we paid we were given a room with no windows like all tye other rooms next to us and was like sleeping in the linen closet with graffiti on the bathroom wall, the tv didnt work,a teddy bear hook on the bathroom door. You have to check in to the hotel at the neighboring property, which is fine but there should have been instructions in the check in email to let you know. This property is a motel with an amazing location. The room was clean and was fine, nothing great, nothing terrible in our room 117. Worst thing- the shower didn’t work, only the tub and the water was cold. It was like taking a very cold sponge bath. Don’t think I would stay here again even with the great location.

The room is decent, it looks like they did a makeover recently but the lights flicker and the main entry door is very hard to open. From 3-5am the upstairs neighbor sounded like they were doing and Irish dance and it was impossible to sleep. The key stopped working to enter the room and when we went to the main desk in the next building the door was locked and the phone number to reach someone had a full mailbox.

It was so comfortable had such a nice vibe. Warm welcoming service. I'm enjoying the 'French country chic' ( with the Spanish twist:-) decor. I will definitely return here!

Let me start with what was great - Emily was amazing, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. She was the best!!! Also great the location - right on the beach, quick walk from the train.

The rooms are awful!! In need of a major upgrade, poorly maintained (some repairs that are needed would be simple, like replacing the showerhead, painting the walls). My group had four rooms and all were janky.

If I were to ever stay here again it would only be because of the service Emily provided (but I am not likely to stay here again)

The office is being run by staff at another hotel. It is impossible to query charges to bill after departure. There are no closets in the rooms. Not even a hook. No sound-proofing. Nice old tile throughout. Upper deck overlooking the ocean for all guests. Breakfast good but also at the other hotel up the street.

The parking lot is very tight and not adequate for the number of rooms. There is no staff on site and seemed understaffed. We had to wait long periods of time to get assistance with check-in, amenities, check-out (no staff available at that time). The floor turned our feet black within the first hour of being there. The shower would not drain so we had to space out showers and turn the water off between washing and rinsing. There was no counter space for toiletries or food prep. No storage for luggage. They had to take over the chairs as there was no floor space or closet. The a/c wouldn’t cool off the room during the day. The room was not stocked with enough towels for the number of guests (provided with 2 needed 4), no extra pillows 1 each. It was a tight space with 2 beds making it difficult to get around the room. The location is great-across from the beach and a block from State Street and near the harbor. I like that it included a fridge and microwave. The pool was at the next building (too cold for the adults) but we enjoyed the hot tub.

Way overstated the accommodations at this hotel. What is not disclosed is it has not been updated since maybe the 80s- furniture was broken, mattresses old, linens etc threadbare. The only new thing in the room was the tv. Pool? In the next door hotel. Check in? No check in on site, next door? Weird. Breakfast? Defrosted soggy bagels and pastries. Not one redeeming quality except for the location, which is why they are still in business. Oh and construction in the room next door sounded like the drill was going to come through the wall. Just awful.

I don't like to be negative -- this place could be really nice, but it needs some work. The main problem was that the toilet was not properly attached to the floor, and it leaked. Beyond that, I would have liked to have a coffee maker, a closet with hangers, and a comfortable chair or two; and my gal would have liked to have a hair dryer. But the bed was comfortable, and we slept well. Otherwise, I would have given it a rating of 1 star.

Decided to book for my wife's birthday, a little last minute but the went with the best room available. Once we entered, we noticed the AC wasn't working fans broken and the bathroom fan not working. The bed was on the wrong size frame and held together with exposed woodscrews. While there were ocean view, you could hardly see out of the window because of how dirty and failed it was.
I brought up the AC and fan fixes needed, every day while being told they would be right on it. Nothing ever got resolved. Very disappointed in my stay!

First off the office was closed and to check in you had to go next door to villa de Rosa. Second there was a charge of $25 that was supposedly not covered in the Expedia cost which I don’t understand. Third the room we were put in was #109 which took us 15 mins to find because no where does it say 109. We were lost looking for it. So we randomly used our keys to open a random door and it worked. Then the up stairs neighbors or guest were walking around non stop we couldn’t sleep. This motel was not up to par. It should not be bookable on Expedia. The only good thing is they allowed us to park before check in time. We chose to do this because of the very limited parking. I will not stay here again and I recommend you skip this location.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights while exploring Santa Barbara. Very convenient to the harbor and State Street, with its fabulous dining. Parking in the lot can be a challenge but street parking is available. Check-in was at the lobby of the hotel next door for some reason. The hostess was nice but I don’t think she ever made eye contact with me. Our room was quaint with the 2 queen beds as requested. I didn’t have a very comfy bed (I used 2 pillows which were both pretty flat) but husband was fine in his bed. Amenities were limited - shampoo/conditioner/lotion and one small round of soap in the bathroom. Refrigerator, small microwave, ice bucket with 2 plastic cups. I wish I could’ve opened the bathroom window to let steam from our showers out (no fan) but it appeared to have been permanently locked. All in all we would stay again just for the convenient location but it is pretty no frills.

