We were chased out of the room!

While the front of house staff were kind and helpful, the room was a big disappointment.

We were given a room lacking adequate facilities; no kettle, fridge or cups/glasses. The room had stains on the wall near the headboard and behind the nightstand, stained carpets, bedding which had hairs, and a very small and tight bathroom with poor drainage.

There were only two plug sockets, one of which was hidden: one by the door which we found useless as anything we plugged in became a tripping hazard when entering the room & the other used for the none functioning TV.

There was no view and looked out onto another roof and wall. As there was no fridge, we resorted to storing our food outside on the windowsill to keep it from perishing.

On the morning of our check out, we were corralled out unceremoniously by the cleaning staff who entered with little warning. Although our booking indicated the checkout time as 11am, they insisted it was incorrect and wouldn't grant us any longer than 10 minutes to leave the room.

I do not recommend staying here! The property is surrounded by inappropriate stores, not safe for children’s eyes. The room was absolutely disgusting! There was hair all over the bed, towels and shower! It looked as if someone was sleeping in the bed and did not change the sheets. The carpet was so gross and stained. The walls are so dirty and have black marks all over it. Also there was no shower curtain!! The breakfast was ok. Overall, I would not stay here again and I would recommend you shouldn’t either.

Interesting historical building with many artifacts displayed on the walls. The area is quiet, away from the busy streets.

The staff was very sweet and welcoming. Very positive attitude despite the people checking in, in front of us being very difficult. No letting it out on others just very patient and friendly and professional. Wish I could have gotten her name to give the best word on her. Carpet is a little worn as well as some smudges on the walls here and there but you could tell it was from natural wear and tear. Otherwise everything was impeccably clean and the breakfast was very neat and filling. Would gladly stay here again. It was super convenient and walking distance from public transportation and cathedral was a 15 minute walk and you could stroll through the shopping strip or the old square on the way.

We strongly suspect guilty of double booking

We did not actually manage to stay at this hotel. We emailed the day before to warn them our flight would not arrive until late evening and ask about local parking, plus advice on where we might be able to eat late at night but did not receive a response. On arrival, we were told that a guest had caused damage to our room, so it was no longer available. When we tried to find out just what the problem was, the receptionist was very vague, so we very much got the impression, given that it was a very busy weekend, that the hotel had allocated our room to other guests. He acknowledged that my email had been received. He said the hotel had tried to contact us to tell us our room wasn't available but I found no record of a missed call/text/email. The hotel had rebooked us into their 'sister' hotel, a Holiday Inn, but that was in a suburb a long way from the city centre. We had specifically chosen the Ahl Meerkatzen because it was in the old city, so we would be able to meet local friends nearby and find somewhere to eat & drink until late at night. By the time we got to the Holiday Inn, everywhere in that area was closed, which ruined the beginning of our weekend stay, as we had also arranged to meet friends at the hotel for breakfast the following morning. When we complained to the hotel, they were unsympathetic, taking the attitude that they had found us alternative accommodation and did not offer us either adequate compensation or a complimentary night's stay for a future trip.

Property photos look much nicer than actual hotel. Hotel felt more like a nice hostel. Located next to exotic shops and cinema. Nice weather during my stay so not having air conditioning was not too big of an issue. Restroom plumbing had a poor smell. Accommodations worked but I think it is overpriced for what you get.

You get what you pay for our room was clean very basic. Beds where comfy maid came in every day. Breakfast ok nothing special. The guy serving breakfast is the rudest most miserable man ive come accross think he needs to retire. Basil Faulty we called him. If you have not got a sense of humour or easily offended perhaps the area the Hotel in is not for you. There some dodgy looking people about if you return to your hotel after midnight but to be honest no hassle we just laughed. Hotel reception staff very helpful

This is a heritage hotel, offering good value, a convenient location with a helpful staff.

When I had an issue with a third party booking company, they assisted me in resolving it.

For those with reasonable expectations, it is an excellent choice. After reading the reviews, those that were disappointed were not very grounded in reality and expected the experience of a brand new hotel, which is unreasonable.

For example, many people were complaining about the lack of an elevator ignoring the fact, it is an older building that cannot easily retrofit an elevator into. The location is central and some of the businesses nearby may not appeal to some, but this is not in the hotel’s control and they provide a safe and clean environment. I would stay here again.

My only complaint was that the room sound proofing wasn't as good and I could hear the conversations of the people on the street at 03:20 while trying to get to sleep.

People at reception are like robots. there is no parking place. we asked for water boiler but there was no boiler at entire hotel where we could ake a cup of tea in our room. only good thing was the quite central location. If you can spend a bit more money you better look for a different hotel.

It's a very loud hotel, lots of doors banging throughout the day and night. The hotel is based next to a sex shop and a sec cinemas. Breakfast is basic but does the job. Staff were friendly. Checking in in the evening the young man was overly helpful.
The room did NOT look like the pictures, the carpet very dirty as was the one chair in our room. The bedding an towels nice, but we both rolled to the middle, old bed.

Only downside was that when we arrived, no one was at reception. We tried messaging the reception's number but the reception does not have WhatsApp so we could only contact them through the Expedia messaging system. Receptionist arrived 5-minutes later.

Only downside is that the hotel advertises for free drinks if you don't let your room het cleaned, but there where no free drinks and the staff doesn't know anything about it although it's on a flyer in the room. So don't expect any drinks, just let your room get cleaned.

No parking garage attached to this hotel. At check-in I was given a piece of paper with a garage location 3 blocks away. This garage is for residents and guests of 3 other hotels. Definately not the place to stay if driving a car. Breakfast was sufficient.

Could do with some tea/coffee facilities in the foyer and fresh fruit at breakfast. Area is on the edge of the red light district but still quiet (at least in winter). Easy walk from the main railway station (straight through a couple of Christmas markets if you time your trip right). Under five minute walk to Heumarkt bus/tram stop, which is at the edge of the main shopping district, and the same distance from the Chocolate Museum. Breakfast was filing, but the only hot food was boiled eggs. The room was small, but the bathroom large and clean. Staff were excellent and this is a good value hotel, especially if you're here for the festive season.

Good basic hotel convenient for city sightseeing and for strolling along river. Room basic, clean and with comfy beds but we found noise from street below made it hard to sleep. Bathroom clean and good shower.
Breakfast included was a bonus and ample for a days touristing.
Only griie was that staff member was unable to resolve getting room safe open because he was new so had to go without.

I’m sorry to say my stay wasn’t wot I expected on arrival they was digging the kitchen floor up to we had the banging to contend with on the 7 days we was there we only had hot water for one day apparently they had had problems before we arrived if they would of informed us we would of chosen a different hotel and instead of the continental breakfast as on the website there was only prepackaged sandwiches coffee carton orange and yogurt it also states there is a bar NO BAR TO BE FOUND I contacted hotels.com which wasn’t very helpful at all said they could give us a discount voucher to spend on our next booking in the current crisis I think j hot water is essential and not to even be offered a kettle in your room is just not exceptable the only good point about this hotel is the location I will not be booking again

This is my forth time staying at Novum. Location was close to party venues, xmas market, and other attractions but the conditions of this hotel are getting worse. Room is basic, wires connected to some handle on the wall, curtains broken.
My breakfast was included in the price but guests were not allowed to consume it at the restaurant. We had to chise and pick up our food such as sandwiches (horrible taste and poor choice) some packed cakes. Tea and coffee. By the way, We had friends staying somewhere else and all had breaky at the hotel restaurant.
Staff was nice and friendly.
I will ever stay there again they better give it a big refurbishment cause like that is a big disgrace and also overpriced for what yhey offered.

Do not book this hotel. Absolutely no flexibility whatsoever shown during current pandemic regarding re-booking rooms at a later date - unless we paid full price again! Also a complete lack of communication for four weeks - only responded when hotels.com became involved. Other providers for the trip rebooked at either no or low cost - not this hotel. Those companies know that if you treat your customers fairly during the pandemic, those customers will stick with you in the future. We offered to make a small contribution to rebooking to next year - they came back requesting the full amount again. I wish the staff I dealt with well for the future -they will need with management’s aproach.

Short family trip for the Markets so spent little time in the hotel. The main issue was the very thin duvets and pillows but we managed for the 2 nights we were there. Also there was no kettle and tea and coffee which is unusual as every other hotel has supplied these. The breakfast was fine and the dining room and hotel and bedrooms clean . Easy enough to walk to the Markets and the Cathedral. Taxi back to the train station very reasonable. Would probably upgrade hotel if visited Cologne again but it was a budget one so can't expect miracles.

Hotel is part of an old building adapted to be a boutique hotel. Rooms are very small. There is no air conditioner.