The location is excellent and the second floor patio has a great view. This old hotel has some beautiful details like tile floors and nice tile work in the bathroom. However, it’s clear they are relying on the location to sell the place and not bothering much with upkeep and service.

Check-in was frustrating. We checked in on-line as requested, including giving a digital copy of a driver’s license which seemed like an invasion of privacy. When we arrived to actually check after dark (a few minutes ahead of when we had said we would), there was no sign of life at the office and a sign I could barely make out in the dark said to check in at the Villa Rosa hotel next door. This hotel had no obvious entrance but all the doors were locked. Knocking didn’t work and neither did calling the number on the door. I had to pound on a door to be let in. The desk clerk was clearly overwhelmed dealing with unhappy guests who needed things (towels, TV remotes, a new room because their first one had no glass in the window) so we had to wait to check in. Once in our room we found it clean and the windows all had glass. But the bathroom doorknob kept falling off, almost trapping me in the bathroom once. And the TV remote had no batteries so the TV couldn’t be used. By this time it was late and it seemed like too much trouble to rouse the clerk from next door to get batteries so we just went to bed.

However, waking up to a beautiful view of the sunrise over the water made up for it all.

I had higher expectations for this stay. The floors in our room were dirty and we had a broken window in the bathroom. There was a man standing out by our window in the morning trying to get back into his room. Not a hotel problem but speaks to the locals. Our room details stated there was a jetted hot tub. It’s a standard bath tub with a couple jets. I liked how close this hotel was located to the wharf and downtown state street. We made the best of our trip but I would not stay here again for the price.

Because it was off-season, I had to go next door to check in. There was no one to call at midnight when the neighbor was having an argument - someone locked out and angry. Otherwise, the room was lovely.

I should probably be ok at staying at this property if it wasn't for the feeling of have being tricked on getting into their restaurant with some discount tickets given at check-in. The restaurant is a rip-off with over priced drinks and food.

The office to check in to Alamar is not discoverable - and in fact as a different hotel next door. There was no signs mentioning this, so we had to ask the construction crew.
Also, the construction crew took up several of the few available parking sopts, and got to work pretty early in the morning. Not a great way to wake up.
All in all, this is a lovely place, but unfortunately being there during construction made our experience not stellar.
Also, like there was a pirate living somewhere on the property. He spent a good deal of time hollering and smoking weed through an apple which he left for all to use on the terrace.
So strange to have such a high potential property and such an ... \"interesting\" experience.

No front desk no phones in the room 12 o’clock. Neighbors have a party till four in the morning. Dry throughout the hotel mold in our bathroom on the ceiling big patches of mold we should’ve bolted from this place, but I already paid through Hotels.com. The balcony looks like it’s ready to fall down. I’m going to call the city and complain. feces residue in the toilet when we arrived

Do not stay here. Dangerous and hazards everywhere in the room- things broken, things missing, we had a leak in our room (which we told person at front desk and they didn’t do anything). No one was ever at the front desk to help. The location of the hotel was great, but that was the only thing pleasant about this hotel. I wish I would’ve read the other reviews before staying here.

I am a very well seasoned traveler and this is probably no this is the worst place. I’ve ever stayed. It was dirty. The beds were so uncomfortable and squeaky and slumped in the middle. There was no closets to hang anything just too big dresser drawers. The lighting Was pretty much nonexistent. There was a light fixture, but it didn’t have two bulbs in it and there was no light switch to turn it on anyway. The other light flickered. When we arrived, there were no toiletry items I had to request them after I had complained on my arrival comments. The place was very dirty. In fact we found somebody else’s socks and room key in the room still. It seems great. You’re right next to the beach but extremely noisy, and I would rather walk to the beach farther than this place again. Also extremely overpriced.

Very old, all equipment wasn’t work. In the morning at 8 :30am on 4/14/24 nobody was at concierge desk. We were unable to make check out. Just left a keys. Food for Continental breakfast on Saturday 4/13/24 finished at 8:30 am. I will never use this hotel again and definitely will not recommend it.