One of the worst was no front door just a piece of plywood that swung to me that was a safety issue . It was so noisy it did not allow us to sleep well and kept us awake most of the night, every night. The rooms were so hot no air conditioning .We asked to move to a different room which they did but did not convey that to the cleaning staff so they left all the bedding and towels from the previous people so I had to go back down and request that they remake the whole room up again . If these hotels are going to be advertised on your site , you need to do your research. The picture makes it look great but it is not so.Wifi did not work in either room we had , was not convenient to have to go to the lobby each time we wanted to look for something .All in all it was not a pleasant stay in the hotel

We were most disappointed when arriving to the hotel at 12.30am after a long evening due to a delayed flight and eventful taxi ride to the hotel only to discover that the hotel was 'over booked.' We purposefully booked this hotel for its central location to save money on taxi fares which was then not the case when 1 lone member of our party had to go else where. The gentleman behind the reception desk was less than helpful, could not explain how this had happened and just kept chuckling as if this was a little mistake which was nothing to worry about. This then forced the single member of our group to travel further out of the city to another hotel on their own. We were assured that this would be resolved by the next day only to find yet again that one member of our group would be staying alone in a different hotel for another night. Other than covering the cost of the first taxi, the hotel made no attempt to compensate us for this situation and refused to far for further taxis despite this being a result of their miscommunication and inefficient planning. The hotel itself was extremely basic, staff were not helpful or welcoming which put a dampener on our weekend away.

If you’re looking to stay in a hotel next door to Colognes #1 gay sex cinema show you came to the right hotel.

The location is a 10 minute walk from main bars/restaurants, however lots of noise in the evening from the bar at the end of the street this continued till 4am.

The bathroom had gaps in the ceiling, only one pillow per bed and no lift to the 4th floor.

Not the worst hotel in the world however would never stay here again - Sex erotic shops on either side, would not recommend child friendly.
Many male guests “coming and going”.

The hotel is well located making it easy to access Cologne City, especially Heumarkt and the old town. A laundromat is virtually across the road. The hotel is very old but has charm and I like it. The room and bathroom are on the small side but good enough if you are only sleeping there. Breakfast has a reasonable selection but again this is a subjective matter. Some people may not appreciate the sex shop next door but it is no problem. I would stay again.

We had 2 rooms. We could not use the shower in one room due to water coming up through the floor. I think pricey for what it was, but so is Koln.

Location may not suit everyone whilst central the area would not suit families although I went with my son he’s 15 so no problem. The hotel is close to the Rhine, the Cathedral, Hard Rock Cafe and Alter Markt so that was good. It’s functional, clean rooms, bathroom did smell of sewage. Hotel staff were ok, but female receptionist did huff when we had a problem with our bathroom light. Reception area was very dark. Free coffee at reception as there is no kettle in the room. Back of hotel is quiet as front faces into street. We enjoyed our stay, it was near to everything but if we go again would probably stay at a different hotel.

Great place to stay, never had any trouble. beds are comfy would like an extra pillow. good internet if you are on the first/second floor.

ok for a weekend getaway

clean and tidy room, 5 mins walk from main square, 2 mins to the waterfront, visited in august, 36 degrees heat, no aircon, no fan. small shop and launderette adjacent to hotel. noisy rooms from the corridors of doors banging and lift. sex shop next door to hotel, and massage place about 4 doors down. free coffee at reception.

closet sized, hot, loud rooms with no ammenities

choose this hotel because it was close to city center and train station, and cheap, so expected that it wouldn't be great, hoped at least to get a decent night's sleep before traveling to the next stop in Germany. upon arriving to the hotel, i was initially happy with the sights of the small but quaint lobby. the front desk staff girl was also fine - not overly friendly, but fine. however, once entering the room, it was literally the size of a closet. my boyfriend and i had trouble squeezing by each other in order to get from the bathroom to the bed (and we're small people who live in a city, used to small spaces)! we had to leave the window open for summer ventilation and once night came, the people directly across the street from us began an all-night party, complete with loud voice and loud music. didn't stop until 5am and there was no recourse for it. the street sounds below were also loud. we may have gotten about 1-2 hours of sleep here, and we roasted... definitely would NOT recommend booking this place! yes it's cheap - and i'm used to budget hotels - but it's not worth any price at all.

Central location

Don’t let the appearance of this hotel put you off. You get what you pay for and it is in a central location. Perhaps not to bring children as there are a few erotic shops around.

Wifi was not working

The Wifi or Television was not working. They compensated with complimentary breakfast but, that doesn't make up for the fact that I could not respond to emails while staying at this hotel.
